- Today, Ian heads to TPC Sugarloaf just outside the metro-Atlanta area in Duluth, GA to take a sneak peak at the new Mizuno Hot Metal JPX 923 line.
Working with Chris Voshall, Mizuno’s Golf Product Manager. Ian and Chris go in depth testing and gets a tutorial on the three new JPX 923 irons.
The three JPX 923 Hot Metal irons were designed to cosmetically mix and match seamlessly so golfers and fitters can blend clubs to make a set. The offset and sizes vary, but all three have thin, fast faces for more ball speed and sound-enhancing features to go with sleek, modern looks.
Having three models has created options tor elite tour players, slow swinging amateurs and every player in between.

Just got got fit for the 923HL. Can’t wait to get them now always struggled with height not distance and they were perfect. Ended up with a dynamic gold 105s too. Out performed the Stealth irons by a mile for me. Now the wait for the build. Please be speedy Mizuno!!!

I was fitted for 923 HLs in May. They came in last week. I hit them better than any iron I have ever swung. Not only are they pretty to look at, they are awesome! I gained at least ten yards on every club. I also had spin again. I love these clubs! The feel is amazing and I'm hitting great shots once again! If you want to have more fun, try these! I am 100% satisfied! I'm 64, and feel like I'm forty again hitting these! Highly recommend you get fitted for them!

Luv my JPX 921 Hot Medal Pro's irons. This year I put their new driver, 3 wood, and 4 and 5 hybrid in my bag.
Impressive engineering. Vosh and the boys looks like they knocked another one out of the park.
Just got fit today and fitter placed me in the 923 HL. I struggled with a lower launch and low spin rates causing me to roll from front to back of greens more often then I’d like to admit! HL is really going to be a game changer for me - I can’t wait for my new irons to come in!

Very informative, I've been playing the Srixon ZX5/ZX7 combo since they came out. I think I'm going to book my appointment with Club Champion and give the Hot Metal Pro's a try out.
the zx5/zx7 are still very very good clubs, the zx7 mkii is coming out soon, I think I'm gonna wait for that to upgrade from my jpx 919 tours
I love my Joy Passion Excitement 921 HMP irons.
IMHO Mizuno best iron company going and actually all their clubs are amazing. I have the JPX-900 Hot Metals and these clubs are outstanding. At 60 I hit the ball as far or even a tad further in the long irons and by the way still play the 4i it's a cheater club! iI's crazy. i would love to get these new JPX-923 Hot Metals but I can't justify how well I play the 900's. Maybe Santa will have a good list with a curve!!!! Well done Mizuno.

I just recently purchased the 921 hot metals 7-GW along with the 4-6 Fli-Hi hybrids. This is my second set of Mizuno irons but my first Mizuno hybrids. As a lifelong golfer and someone who buys clubs frequently and from most all of the major manufacturers I’d like to say that not only are the irons fantastic but the Fli-Hi hybrids are fabulous! I’m writing to ask and to wonder why the Fli-HI’s aren’t mentioned here especially since they are an integral part of the fitting of the Hot Metal line? Just asking?
I already have the 921's but it'd be fun to try these. I did have a little laugh when I saw the "High Launch" model also has 3 degrees of more loft relative to the others lol.
I bought the HL irons and gained 12 yards over my Steelhead XR's. Even with the HL's being more loft I hot more ball speed. I am guessing because of the new tech. Thank you Mizuno! Oh, also the more offset in the HL's did not effect my ball flight. If anything I am more accurate now. JC
As a 10 HCP, I love the 919 Hot Metals. So forgiving and buttery smooth.

