    Thanks so much for this information. First video I've seen that actually shows how these three fit the wrist. I'm going with the 37 quartz.

    I got a lot of watches, mostly vintage and 98% of these watches are mechanical of course. And then I have a couple of quartz Seiko, two Flightmasters, the only expensive watch with quartz is a Grand Seiko SBGV207g, bought it a short while ago second hand, only 6 months old. It’s an amazing piece of engineering, the more I look at it, the more I read on the technology behind it and admiring the zaratsu polishing the more respect I get for it. That it looks amazing it’s just another bonus. So I get it, quartz can be good too!

    The Grand Seiko SBGP003 is a quartz movement with a jumping hour hand feature much like a GMT function. You can just pull out the dial to adjust the hour hand only without stopping the seconds hand. It may not be a full GMT complication but this feature is very useful for traveling across time zones

    I bought a Seiko SUR317P1 for £100 and it looks as nice and fits as well as the GS quartz for a fraction of the price, with sapphire and 100m wr and 36mm. Beautiful.

    Austin, I love your coverage of Japanese horology. Guys in St. Paul, Minnesota, can cover Rolex and Tudor. Cajoled by my AD, I bought a GS SBGN009 9F GMT quartz piece with an embossed blue dial and a gold GS logo. I was smitten by having one watch that was always set to the right time and date. I found the bracelet very comfortable in comparison to my two Rolexes and the fit of the watch was great. In rapid succession, I bought a handwound dress piece with a blue Mt. Itawe dial and a spring drive diver on a metal bracelet. I sold the 9F only because I was trying to control my proliferating collection. I could see my three GSs as constituting a complete three piece watch collection. Why don’t you look into Minase for us? Cheers.

    Love the 37mm one. have you seen the SBGX297 with the greenish dial? I wish I could see a video of one...seems unlikely since it's a japan only model, but I think I might love it. Great channel BTW

    I have an SBGE211 that I just can’t connect with. GS cases are a work of art but over time I noticed the quietness of the Spring Drive is not something I could fall in love with. I really wanted to like my GS but it’s just collecting dust, can’t connect with it like I do with the Rolexes.
    Maybe a manual wind, high-beat is something I’d like.

    I really like the silver/champagne dial. I bought a sbga 387 about 14 months ago and I really enjoyed it for about 6 months. It had a nice light blue dial and it was limited. I let people’s judgements get to me and I sold it surprisingly I didn’t loose 1 dime on a 6,800 GS. Well about 1 month later that GS didn’t sell for less than 8,500 , and still doesn’t. Lol just goes to show you don’t listen to anyone except yourself

      Thanks BB - I know exactly how you feel. Great watches I know, and compared to a Rolex, much easier to fund...but, like you, they just don't excite me in the least. My head knows they're great, but my heart is just left bored and void of emotion. As we know, attraction is not a choice!

    Austin I admire your knowledge about Rolex, but it is not true that GS second hand misses the markers. It has twin motor system to provide perfect alignment of the second hand and the marker. Dont belive in rumors, find nice GMT quartz and enjoy it 👍🏼

    • @watchsymposium
      @watchsymposium  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm just going on what I've seen. It seems just about any GS display will have at least one quartz piece that's not quite hitting those second marks. I liken it to the Rolex crown on the rehaut at the 12 o'clock; finding one off-center is surprisingly easy. These two were dead-on though!

    • @RustyLongPipe
      @RustyLongPipe 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Austin Daniels i have two business partners with Rolex watches (yachtmaster and submariner) and neither of their Rehaut crowns are aligned properly. They’re not bothered by it to be fair. My seadweller rehaut is perfectly aligned and it WOULD bother me if it wasn’t lol

    GS are great watches, implacable finish - seeing me spending a 4 digit amount - don’t think so. Compared to my Seikos from the SNKL series or Sarbs - IHO I can’t the see the huge difference between finishing and price ratio - not to mention the expensive service costs on a GS. I'm already curious if it will actually be a GS 😳

    The bigger the diameter, the thinner the watch should be to minimize the impact on the wrist. It appears the thickness of the automatic you showed is not something on purpose but a mistake...which is weird from grand seiko. The 37 mm quartz was the BEST by far. The power reserve version was The worst because the lug - case ratio was a mistake in terms of overall design look.

