- Keypads have some amazing benefits for gaming and professional users who want a more compact setup. But some people think these single handed devices are pointless. We set out to find which one it is and how these keypads have evolved over time. Well the Razer Tartarus v2 with its mecha-membrane switches and Chroma lighting seems to be a perfect solution for FPS games at least but there's some important limitations too.

I love my tartarus. Finally lets me, as a physically disabled person, to play games with far less trouble
That's great to hear!
Yas
Much love congrats
I'm very sorry to hear the you are disabled
Great to hear you gaming! Just a question though, how does your disability limit your gaming capacity?
I can't play with a keyboard anymore, moving using your thumb in an MMO is pretty much the best thing ever.
Yep I only use my keyboard for chat.
@@Timscool9GT yes but the point of devices like these is comfort. You can game for long periods on a G13 etc... without wear and tear on your wrist. Especially when you play an MMO and need to combo it's much smoother.

Idk about gaming but for editing this thing is top-tier. Using macros to activate commands quickly and without error is just marvelous.
@@bosco_bosco yes of course
You can use these things for so much more than just gaming! 3d modeling, graphics design, etc...
I didn't think about useing it for cad and sutch but it would be great to that
You can,t even write word document with this
@@stefanstefan2105 the idea is each key is a hot key for a different function in CAD. Ie. extrude, draw a circle, assembly.
@@stefanstefan2105 dumb is dumb...
thinking aobut picking one up to sit beside my tablet on zbrush, the keyboard is too wide and sits in fron. not bad, but if I can inprove the position maybe its worth it. Is it worthwhile?
I love mine. I had an Orbweaver v1, Orbweaver v2/chroma, and now this.
The hardest part of these is fighting keyboard muscle memory. When I first tried it, I gave up after a few hours because it just felt awkward. I boxed it back up ready to return the next day. But since the local bestbuy/microcenter return window is 30 days, I figured that returning it the next day vs returning it on day #30 would be no different, so I gave it more time.
I'm so glad I did. These keypads work best when you forget the notions of a keyboard and use it as a blank canvas - that means forgetting keyboard muscle memory (very hard to do). To me, the "ah-a" moment was using the DPAD as movement.
Honestly, relegating the thumb - the most useful digit on our hand - to just 2-3 buttons that are infrequently used makes no sense. Controlling critical functions of reload, use, sprint, etc on the same fingers that are used to move around? A lot of people shift some of these functions to mouse buttons, but now you're adding more for your AIMING HAND to do. Yet on a controller, movement is handled by ONE thumb, the most dexterous part of the human body.
I use "08" as sprint (the W of WASD). Why relegate the frequently used sprint/walk key to the weakest pinky? Now it's a more comfortable forward finger. Now 07,09,12,14 are a grid of weapon selection readily available by the pointer and ring finger while I still have pinky and pointer for reload, crouch, use/interact, etc. Prone is 13, right below sprint, so I just roll my finger down as if I was diving prone when I need that function.
I play division 2 and tons of other keybind-heavy games and have no problem with key binds since abandoning the "WASD" mindset. Button above the d-pad is map, the space bar below is inventory - makes sense because you're never moving AND opening map/inventory. When you forget the notion of using it as a WASD keyboard, there's tons more flexibility. There's a learning curve trying to ween yourself off the muscle memory for sure, but using a keyboard for gaming feels SOOOOOO inefficient to me now.
The other ones that are simply keypad cutouts make less sense to me. You're just replicating a keyboard in a less familiar shape - so why not just stick with the keyboard? The Tartarus/Orbweaver are more effective because the ergonomics allow for more options for experimentation.
Everyone should buy one locally, and give it the full ~30 day return window to try. Don't just try it for a few hours - you won't beat YEARS of keyboard muscle memory that quickly.
Hey bro, which keypad do you recommend most for using DPAD as movement? Especially as regards flexibility
My man here writing the whole Bible
I like your thinking, might be time to ditch WASD.
my dude im glad I read your comment, I took a print screen of this so I dont forget the tips for the hotkeys lmao props to you my dude
That makes sense. I will try those commands. What is your jump button?
90% of your issues in here are solved by keymap switching buttons, makes playing super complex games infinitely easier than the keyboard ever could be
And the tartarus will store 3 different ones and 3 different LED profiles. Press and hold to change profile, press to change LED.
Agreed. In WoW and Warframe I use W & S to move up and down, A & D strafe left and right... all the other buttons are the typical 1 thru = with Shift, ALT and CTRL modifiying those 12 keys and the hat for F1-F4. Use mouse buttons with modifiers for targeting and you're good to go.
100%
yea even skimming through this videos most the issues seemed more User Error than fault of the design itself
I love the keymap switching feature.. I have kemaps for controlling media, picture editing shortcuts, directional inputs, etc.. it's wonderful for games and work alike
I've been using one of these for almost a year now, highly, highly reccomend.
Might bite the bullet and grab one. My left hand strains a lot from using my keyboard, also have no wrist rest :/
@@syd_jzx100 buy a wrist rest.....
@@CheesyTornado i'll just buy both lol
@@syd_jzx100 thats a little redundant
@@CheesyTornado the button layout of this seems much more comfortable tho. Just not sure about all the buttons being the exact same size.
