I travel to Africa often, and luggage often goes on a roof rack. I must have waterproof! (After disasters!)… for example wondering about July trunk? I know Pelican is waterproof but it’s also missing other features. I hope you are game for this idea, thank you!! 😊

I wish they’d kept the exterior pocket on the trolley pass-through sleeve. The zipper on the bottom of the sleeve is great if you’re NOT flying, but if you are, you’ve lost that pocket.
I agree. I also wish they left the front pocket as is because once I (over) pack as I tend to, it's going to be harder to see what's there or get to it. I ordered the 3rd version off Amazon instead. I can supply my own tech bag and liquids bag

I purchased this version right after it came out a few weeks ago. I love it! I packed for a 3 day weekend trip in only this bag. My husband liked it so much he had me order him one. I love the water bottle pocket, the long pocket with 2 ways to access it & the 2 pouches they include. No regrets on this purchase at all!

Nice bag! I like the organization. Luggage trolley sleeve is always the first feature I look for. I like that it also has a laptop sleeve in the middle, so it's padded from either side. 🌺Heidi

I’ve had a Bento Bag since v1 came out on kickstarter years ago. The phone pocket is my fave new feature. The zipper on the bottom of the trolley sleeve is from the original bag, and I didn’t like it. I’d use it as a pocket and forget stuff was in there when I needed to use it for a trolley sleeve and all the stuff would come out of the pocket. The v3 seems a bit bigger than v4. The water bottle pocket needs to be taller or have a little strap to keep our big water bottles from falling out. Love the leather and new handles on v4, and the new mesh. I’d miss the old front admin pocket.
I’m not too familiar with any of the earlier versions. I’m very careful with my trolley sleeve zippers, as my BÉIS one being open made me lose my phone once!
Having packed both of them recently within a week or so, and see them side by side, I can say they are the same size for sure. I do love the phone pocket. My passport is in there currently as I’m at the airport now!

Nice review, Lauren! Just received my v4 after exchanging my v3 (super kind and responsive team at Nomad Lane!). I'm so glad to have the extra toiletry and electronic bags. Favorite features: The back pocket doubling as a trolley sleeve and the mobile pocket. I love it when bags have zippers that can be tucked out of sight, and the v4 does that well too. I'm excited to hear how well the bento bag functions for you during your next trip!

I think I actually talked about that in my original video of the version 3, if I’m remembering correctly. But most of the time, if it didn’t fit in one, people have said they have gotten away with it. On a domestic flight, it should be fine. International, I wouldn’t risk, personally

The north south is a small tote bag, more like a big purse. This is more like a duffel with organization :)

(I am trying really hard not to have FOMO about the V4.😂) I am interested in getting the accessory bags to go with the older version, but I am wondering what your thoughts are on them. Are they worth the price? Can you fit as many liquids as you would in a quart bag? I am thinking it would be nice to have something that fits just right in those pockets. Thank you!
They are nice, but you can definitely use different bags if you want to. I can fit more liquids in my baggie than in the bag it comes with.

I like mesh that feels silky. Opening from the top to access the inside pockets is great. Don’t like bento bag that doesn’t allow you to access from the top because have to have space to open the bento. The pocket for water bottle is pretty shallow though.

I don’t think it’s “collapsible” really. It feels just as sturdy as the v3, just a different material. I believe the weights are the same

I like the fact that you can access the laptop from the top (as well as the inside). Great feature. 2nd favorite would be the water bottle pocket. That's a complaint I have about my Monos Metro backpack. I don't like the interior pocket. It takes up too much space and just isn't that convenient. I am not a fan of the amount of branding, but it wouldn't prevent me from buying it. The only thing really holding me back is that I am unlikely to be able to fit a camera bag in either half of the bag. While the division may be useful for organization, the lack of "large" side creates a problem for anything with more depth. Even my slimmest (a digital holder)is 5.5" deep. I e-mailed Nomad Lane, and they said their biggest pocket is 4x16x8 inches. The 4" is the rate limiting factor. I am happy to report that their customer service was really responsive/helpful.
I’m currently traveling with mine now, and I have my camera, go pro, microphones, electronics bag, 2 books, 2 tripods, and a ton of snacks on each side. Plus my laptop and my computer accessories!

