This video was very informative. You have a new subscriber. My 2005 Trek Liquid frame that’s brand new in box will live with all up to date spec components. The straight head tube is the component that stopped the build a few years back. My Chris King headset that has 0 use will have to be removed and that hurts but I would rather run a tapered fork. 2019 fork on a 2005 frame......with a brand new Chris King headset crying in the corner.

So I have the same dilema. My bike has a 1-1/8" steer tube and the new fork I have is a 40 mm tapered tube. The lower tube is what measures the 40mm. My inside diameter of my bike is 38mm. Which would be the correct adapter to get?

A lot of folk seem to be getting confused ..this works only if you have a 44mm straight headtube and not on the slimmer 34mm version that came on a lot of older bikes and many rigid steel bikes like many surlys.

Hello thank you for watching... I installed a rockshox reba with a 100mm. On your case XL pitch with 140 travel it is do-able but safer if its on a 120mm travel. Pitch is relatively a cross country type MTB 👌

I was curious, since this adds about 10mm to the front end height, have you noticed any real changes in the way the bike handles due to this? I agree with you Travis . The bike what they called mullet (upgrade). Handling and geometry wise it becomes more agile on tight corners which is Good though. And you are right more and more options on headset conversions are coming out. And Yes I love the Wolftooth brand . .. and I think I will continue doing mullet upgrade if needed

Not sure if I'll get a response but I've been looking to do this upgrade for a while now. The headtube itself is 44mm but there is an adaptor making it smaller to around 30mm. Having a struggle getting it out, any suggestions?

I bought a cane creek lower cup extender and it didn’t work because the cup’s depth didn’t allow it to fit completely because of the way my head tube was machined. The wolftooth cup seems to be a bit shallower than the cane creek cup... so you think it would work on my 2020 Marin bobcat trail?
Bored Mechanic thanks! I ordered the Hope lower cup. I have read that it fits tubes that aren’t bored as deep as the cane creek cup. I’d that doesn’t work I suppose I’ll try a wolftooth cup. I wish companies would indicate compatibility with how frames are machined inside the headset (shallow or deep bore).
EC44/40. None of my 7 local bike shops had these in stock but I was able to find a few options made by Hope and Ritchey and ZTTO on eBay and Aliexpress.
have a 2021 Marlin 5 and plan on dropping the suntour fork for a Rock shox Recon Rl with a tapered tube and a 15/100 through axle. Looks like he is using a wolf tooth lower I also think Hope and Cane Creek make a EC 40/44 conversion. I haven't verified 100% yet but think its a 44mm tube. This will not work for the older Specialized bikes using the 1-1/8" upper and lower campy style integrated cartridge bearings. The reason for this is that Wolftooth, Cane Creek and others that develop these conversion headsets require that the internal diameter of lower head tube to have 34mm or 44mm or 49mm. The 2011 Specialized bikes with this campy integrated style head tube doesn't allow for this at all, sadly. The internal diameter of a lower head tube is 30.5mm. Really sucks!

What about bikes that don't have the bigger diameter head tube. I have a 11 yr old bike I want to put a new fork on but don't have the tapered head tube.
I'm not so sure with the size availability on adapters however if the said frame's head tube is meant for classic size steerer (really small ones) then we really can't put some adapters as a solution. So sorry my friend 🙏🚲🇨🇦.. Thank you for watching ✌

Hello and thank you for watching and supporting the channel... If it's " integrated ".. then for sure it is part of the frame (built-in).. just measure the integrated lower headset with a caliper measuring tool .. if you are planning to convert it to fit into a tapered fork.

Yours is a different case but for sure there is the right lower cups converter headset available for that number... the question now is " how to get or buy them ?".

This will not work for the older Specialized bikes using the 1-1/8" upper and lower campy style integrated cartridge bearings. The reason for this is that Wolftooth, Cane Creek and others that develop these conversion headsets require that the internal diameter of lower head tube to have 34mm or 44mm or 49mm. The 2011 Specialized bikes with this campy integrated style head tube doesn't allow for this at all, sadly. The internal diameter of a lower head tube is 30.5mm. Really sucks!

Usually they have them in stock but right now EC44/40 is sold out ...anyhow this is the link just check it over from time to time for updates for stocks.

Yes it will work : Lower Cup is EC40/44 by Wolftooth... you can still use the Current Uppers. Just change the lowers 👍🚲🇨🇦

@Bored Mechanic HI again... your info was truly great. I may have shave 2mm on the bottom cup so the cup can ride snug on the headset, I was able to do it. Thank you so much for the info on bottom cup EC44/40 it worked for Talon 2. I know have more options in forks

What about bikes that don't have the bigger diameter head tube. I have a 11 yr old bike I want to put a new fork on but don't have the tapered head tube.
I'm not so sure with the size availability on adapters however if the said frame's head tube is meant for classic size steerer (really small ones) then we really can't put some adapters as a solution.

If it's " integrated ".. then for sure it is part of the frame (built-in).. just measure the integrated lower headset with a caliper measuring tool .. if you are planning to convert it to fit into a tapered fork.
@@boredmechanic2019 My headset is zs44 standard, Fsa orbit Z 36x45, ACB 873 #, outer width of headset cup is 44mm, outer width of steer tube is 50mm, inner width for bearing bearings 41mm, The hole in headset cup to steer pipe is 31.98mm, I don't have possibility of sending photos because I would send you my steer tube, in the bike catalog I see that the headset is Fsa orbit z9 integrated, I'm afraid that it will be as you say, the headset is part of the frame, but the headset cup is not completely hidden in the frame, the 2mm edge goes out When I asked in the workshop about the possibility of removing the headset cup, they said that there is no problem, I would love to do it because I need a 15/100 axle fork, unfortunately I can't find one with 1 1/8 inch, they are all tapered, really there is no possibility?

Hello @@lukasbad5646 I'm so sorry for the late reply. I used the " Wolftooth EC44/40 " but the bike I used in this video is not integrated headtube. Yours is a different case but for sure there is the right lower cups converter headset available for that number... the question now is " how to get or buy them ?".
@@boredmechanic2019 I will not have a problem with buying the right adapter, they are available in Poland without any problem, I have a problem with determining whether my headset cup can be removed, they look like aluminum cup pressed in to the frame, or the headset cup can be mounted on glue (epoxy or something) , how can I be sure I can remove the headset cup, is there any way for me to send photos to you?
