    I have a 1977 King Quartz. (In early 70s Seiko rebranded Grand Seiko and King Seiko to Grand Quartz and King Quartz as Quartz was so far superior to mechanical movements.) The movement keeps perfect time over the several years that I've owned it. It was rated at +/- 10 seconds per month from factory, but much better than that. 45 years old, no issues.

      I bought the Silver dial version for my daughter and it is a stunner also. The dial takes on the colour of its surroundings. I am so impressed with GS quartz timepieces that I have just ordered the new limited edition SBGP017. 'Sea of Clouds' blue dial with the 9F85 movement. Interestingly, it also has a display case back. Expensive but a beautiful looking, and , expectedly, performing piece. I am hoping that this may be the start of GS producing high quality quartz watches with some of their gorgeous textured dials.

      Lots of other watches are thermocompensated including watches from omega, citizen and eta based watches.
      Citizen make a movement that is accurate to 1 sec a year and you can get an eta based chronograph with thermocompensation and a stated 10s a year accuracy which has 27 jewels for hundreds of dollars not thousands.

      @@murph8411 What you say is true however, in my opinion, there is more to buying a watch than accuracy. How it looks, the quality of the manufacturing and components, how it feels on the wrist and most importantly, how I feel when I am wearing it. The watches I buy and wear say 'buy me' when I see them, as in this case. Most pieces do nothing for me. At the end of the day you buy what you like, not what others think you should buy. There is no wrong or right, except for paying 8 X retail for a Rolex OP, that is just wrong!

    For those who do not want to worry about a battery and jumping seconds hand, there is the Spring Drive with 9R65 movements with an automatic rotor with sweeping seconds hand and the prices of GS models with these inside are rising. Seiko as a brand are a separate entity. Grand Seiko is in a stratosphere of their own. It took me quite some time to really get to know what they are all about and glad I did.

That said, regarding this watch featured I love the idea of having a watch to hand that will always be running and that will be so accurate that it would only need adjusting when you travel to a different time zone or for daylight saving time purposes. The accuracy of this thing is mind blowing.

    So many things to say about this video. Firstly - thank you; your love of watches in general and appreciation of this piece in particular makes the factual content very easy to watch. If you did a 45 minute video on this watch, maybe including some q/a with some of the other people you mentioned, I would watch it! 😁
    Secondly - ah Seiko.... All the content about the movement and the indices (they're diffraction gratings) is why I fell in love with Seiko; all the comments on the bracelet on a watch costing $2k are why I fell out of love with Seiko (I'm now down to 2 from 'embarrassing' - both solar quartz).
    Thirdly - quartz movements - keep going. The fact (and it is a fact) is that all quartz movements are far, far more complex than the lossy 400 year old technology on which mechanical watch movements are based. We tend to forget that when the Astron was released in 1969 it cost the inflation-adjusted equivalent of about $12k. Quartz movements are not inherently cheap; they're cheap now as a result of the microprocessor and printed circuit manufacturing revolution - itself a miracle of modern science and mass manufacturing technology that we take for granted. Probably the best video I've seen on quartz movements is on Steve Mould's channel - but even he glosses over the small matter of analog to digital conversion, miniaturised in a wristwatch in 1969. For anyone reading this who may be sceptical, I honestly believe that once you understand what's going on inside a quartz movement, your appreciation of them, and what Seiko actually achieved back in 1969, will grow exponentially.

      Great comment. There is a lot of snobbery in the watch community about quartz movements. Yes, they are now two-a-penny but like you said it’s amazing technology and this movement featured is very high tech and probably had a lot of R&D money put into it. Also people forget that GS have a great deal of hand finishing put into their watches. People are happy to praise the so called ‘value’ of a £2K Swiss watch like an Oris with a £120 Sellita automatic movement inside it but fail to realise just what good value a similarly priced but FAR better finished GS is.

    • @laurencehogg6010
      @laurencehogg6010 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jacc88888 I did wonder what feedback the comment might get, so I thank you for yours. Just in case I haven't poked this wasps nest enough though 🙂: the snobbery is a shame because those with it are missing out. Small prejudices are easy to change though with a bit of knowledge, which is why the lack of info on Seiko's website is so bizarre.
      Whenever I engage with or read anything about quartz snobbery, I'm always reminded of the 'non-watch' person conversation every enthusiast has had - that one where you start gushing to a normal person about the expensive Swiss thing on your wrist, trying to get them interested. At some point they ask the obvious question about accuracy and you have to admit your $4k automatic heritage Swiss timepiece is less accurate over time than a $20 quartz watch, and you can see them slowly reaching for their phone to call the local asylum and have you committed. Happy days...🤣

    As an electric wheelchair user who never swing my arms I really can't use watches with automatic movements unless they are hand-windable, but that gets irritating over time. That's why quartz movements are so nice to me. Many fine timepieces are only offered with automatic movements, so it's so amazing that Grand Seiko offers quartz watches that look this good. Fantastic video, Gary - thank you for making this. I was very close to buying this when we swapped messages on IG about the watch being discontinued, so I decided to get it. During my final research I discovered the GS SBGT235, which is a JDM model and exactly the same as the SBGX263, but with an English / Kanji day complication and a dressier bracelet with polished links. The day/date means there’s less empty space on the dial (something that concerned me about the SBGX263) and as I wanted a dressier piece the bracelet upgrade suited me. I received the watch on Monday and I absolutely love it. The size, fit and finish are magnificent. Wear yours in good health, Gary - looks great on your wrist.

    As advanced as the movement is, I'd prefer the same watch with a £19 meca-quartz movement giving the appearance of a sweeping hand, I suppose Seiko don't want to potentially damage the sales of the mechanical watches.
    A good looking (if very plain) well made watch, no doubt - but every time I'd look at it, I would see a £2000 quartz watch.
    Thanks for sharing Gary.

    I just purchased the more hard to obtain and desirable 40mm version of this watch. Wanted a luxury quartz and this seemed to be the ticket. Went champagne for something different. Champagne dials are one of the hardest and longest time to make according to seiko supposedly. 40mm moves the bracelet up to 20mm. £1200 new in box from Chrono24 in Japan. Can’t beat that for the money…

    There are some absolutely beautiful Grand Seiko’s available, but…every time I look at the prices I think ‘If I’m going to spend that, why wouldn’t I go with another brand?’. I am coming around and getting closer and closer to grabbing one but that idea is still present.

    Unfortunate that the second hand doesn't land centered on the indices. A truly impressive movement. Seiko really does know how to make nice hands.

    • @rajgill7576
      @rajgill7576 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It must be a camera angle thing. It's one of the selling points that GS boutiques have told me before lol. My '89 GS quartz lands bang on the indices and that soldiers been ticking for 30+ years

    • @RavenWindrunner

    Great looking watch! If Seiko made an affordable version of this with the mecaquartz movement I'd be all over it. As nice as the GS is, it still looks like it ticks once a second, and that would thoroughly piss me off after spending 2 bags

    • @wbarns15