I have always used one. I have the WASD keys mapped to the thumb switch. All my movement is done with the thumb, allowing my fingers to run commands. It also allows me to always have a certain command in the same place, no matter the game. You can layer the keypad to fit as many commands as you want. Orbweaver has mechanical switches, it's awesome.
What do you use for jump if your thumb is tied up with the directional arrows?
The button right under the joycon/dpad
Bro that what I needed to know thank you so much
So you have to take your thumb off the movements to hit your jump?
@@championincharge you also have 19 other buttons you can map Jump to so pet much whatever you’re comfortable with
If you use the thumb stick for movement, that frees 4 keys on the pad for grenade etc, with the advantage that movement with a stick is much more intuitive. Also ALL movements are covered. You don't gotta move a finger to a different key to move back. Once you program the rest of the keys and get some muscle memory, you will be a much better player than with just a normal keyboard.
If you are using the stick, what is your jump button?
@@JayZoop Whichever of the finger buttons you like. Just bear with it though as muscle memory takes time.
What do you use for sprint?
@@JayZoop I have used mouse 3 (thumb) for jump/climb for at least 10 years.
As an Ornata user, I’m disappointed in mecha-membrane on this for 100$
This is the reason I bought an orbweaver chroma, for actual mechanical keys. It just sucks that I have to now use Synapse 2 and 3 (3 for my Naga Trinity)
For $89 I just bought a mechanical keyboard
i agree, the ornata is nearly the same price with more keys
same here, the ornata for me feels better for typing, because it never really bottoms out, and i like that when typing.
Memelord_47 I said the opposite though
I cannot game without one of these. I own a Tartarus, Tartarus V2, and Two Orbweavers. When I transferred from consoles to PC gaming I never was able to adapt to using the keyboard. I use the thumbstick for movement, feels like using analog stick on a controller... Kinda but it's better. Funny thing is I also use a Naga.
I would hate it if they made these anymore like a keyboard. In my opinion doing so would defeat the purpose. I see it as a keyboard alternative not a compact keyboard.
Same here. Brilliant product. Need some time to get used to it but after that its amazing

They’re great for MMOs when used in conjunction with a naga mouse.
red_array you just have to make one of the keys a shift/alt and you enable the same amount of binds. If you look at how Swifty plays, since he doesn’t have a pinky, he uses the joystick for key binds rather than movement. Lots of options, especially with the one that has an integrated scroll wheel.
The Truth I think they’re overkill for fps games. I think WASD is better for shooters than a game pad. But for game like wow, where I play a shaman or a rogue, with 20+binds - I cant play any other way
I've been playing the Nostromo/ Naga combo for at nearly a decade. Considering an upgrade to the Tartarus to refresh and retire the trusty Nostromo. Can't play anything on a PC without either.
Red I guess it’s preference because I prefer keyboard as well and I can press like almost all the number, and letter keys without problem with minimal effort, while never letting w go,otherwise I can abuse all the 100 of em.I have too many options especially with Wow Nowadays.
@@robertper4102 if you have the disposable income, try to pick up an Orbweaver instead of the Tartarus. The Orbweaver uses true mechanical switches and has all 20 keys instead of 19+scroll on the Tartarus. The Orbweaver is far more adjustable to fit larger hands. The only issue is the anemic feeling buttons above and below the joystick. The lower thumb button also has quote a bit of play, however you can shim it to make it completely solid.
I've used a G13 for years and have been waiting for a company to create one with mechanical keys but with an analogue thumb stick instead of Razers D-Pad
I love my g13 but at this point it is honestly just ancient hardware. I'd jump at the first keyboard that takes this concept seriously... but this is just disappointing... a membrane keyboard with sloght ergonomics and fucking rgb? way to miss the needs of the audience.
Razer orbweaver
You should do a video comparing a few different models like the Razer orbweaver that has mechanical switched.
I tried one of these Razer ones and I can say it's so discomfortable compaired to the g13. The g13 is the perfect design, just with Logitech would wake up and realize how great the g13 was
Looks like we are a legion... we sounds like millions ready to pump into Logitech.
Too bad they look like more interested in selling iPad shit.
The human thumb is one of our most versatile tools, and the normal keyboard wastes with one big ass key.
True. I now use the thumb for 6 additional keys thanks to tartarus. However, the space were too unnatural for me, so I use "left" thumbpad for space instead :p
@@Dianophi What's the "left thumbpad"?
You should use the index finger on key 15 or 19. Probably 19, and use 15 for crouching.
The key 20 is NOT a space bar, it's just for buttons that you don't need to use when moving, at worse just replace the ESC key for pausing the game.
@@IIARROWS oh, sorry I ment right thumbpad. Also, no. For me that's uncomfortable and I like it just as is atm. In BR games I use 20 as map anyway.
Damn, actually it was right what I said at the first time. What I ment was I used "left" ON the thumbpad/directional keys as crouch.
my friend uses his thumb to press control on a normal keyboard
Lovin these shots D! I used a Razer gamepad when I first started PC gaming in 2013 (late bloomer, I know) but it greatly helped my transition from console gaming
Hi randomfrankp!
OMG!!! Randomfrankp I am a HUGE fan of you I love your vids and also I watched the mechanical wall switches
Nice, do you still use any or going full keyboard lately?
-D.
Been using a full keyboard for the past few years once I got used to it after the gamepad
randomfrankp so have I. The WASD layout & mouse. But im wondering if this would be better for FPS games.
