I’m stunned by the fact that so many don’t have side handles. A side handle is a must for me especially in this category because they need to be lifted into overhead bins.
This was a bummer for me as well. Criteria was lightest spinner luggage (6lbs or less)
You can hold the bag on the bottom when lifting
I bought the July Carry-on Light Expandable in March but in multiple weeks of constant use in Europe I discovered its serious shortcomings and the near-uselessness of July's 100-day return option. Perhaps this mini-review-within-a-comment will be helpful to others considering this bag. Let me start with the least-important drawbacks:
1. When the two zippered compartments are both open they partially block access to one half of the bag or the other. This makes it more complicated to access both halves of the bag when packing or unpacking it. If the zippered covers hung over the outer edges of the bag, as they do in some other bags, it would be easy to pack things in both halves of the luggage at the same time.
2. There is no way to easily have access to any small items that you might use while traveling, like gloves or keys or a passport. Getting access to *anything* in the bag requires you to find a large horizontal space where you can open out both halves of the luggage and completely and unzip the compartment giving access to what you want to pack or unpack. If you're doing this in an airport the only place is probably the ground, which is awkward.
3. There is no side handle - only a single fixed handle on top. It is offset from the centerline, so when the bag is lifted by the handle it is lopsided and does not hang vertically for carrying, making it awkward to handle, for example, when lifting it to put it in an overhead bin. This problem is even worse when the luggage is expanded, which moves the handle even farther from the centerline, making it even more lopsided and more awkward to handle.
4. But for me the main and most-serious problem with this bag, and the one that makes it completely unusable for me, is the shape of the telescoping handle grip. The shape of the grip is curved so that when it's not extended it matches the curve of the bag. While this is stylish, it creates an asymmetric handle with a tilted-oval cross section. This is comfortable to grip but only when you position the bag next to you with the handle on the far side from your body.
When you're rolling the bag, this position requires you to reach across the bag to control it with the handle. Nobody rolls a bag that way. You position the bag with the handle close to your body with the bag to the outside. Unfortunately, in this position, the grip doesn't fit your hand well at all. When you hold it tightly it digs into your palm and across the last joints of your fingers. I've asked people with hands both larger and smaller than mine and they all find it uncomfortable.
This problem isn't apparent rolling the empty bag along a smooth surface when you first receive it, which you can do with a light grip. But when you load it and start to use it for travel it becomes uncomfortable. And in situations where you have to put extra torque on on the handle to control the bag - like when it's heavily loaded and/or fully expanded and/or rolling on carpet or rough pavement - gripping the handle tightly to control the bag becomes an ordeal.
I used this bag as carry-on luggage on eight airplane segments, three train segments, two bus segments and a ferry segment and innumerable city streets, and I could hardly wait to get home and take advantage of the 100-day return option. And that brings me to the worst problem of all ...
5. The 100-day return policy. July says, "If you decide that this is not the product for you, send it back to us within 100 days of placing your order and we’ll reimburse you to the original payment method, as long as the product(s) meet the conditions set out in our return policy."
Unless you click through to see the conditions you might think that you could return the bag if you're dissatisfied with its performance. But no. The return policy says that the bag has to be unused and in its original condition and with all its original packaging, including any dust bags. So if you actually *use* the bag during the 100 days and find it unsatisfactory it's already non-returnable.
But if you can't use the bag in actual travel - or somehow simulate all the various conditions of actual travel without making the bag appear "used" - how can you determine whether this bag, or any July luggage, "is not for you"? Apparently July's policy only covers what can happen to the bag if it sits on a shelf for 100 days. Maybe it develops a smell you don't like? If anything shows up while you're actually putting it to the use it's intended for you're just out of luck. I appealed to July customer service and was told the same thing; they won't accept used bags for return.
So I have an expensive bag that I'll never use again but I'm just out of luck. If I had clicked through to see how worthless the July return policy is I wouldn't have bought the bag. But I didn't click through so I don't have grounds for a complaint.
