    Thanks Rob! I rebuilt a pair of strombergs for my FJ about 6 months before you posted this video. As you mentioned there was nothing available on you tube at the time so thanks for posting this to help everyone in the future. I've had some doubts about my float level and bowl vents since then and I reckon I know how to fix those issues now so thanks again.

    Rob...I am now hooked on your videos...they have a real fascination factor for me. I also love the doggy cameos.
    A few years ago I fantasised about doing up an old FJ, putting in a disk brakes, air con, a black Holden six EFI motor from the VK and also fitting the ABS module from a Commodore. Then I would do up the interior, fit sound proof matting under the bonnet and inside the doors. Always a pipe dream of mine however the closure of Holden meant that early Holdens skyrocketted in price and that was it. At my age now I think it will always be a pipe dream. A mate of mine DID bring his dream to life. He built an HQ Monaro from an old body shell, did up the interior, fitted WB aircon and put the VS Holden/Ponitac supercharged six (plus four speed auto) under the bonnet. He also used the VS ABS module. That car is just beautiful! Quiet at idle but nice burble under load, quick as a cut snake and it has all mod cons, even intermittent wipers! Just goes to show what having a good income, persistence and imagination can do. I have the imagination but not the income! ;)

      @robsshed  ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This vid is bloody brilliant! Thanks so much Rob. Had more trouble than a canary cage full of cats with one of these fitted on an SV1 Valiant, presumably retrofitted from a VE or VF Valiant. Carby model is 4-3503.9.15 with a Needle & seet side marking of 2376108 1 7/32. Base appears to be marked BXUV-3. I will clarify the base numbers after full dismantle. I'm assuming the 1 7/32 is the bore diam being larger to suit the 225 slant 6 airflow. I'd love to find more in the way of specs and detail on it.
    Again, many thanks for your effort.

    Hi All,
    I just watched your video right through and it is great as I have one of those Strombergs on my 179. I've had an interim issue where occasionally had the float bowl run dry and so the engine stops. Worked my way up and replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, and float needle. Had a bit more of a play today and with the top of the carby off it runs fine, idles, etc. However, when I screw the top down, the float bowl runs dry? The gasket between the two is pretty ordinary and I've ordered a replacement but I was wondering if I could pick your brains to see what else it could be. Cheers Jason

    Hi Rob. This really helped me understand the ins and outs of these carbs. I have a Lj Torana 173 engine and it’s running really rich. Would that idle mixture screw help me lean it or do I have to play around with jets. Cheers David.

    • @robsshed
      @robsshed  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Keeping it simple, the idle screw only affects the idle mixture, if you are rich at cruising speeds, the jet and float level will control the mixture in that range.
      Check to make sure that you have the correct carburettor for your engine as a starting point, and check that the power valve is working correctly.
      A leaking power valve will give you a rich mixture at all speeds. A float level too high is a common cause of over rich mixture. An adjustable main jet will simplify jet adjustments.
      Hope this helps. Cheers Rob.

    Fantastic Rob. Absolutely loving your videos. I have an old grey motor I set up to run twins a number years ago. Took a bit to match the carbies. Had to put venturi restrictors in to increase the pressure gradient. Once I had that sorted, I was able to reduce the jet size. Purrs like a kitten and solid fuel economy. The way you pulled that carby down, I recon you could do it blind folded. I have used a cheap ultrasonic cleaner with great success in cleaning the carby externally and internally. Are you up to demonstrating a back yard wheel alignment for toe in and if possible camber / caster on the FJ? Thanks again for paying it forward!!!

    • @robsshed
      @robsshed  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      G,day mate, I meant to mention venturi restrictors in the video, but forgot. I have a few kicking around somewhere, but could not find them before we recorded the clip. We will look at wheel alignments in the future. When I modified the FJ front end, I had it wheel aligned. Apart from a minor toe adjustment it was perfect as I set it at home. That was about 20 years ago, and the last wheel alignment I paid someone to do. I have since modified many suspensions, and altered cars from manufactures specs to improve handling and tyre life. Stay tuned fo more. Thanks for watching. Cheers Rob.