I've been using the Razer Orbweaver for about 6 months now, and its amazing. I play MMOs, shooters, RPGS and survival games mostly. I also use a Razer Naga Epic mouse. Between the two devices I have no need for ever hitting the keyboard except for typing to chat. I also use these devices with Pro Tools for audio engineering. It has greatly increased my workflow while editing. I can never go back to just using a keyboard for either.
If you are a gamer, or heavy user for editing video or sound these kinds of devices are awesome additions to your work/battle station.
This is a very good tool for productivity.
I use this in conjunction with a Cintiq screen in Photoshop, Illustrator and others.
I've never used it for gaming. I have regular gamepads for gaming.
If you ever get lonely, if all your friends are supposedly offline or you have no one to talk to, start using one of these without your keyboard plugged in. Suddenly EVERYONE will start sending you DMs. Long lost friends will suddenly appear in your DMs. This happens literally every time I try to use this without my keyboard. xP
I use a 22" Cintiq for making artwork, and the Tartarus works great for me. Instead of reaching over to my keyboard, I have the Tartarus right beside the Cintiq and the over all set up is much more comfortable. And what sets the Tartarus apart from other keypads is that is has a scroll wheel - which allows me to change the size of brushes while painting in Photoshop.
This so much :)
I agree 100% , It's definitely helpful for a Laptop gamer like me and also saves space .
👍
What if I dont makro often? You still like it if you use it as a standard but smaler keyboard? Thinking for games like Overwatch and Company of Heroes 2 :)
@@roundlake96 No way , it cannot compete with standard mech. or TKL keyboards . I have a HyperX allox elite too which I'd prefer any day for Overwatch or CS Go , this as I said is great to travel with my laptop . But at home , keyboard is the way to go .
A keyboard puts your laptop's display far away from you while using a keypad let you have a better body posture while gaming on your lap
@@Paw_Low Yea true that , a good solution would be using a monitor and using the laptop just as a CPU
I've been playing WoW with a keypad with joystick movement for my character for years and I simply can't go back to W-A-S-D controls ever again.
I dont get the added benefit. You still gonna use your keyboard for keybinds (I have like 25, thats pretty normal number), so your fingers rest around WASD anyway`? So many wow comments on this video through ;o
Or is just because you suffer from bad wrist pain? Anywho moving with the mouse and WASD feels natural.
Agreed
@@Djuntas I went from console gaming to PC gaming so moving with an analogue stick felt more natural and it also left al the rest of the fingers on my left hand free to spam hotkeys while moving.
@@Djuntas If you are using 25 keybindings, then your hand is going to be flying around the keyboard. On the Nostromo line of keypads, the d pad is perfectly situated so that you can do movement with the thumb leaving your fingers free to do what ever you key bind them keys to. You can also set several key maps to a game profile, so you can switch between main combat, inventory management. Combine it with a gaming mouse that has several different buttons, and it becomes a whole new experience. The major problem with the synapse software though is you can't print out or name what your key mapping is. So if you don't play a game for a while, it's very easy to get flustered as you can't remember what key does what. But if you use it to play one particular game, then muscle memory soon develops and your fingers will be dancing over the key pad and your wrist will thank you for it.
@@stewartleslie3292 Cool thanks. I kinda get it better now. Its like a 2nd mouse. Could be fun to try, but I think im to much of a keyboard person. My k70 vengeance with red switches is a masterpiece.
This is actually good for disabled gamers!
I'm disabled lmao
For the ppl who have one arm
But you would need to click...
I think it is op i use it my self

I am personally a big fan of these keypads, they are very ergonomic and they allow me to take what would otherwise be 4 buttons (WASD) and move those to 1 joystick/D-pad that only takes my thumb to use. They have helped me a lot in terms of not having to play keyboard twister when I want to do something like running forward, jumping to the right, then throwing a grenade (Something I find very difficult to do with a Keyboard).
My big problem with the Razer Tartarus V2 in particular though is for some reason Razer decided it was a good idea to replace the bottom right key with a scroll wheel (That key is my jump button and I am not going to try relearning a new place to put that).
I found mapping buttons to ones on the keypad that feel intuitive can be a hasstle sometimes but I also found it fairly easy to get used to (It helps when you have a mouse with a few extra buttons, doesn't have to be much). I ended up mapping Grenade to a side mouse button and/or number 15 on the keypad, both feel good and having the option to use either can be useful.
I have found my keypad most useful in FPS games and I would recommend at least trying a keypad out for those games.
I use the Logitech G13, and it is still Amazing! They need to bring it back.
Sits next to my G510 lol
Me too, production software and gaming alike.
I wish they would w/ updated switches
I use this as well. Got it for $5 at an estate sale. Best deal I've ever gotten.
I'd love an updated mech switched one with addressable RGB and an OLED screen.
If you want the mechanical version, which is slightly outdated, its called "the orbweaver".
Own it, IMO it's fantastic. Also prefer the extra key opposed to the "scroll wheel"
@@Nemesis_Stormheart lack of scroll wheel was the kicker for me on buying an Orbweaver.
But I wanted to use one for more than just gaming (like with a graphics tablet)
Never saw the tweet, yes,.still rocking my G13, can't live without that thumb joystick. I use it for 1-4, very good for switching weapons
Wait, do you use the joystick to change weapon? o_O
Far from pointless, as an ex console player I really struggle with wasd. I have years of muscle memory moving characters with my left thumb on a stick. It's essential to the point I'm surprised there aren't more options out there with thumbsticks.