What I can do though is warn others about the shortcomings of this particular bag and alert them to the fact that the 100-day return policy won't help them if they find any piece of July luggage to be unsatisfactory in actual use.
Thank you for taking the time to write that! I hate these reviews when people have not actually used the bags with full loads on a trip. I appreciate you.
After tons of research, I picked up the Travelpro hard-shell, mostly due to the mesh curtain on both sides. That’s a critical feature, IMO. Years later, I still love the bag.
Travel pro Maxlite rules! I’ve had it for a few years and looks brand new. Super light and great capacity!! Thank you, Nik, for your amazing research in this overlooked luggage category!!
I just returned from 30 days of travel throughout Spain and Portugal. I used the TravelPro Maxlite 5 Slim Carry-On Expandable Softside Spinner, which is almost identical to the compact, but slightly larger. I also had an Osprey Daylite Expandable 26+ that I passthrough the TravelPro handle. I can highly recommend the TravelPro and Osprey. Both for their quality and that combination. They served me well. I only had a couple of minor difficulties. One was slipping the Osprey pack through the TravelPro handle. It wasn't all that easy and if I put my MacBook Air and iPad Pro in the front zipped area of the TravelPro, the bag became a little tippy. I was overpacked for sure, but the combination was easily able to manoeuvre around planes, trains, automobiles, cobblestones, etc.
I've owned two IT luggage suitcases and they have done so well for me. No frills, but really great quality for the price!
I bought the Delsey Dauphine softside in 2006, still using it. From India to USA to EU. Less than 4lbs. No sweat for international budget airlines.
We bought both of the Travel Pro carry-ons last year (I did get the rollaboard soft-sided and my husband the hard sided). We have been very happy with them on multiple international trips.
I have been a big Travelpro fan for years and have both soft and hard cases, but Icelandair international baggage size for carry-on is shockingly small, specifically it can’t be wider than 7.78 inches. A huge thank you to you for introducing me to the July carry-on light, which meets the dimensions for Icelandair. I realize the colors are very limited right now, but for a two week carry-on only trip to France, It will do just fine. Together with my Sherpani travel backpack from REI, I should have all I need. Thanks!
Thank you for this very informational video!!!
These are very helpful video, I ordered my Monos based on your video, yes I used your link making it very easy. Thank you for doing this!😊
Thank you for this review video! It's super helpful!
Thanks very much. Great video! Travel pro is my next bag for sure.
Thank you ! Super video!
We enjoy all of your honest comments!
I got the July carton light expandable! I really like it - so lightweight and easy to maneuver. Plus I got it in a moss green that makes it stand out from all the black bags. I really like that it doesn’t take up too much of my 8kg allowance.
Really helpful and shows currently available products. Thanks.
That was the goal! Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching
Glad to know I made the right choice! love my Travelpro so much I bought one for my daughter too. My only tiny beef is the telescoping handle - I wish it had a third setting.
Really well done!!
Great reviews!
Great video. Thanks!
Very well done! Thank you! 😊
I still have my roller carry-on but recently bought a small backpack with luggage handles and disappearing straps. It's lighter with more capacity and more useful for adventure travel. I will be using this going forward. Wheels and a telescoping handle take up lots of space.
Thank you so much. You have saved me a lot of work. Much appreciated. May you all please take care and stay safe. Louisa. 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️🤩🤩🤩
Great choices. I purchased the Monos, when you recommended it on one of your videos; and I love it. But all of these look like good choices, also. I would love to hear your thoughts on Medium and Large check in luggage. Thank you 😊
I just bought the July carry on lite and checked lite. Customer service was great! They had a 15% off sale, so I took the plunge. Next year I’ll be traveling to New Zealand and Australia and carryon bags are limited to 15 pounds. I purposely chose non expanding so I wouldn’t be tempted to overpack and then have to pay extra fees. I’ll be wearing a ScottE vest on the plane as well. I often travel solo and it will be great to have two bags that are not heavy.
Awesome video with such helpful considerations. Would you consider a review on the Underseat Pro bag and other underseat options? ✅👏🏻
Underseat video is on the list!!!!