    I had the 37mm sbgx265 but sold it. I found a nicer one, the 38.5mm sbgv237. This one has a unique case and bracelet. For GMT quartz, I have the 39mm sbgn005 which is one mm thicker at 11mm. For mechanical, I have the 37mm sbgw231. The thickness is 11.5mm bec of the dome glass. It hugs the wrist and look much thinner. I also have the elegance series 38.5mm sbgk005. Again, this have a dome glass. This one actually look thinner than the 231. For spring drive, I have the 38.5mm elegance series sbgy003. This one is 10.2mm tks and also has a dome glass. This one looks thinner than the previous. I also have those that you showcased. I wear these on leather straps. These are more robust watches for different occasions. I have the tall and handsome Peacock. Wear this on a fine alligator strap. This is a keeper. All these 40mm watches have small dials, if you notice, about 32mm . It makes the watch looks smaller. There are many other features that I look at other than size. No problems.

      @@alienhatz3265 Haha..tks, but, I have no interest in making videos. I just like to spend time collecting seiko. So much fun. Anyway, I share a little more on size of watches and dials. I have the 1st GS, the 1st ss GS ( 57GS), the 1st Automatic GS ( 62GS). These watches range from 34.5-36.5mm. One thing they have in common is the size of the dial - 32mm, which is the same as the modern GS. They are small watches which look bigger than number suggests. So, talking about dimensions without going into the specifics, is not helpful.
      Anyway, my grail is the higher end GS. made in the micro artist studio. You get a Phillipe Dufour for a fraction of the price. It's no wonder that the 76k sbgz001 are sold out.😅

    • @canonyeo4286
      @canonyeo4286 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hatz, I share with you a bit more which you don't hear on TH-cam. The 1st GS, the Goldfeather, the Crown Special etc have the kind of 32mm dome dial. The purpose is to make the watch looks bigger. If you put the 1st GS beside the 38.5mm sarb035, you will get a shock. The next thing common to these 3 watches is that they have very long minute hand, and, an even longer sec hand. The hands are bent to curve with dome for easier reading. It may surprised you that, this kind of manual wind Three Centre Hand are very rare in the Swiss or German high end watches, vintage or modern. The modern GS manual dress watches are also made this way, only that, they are HPP, High Performance Precision, like the vintage caliber 4522, which, though runs at 5Hz, has only 45 hr power reserve compared to 72 hr for the modern 4Hz ones, and, the later has higher precision. Noticeably, the HPP calibers hands, though, still long, is a pip shorter than the previous. There's always compensation. That's why watch collectors love to look at hands. Interesting, neither patek or Lange has a higher precision manual caliber than the 9S63 and 9s64. Then, there's the 9R31 and the Phillipe Dufour's 9R02. PD said that the world has too many machine made watches. He likes GS, and, that's why he chose to work with them.

  • @philbass5875
    @philbass5875 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 9F movement with the backlash auto adjust ALWAYS hits the markers. A throw away line like 'something that GS doesn't always gets right', is incorrect and just lowers your credibility.

    • @watchsymposium
      @watchsymposium  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's just a fact that they don't always get it right. I've seen more than a few quartz GS that didn't hit the markers. Are you saying that they all do, or that they all should?

    • @derekshearer9049
      @derekshearer9049 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bryan Davis. There is only one problem. I don't like quartz watches. I never had one that lasted more than 6 months. Besides there are batteries in too much stuff. My watches are purely mechanical. I own a mechanical Steinhart l use frequently with hammer drills and air guns. Never more than plus 2 secs a day. Tough enough for me. My Tudor runs about plus 3 secs a month. Accurate enough for me. If you like quartz, that's terrific. Not for me however.

    • @derekshearer9049
      @derekshearer9049 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bryan Davis. I also love Orient and Vostok. Not about the money. Don't much care about accuracy. For me the fun is interacting with my timepieces. Adjusting them, settings them. No fun with a quartz you set once a year. How boring.