      @@robsshed can't wait for your home wheel alignment.
      If there is one thing I hate and that's taking my old cars somewhere to get something done and wheel align is one.
      An example was to get my HK prem wagon on special interest reg it had to be inspected, take it to get looked at comes back with dented sills, and the sills were perfect they lifted the old girl under the sills with no cut outs in the blocks for a start and DONT lift them there anyway, it's like you have to go and hold their hand to get anything done.
      So this wheel alignment segment will save me some severe frustration and like you say I have had to alter anyway to get better tyre wear.
      When will you be doing this?

    • @garygardner6536
      @garygardner6536 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I put a ww stromberg ona 186 straight of a 253 and the jetting was perfect and it went like a bat out of hell.

    • @robsshed
      @robsshed  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes Mate, I have done that many times. I currently own a factory 186s HR with the ww stromberg on it. If you can find one a 186s ww is a better choice than a 253 carb. The 253 has smaller jets and different metering tubes. Off idle performance is better with the 186s carby and unless you over richen the mixture by raising the float level the 253 one will lean out over 4500rpm. It all comes back the the volume of air flowing through the venturi for any given engine speed. Overhaul is very similar, but these carbs tend to wear the throttle shafts so keep that in mind if looking for a carby. 253 have different base plates to 186s with different bleed holes for the intermediate circuits. I run a 253 jet on the inside barrel, and this really helps with evening out the mixture distribution over the six cylinders. Cheers Rob.

      G,day mate. A better swap for the FJ front end is FC stubs. These will interchange with the FJ kingpin support. Same brake backing plate flange as EH. Holden front bearings are the same from 48 thru early FE. The later FE thru VN Commodore are all the same. All hubs and rotors interchange from there. The only difference is the hub seal, but if you use the one from hub or rotor you are using it all works. In the past hot rodders would fit FB through HD kingpin supports, and this works but you can never get a truely correct wheel alignment. I do need to fix my FJ so yes we can record that and post it to youtube. Cheers Rob.

    Hi Rob, great video. About the change to unleaded petrol. Did you have to do the valve seats and valves, or do you use a lead replacement in the fuel? Just asking because you see it a lot on car shows with older cars.

    • @robsshed
      @robsshed  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      G,day mate, I don't run any fuel or upper cylinder additives in my engines. In the past we did the whole valve seat insert thing, but now I just run them just as they were built. I have leaded petrol engines on ulp that have done 10s to 100s of thousands of kilometers with no valve issues. I will expand on this in a future video. Strangely enough I have done more than a few top overhauls on customer engines running upper cylinder treatments, because the additive has built up on the backs of the valves and stuck them open. Cheers Rob.

    I have a holden engine in my work land rover actually 2 rovers both with stromberg cars, they both flood on steep grades uphill,so thought the other day to lower fuel bowl, on assy the wire clip for the float pin flew out and away I thought this is it I won't find that as was outside on blue metal. Someone was on my side I found it- would have to be big multiples to one.
    I am very gracious, cause I don't think I had another.

    • @robsshed
      @robsshed  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good story, how did it preform with the float level lower? When you look at the design of the carburettor you will encounter flooding problems when they are put on a steep incline. Sounds like you are using the old Landy for what it was designed for. Good stuff. Cheers Rob.

    • @garygardner6536

      Yes they get used to their full potential.
      When I got the first one thought they were indestructible until I broke 3 out of 4 axles.
      Yes much better on the Holden engine, will start on a steep incline now and climb well, next the 2.25 rover engine.
      Thanks for the reply.

      G'day mate. I am, of course, the long suffering wife of an old car guy. Lol.
      Life's journey with Rob at my side has never been dull or boring! There's always a car, or part that he'd like to bring home, or fix up like new.
      Together we have raised three amazing offspring, and now have two little sprogglets for grandchildren. Early signs show a preference for toys with wheels!
      We have many stories, ( like the time my Chrysler Voyager was towed home by the FJ Holden, and the time we did a lightning trip to South Australia and back with a two month old baby in the Falcon station wagon) but Rob is a born storyteller, so I always let him tell them.
      Thanks for supporting our channel.
      Cheers
