  • Bike headsets come in a variety of options, sealed bearings, unsealed bearings (loose balls) threaded, and non threaded. 1 inch vs 1 1/8" and standard cups (non integrated), integrated, and lastly semi integrated.
    Phu Vu from EPIC BMX ( / _epicbmx ) gives us the run down and installation guide for these choices!

    Great video, very good explanation. I am a bike mechanic and tour guide in a 5 star hotel in southern Greece, a couple of days before I had to service my full suspension mtb and I decided that tapered headset is the go for me and I was looking for a video explaining some things so is sure about my thinking. Bravo guys

    There is a tool to remove that crown race properly but is freaking expensive for the need nowadays.
    I usually keep a little tin on the side with old Stanley knives blades or old razer blades and you can fit one on in between the crown and where it sits, with little knocks going around.
    At least in setups that are more precious aesthetics.

    Sealed isn't better for headsets because the presure is on the sides of the bearings. Sealed bearing are not designed to take pressure sideways, only up or down on its race. Wheels and bottom brackets where the bearings are vertical are good spots for sealed bearings. And those weren't loose ball bearings, they were caged bearings. I once bought a bike that turned fine, felt sturdy and it didn't have any bearings. It had two cone washers like the ones he hit. The previous owner lost the bearings and didn't put them back. That's where I learned that headsets don't need good bearings they just need lubrication. So I guess anything will do 🤷‍♂️

      I was also thinking this. Sealed bearings are radial only as the inner race is parallel to the outer race race forming perfect concentric rings. Caged bearings have 3D pressure support because the inner race is both under neath and to the side of the caged bearings(similarly the outer race is both above and to the side of the caged bearing). Headset bearings need to support both swivel(radial) pressure and the pressure from the compression bolt(vertical pressure when in use). Therefore theoretically the older caged bearings should be more suitable for use in headsets. I think that's why they have the 45/45 (degrees) specification for headset bearings.

    Wish where I live would have a shop like you guys. Our shops are dull, very limited inventory,sales people look at you like you're bothering them trying to buy something and they are completely clueless about bikes and parts. Feels like you're in Walmart. 🤣

    my original top cap from a CK complete broke after about 2 years of riding, replaced it w an S&M one and it fits fine but the bars will often come out of line with the front wheel. seems to never really get tight enough compression. any help on this?

    • @adhaetjamn
      @adhaetjamn ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm an amateur but I'll take a crack at your question. You should not rely on the top cap to keep your bars aligned with the fork. The top cap keeps the bearings in full contact with the frame and fork. So, make sure the bolts that clamp the stem to the fork are tight. These are what keeps the front end lined up!