We have two of the Maxlite 5 two wheel version which has more capacity and we love them.
Thank you. Extremely helpful. UK
Delsey Clavel Carry on is lightweight (5.2pounds), great telescopic handle, smooth wheels & stunning colours. Also expands to 42L. Near indestructable!
4:47 for the Travelpro Maxlite 5. A variant sometimes shows up on Amazon or TJMax or Marshall’s. I like it, except the lid expands beyond the wheels making it tippy if full. The laptop panel version adds 8 ounces. On my scale the regular mode is 5.5 lbs, ymmv (or your scale may vary).
Thanks so much! Appreciated this video!!! Have you reviewed the Samsonite Essens Carry-On Spinner?
Great video, Nik. Thanks for putting so much effort into this one. I was pleasantly surprised with the overall winner, as I bought a Travel Pro Max 5 last year. But I'm a little bit concerned that my bag is the 21" model, not the compact one. Do you think the 21" still complies as carry-on for international airlines?
Well done!
I don’t know what I think. Weight is important but I MUST have a side handle. I am very short and it is necessary to carry the bag up or down stairs I have to turn it on its side to clear the steps. The July looks great but doesn’t appear to have a side handle. Currently I have a roam. Thanks for the comparisons.
Pamela, I'm with you! The criteria for this video was spinner luggage under 6lbs. I bought the lightest and realized one of the first ways to cut weight is apparently getting rid of the side handle! :(
I love my Briggs & Riley (U-122CSXP-7) expandable spinner, thank you
Thank you Nick
Super great comparison video! I appreciate your time and investment! I do have one question. Would you agree that the larger sizes of these brands are just as good as the carry ons you reviewed? Thank you so much!
I wish I would have watched before buying my solgaard luggage. The carry on closet is super heavy if I ever have to weigh…thanks for the video!
Love the curls! 💪💪💪🤣
Thanks for the solid info. When I was researching this a while back and these were items I thought were important, concerned about or avoided:
avoid wobbly handles
Wheels should steer straight
Avoid single wheels
How far it will roll, should roll freely
Avoid heavy bag, light is good
Dont buy just because its attractive
Must have space/expanse below top of bottom wheels, i.e. embedded wheels are better
Poor quality zippers - should glide smooth
Side handle needed, and on correct side for you
Inside should have space all the way into corners
I really appreciate this review as I've spent hours researching this exact category online. Have you done a review of the Biaggi Runway Hybrid? If so, please point me to it. Thanks so much!
I have been very pleased with the Delsey Paris Helium Aero carry on. Less than $120 on Amazon depending on your color choice.
I too have been trying out different carry on luggage for an upcoming European trip and have found the it Luggage World’s Lightest New York Softside 8 Wheel Spinner, handle is wide so runs down the sides on case instead of down the middle. Loads of room and I’m not concerned about the handle as I’ll have a backpack! Reasonable price as well!
The July carry-on light has been on my list for the last two months, but the color I want has been out of stock so I haven’t made the purchase yet. It’s so nice to see a comparative review featuring it. I haven’t considered the expandable version until now… Thank you for another amazing luggage review and comparison video.
So which are you getting? 🤔
This was a very helpful video. I am a bit new to your channel and I wonder if you have ever reviewed any of the backpacks that Rick Steves sells, one with wheels.
You should try the Cabin Max Velocity for $140. Unfortunately in the US you can’t get it with the locks. You have to buy those separately. It’s 16x8x22” and weighs 5.3 pounds.
This is great, we've been trying to improve of packing / traveling game, and always seems we fall short, we often if not always bring back bottles of booze from our travels, could you review travel with wine suitcases please?
I got the Travelpro Maxlite 5 two wheel softside for my trip to Singapore last spring as it fits 45L. I really like it. Not a spinner, but it did well.
Two wheels work great on cobblestone!
In India we have Samsonite 72h DLX which is a soft sided luggage and weighs only 1.8kg or 3.97 pounds. Had heard great about it. Was surprised not a mention about it in the video.
