    ‘Razer’ and ‘competitive prices’ cant be used in the same sentence

    • @josephtaylor1330
      @josephtaylor1330 5 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      Usually agreed, but their peripherals are competitive in price with the rest of the gaming peripherals. The viper wireless with the dock at 150$ matches the GPW launch retail price which has gone down due to being out for half a year.

    • @HardwareCanucks
      @HardwareCanucks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +251

      I think you might be confusing "competitive" with "inexpensive". For example the Huntsman TE is about the same price as the G PRO. Definitely not cheap but no Razer tax.

    When the switches have two actuation points it would make much more sense to use tactile switches instead of linear switches. Only then you can really feel a difference between the two actuation points.
    Just like camera triggers. Just a light press and the camera starts the autofocus. You press harder, feel a physical bump, and the camera takes the picture.
    That works really well even though those triggers have only a travel distance of about a millimeter maximum. But it wouldn't work at all without that tactile feeling.

      Doesn't really matter since the thumbstick wears out in like a month. Just check your local used electronics marketplace and there's a lot of these things with broken thumbstick and unresponsive keys.

      @chrisogrady28 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ironically only entry level cameras use two stage shutter buttons with a noticeable click. High end cameras just have squishy buttons and you have to muscle memory your way to knowing where the dual actuation is. I think it's stupid but it's also because in higher end photo work we normally use back button AF anyway so don't want the shutter having a click in the middle. I really wish they used an analogue shutter release that you could set to adjust your burst rate dynamically, the harder you push the faster the fps. My camera shoots up to 30fps in photos and it would be nice to gently push it for 1fps or fully depress for 30, and everything in between. Sorry for the tangent

I already have a split keyboard, the Kinesis Freestyle Edge gaming keyboard, which is pretty great. But I just think thumbs are just so under-utilized by PC peripherals. Having used a Razer Orbweaver with my left hand for 5+ years now, that's all I really want. Two Orbweavers connected by a cord in the middle. There are other split keyboards like the Ergodox which do have more modifier thumb keys, but the Orbweaver with its directional pad and now this scroll wheel add so much more functionality. Razer is silly not to recognize that right-handed users would also purchase these products designed for left-handed use.

    The Tartarus v2 has horrible ergonomics unless you have long fingers. The adjustable hand rest is to high up when moved forward for shorter fingers and makes it uncomfortable to get to the #20 key for spacebar usage. Then if you move it back to get to the 20 key and lower it due to being to high, you can not get to the top row of keys without picking up your hand and moving it. Thus you cant get to the top row and also reach the 20 key at the same time. That said I am not going to just complain without making some suggestions. Ship with an optional wrist rest that fits flush with the unit. As using the Tatarus without the wrist rest feels ergonomically better and also angle the top 2 rows of keys in a concave fashion back to the hand to make them easier to reach.

    Knowing how Optical switches function to detect analogue input, I'm surprised that the OEM for these switches, a little-known Chinese company called Dongguan Mingjian, managed to integrate analogue functionality into their design. See, previously, Wooting's switch OEM, another Chinese company called Adomax, achieved analogue sensing in their optical switches through a very complicated reflecting lens system that bounced a light beam two times in such a way as to allow varying amounts of light to reach the sensor as u pressed the keys higher or lower. Mingjian's design is a simple one-way beam of light that simply gets blocked or unblocked as the key is pressed past the actuation point. That they somehow managed to make this far simpler mechanism work in an analogue way is quite amazing from a design standpoint.

    Razer ... listening ? What you on man ?
    The tatarus line is plagued with faulty d-pad switches. Their support is non existent at best, but mostly just insulting. The orbweaver would dissassemble itself after a year or so.. screws would become loose, and the double sided sticky tape keeping the rubber in place would break down and make a huge mess. Not to mention key coating that would wear off extremely quickly. Not even going to touch synapse v3. Are you a dev, and want to develop around some of the functionality that synapse provides, but need some clarification on function or feature ? A kind email to razer support will get you a canned 'go eff yourself' response. I have a pair of belkins n52te that have lasted longer than any of the razer rehashed garbage. Premium pricing for premium garbage.

    I use this baby as I have space issues as I game on a laptop. I do really like it with a couple of caveats.
    1) yes the actuation points seem to close even when set as far apart as possible but if you choose key binds that are more synergistic it will really shine. Like one I set up with the stop staring a knee slide and the bottom to trigger a melee attack. It’s hard to hold the key at a higher activation so I recommend setting up combos that work together or just ignore that function.
    2) the keys are susceptible to accidental triggering so I moved the first actuation down a bit to save on any fat finger typing issues
    3) hand/palm rest is actually kind of slippery and I found that I kept moving around so I put a small strip of moleskin (material used to cover areas of a shoe that is rubbing) on the palm rest and it worked wonders.
    4) yes the profiles can be a pain to work with. I currently have 5 set up ( destiny 2, Witcher 3, no man’s sky, Control, Homeworld remastered) so I have a small cheat sheet showing with profile is which so I can manually select. The synapse 3 is still kinda suspect and tends to forget its profiles.
    5) setting up the key bindings can take time. I try to mirror other profiles to reduce constant muscle memory changes.
    6) price is quite high..specially in Cdn$ but after a couple hundred hours with it I am loathe to go back to the laptop keyboard only.

    I hope that the release of this Razer Tartarus Pro will inspire Logitech to get off their butts and finally re-release the Logitech G13 keyboard. Now that was and is an amazing keyboard for PC gaming. I still use it today for every PC game. Thumb to move and 4 fingers for abilities... Love my Orbweaver! I never understood removing a key just to incorporate a scroll wheel that isn't all that good anyway. Now if they put something like the weighted scroll wheel of a Logitech G502 that actually had some discernible tactile stops or could be unlocked for free spinning as well as incorporating some sort of on board hardware memory for storing profiles on the device, then I might consider upgrading. But as far as I'm concerned the entire Tatarus series is a downgrade from my 5 year old Orbweaver for these reasons and as you stated the adjust-ability of it.

It's literally all I fucking want, without spending 450$ plus on an old Logitech g13 with membrane switches and a tiny analog surface. But hey, it has a real analog stick and there's a reason it sells for so much now. Just can't believe the only option we fucking have in 2023 is a shitty hori pad where the analog only works on controller mode, amd has a octagon ring around it ruining the feel while being a cheap pile of junk, or an azeron cyborg with a fantastic analog stick but it's 200+ dollars and has the weird flaps for buttons and I hate them. Seriously, I just fuckin want the tartarus pro with a real analog stick. That's it. That's all they gotta do, and I'll gladly throw money at them.

    What’s the use of joystick if you’re using the mouse at the same time?

    The one thing thats a no go for me is while there is a dedicated space bar key for thumb there is no crouch key for thumb. I do kinda want one for overwatch but I crouch spam alot and usually have it on my alt key.