@@lisamintzer4516 I have everything in there Tetris style. Everything is in a case (go pro, mic, etc) except my actual camera because it’s in a spot that It doesn’t need to be, and I constantly pull it out.

Hey! Took me awhile to check out your review on the V4. Really nice review. I’m not sure I’m seeing a lot of upgrades to be honest when comparing the V3 to the V4. Some features have moved around and in someways I’m seeing what I would call downgrades. I haven’t watched the video where you travel with it so it’s possible to address these things there but can you speak to the pass through zippers scratching your suitcase handles? That would be a huge concern for me. Also did they add more rigidity to the top of the bag to fix the bowing problem they had when it was fully loaded out?
I actually feel like this was a big upgrade on a lot of levels, but it’s all personal preference.
The trolley sleeve was fine with my handle, scratching wasn’t even a concern.
And I’m not sure what you mean by the Bowing out problem. But everything packed really well and the only thing I miss from the 3 was the pocket in the front. I think this pocket looks nicer but isn’t as practical.
I just ordered this bag due to this review. I looked at the Bento bag before but I didn’t like the handles on the v3 plus to me this bag just looks classier. I tried a backpack on a trip to Ireland a couple of years ago and found I had trouble getting it off and on easily which meant lots of bleeding under the skin on my arms due to my age. I have been looking for something to replace it as we have an international flight coming up in June. My only concern is if the airline forces me to check my carryon and I wind up having to actually carry it quite a bit. So once I get it I am going to practice pack it and carry it around the block to see how I do. If I can’t handle it, I will have to look for something wheeled to go under-seat but I can’t imagine that any of them will be as well thought out and sharp as this one.Thanks for another great review!
I hope you enjoy it! But please look into the airlines you will be flying. Most international flights don’t allow personal items that are big at all. Internationally, I almost exclusively use a small backpack or even a purse
Hi Lauren! I love your channel and helpful reviews! I'm looking for a Carry on Personal Bag for overseas travel (I live in Australia) and the Bento 4 looks amazing however the freight to Australia is costly and with the 10% discount, it will be $555 Aud!! That's pricey but I'm willing to do it if the bag lives up to all the accolades! Away won't freight the Everywhere bag to Australia, so my other main option is the July Carry All Weekender, which will be just over half the price of the Nomad Lane Bento V4. I love being organised so I'm trying to choose the best bag. In your opinion should I buy the Bento 4 or the July bag? I'd love your honest opinion! Thanks again for being awesome :)
If you’re insistent on a duffel type bag, the July one might be best for you with what is available to you. It’s very similar to the Away one.
The bento bag is different than both of those, with its organization, but the only thing similar for you is the july carry all weekender, which is too big for a personal item.
I would like to add, these are all fabulous bags, but can all get quite heavy when fully packed. I still personally prefer a small backpack over a duffel, simply so that the weight can be evenly distributed on my body, when having to carry it.

Definitely kind of bummed the new version doesnt have the external portable charger! Obviously also supply chain issues, but thats definitely one of the major pluses of the V3 that I got
I always travel with my portable charger anyway, in the same pocket that it belonged in on the 3, I just charge it inside for a nicer look, and have it in the seat back pocket with me anyway.
Does the outside water bottle holder hold a 24 oz. Bottle ?
It’s mesh and stretchy. I have a small 12 oz in there now, and the video is a 16oz. Not sure about 24