I don't understand why you claim there aren't enough buttons on these keypads. I play Warcraft and use the Razer Tartarus Chroma (1st edition). I set up the far right column of keys (column of 3 keys on the 1st edition Chroma) as modifiers. Top to bottom; Esc (to bring up the in game menu), CTRL, and Shift. The button on the right above the thumb stick is my third modifier (ALT). Using these modifiers in conjunction with the primay bank of 12 keys (again 1st edition Chroma), I can map EVERY single command in game, everything. The only time I use my keyboard is for chat. That's it. Using modifiers gives me no less than 84 commands that I can bind. More than enough for any PC game out there.
I know right. He just probably didn't know that the option was there.
(Sorry for the late response)
I think he thought mainly about fps where people don't really use modifiers. Usually ctrl / shift are for walking / crouching. I guess we could use alt as a modifier for some actions like selecting a grenade type, or selecting weapons in quake. But then something like walking in diagonal + selecting a smoke (for example ALT + T) in csgo would become CTRL + W + A + ALT + T, it's a nightmare and unusable when walking to the right side because D and T are the same finger. Also ALT requires the thumb which means no jump, in quake for example the jump key must be available at all time
Wouldn’t be enough keys for me 😕 I play FF14 but that’s just me
Man my G13 is a beast. I personally find it more ergonomic than a regular keyboard. I only use it for work, now though. The macros help a ton!
You can have my G13... when you pry it from my cold dead fingers! Seriously I think I will cry when it breaks.....
That's how I felt about my old nostromo

@@thecaffineman well I don't have a midi keyboard (which sucks) so every time I want to write and specially if I'm transcribing I have the keys assigned to every note. Also I have a key for pretty much every cord quality if I need to get harmony as part of a lead sheet and it's also pretty useful to move between large scores to have a horizontal movement mouse wheel apart from the vertical one
I use the thumb button for Hypershift, which makes it sooo much better. I find I can play most games even better than without it. Using the hypershift, I can even hit the M key to bring up my map, and keys that I normally wouldn't be able to press.
Same here bro. Except i have 5 layer of Hypershift. I can hit all key on Keyboard including numpad and F1-F12 except Caplock haha. How? I've been using gamepads since I first learned about them, starting with the Microsoft Commander, then the Nostromo, G13, and currently using the Razer Orbweaver. These are so much more comfortable than resting your hand over a keyboard, and the ability to reprogram any key (including macro support) makes them feel so natural in comparison. The single greatest peeve I have for them (beyond the fact that good ones come out so rarely, and long waits between generations) is that I use the thumbstick for movement - same as a controller - but the default keymappings on all these devices are using keys under the fingers.
That's just because game devs assume people are using regular keyboards. I typically just change the default keymapping in each game to match my default orbweaver layout. Either that or I just load my default orbweaver mapping for game type if I'm just trying out a game and then tailor a custom one if I end up playing the game for awhile.
Who else is here trying to figure out why anyone would use this?
Who else was amazed by how useful this thing can actually be after watching this video?

June 2022. Still using my Tartarus v2 can't play games without it. Normal keyboards are just too inefficient for playing games anymore. Everything from FPS, to MMORPG's, to open world games, literally cannot play them on a normal keyboard anymore after using this device. I think they are great. Use to use it when I played wow. I liked the directional thumb knob for movement. Way back when it was the belkin n52te.
i still got a Brand new n52te in the box:-) love these things
@@tek_soup Awesome. It really helped me years ago going from console gaming to pc gaming.
Same, have a couple belkins, a logitech, an orbweaver, tartarus and a tartarusv2. The synapse software is horrible and razer as a company/support has gone to !#$@. But this concept, and the original n52te ergonomics are unparalleled in some style games imho.
I had one of the belkin n52te and liked it better than the Razer versions. Sadly i lost it in a move or it was stolen.
Please refresh my memory a bit. Was the N52 and the Nostromo the same keypad? It's been so long I can't remember anymore.
As a PC gamer I think this is of most use to people used to playing on consoles. For long time PC gamers I feel it would be hard to relearn the controls for titles we've played for years. Learning new games is probably a lot easier though. I base this on my experiences using MMO centric mice. I discovered that any in game I was reasonably proficient at I tended to forgo the programmed keys and macros, using the keyboard instead. As I'm not a competitive player I didn't feel the need to force myself to relearn the controls. I still like the idea of a programmable keypad like this, I just realize that personally I wouldn't really see a large advantage in having one.
had the n52 from belkin, it was good. really i used it for not gaming with macro keys.i wish this was actual mechanical switches
Yeah the V2 is based on the same structure. The Orbweaver has actual mechanical switched though.
-D.
I've still got my n52 also!
ive been gaming with Nostromos and now Tartarus v2 for years, I love them. I disagree with the lack of buttons. I use space on the thumb to actually switch to a different key map, returning to the original on release. This effectively gives you 38 keys.
I use the thumb for shift/alt/ctl/tab
I used one of those for a while and the comfort is unmatched, but since one game I play quite often is an MMO, the lack of keys is quite noticeable. Even when you only miss one or two, it's a total let down sadly.
I think the sweet spot to "cut" a keyboard for the left hand, which is also used in some ergo layouts that split it in the middle for a better typing angle, is to go until the G/T/5 keys, but even then it's still lacking for some games.
