- The World Number one side Ireland faced the reigning World Champions South Africa in an electric encounter inside the State de France in Paris. The match was one of the most hotly anticipated fixture of the Pool stages of Rugby World Cup 2023, with an atmosphere to match it! After some incredible physicality, set-piece battles and tactical nous, the game went down to the wire, but Ireland managed to hold on against the Springboks and in doing so, laid down a marker to everyone else in the tournament ahead of the quarter-finals.

This was the match that made it clear that we needed to bring in Handre Pollard. Thank you Ireland, I genuinely don't think we would have won the world cup without you.
My top 5 fav matches in the comp
I think South Africa very much prefered playing France in the quarter finals.
As an Irish man, I would much preferred we didn't play NZ either. The gamble was them or France. Both difficult teams. Hindsight is a wonderful thing ahaha. Congrats on the win 🤙
This match was given to Ireland to avoid getting All Blacks in quarter finals
@@contraitaly7800 Hogwash!!
Bokkes don’t have preferences, we’d have spanked anyone, ultimately we spanked the team that spanked the Irish so your point is silly.
South Africa was not stunned, we played the then #1 ranked team in the world who was unbeaten for 16 odds games in a row. Ireland was (and still is formidable), the Boks knew it was going to be a tough match and the outcome was no surprise, Ireland played an absolute belter of a game.
They look very much stunned to me
Springboks are the only side to lose a pool game and win the Rugby world cup in the history of the competition and they have done it twice.
So what? Then the lesson is clear for the other teams: don't play at full strenght in pool games...save the best performance/players for knockout matches. That translates to squad depth. What I saw in Ireland is a team that plays their hearts out and then burned out in final more important matches. They're finished. It's like starting a marathon at full speed and expecting to end it the same way. No shame in losing a pool match if you have confidence they can make it all the way - which is what the Springboks did. Twice :)
If we beat Ireland, we would've had to play NZ in the QFs. Thanks to this loss we got to play the All Blacks in the final again! ❤
Would've been easier than France, which is the game of the decade
@@blaquenguni9249 they barely beat a 14 man NZ who kept them tryless. I doubt it would've been "easier"
Lol "we"
Mate you didn't play 😂
@@joshhudson7413 Again, If you watch that game again, notice that the Boks were on top of NZ up until they went a man down. The Boks literally changed their whole game style as soon as that happened and just played defensively. People can't say if this and if that. The game develops as it happens. If NZ had converted any of those missed kicks, and the Boks went behind, they would have changed it up.

Congrats Ireland on a well deserved win. See? It's not that hard to give credit ❤

Congratulations Ireland, from South Africa. 🇿🇦
Looking forward to building a rivalry with you seeing that we haven't won (m)any games against you.
Tbh, most South Africans like Irish rugby. You obviously need to filter out the social media users. Most people I know actually would’ve been happy if Ireland won the WC if not SA.
@@blizzard6741 I'm a bok fan and south african, the remark above was in relation to a lack of credit given to the springboks and all the sourness from various teams (supporters) against us ❤️ I'm glad to see teams like Ireland excell, and also good to see the fire in teams like Argentina, even teams like Tonga and Fiji are showing potential. It's just sad to see the sometimes unreasonable malice against the boks.
@@jle42Absolutely, online isn't representative of the majority of rugby fans, and also directly after any big close game emotions are high and you're going to see the 'flame' from that online.
I'll make a confession, I initially was one of those people who didn't give enough credit to the Springboks for their achievement... I felt that New Zealand were hard done by with, for example, the red card decision, and with South Africa there's always (no offense) flashbacks to the 1995 World Cup which was very likely set up for them anytime you see them getting the rub of the green a lot in World Cups.
But once the high emotions post-final died down, I was able to reflect on the tournament, and actually out of the two finalists the Sprinkboks did deserve to win the tournament, given the tougher route they had to the final and the toll big rugby games take on bodies.
The one team I'd feel bad for is France, as replays show that the defender started his run before the kicker took a step towards the ball, and who knows what might have happened had they scored that kick (not to mention the misfortune of Dupont's injury). But were France better than South Africa? No. They were equal, and really in both quarter-finals the teams were evenly matched and with such fine margins there's always a chance of something like that deciding the game - a coin toss.
Had France been the team to make this final, I don't think they'd have beaten the All Blacks. Not many teams have the endurance and toughness of South Africa to come through a tough semi-final and six days later play a New Zealand team who had a much easier semi-final and still overcome them.
In short, France and Ireland were imo the only teams that could beat South Africa this year with fresh rested teams, but neither of those teams have the depth or endurance to do what South Africa did - come from the group of death, take the tougher route to the final with two massive games instead of one, and then still have enough left in the final to scrap out a win.
So well done South Africa, nobody can deny that the Springboks deserve their place alongside the All Blacks as the gods of rugby, two teams which stand above all others. Forgive me for not giving you that deserved credit immediately after the final.
I also love seeing more teams starting to excel, particularly the Pacific Island teams like Tonga, Fiji and Samoa, I think most rugby fans do, such small nations producing such phenomenal rugby players throughout their history.
One of the games of the tournament. While it’s still difficult to reflect back on what could have been for Ireland, I think we need to acknowledge how the likes of SA and NZ just get knockout rugby. It almost feels, upon reflection, both knew they didn’t need to win all pool games. They just needed to build to a QF, regardless of opponent. While we also built, and were so close to getting it done, we were just a few % off which is the difference at this level. Ireland, SA, NZ and France are the 4 best teams in the world all capable of beating each other on any day. Looking forward to our tour next year, it should be great. And hopefully in 2027 we find that extra few % in a knockout game, because we are not far off it. Congrats SA on the well deserved WC trophy
Your biggest mistake was playing full strength teams in all your pool games, I rate Andy Farrel as the 2nd best "young" coach in the world behind Scott Robertson, I don't know why on earth he wouldn't rest his players. Ireland have a lot to learn still I guess
@@blaquenguni9249 Ireland kind of had to play Sexton from the beginning because he had had no game time before the world cup and because he was such a critical playmaker, but he was dead on his feet in the QF. Add to that, playing an injured Hansen and NZ were effectively playing against 13.
Die veldslag is verloor, maar die oorlog is gewen.