It really depends on what you are going to use it for. The Nomad Lane has a lot of incredible organization and pockets, with one large area for clothing/shoes if you are looking to fill it with those types of items. I personally like the 4 better! I think the material is gorgeous and easier to keep clean! The pocket on the 3 is easier to get into, but has more space on the 4. It’s down gone way down in price too :)
I have the v2 and I looooove the bag. I wish they offered this exact bag in backpack, though, because it is really heavy as an over the shoulder bag. I use it with the trolly sleeve with a carry on, and that works great, but that means I have to bring a carry on. The other thing I really wish was my v2 had a water bottle holder. That has had me thinking about buying a v4 despite the hefty price. However, I think I'm just going to keep my v2. I don't like the changes to the front pocket or the loss of the back pocket. The materials do somehow seem cheaper in the video of the v4 too. Some of the new colors in the v4 are pretty tempting. If I was on the market for a bag like this, I would definitely buy the v4. I love my v2 so much that I'm sure someone would be happy with the v4. I just not sure it's a good upgrade.
I like the pocket on my earlier version better, but the material on the v4 is verrrrrryyyyyyyyy nice.
Has anyone tried this bag on Air France as a personal item? It exceeds the Air France measurements and now I'm nervous.
I want to love this, but I just don’t😢 and the front pocket was great in theory but I felt like the pockets behind it needed to be mostly empty or could not even get my hand in it. Do you have any specific packing cube that you would suggest for this bagI am determined to make it work lol it was too much money to live in my closet. I love the fabric and the leather handles. It really was such a pretty bag and looked very good quality!
It should definitely fit in the bins unless the front pockets are overstuffed with bulky items! The front, I only put small things like a phone or pens. Nothing big or bulky. The side with more packing space should fit a medium size cube in it no problem, of any brand! With room to spare.
@itsthekellys do you like the bento or underseat pro more? I want to have a large underseat personal item (overpacked here😅) that will fit over my carry on. The underseat pro sleeve won’t fit over my Beis handle. I’m trying to determine which carry ins and personal item to keep.
I want Beis with underseat pro but based on above I can only use underseat pro with target open story so trying to see if this bento will fit on Beis. Thank you

The pakt is too big for a personal item. Bento is good for a personal item in the US.
Will this work for underseat on southwest? Worried it is a bit too big based on their (conservative) dimensions
Yes it will because of linear dimensions. It is a tiny bit over for height but under for width.

It really depends on the type of travel. The Nomad lane is fairly large when it comes to a personal item for international travel (they can be pickier)

Requesting a review of the Kennedy Weekender by Oak and Rove! I cant find many videos on it and am unsure if I want the nomad lane bento or that one!
I’ll write it down, but it’s not guaranteed that all companies want to work with us/send us bags.
In my opinion, it has a lot of interesting features, but has more of one main compartment to pack in the typical duffel style, vs the clamshell opening, so it depends on what you want it for :)

I have never used a duffel before but I want to try. Does the duffel ever get too heavy compared to using a backpack?
Duffles weigh about the same as a backpack to begin with, but can hold more stuff. The backpack also is work on your shoulders, so the weight is evenly distributed, vs the duffel is on one shoulder.
So, yes, it will be heavier

@@ItsTheKellys ordered the nomad using your link :) I will fly with allegiant air for a weekend trip. Personal item is free but carry-on cost extra. The nomad bag will fit perfectly as a personal item that can fit an extra outfit and shoes.
I prefer the v3 for the 2/3 differing outside pockets and its look. Also I don’t care for items that shout their brand name.

I did notice that this version seems to have a lot of branding--the name is now on top of the strap and on the bags that fit in the small pockets.
They had logos before as opposed to the full name. I don’t mind it. As a person with a ton of baggage and accessories, I like knowing which ones are meant to go with this bag, including the straps.
The outside pocket on the old version is better. On the newer version you can only use the pocket if you are not flying. The only positive on the newer bag is the outside water bottle pocket which isn’t worth $100! I’m also not a fan of the shiny nylon.

