I have a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado V6 4.3 and I was told that my torque converter was going out I was told to get a heavy duty torque converter what do you recommend. And how can I tell if my torque converter is giving out I took it to 4 different places and two said I need to replace the transmission another place said it was the torque converter and another place said it's a solid transmission all I need was to do a filter change and fuilds.

    • @bruceeckel7501
      @bruceeckel7501 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

How many miles on it? The torque converters are known to go out after about 75,000-85,000 miles, some are lucky and they go 150,000+ with no issues. But if you have that many miles on it, and you have the means to replace it, I would. Cause if the torque converter goes, you’ll end up having to replace the whole transmission.

I have a 2017 Yukon with 41000 miles, and I am having the torque converter changed out and replaced with a billet converter and some other modifications recommended by the very trusted and knowledgeable transmission shop owner. While doing the converter swap, he is going to install the Superior STL010, 6L80E / 6L90E Sure Cool Thermal Bypass Kit. All this work being done is proactive on my part to make sure my 6L80E transmission lasts the life of the Yukon. My plan from now on is to do a pan drop and replace trans fluid and filter every 35000 miles. I did a pan drop and filter change on this vehicle at the 39000-mile mark and the fluid was in excellent condition. A full rebuild is not cheap and in some cases a defective factory torque converter does so much damage the transmission is no longer reuseable, and a new or remanufactured transmission is required. I don't want to go down that very expensive road in the future so that is the reason why I am having the billet converter installed and the other recommended modifications done now. The factory thermostat runs to hot, and it is advisable like this video shows to replace with a lower aftermarket thermostat. Thanks for the informative video.

A complete bypass is a bad idea IMHO as the TBP bring the trans temp up quickly for better operation and regulates it at a lower temp ... Installing the GMC upgrade mod TBP will keep the temps at 150*s city to 160*s/70*s Hwy ...On hot summer days in stopped traffic its gone up to 180*s+ but comes right down when moving again ... Just remember that ATF best operating temp is 175* ... :)

so let me respond to the part about subzero weather in the video… I have this installed in my truck 2014.. no issues no complaints. It works fine. if it’s 30 or 40° out and I’m cruising on the highway I might hit 150 but usually in the 140s… OK probably fine with that.. as I go into Northern Maine, if it’s -10 or even zero outside my temperature runs about 100 to 115° degrees. The outside temperature seems to dictate a lot of how the surecool works in my truck. if I travel at lower speeds, it warms up a bit if I go faster it cools down. but outside Temperature plays a huge part.
It’s a great product it does what it says for the most part. I’m just not sure if I like my transmission running at 100° when it’s subzero sometimes it doesn’t even hit 90 if it’s below zero. Unless somebody can tell me that it doesn’t matter.

Well I had bought a 2016 suburban with 84000 miles from a dealer had the transmission fluid and filter changed immediately. I had seen the transmission issues being posted. I do drive quite a bit of 3-6 hr trips in general and this new truck I noticed the transmission temp go to 194 in 30 degrees temperature and seen your video and immediately did the switch and temps dropped while on hwy to 120.
But oddly enough today I did a 5 hr ride on pkwy and had got stuck in traffic halfway through and sat in car for 39 minutes and tranny temp went right up to 182 before traffic eased up and got to highway speeds.
Now todays temps were 50 when driving
This does worry me when temps get higher and I do drive this
    Ever. With new stat

Hey, I just installed this on my 2019 suburban. Had it installed for about 3 days now. The first day was great, temps dropped down to 150-160ish and about 140 on the freeway. But yesterday I noticed it was getting back up to 190 on the street and about 165 on the freeway. Do you think that’s normal this this part installed or should it be way lower?

Transmission failure starts to happen at around 240 degrees F so you have to realize that your cooler is running through your engine coolant which should be around 210 degrees so if your transmission doesnt go above the 210 for long periods of time then you should be just fine the thermostat that you deleted holds the transmission at 195 degrees and never allows it to cool down and that destroys your fluid

I have a 20017 Silverado z71 crew cab and I just installed a week ago a new rebuild transmission 6L80 with a lot of billet parts and billet converter all the updates from Sonnax. And still I had to take it back and replace the new defective oil pump it was making loud noises in the 4-5-6 gears and overheating up to 210+. I just got it back noise is gone thats good news but the bad still overheating i have the same problem keeps going up to 214 hot and I’m not even pulling anything yet. and it will probably go higher but i don’t let it. I have to stop and pull over let it cool down before driving it again. I just order the mishimoto trans coolant kit. I have a bypass already installed and still gets hot. So I’m gonna install it this weekend we’ll see if it helps. I’ll update once is completed and tested.

Thanks, for the video. The GM design has the exhaust right up against the trans pan, this is a poor design. I’ve had one of these kits (not this particular one) put in and still get up to 250 degrees when pushing the truck up elevation. I would love to get this fix for good…

I was always at 194 and last sunday it blew up. I rebuilt the transmission and also installed a thermostat kit and finished last night. My temp never got above 133 coming home last night. Its like 40 degrees outside so I expect it will eventually get hotter as ambient temps rise.

No, it's not better. Same part will most likely do the same thing. The delete doesn't hurt anything. It's exactly how transmissions have been run for decades, with zero issues.

If you live in a heavy salt state like I do in NY. It can be VERY hard to get the clip out. Buy some CLR and let it sit on top of the housing after you take it off. It worked AMAZING for me.

This video while factually true is misleading.
    1) The trans thermostat bypass valve (TBV) purpose is to reach optimum operating temperature quickly in all seasons, increasing load handling and fuel economy.
    2) The stock GM TBV on the 6L80E used to open at 194°F(90°C) but they released a TSB. Talk to your dealership and they will replace it with a 154°F(70°C) one for free.
    3) Closing the bypass doesn’t increase the efficiency of your trans cooler, meaning if you hit 220°F in town, you will still hit 220°F in town it just takes more time to get there.
    4) The trans cooler doesn’t go through the radiator. If you look at your lines you will realize it has a separate cooler as part of the AC condenser in front of the radiator.
    5) If you live in a cold climate, expect to lose slight MPG with the bypass delete mod because the trans will take a long time to reach operating temperature.
    6) I installed the Shift Technology STL010 kit and drove up into the colorado mountains and it still hit 250°F before I let it cool off. Without it, it would have hit the same temperature only quicker. So, the point here is that sometimes you need a bigger cooler, and with a bigger cooler you probably want a thermostat! Because closing the bypass would make it even harder to reach operational temperature.
    7) If you only do highway or short trips and don’t tow and don’t off-road then a closed bypass mod will give you lower temps because the rate of temperature rise is lower, and it removes the temperature floor of the system.
Anyways, so that’s what I’m doing, ordered a bigger cooler, and will put the 70°F TBV back in. I’ll have a quick warm up and a much shallower angle of temperature rise vs load.

GM indicates ideal temp is 180-200f. Below 170 is bad, you want it to get to operating temp as quickly as possible. Honestly I do not understand this mod and will not do it u less I see temps creep above 200 on a regular basis. Towing 6k boat I’ve never seen my trans temps go over 200, stock 2015 Yukon XL 5.3.