Great reviews. Thanks for the work. I bought my Monos bag on your recommendation and love it. 💕 Is it m imagination or are your sideburns longer?🤔
Haha thanks! I was in desperate need of a haircut at the time of filming this.
Keep in mind that Ryan Air depth is the narrowest at 20cm! Most of these bags other than July are deeper than that!
Is travel pro approved for international and all the American 🇺🇸 Airlines? Southwest etc
What are your thoughts on the $170 carryon from Target? Thanks
With all your travels, do you prefer soft side or hard side luggage?
Thanks sir
Did you take your measurements from the handle is closed down to the bottom of the wheels? The airlines are getting more and more picky. On the travel pro soft side that you show, Will the dimensions meet the 22 / 14 / 9 total dimensions? Travel pro has both at 20 and a 21 inch carry on. The 20 inch, according to the website, is the 22x14x9.
Smaller of the two. Yes measured full bag. Travelpro posts measurements according to their internal dimensions - kind of tricky. I took (and showed) external dimensions.
Hi Nik, any thoughts on the best convertible rolling bag?
Carry-on sizing has become more restrictive. Both American and Alaska list maximum carry-on dimensions of 22"x14"x9". The "best overall" choice TravelPro Maxlite 5 has overall dimensions of 23"x14.5"x9". I wouldn't worry too much about being asked to use the sizer when flying domestically on these carriers, but it could absolutely cause problems with an ultra low-cost carrier or when flying internationally.
Those measurements aren't reflective of the Maxlite 5 shown in this video.
Take a look at the compact 20 in.
I think excluding the Rimowa is a bad idea, I recently switched to them with my main luggage because Samsonite repair costs were absolutely insanely high. Rimowa meanwhile fully covers all functional damages in full forever. So obviously most options are cheaper, but if you use something for 15 years this will even out. My Samsonite carryon did cost 300$, repair now costs the same. That's about 100US$ a year to own and use this and I am not a super heavy user. My next repair will push the price to the Rimowa essential cabin but if I had the Rimowa I can just walk in any Rimowa shop worldwide and get most things fixed on the spot. I tried to get my Samsonite fixed in Tokyo and the shops wouldn't even take it... Had to send it in, at my own expense obviously.
For me your assessment is only valid if you are a very light user or change luggage in 3-5 years anyways and always will have this as carry on in absolutely controlled circumstances. Aome of these bags would be done after a couple of tours through the cargo hold...
Every bag should have litre capacity, how much can you fit in the bag! Size really matters
I love my carry on - Samsonite Airea. Much lighter than all the rest - only 1.8 KG. It has a few versions, mine is the strict one, there is an expandable version as well. it is the best for international travel, and somehow it's been overlooked in all the reviews I see online, and for no good reason. Used it for 2 years already, and I highly recommend it.
I’m surprised you didn’t include the monos international carry on for your review
Travelpro is my favorite brand, for any luggage. Less expensive than Samsonite, and better quality in my opinion.
If going carry-on only, which I always try to do, I'd never use a spinner as it loses so much volume compared to recessed double wheels. Weight counts but so does packing space.
PS Have used Aerolite 2-wheel and the Brics 2-wheel extensively and they have lasted for years.
Hi, do the heights include the wheels? Great video!
Yes
I was hoping Samsonite's Ecodiver Carry-on Wheeled Duffel would make the list ... really want to see some review on it before getting my hand on one
I liked the spinner wheels on my level 8, but it was just too heavy for my 4 week Europe trip. I bought and am still waiting to get the TravelPro with two wheels. I have heard the 2 wheels are better in Europe. Did you find any preference between 2 or 4 wheels?
I'm still a 4 wheel fan. The lost internal space is not that much IMO and 4 wheels are nice when you need them. It's 2 wheeled luggage when you decide you want to roll it that way too.
@@awaytogether also, on the it luggage you recommended, the wheels attach on the outside, so no internal space is lost in the corners. This feature really does give you additional packing cube space.
I’d love a review of the smallest and lightest carryon bags. Expandable and non expandable. I think most people agree that a side handle is necessary, nice wheels, good organization, non wobbly handle, decent price. lol. Does such a bag exist?