I use an original Tartarus V1, and I must say, at first I thought the same, that in complex games there isn't enough keys, but once you discover the keymap switching feature that idea goes out the window, I use joystick for wasd and use the bottom thumb button on "keymap switch on hold" mode to switch the keymap to a secondary pad layout, you can cycle or switch and can map hundreds of keys and macro's if necessary, it just takes the dedication to set it up and learn it correctly.
was about the say the same, keymap switching and the ability to switch to or have a toggle like feature expands the available button macros. Usually I end up with 4 keymaps for a software and since I also own a V1, that has 15 keys...15 keys *4 is about 60 keys and macros. that's like 2 times the letter keys in a normal keyboard, plenty of keys for macros or direct keyboard remapping for games. And all in one hand.
I'm very interested in a one handed gaming pad like this for sure - though, I use these types of things(right now I use a wireless add on num pad intended for laptops to achieve similar usage) as SUPPLEMENTAL to my full size Logitech 613, rather than a complete replacement.
Having never been a big fan of using keyboards for playing games(I don't get the hype, keyboards are in no way, shape, or form ergonomically designed for gaming-style use, even gaming boards making ZERO accommodations in button layout or anything - obviously the MOUSE is the 'superior' piece of the hardware combo, not the keyboard), supplemental key pads allow me to put my main game controls on the key pad, with any secondary/less commonly used controls remaining on the full size keyboard that I set just off to my left side, out of the way of the mouse(and key pad), but easily within reach being just left of the key pad.
There are also supplemental num pads with mechanical switches as well, if that's important to you.
This combination makes for a much more ergonomic, very flexible/configurable, and, for me, much more logical layout than just a standard keyboard. Expandable too, I really want to add a Stream Deck to the setup as well, push it to the next level. And, if I end up getting something like this too(something actually meant for gaming rather than just adding num pad capabilities to a laptop), then I probably will be able to just replace the keyboard and just use the gaming key pad, the supplemental num pad, and the Stream Deck to handle all gaming needs.
BTW, using these sorts of key pads makes for a much more manageable setup if using a wheel/pedals, flight controls, etc., given that only a handful of keys on the keyboard are typically used in these setups.
Underrated products!
You should look into the Azeron gaming pad. Ten times better. I had problems with the transition to keyboard and hated using them for movement. The Azeron has an actual analog stick and the keys/buttons are set up in a unique way that is ergonomic and easy to use. My Razer chroma now is collecting dust
Prefer old school.. Still Just came for the quality of your videos :v
I've been using these for years now, I started with the first Nostromo.
Every time I find myself having to use a keyboard, I wonder how can people usually press some key combinations that are trivial on a device like this (movement + 2 or 3 + shift for example)
I use this for every game pretty much (the alternative being a controller if I'm on couch or the game really works best with one), and I have to disagree with you on the video: the more buttons a game requires, the more the advantage is clear to me. Kinda easy use a keyboard for wasd + 4/6 buttons. I used this in WoW back when as an healer you were kind-of-expected to have 20+ binds all to be used promptly in the middle of the fight while moving. Just ctrl+ or shift+ or have it swap keymaps. Takes a while to setup, but if you do it good you only do it once and works for pretty much every game. Last time I changed my config for a game was in 2012 for XCOM.
Ofc you will never replace your keyboard which is always going to sit on you desk and i still use it from time to time for non-action commands and chat.
I'd love to see more options though, not just Razer's. Not so satisfied myself with Razer's hardware. I went through a LOT of these in all these years, meanwhile I still have the same keyboard (not Razer's) which is still looking and working great after 10+ years. And working in IT mostly from home I can assure I use my keyboard a LOT more than my Orbweaver (which now is 3yo and has 3 keys that are not working properly anymore)
any suggestions for one I could try? I find keyboard awkward for gaming due to growing up on controller but do like aiming with a mouse
I grew up on consoles, so moving to a keyboard and mouse to play games was always weird to me. i use the Razer Orbweaver to bridge that gap - the D-Pad thumbstick thing I have bound to WASD and that helps my muscle memory, and it means i have extra keys/fingers for the main key area. I love it!
I hate taking a finger off of wasd to perform actions, so the thumb stick seems super useful.
For me its perfect. After years of Logitech G13, Razer Orbweaver and now Tartarus v2 i could not do without. Fucking brilliant
For MMORPG's like World Of Warcraft it's more than perfect
It's a godsend, I have one of those paired with a 12 button mouse and with two layers programmed it's pretty much the way wow should be supposed to be played
@@AlejandroCaicedoPUJ I agree
I also want to have it to play WoW. I wonder to move your character, do you use arrow keys on the keypad or joystick(or whatever it is called)?
How about bdo?
@@reeeeeeee-e2g
Bdo is combo based game, and you have much less skills... In WoW your character uses alot of skills all the time that you have to keybind somehow
To all of the peeps here i say Belkin N52 Nostromo.............. Also, while it takes some time getting used to it keyboard you glance over serveral other benefits. One- it works amazing in MMO's. Have been doing so for 10 years+ secondly, it also allows users to re-bind ANY Game to the same buttons using profiles. So if for some reason Game #1 has c for crouch and can't be remapped to ctrl, simply remap the ctrl-key to C on the Tartarus. Without messing with your keyboard.
