  • Mizuno JPX923 HM HL vs Taylormade Stealth HD comparing 2 of the main antagonists in the High Launch for Slower Swingers market. These irons/hybrid heads are designed to launch the golf ball as high as possible for additional carry distances even at slower club head speeds. The Taylormade Stealth 2 HD has the more hybrid iron design, whilst the Mizuno JPX923 HM HL is a more traditionally designed Super Game Improvement Iron. Which one will suit you?

    I've just bought a full set of Stealth HD 2. Love them. I have never hit my irons so well or woods for that matter.

    Surprisingly it's not just for older players. I swing just under 80mph 7i but still found the HL was getting a much better ball flight as I tend to close the face down quite a bit when I'm swinnging well.

    I ordered these for my wife who loves her 3 hybrids shallow swing (due to past left elbow injury) so not the best swing for her TM Sim OS. These should help bring irons closer to hybrid swings especially when she’s tentative with a steep swing.

    Thorough,analytical and unbiased as always - and very useful for the slower swings. 👍
    This is direct input to narrowing down what to get my better half fit into. During the summer our turf firms up to be quite hard (and grass worn away or thin/flat), so I am thinking that the turf intreaction (all other things being equal) would be better with the Mizunos unless the swing is a completely swiping wood-like strike?

      @AskGolfNut  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Niels, yes you'd be right in that assumption, the HL bounce figures aren't on the Mizuno website and I do know that they have been increased slightly over the 921, but still even if it matches the HDs 11 deg (which I don't think it does, maybe 8 at a push) the larger sole width would give a larger effective bounce either way. So yep depending on the swing, ground interaction and ground conditions the one with the smaller or larger effective bounce would work better 👍

    It's confusing but my understanding is the HL with a 30 degree 7 iron will launch higher for a slower swinger like a senior while the other models with lower or kicked up lofts like 26.5 or 27 degree 7 irons will be hard for a senior with a slower swing speed to launch. I recently tried the Ping G430 in a senior shaft and I hated it while my old Callaway X-22 launched higher and farther. Please correct me if I am wrong.

    I am a 75 year old slow swinging 14 handicapper and I found this video really interesting. Thanks for this comparison. I think the PING G430 irons offer a high launch version and it would be interesting to compare those to the HM HL.

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Ping offering isn't a different head with different lofts etc, it's just the standard G430 iron head but with lighter top and toe weights in the head to produce a lighter swingweight. You can retro spec the lofts of the G430, but this would also compromise bounce a touch, and Pings already have quite a high bounce angle already. Great golf club but I fear people would moan that it isn't an apples for apples comparison 🤷👍

      Put the jpx hl's in my bag late last year and can't be happier. Matched them up with the kirkland ball to give me maximum stopping power. Slow swinger hitting longer clubs into greens. Give them a try you won't be disappointed especially if your a senior slow speed golfer.

      @@jbh199Nice. Switching to Golf Pride CP2 Jumbo grips also helped my swing speed and I don't have jumbo hands. I recommend midsize or jumbo for all guys because the extra grip is like having wider tires on a sports car.

  • @NCtrailX
    @NCtrailX ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for the detailed comparison! Do you think the wider sole of the HD would win out based on irregular turf interaction and a range of lies? Have trouble with consistency from bad lies. Thanks

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think mainly most people struggle from poor lies just through improper technique and that they rarely practice the skill. So really it wouldn't make too much difference with either of these two soles unless the technique is fairly sound to start 👍
      Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍

    I would love to have your slow swing speed. I'm 35 years old with an 18hc and my swing speed was around 77mph on the 7 iron when I was last on a trackman.
    It would be nice to know what I need to do to start increasing swing speed without it feeling out of control.

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ben, as, always there is, a certain amount of technique and a certain amount of physicality involved. Also there will always be stages of control issues even if it only comes from sequencing when dialling up speed. You have to persevere with it under the knowledge that it unlocks big potential scoring gains 👍

    I have the mp-20 hmb set. My swing has slowed down I reallly like the looks and testing I have seen on the jpx high launch. Any similarities? Looking for more forgiveness and less dispersion short to long. Sometimes the hmb can really jump

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jeff, the HMB set are a much more players distance set, the design of the HL etc is much different with launch and maximum carry distances in mind based on slower swing speeds. As soon as your swing speed is sub 80 with a 7 iron it's something I definitely would think about testing 👍

      Coming from the metals industry I look for changes in metallurgy as relates to cost. TM seems to me to be most interested in cost reduction, and equivalent performance where possible.