I fluctuate between a 7-9 handicap depending on how much I get to play and I have the 921 Forged that Ian mentioned from last year(fit at TXG). I love them so much, I definitely will not be upgrading for the next few years. Mizuno and buttery smooth irons go hand in hand!!
After my fit I kept thinking it's just a 6 iron with a 7 printed on the back. But considering they all launched around 19 degrees, it just makes sense to go with the club that gives more ballspeed.
Is it possible to adjust hm pro to weaker loft ? Say 1,5 degree ?
hit the 923hm pro today and, coming from a forged head, I couldn't believe how great this club felt for a non forged head.
Nice one. All intestering to hear how achieved. Would have liked the two of you to address how gaping would work and what it might mean for different players in terms of qty of wedges or leaving other clubs behind
Great review. Unfortunately the HL version is not available to lefties like myself so probably will have to look at other manufacturer options.
Since I don't get to play or practice as often as I once did, I decided to dig playing with "Players'" irons (PXG Gen 4 "P") and drop to a slightly more forgiving irons enter the new Mizuno Hotmetal JPX 923. I can attest they're everything advertised and more!!! Explosive, forgiving and consistent in other words everything needed for a fun round of golf and going low on the score. Much too often casual golfers tend to wanna impress others with the type irons they're playing (i.e. Pro, CB, MB series with the thinnest top line) verses what allows them to obtain the lowest score... but you don't get style points in Golf.
I love blended set. It seems Mizuno and PXG are really nailing the customized offerings for golfers. I went PXG but am definitely considering Mizuno as a front runner on the next upgrade.
My two favorite iron companies. The HMB was a real disappointment for me though. 0311T Gen3 did for me what I hoped the HMB would do. A not-quite-blade with just a little extra juice but still great feel. Mizuno 223/225 look great but I haven't had a chance to try them yet.
The exact video I was looking for. I am a 20 handicap. Love the Hot Metal then I was given the Pro to try. I was getting another 10 yards carry. I am a stronger 60 yod golfer. Do you think the Pro is too much for me to use a a club to be a better golfer? Or should I just get the Hot Metal. Thanks for your opinion...
Bought a full set of the 923 pro irons and these go helluva farther than my taylormade stealth set. Really impressed but I did lose around 450 rpms of spin
So the HM HL do I have this right? - I’m seeing better decent angle, way more forgiving, and distances are that of the traditional lofted clubs. Is this club really as good as it seems? The best of everything players want. Would better players that might play the 233, who want more forgiveness without sacrificing distance control and actually seeing more spin be a fit for these? Instead of going into the 923 forged or hot metal pro?
Is there a noticeable difference between the 921 HM and 923 HM? I did notice the lofts are a little more jacked up in the 923s but was wondering if the feel was the same as the 921s. Swung them last week and they felt great. Currently gaming Taylormade RSi1 and the 921s felt far superior

HL is really what a lot of golfers needed in this category. Hopefully they will put their ego aside and game an iron that really helps their game. The standard hot metal and pro look to be low launch low spin irons much like the Stealth irons or Forged Tec X. Ego must be a driving component in this category because I imagine more players will opt for these in the hitting bay over the HL but will then wonder why their 7 iron hit the green and bounded 15 yards off the back lol.
It’s curious because the player that has the right swing speed and delivery to get the most out the the standard and pro will most likely NOT game an iron like that and will go to forged or tour. Who am I to judge though lol. Glad they at least increased the bounce to help the launch and spin. That’s the reason I went with i525s. So easy to hit with much improved sound and feel.

I find it crazy that none of the worlds best play mizuno irons, they are unbelievable
They don't pay like Callaway & TaylorMade. The other reason is that most deals are full bag (or 13 clubs/all but putter) and Mizuno's drivers weren't good enough until very recently.
P.S. They should've paid Koepka.
Are they expecting to offer the forged version for left-handers? I know there's limitations on what you can get for left-handed players

so is high launch for the slower swing speeds that can not get height or some that maybe quicker that just doesn't create enough spin to get the landing angle, kind of missed who the target golfer is?
Exactly how you put it. I got fit to the HL as I struggle with height and spin but not speed. It’s also for excessive shave lean players. I’ve got the Dyanmic Gold 105s in them and they felt great. Now the build wait time.
I don't like my irons having offset, but I do like the forgiveness. Trying to decide if I should go Pro or Standard. Leaning Pro due to less offset.

I am even more confused now, last week i was ready to get fitted for 225's, now i have these to check out. I need help with longer irons and love the feel of my forged wedges through the ground. I hate the game improvement clubs I have now and i need the help but i need a club that isn't a shovel. These have no feel and horrible movement through the turf and take horrible chunky divots that kill the distance a defeat the purpose of GI irons.
Don't sleep on PXG 0311T. I did P in the 5&6 iron, T on the rest. Longtime Mizuno blade player but old & needed just a little help but not too much. Super happy.
The prices on the gen 4s are really appealing right now.

I can't seem to get along with the JPX line. Still play my old Mizuno MP33s. Even new 221 MB doesn't beat the 33s for me. Combination of turf interaction, feel, distance control and so on. This being said, if I ever replaced my MP33s, I would be buying Mizuno irons to do so. Would love to be able to work with Chris on proper fitting. His knowledge not only of his product line but golf itself is impressive. And, of course, doesn't get more impressive than Ian.

Check Mizuno website. This video only was for the Hot Metal series. Mizuno also hasn’t short video on their channel for all new irons released today.

This demo test I feel would have been better suited to Mike or another staffer with average or below average swing speed.
The HL version spinning an 8-iron nearly 9000 w/185 carry is pretty crazy. That said, imagine a more normal swing speed of its target. I could see the target demographic spinning 7000 w/155 carry, which is more than ideal. While the 35* loft is strong, it should lead to 43-44* PW, which is not crazy in this era and a 4-wedge makeup seems plausible.
The other 2 with 33* 8-irons leads to same issue I have with every ‘distance’ club I see. What’s my wedge makeup? Do I carry 5 wedges? My PW alone is 41, maybe 42? It’s true I play ‘traditional lofted irons’ but that 8-iron is only 1* weaker than my 6. At the very least, wouldn’t it be better to call that a 7?
The other issue with these superlofts is gapping and playability. Your 30yd gapping from 8-5 iron is maybe a bit tighter than I like for mid-irons but it’s acceptable. What happens w/targeted audience w/slower ss? I’m betting that gapping tightens. A 22* 5-iron? That’s my 3-iron loft. Even with all of the CG manipulation, do we really expect someone w/limited or even average ss to consistently launch a 22* iron? I’m betting they sell a lot of 6-PW sets.
4-gw is like 3-p in traditionally lofts.