Other than that... if you really want mech switches, check out the Orbweaver.
I have the original N52 Nostromo from way back in 2004. Unfortunately, it only works with my older Power Mac G4 desktop but not the current 2010 iMac I own which ticks me off. I tried plugging the Nostromo to the iMac one day, a few years ago, and it didn't work as if there was no response. Loved that keypad for my Photoshop and digital art workflow.
I also had an original n52, replaced it with an n52te which I still use.
Hi,
I own the Belkin (company bought by Razer) Nostromo, the Razer Orbweaver Stealth and the Razer Tartarus V2, purchased in that order.
All of them had their fair use (thousands of hours) and I felt mostly happy with them for gaming or productivity.
The common drawback is the lack of durability. The Nostromo didn't had any major issue appart from the keys becoming "transparent" as the print on the most used keys (wasd) started to fade away.
The Orbweaver Stealth had the common "swelling glue" issue on the palm rest and I had to fully remove it then clean the glue and put it back. Overall, it was nice and didn't fail me. The thumbpad quality is questionable though if not poor.
The Tartarus v2 is an improvement in a sense it has a full row of keys added, so I can get more binds out of it. The fact it doesn't use mechanical key switches makes it a bit quieter, even though the "Orbweaver stealth" was supposed to be... quiet. The thumbpad is basically of the same quality...
Unfortunately, the build quality of all Razer products is pretty poor and the micro switches used for the thumbpad (same as mouse button ones btw) are really terrible (only 4 switches are used, even though it can be configured as a 8 directions stick, it actually isn't).
My first Tartarus v2 device had a faulty thumb button about one year and a half after I purchased it so I could get a replacement unit for free on Amazon but it eventually happened again recently and it wasn't under warranty anymore (it happened about two weeks ago). I purchased the switches on aliexpress then proceeded to replace the faulty one (my soldering skills are pretty bad but I still managed to do it so, it's not that hard) and the device is working again.
I know that the other thumb buttons switches will eventually fail me and I'm already ready to swap them (got a pack of 10 for less than 2€).
I still love these devices over a single keyboard because it makes you have access to custom bindkeys with games/apps profiles and it's great.
I wish the poor quality thumbpad was a true analog thumbstick and the overall build quality was better but... it's Razer right ? You can't expect much out of them in that regard, they have to make their products break just after the end of the warranty period so you'll buy the newer versions eventually.
my 50 cents.
This review was spot on! I got it for half a year now and cant play without anymore! The muscle memory switch from keyboard to the tartarus was a bit hard but after you got that the shift is smaller it is very nice to use. I especially love the 16 key for my ctrl because it lies so deep compared to the shift i have at 11. I play Apex the most and got all my meds and shields on the dpad which is great! The lack of the g key was weird but i ve put it on the 15 key , I ve put the f key at 19 which works really great for me! For everyone who wants a great small mechanical keyboard for not to big of a price I would definitely recommend it! I rate it a 9 out of 10 only because the lack of adjustment that comes with the more expensive Orbweaver. One of the best birthday gift I ever got!
i prefer my Logitech G13 and i bought a couple of them when Logitech was selling them for $39 on amazon. the "ergonomics" of Razer gamepads actually hurt my wrist with prolonged use... which is obviously going to be something different for every person.
Very true. I have giant meat claws and it fits my hand like a glove. But I can see how smaller hands would get lost in the caps/shift and the 1-5. The G13 does have more buttons, but the tartarus has much better ergonomics
Man thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this -- recently made a purchase because of it. Anyhow I am currently using it for CAD work and to be honest, it is like productivity on overdrive. Never knew that a random scroll wheel on a separate device could be so useful hahaha. Wishing you a merry christmas and happy new year!
I use my Orbweaver all the time. I love it
For anyone think about getting this I just bought this and built my first rig , I shattered my left wrist 15 years ago and using a key in the traditional sense hurt like a living hell, this right here is FIRE 🔥, programming the keys in razer software is easy and can set up and save keybinds in the software for each game , I don’t know how many mappings you can save at a time, This plus the Naga pro is an exceptional combination
I recently bought the Tartarus Pro. Which has the analog switches where you can program two separate commands to the same key at different actuation points, as well as using the round button on the top of the D-pad you canto switch profiles momentarily and the keys switched over while i press it for even more command functions. Which has saved a lot of time and effort, after the long process of setting up all the keys to the specific style I needed. Ergonomically they are excellent.
I have a mechanical version and it's my favorite thing ever.
By any chance do you know how much pressure you need in order for the switches to activate? My current keyboard takes like 45 grams of pressure. And I want to get this, but can't if it's the membrane version.
I would use this for Macros, not a main keyboard replacement
Or an Elgato mini replacement
for a fucking 90$
I'm going to get the Tartarus V2 on the 16th of November (in 2024, obviously) and am very excited to try it in Fortnite. I currently use a Redragon one handed keyboard so the Razer won't seem so odd. The big difference is the thumbstick, which may take some time to get used to. Great review and your content is awesome! Thank you again.
I use the dpad for movement as a replacement for wasd and unlocks me the ability to use one finger for movement instead of 3, and I play Apex which requires a lot of movement.