    I’m probably in the age demographic for the Stealth HD (age 65) but not necessarily in the player demographic (5 handicap, driver swing speed of 96). I just want predictable distance and dispersion given expected mishits. Watching all of the TH-cam videos, (this channel obviously the best), I decided to try both out. I tried both the 923 and HD. I absolutely did not like the bottom profile of the 923 (not good for side hill lies). I was very comfortable with the look of the HD. I hit both and found the HD with the stiff flex shaft the best. I play five times a week so I will soon find out if I made a good choice. I’m currently playing a player’s distance iron and I’m looking for more forgiveness, not distance.

    • @maa34711
      @maa34711 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I finished my fifth round today with my new Stealth HD irons and shot even par for the first time this year. I’ve also hit around 250 range balls during this same time. It took me a little effort to get used to the HD’s. I would call them left biased vs draw biased and the harder I swing the more they want to exhibit this. I’ve learned to aim at or just right of my target, swing smoothly and trust that the ball will not fly right. I can fade them if I need to. Today I did have to hit a low draw around a tree with the six iron and it was pretty easy to do. From a forgiveness perspective, they perform exactly as advertised. They are very forgiving especially where I wanted (low and/or toe hits). My player distance irons are not forgiving low and/or toe, which is the reason I decided to try the HD’s. Fortunately, the ball flight and distances matched up very closely with my previous irons. I do like the sole shape; curve heal to toe and front to back. This works great for side hill lies, shots out of the rough and playing the ball back in my stance. They are also easy to hit out of a fairway bunker. The feel and sound are very acceptable. I played a round with a friend who has the Halo irons and tried them out on the driving range. The feel and sound of those were not to my liking. The Halo’s are a very different club vs the HD’s. With all of the performance guarantees offered by various seller’s, these HD’s were worth a try and I plan to keep them in my bag, at least that’s what I tell my wife.

      Glad you have found the right clubs for you, the HD irons/hybrids are a great choice 👍🏻

    • @maa34711
      @maa34711 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      My last three rounds with the Stealth HD’s; 72, 72, 72. So far for me they take one mystery out of the golf equation; distance. As long as I make adequate contact, the distance the ball flies is close to the same. When you only have to consider the danger of hitting offline left or right, the game gets easier. These irons/HYBRIDS are forgiving in terms of distance. My previous six scores before the HD’s were 76, 77, 75, 76, 73. No, they don’t save you ten stokes but they work.

      Thanks very much for the real world example of how good these design on heads are..... I've literally just released a video that shows how consistent and easy to hit this design of head shape is for all golfers and you are definitely in the bracket of the good golfer. I think also that the majority of beginner golfers looking to enjoy the came first can benefit greatly from head, designs like this 👍🏻

    It seems to me that the Mizuno JPX923 HM HL would be a good choice for a mid/high handicapper with fast swing speed but not the best ball striking. I struggle with hitting the center of the face every time so I would benefit from game improvement irons, however my swing my 7i at 90-93 MPH do I don't need the distance/stronger lofts that come with most GIs. The HM HL seems to be perfect at giving the forgiveness of a GI iron but traditional lofts. Thoughts?

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Absolutely correct on both points. If you swing medium to fast speeds but need the forgiveness, the more traditional lofts of the HL make it a good choice for sensible distance gapping. 👍

      I bought these 5 months ago and I have a similar fast swing speed on my 7 iron in a stiff shaft. I tested so many clubs and did so much research and got the Mizuno HL with the Dynamic Gold 105 shafts. These clubs have lowered my scores so much because when I hit the green now the ball stops on a dime. Love the forgiveness of the off center shots as well as the turf interaction of these clubs. You wont regret it for sure. Make sure to get high weighted steel shafts of 100 g or more because any lighter would make the ball trajectory too high.