I've never heard of the COR limit for irons???
COR limit, currently @83%, applies to all clubs; drivers, fw woods, hybrids, utilities, irons, etc. If it only applied to certain clubs, you know oe’s would develop a new ‘club type’ to skirt such limits.
Pretty sure the way club manufacturers are going where longer is better even in players irons that their's gonna be a need for 5 wedges starting at like a 45 degree and your 4 iron will go as far as your 3 wood so you'll only need a driver..... or actually you won't need a driver because 3 woods don't have the same cor limits drivers do so they'll just make them a little bigger but hotter and you'll only carry one wood a juiced up 3 wood and 8 wedges lol

At almost 70 I can’t imagine hitting an 8 iron 178! Don’t seem possible for senior golfers. Let’s talk real numbers of the average golfer, not pros.

Yep. Depends on how wet the ground is. More sole = More Bounce = less turf interaction.
In the long irons, by what you describe, I’d say the HM pro.

We need more forgiving irons with thinner soles that don’t have crazy lofts. I barely take any divots so anything with wider soles feels like it gets stuck to the ground. Also don’t want a set where I need to go 5 iron to 3 hybrid but have 5 wedges because of lofts.
Completely agree. The 5 wedge bag makeup hurts my brain.
I don’t know that you can get a thin sole for this type club that’s manipulating CG for easier launch. They are already employing high density metal w/tungsten inserts in sole. We need the real estate in that sole to enable that low CG.
For someone who has turf interaction issues but wants the advantage of lowered CG for better launch, I’d suggest demoing different sole grinds. The Srixon v-sole usually helps. I play Muira 501’s, which have very thin sole but switched out the 3-iron for a Srixon U85 driving iron last year. Took a bit to get accustom to the greater offset and was mostly intended as a safe tee club on holes into wind. After adapting to it, I’ve found I use it far more than expected on fairways, especially as approach on par 5’s. The turf interaction is simply brilliant and it has launch profile to land relatively soft for a 22* lofted iron.
Vosh has already mentioned this in other videos - forgiving clubs can't have thinner soles and thin top lines because it need vertical balance to compliment the longer heel to toe design of the club - if they could of done it would of been done 20 years ago and every oem would only make forgiving blades :)
I thought the V sole was better suited for steeper swings?
For me it comes down to how you define forgiveness. A wider sole helps with chunked hits and maybe to get the ball up in the air but that’s not where I need help with. I compared some designs of 10-15 irons and landed on there TM P770 as these seemed to have the best compromise between thinner sole and forgiving club design.
Maybe TXG can dedicate a video to test irons for people with shallower swings ;)
@Dominik Altheimer I'm loving my Titleist T100s irons. They are a touch stronger lofts but not too much and the soles are just right in thickness and fairly forgiving. I've added a T200 2 iron up the top and play 50/56 & 62 degree wedges. 3 wood and driver round off my set up and I have a Ping G425 17 degree hybrid for courses when my 2 iron gets left out.

My Callaway Rogue X 6-iron is 24 degrees. I love it, hit it far and high.
So in reality it's equivalent to an old 4 iron

Correct but when you get to the wedges and you are playing a 41° pitching wedge the gapping is too great for specialty wedges

Give me JPX HM and HM pro in higher lofts and I can blend them into one set but 28,5 7i really? Went too far. Look at Ping they give you power loft if you want to want to fool yourself in distance but also retro spec if you are more down to earth but want to max forgiveness
I've never liked products with pro or tour labels stamped on them. It's so cliché now. I don't think Ping or Titleist do though and I think their equipment speaks for itself.
If it works for me I don't care what they call it. Not sure why it matters.

Sure it is. It's still strong lofted, just a couple degrees weaker than the other 2 models. Purpose is to increase launch and spin with more back-weighting.
IMO loft is the key to distance. Whatever the number on the bottom of the club if it has, for example, 33 degrees of loft it will carry a very similar distance to any other club with 33 degrees of loft (unless the shaft length is significantly different as that impacts on club head speed).
In my experience every golfer has a limit to how low a lofted club that player can consistently launch - it depends on swing speed and attack angle. For me any iron below 25 degrees of loft is a challenge, but that can be improved if the CG is low enough. Not changing clubs but it would interesting to try the long irons in the new HM range.
Mizuno is ahead of the curve here. Distance irons have become way out of control with low lofts that can't achieve proper flights.
Distance irons that spin well is such a good design.
How is nobody done this!? Ping 425 retro spec did that and did better as the offset is not such monstrosity and wider range of people can play those