Dang! That intro was right out of Russell Wilson's bedroom!!! lol
When I first started playing PC games I felt like I was going to get arthritis playing a MMO this save my hand's life
Jason do you aim with the joystick or mouse
I have arthritis from gaming and this problem is really annoying
Especially when wanted to handle metals and handshakes
V3 no? the Belkin N52te was first.
Tartarus combined with a logitech G10 and moving the shift ket to the offset left click makes it really easy, also having the additional inputs on the G10 means games like the Division and Tarkov are easy enough to map as you can set a key to ALT+ which means you can cover essentially a whole keyboards worth of functions between them. The real pain is remapping it in game, however after you have found a set up that works between the two, you can map every game to be the same keys and after that it's very comfortable. I also use it for zBrush and Photoshop where I have a lot of shortcuts and CTRL+Shift or ALT+Shift functions, etc now on single keys rather than having to hold them both down.
0:02 That could be a nice desktop wallpaper, dayum
Been using mine for over a year now, it's great for FPS.
I still own the Belkin N52te. I dont understand how this is going ''obsolete". Ive been using this for over 10 years and it still works. Planning on getting this model because it has an extra row of keys that would help alot.
how does the n52 still work ... the internet is full of infos that it doesnt work anymore becouse of new windows and stuff ....
i tried one out for gaming couple months ago, i will never go back. normal keyboard feels cramped now.
Bill McLane why does it feel cramped? The shift and control?
Its actually crazy that ASDW is standard for movement in pc games still. A joystick is so much more efficient.
no. no. no. stop the lies hahha.
I loved my Tartarus while i had it. I was using it in WoW for a while and I bloody loved it, it is very versatile and useful for soooo many applications.
I hate that Razor doesn't have much in the way of competition in this space. After gaming on the old Steelseries Merc, when it stopped being supported I could not go back to a regular keyboard. It's just so inferior for gaming. So I bought an Orbweaver. I actually really like using it, but it broke after 2 years, requires a sign in to a terrible app, and honestly still pales in comparison the the gaming section on the merc. The only thing better about it is the ergonomics, and even then only by a slight margin.
Seriously though, we need some competition in this space, and I wish they were more popular. I wish I could leave Razor for another product, but the only other gaming pad with ortholinear keys is the Ergodox EZ board... which is even more insanely expensive.
I started with the ZFang and Laptop, later bought a Merc Stealth (steel series now owned the rights).
I am still kicking myself for not having made a back-up of the folder for the keyboard layouts before the website went down. Also super annoyed that Steelseries did not add support for Zfang and Merc to their own website.
I'm surprised Logitech haven't developed a new one. They have controllers and instrument panels for flight simulators which is a very niche market.
Have been using the tartarus v2 for over a year I think, has been my favorite one so far. Razer products are overpriced, but it still beats paying 100+ for the orbweaver, which I have had 2 of and they both had the glue on the palm rest essentially "melt off" after a year or two. One of the best things about these are the thumb buttons, which make awesome modifier keys (or just extra quick access buttons) for use alongside a naga for example. I also really prefer the straightened keys, rather than the standard keyboard, where keys aren't straight for typing purposes. There really needs to be more competition in the market for these. The design could really be improved upon and I would happily take cheaper membrane switches etc. if it meant these cheaper models could be sold for $50 or less.
When it comes down to it, standard keyboards weren't invented with gaming in mind at all. I think a proper gaming keypad gives the average player more comfort and ease of use, as well as a potential advantage.
I have an old Razer Naga Hex V2. Can confirm the glue razer puts on grips just magically melts after a couple years.
Still using Logitechs G13 and still hope a new redifined version ...
Sadly I doubt that's ever going to happen, while these gamepads are so good and deserve more attenion, they just don't sell and companies don't think they're worth it, razer being such a dedicated pro gaming brand they just barely get enough sales on these to make it worth it, leaving no room for anyone else to do so without charging outrageous premiums
@@DireZyre im afraid you are right.. Maybe i just have to learn to use a real keyboard some day 🤔
This thing is awesome for photoshop, blender, gaming, you name it. I recommend it for sure. You can also switch profiles on the fly and make a different profiles for each software you're using. If you have a large stylus for drawing, a keyboard can take too much space but this thing is small enough for something like this. Also noted it's amazing for games ofc.
I started out with the Nostromo many years ago but a recent incident involving hot tea and the controller put paid to a couple of keys. So I got myself the Tartarus v2 and can't be happier. I have to keep my feet up to control swelling and other issues. This controller allows me to sit side on with my feet up next to the computer. I then rest it on my left thigh to use with my left hand and then my right hand comfortably controls the mouse. I can look at the monitor without twisting my back that had caused lower back issues in the past. Win-win for me.
I've used a nostromo since Diablo 3 released. Just got the Orbweaver and I'm loving it as well.
Is it easier to play diablo 3??
@@shanewalker6986 I had just bought a 13 inch laptop so using the keyboard was fatiguing me a bit. Definitely nothing required but when playing a demon hunter it was nice to have the "stand still and shoot blindly" button mapped to a thumb button.
@@jordanputnam6973 thanks mate gonna buy on for sure
*Tartarus V2 Mapping Tip:*
Swap ALT and Spacebar buttons on the keypad. Thumb Button + 20.
Map 1 = ESC.
2,3,4,5 as 1,2,3,4.
6 = Tab.
11 = Shift.
16 = CTRL.
I’ve owned a n52te, two G13s, and an orbweaver. I would always have one in my pc gaming arsenal.
