That is 7 tries Duhan van der Merwe has conceded like that since the NZ game last year; 1 v NZ, 3 v Ireland (although one was more of a missed high ball to be fair) and 2 against England - now 1 against us. I used to play a lot of football as a young man many years ago and I always said that you can pass accurately to your teammate without looking if you have practiced enough,, great to see that it can be done with a rugby ball as well, classy play.

Great game fron Libbock bar the kicking inaccuracies. Literally the only weakness in his game
Two of those 3 missed kicks were Rassie's fault. That 57 m kick was at the absolute limit of his range, if not further, and should rather have been sent to the corner. We saw with Louis Koen in the 2003 RWC game against England as well, when a player tries to force kicks the pull them left and they lose their rhythm for the next kicks.

Manie is obviously quite a confident guy and I reckon Rassie knew the impact that 57m kick would have had - then with both of those kicks being so far out to the right, Faf's left foot made sense. Just looking at the kickers in previous RWC wins, neither Joel nor Percy had that range unless on the Highveld and Pollard missed from that range in the 2019 final. 100% if Frans Steyn was on the field with any of those kickers, he would have been the one to take it.
People have very short memories. In 2019 WC, Pollards kicking was very average until the semi and the final, below 75% (EDIT: just checked and it was actually only 63% before the semi final and 87% for semi and final). Manie will come right with more time and in the meantime he can keep dazzling us with his passing, defense, kick passes and touch finders which are all very very good.
Scotland should be proud of their performance. The first half was great and South Africa upped their game in the second. Better than the ABs atm

when you meet Ireland who will match you up front. I called SA for the world cup months ago - I thought you had developed a 15 man game but perhaps against Scotland the dominant forward play was the way to go. That second try was sublime.

Yeah, hopefully our backline can grow into the tournament. Once they announced that centre pairing, I think we all knew the game plan was going to be fairly one dimensional. Am was a massive loss and de Allende isn't in great form imo.

I agree the rush defence was really good and Scotland defence was impressive. Even Scotlands attack was good the few times they had space. I think Scotland will do well against Ireland if they can defend as they did and just get some space for their backline. This is a tough group and Scotland deserve place in quater finals. Silly doing draw 3 yrs before RWC.

Libbock needs to work on his conversions. Will cost us a lot of extra points in the World Cup
Rassie needs to keep him kicking the kicks he is comfortable with, not the kicks that would have seen Frans Steyn stepping up in past years. It is just too far outside his range and if you know anything about trying to kick or hit a ball too hard, you will know that it throws your rhythm out for a while afterwards.BTW, that was around the same distance as the second kick missed by Pollard in the final.
It was a windy day but still no excuse tho... He'll get to that consistency & if he does Handre Pollard not getting his spot back

I think any team is happy only conceding 3pts in 80mins, especially against the 5th ranked team in the world before England, Wales, Australia, Argentina. 15pts margin, same as last time we played a test against them and in fact this was better due to it being RWC and the low amount of points conceded. There was a lot of talk about Russell and Libbok before the game but Russell was completely neutralized by the SA defence. I see commentators still calling Libbok the achilles heal so where would that put Russell? Libbok had an amazing no look kick in this game, an amazing wide pass against Wales and an amazing cross kick away against Argentina over the last month or so.

Agreed. Very concerning. 8 very kickable points. Makes a huge difference in those slogging matches. Our tactical kicking was also very poor at times. Gave no chance for our guys to contest and just gave the ball away. On another day, Scotland may have punished us.

They will but it was due to kit clash and we probably lost the toss for that. Same is France vs NZ. France at their home world cup and were playing in white. The green and gold will be back in the next game 😁

@@jacquesvdn the Springbok is usually on the chest but due to RWC regulations, the rwc logo must be displayed as well as only 3 logos on the front. The Protea is the national symbol. The Bokke wear the Springbok outside of RWC. Go look at the NZ or Wales games.

Could you please elaborate a bit further on Scotland's attacking inaccuracies ? I'll watch the game when I get time today, but just curious as to what you saw. I had money on the Springboks for this game, and the Ireland game. But I also have money on Scotland beating Ireland.
Darcy Graham was through towards the end of the 1st half and a pass to Van Der Merwe would have been an easy try. Can't afford to miss chances like that against the Springboks. Could be a winner takes all in the last game against Ireland

Eben has over 110 caps for South Africa and over 120 caps for various clubs. He’s been a stalwart in the international side since 2012 and has attended three World Cups. He’s a titanic figure in the Bok setup and one of the most formidable “enforcers” in the history of the sport. So, spot on observation!
Tough and important win against a formidable side. I liked how every player was dialled in defensive end - to keep Scotland at 3 points is a big feat.

Great effort from both teams. SA rush defense really hampered SCOTLAND. I thought the two packs were pretty even, and it was that cross field kick which Kolbe so masterfully scored that set them apart. Defense from both was outstanding.