I added the origami tote to my cart and was prompted to check a box and add the backpack for just $99. I checked the box, but the backpack shows up for full price of $198. I was then prompted to add more items to get expedited free shipping. I did and I’m told that I earned free expedited shipping, but… I’m asked to pay for that shipping anyway. Only the slow ground shipping is free.
I read on the top of the website “Free returns!” Then… the help section says returns are not free, they cost $20. what?? Are they counting on your ignorance to fall for this?
Has anyone successfully used this as a personal item for ITA Airways?
I flew them once and they were pretty strict, but that’s when they were new and during the pandemic. I typically don’t bring it internationally
I would have to say I still like V3 better. I feel some of the upgrades are actually downgrades. The water bottle looks like it isn’t very secure and will fall out easily. The shine makes it looks cheap.
It was really nice having the water bottle not take up space inside, so I had more room, and actually, the shine in person makes it look way more luxurious than that 3, in my opinion. I’m traveling with it now. It will go on its third flight today and it’s a big one :)

The material was change was the biggest reason for the return of mine. It's that shiny stuff that doesn't hold up.
Totally unrelated but, help! I rolled my clothes but they're so wrinkly. What did I do wrong? 😅
Maybe before you rolled them you did not lay them flat completely . Also I find different fabrics still wrinkle even with rolling .
What I do before rolling I lay the clothes flat , then fold them a bit then roll them. That way the roll is smaller and prevents wrinkles . Hope this makes sense
I'm very particular about how I roll certain items and certain fabrics. I should do a video on how I roll them one day. My dresses tend to get a little wrinkly after 24 hours of travel, but I hang them up when I get to my hotel, and they are fine after an hour or so.
Looks like I did at least 2 things wrong when rolling my clothes:
1) I packed too early. I finished packing a week before the trip so the clothes were stuffed in the compression bags for a week before I opened them.
2) I did not lay them flat completely. Actually, I was rolling them while holding them in the air, instead of laying them flat on a surface. Lol
I did do a combination of fold and roll as well. I even have some clothes folded only. I'm a mess. I'm still learning 😅
V3 looks a little bit bigger inside or is it just me?

Do you like it? Did you get the nylon or the vegan leather?
I recommend the nylon. It’s easier to pack. The vegan leather is pretty stiff

Actually, I really like the Monos duffle. The feel is really good and I like being able to organize with pouches and packing cubes
So nice, but way too heavy when packed to carry. I always check one bag and carry another. I rarely do carryon as I am gone for a week or more, so I'll have to carry that through the airport and while awaiting the flight. My personal is compact or it will roll. Great idea for others, though!
I use it with a carry on, and give carry on only packing lessons on here for trips 1-3 weeks! I would never carry a duffel solo.

It's a cool bag but way too big for Australasian or Asian airlines. I doubt this would be small enough for some European airlines as well. It may be okay as a carry-on, but not as a personal item.
A resized version for these markets would be very welcome.
Yes but we all know those airlines barely allow a personal item. I change the way I pack when I fly those.
As a wheelchair user I can't use the bags, wish companies would make them so I could.
May I ask what the bags need to do to make it wheelchair accessible?
@ItsTheKellys They need to be able to hang from handlebars in between the wheels of chair. Otherwise I face plant myself beside the bag😁🙄🥴
I’m a weirdo, I hate nylon the texture and feeling on my hands. Even the sound makes my skin crawl; It’s equivalent to nails on a chalkboard. This is such a great bag though

A flaw is no built in handle keeper with a snap to hold the two handles together. Just flopping around all over the place. Pretty expensive little bag for an oversight like this.
I have a similar bag that has that though and with the harder leather handles, it makes it stand straight up when they are connected, which isn’t nice to carry when you are using a shoulder strap, which I use 100% of the time with this bag
I just bought it. I'm returning it. The material is a hard NO. It needs to handle airport abuse. Not be a fancy purse.
It handled 5 airports, 6 hotels, and 1 ferry just perfectly on my trip. Most weekenders are made out of a waterproof nylon like this, just like Away and Monos, etc.
I like version four. However, it looks a little more feminine to me… As a man, I would probably opt for version three. Version four just looks too feminine.