Aside from a mechanical options on this model, nearly every issue you stated was a a simple lack of understanding of how to tailor the device to your needs that come from weeks and months of usage. There is nothing in gaming, outside of RTS, that this does not do better than a keyboard. Pair it with a multibutton mouse and after a few moths of use you will flatout REFUSE to ever play on a keyboard again.
Lowkey been enjoying your videos. Has gotten to a point that your videos are the first I go to for reviews
Keep it up, bro!
Would love to see a version for the mouse left handed people like me >:(
Its good but expensive...for membrane keypad...
that is true, even more so when it is meant for a specific function.
it's useless
It offers the best of both mechanical and membrane keyboards for less than a mechanical one. Why do you think it is for a specific purpose. I jst got mine and have profiles set for games and another for using the pc. I have keys set to scroll though programs, open my browser and irectly into my compse email. paste saved text such as email address or signature. With practice using this and dragons naturally speaking, I can toss my big lanky keyboard in the trash and sit back in my recliner instead of hovering over a desk.
@@user-gu5cs2wt9g because this is a device obviously for mmos, you get zero benefit from this in fps game, or third person shooters. as it is more about the dpi of your mouse and not the keyboard. this doesn't benefit racing games, or rpgs it doesn't even benefit mobas, as you can get a razer naga trinity which gives you the grid cover for mobas. it is literally for 1 style of game. as all these other games, don't have that many keys to require it.
Idk what's the big deal about Mechanical keyboards lol
Love the channel! Keep up the great work!!!
I really hope the analog doesn’t disappear. I really do believe if they want to innovate in games with keyboard movement analog sticks is the way to go.
still love these things for gaming, if you have never used one you dont really understand. they have quirks, but once setup for you, there is nothing better.
Im using an orbweaver, love it with my scimitar. Though someone needs to start really competing, a lower price would be nice BUT I still reccomend it.
I have a Tartarus v1 + scimitar setup, but had to throw the mouse away since right click and left click buttons stopped functioning correctly. Lame. But still .. Not really like they have any sensible competition in that mmo mice segment.
"10 editing shortcuts"
*laughs in Taran*
Hey! I got that reference.
I still use the G13 from logitech I have 2 for backup's and hope they will produce a newer Keypad some time soon. I can't go back to just keyboard.
just have the 2 mate and breed them.

The Tartarus is a god-send for those moving from controller to mnk for the first time. Being able to map AWSD to the thumb stick is a game changer that this video doesn’t give any credit to at all. It’s 100% worth it if you feel held back from getting a pc because you might feel learning keyboard too daunting.
I have never used WSAD , razer is one of the only who make a one handed keyboard with a thumb stick for movement started off on the Nostromo a long time ago and i could not play with out this device.
it's honestly what you're used to. I got used to 1 handed keyboards because I switched from controller and incorrectly assumed that I would use the direction stick for movement. But I ended up learning to move with the WASD format anyways and used the stick for directions.
So I never had adjustment issues with a smaller shift key for instance, never got attached to a G key, I throw grenades with my mouse.....
And just as a reg keyboard player might struggle to switch, I think these boards will never truly go away because of people like me that got used to them and won't use a regular keyboard.
They are great for flight simulators like Prepar3D from Lockheed Martin.
Nostromo n52 for Lineage 2 C3/C4 - imba, nice time ☺
Had a Nostromo for over five years. Absolutely loved it. It changed how I play games forever. Upgraded to a Tartarus V2 recently with continued fantastic results. It may not be for everyone but since when was that ever a requirement. Game on!
I've got one of the older Orbweaver models, and I personally think it's great. Definitely, if I've got my full keyboard on hand, that's better for something like typing this comment, but for gaming, I can actually place my Orbweaver onto the left armrest of my chair and then I only have to rest my mouse hand on the desk edge. Makes for a very comfortable solution, and if I had a wider pad on the right armrest - maybe something custom - I could put the mouse there too and have far better ergonomics.
As mentioned in the video, using the keypad for macros can be very useful, too. Outside of gaming, I use my Orbweaver for IT-related task sequences, where the buttons are mapped to call Terminal functions or launch specific automated workflows. Makes for very fast work, once you get the muscle memory down.
I think these small micro boards are cool and I would likely buy one to free up decisions regarding my full keyboard. Sometimes you want a dedicated gaming board with the full mechanical switches, but I'm also a typist. I write a LOT of words in a typical day. Sometimes the gaming keyboards don't go too well with a nice clean serene feel (what with the flashy colors and gaming look of the typical gamer's keyboard). With a small board like this, I can rest at ease knowing my gaming can go to the next level with OP mech switches, RGB lighting on demand, and ergonomic comfort. It is also possible to completely separate the considerations regarding purchasing a typing keyboard. There are full and 60% keyboards that are highly customizable for typing comfort AND gaming, but not everyone has that budget nor the situation to have a full gaming keyboard (significant other's preferences, workstation look/feel, serenity, and esthetics). I was super curious as to why none of the pros use these and even turn their 60% keyboards sideways. I suppose there are all sorts of solutions and preferences. This micro boards look cool and, (as I do so believe) as always, they are one of those specialized devices that even while trying to be multi useful still fall into the category of "If only I had enough budget to get everything I want for my game room." lol
The snakes are in mate season.
Dimitri are you trying to say that single dudes doesn't even worth a snake?🤣