Don't think had anything to do with the Ireland match Boks lost. We could've gone for lineouts instead and won the match, as evidenced in the closing stages, just too little to late, and a bit of unfortunately officiating.
We were running simulations for knockout rounds in that match, assessing all the kicking options, ect. For all the 'group of death' hype, it was always only Ireland and Boks making it out the group. Scotland made valant attempt, but were never getting out unfortunately.

we have a tewo match test series coming up in the summer, ireland will have a chance to get No. ! spot back.
I’ve watched that ending 10 times now. The ball was not coming out yet so the ref moves to the other side in order to see it, at which point he is unfortunately on the wrong side and and can’t see the ball when it does come out. Very unfortunate timing. When he blows the whistle De Allende shows him the ball in disbelief but the ref had already made his decision and it was too late for him to revert it even if he at that point realised it was a mistake. The call was made just a second too soon. That ball was out. And considering it was their last chance and they where literally on the line; it’s quite likely they would’ve scored. That was so disappointing. Anyways no one is worried about it now that we won the World Cup. See you next year Ireland !
You forgot the pulling the maul down and Aki coming in from the side which should have been a penalty at least
If you study the SA try frame by frame it is clear that the pass to Kolbe was forward. Additionally, Hansen was taken out off the ball just before the pass was made. He was also taken out off the ball later in the game without any consequences. Earlier, Vandeflier had his hand deliberately stamped on, no penalty. Regarding the final scrum, when the ref starts asking 'where's the ball?' you'd better get it out immediately. The SA scrum half delayed too long. Two sides to every story. It is all a moot point anyway since Ireland failed against NZ.
The only match keeping Ireland fans alive rn.

A missed kick is what got you your try, Ireland turned down multiple easy kicks as well.
@@randomuruk7230 Ireland turning down kicks and going for the corner is a coaching/team decision. It's not an accident. @@kobuslouw9533 No you wouldn't, you would literally score less points. Half the kicks you missed were from your own half. They were hail mary chances and Libbok played a big role in getting them in the first place, you took those hail mary chances because the Boks couldn't score otherwise.
@@randomuruk7230 hahaha, you are contradicting yourself. You said we scored because of a miss kick, now you say Libbok played a big role in getting points. My guy... Faf WOULD NEVER KICK, unless the coaches didn't have faith in Libbok. Libbok went off after 30 min against Eng, not because he missed a kick, but because the coaches didn't have faith in him to carry the game. He wasn't even selected vs NZ. The very first injury replacement was Pollard, even before we played Ireland because the coaches knew then already they need Pollard. Libbok is not bad, I really like him. But he needs more time in the squad to get up to Springbok standards. Ire won by 4 points, SA missed 11 points off the tee. Pollard 100% kicking accuracy. EZ day with Pollard. It was after this game that I knew the Boks could win the tournament. Why ? Well they went at it in an experimental way ( if you watch the Boks regularly you would know this) as opposed to the pressure game they play in knockout matches and they STILL should have won this game if they had a kicker. We didn't on the day so that is our own fault and we gone punished for that. I did think Ireland had some great defence though and looked very clinical, I would not have been surprised to see them in the final. Well it was a lot more than that but yes that contributed. Ireland threw the game away in the last 10 minutes. After NZ missed a penalty, play resumes with NZ kicking to Ireland resulting in an immediate unpressured knock on. Back-to-back penalties turn a 1 point lead to a 4 removing the option of a drop goal which means the last few minutes of the game would have looked very different. They choked.
Where is it ...has it come out?..🤣🤣🤣 Ireland's scrum was starting to creak..I'm sure I heard PSTD. say in Afrikaans ...just don't score!..but that was a real game of rugby!
Still the World Champions 👀