I need the extra pockets.... otherwise I have to take a big purse!.
Regarding TSA lockets, if this is a carry on I do not think they are so essential. However some people might miss them in the travel pro.
Where did you purchase the IT Lykke Cabin carry on? The link takes me to a British site and they don't ship to America.
Have you looked into Cabin Zero or Cabin Max??
July
What is your opinion of Hartmann InnovAire Global Carry-On? It retails for more than $550, but I recently purchased it at Costco for $235. It’s only about 4 pounds and extremely well-made. Just asking your professional opinion.
Wow! I haven't tried that bag personally but sounds like you got a great price!
ANY RESEARCH ON HEYS PRODUCTS?
I think the reason why you do not seeing a brand like Briggs & Riley on this list is the lifetime warranty they offer. My guess is that long-term durability is going to suffer when you go for the lightest weight. Travelpro may have figured this out, but I would be skeptical of most of the other brands.
The pricing on the lykke is bogus?
Samsonite has plenty of ultra light models available in Europe. Ridiculously light ones. Samsonite Airea and Litebeam are 1.8 kg (just under 4 pounds) for the cabin model. Liteshock is even lighter with 100 grams less. And it luggage has a model that weights 1.56 kg (under 3.5 pounds).
American Tourister (sister company of Samsonite) Applite 20" weighs only 4.4 lbs or 2 kg. Great wheels. Made with recycled material.
How do you feel about this bag? I've had poor experiences with American Tourister in general
What are people filling up their carryons with that an extra 2 lbs in luggage weight is the make or break on overcapacity?
Clothes
I am one of those, as one carry-on is all I travel with, plus a sling bag as personal item. For carry-on with airlines such as Qantas, 7kg is the max. Hence, every gram counts. I have been doing this for about 30 years now and for extended periods of time. No wheels either 😆
I notice you left out heys, a canadian company, i bought their cruise int'l carryon hard shell with built in tsa lock meeting all size requirements..,it is expandable from 40-48 liters and comes in at 6.6 pounds. Quality is excellent and it looks good and cost me 116.00usd
6.6 was too heavy for this video. 😢
@@awaytogether you had a six pounder,,,,not much of a diff...most will not notice the extra 1/2 pound
@@sgrant9814 I hear you. Had to draw the line somewhere. With that logic, why not 7, and then that opens the field to monos, level8, etc. I chose 6
The Lykke bag wheels look like they are waiting to be knocked off if checked. I wish you would have tested wheel durability.
It might be $240, but the BEST carry-on soft is TOTE AND CARRY roller! 😉 👍🏾♦️👌🏾💫
I love my Monos
Samsonite Europe have one hardside ( C-Lite) and two softsided ( D´Lite and Airea ) carry-on spinners under 4,2 lbs. (1,9 Kg ) All tree are 21,65" x 15,75" x 7,87" (55x40x20 cm), and retain 9,5 gal, 10,56 gal and 10,83 gal ( 36, 40 and 41 liter).
They are also available exbandable, It increase the weight 0,44 lb (0,2 kg ) and retain upto 11,62 gal (44 liter)
I have the C-Lite and love it!
Just checked the price of the Lykke in Germany. It’s over 200€ - which is a great discrepancy.
Oh that's disappointing. :( And quite a wild price swing
That handle on the Max LIte soft is really weird and a deal breaker for me...thin, 73 years old, and don't need to twist my wrist like that!
Can i have one of your bags and ship it to philippines?
I’m puzzled by your choices. With only a couple exceptions - the Travelpro being one of them - these suitcases all sit high up on their 4 sets of wheels. Since the airline dimensions for acceptable luggage INCLUDE the wheels, these bags waste a lot of space. Better by far is a 2-wheeled bag with the wheels inset two corners. With that style you are getting your money’s worth.
This is a 4 wheeled luggage comparison video
We are still Away fans.
Thinking of moving from a Baggalini tote to an Away Tote, when I carry my computer. The Away is a bit larger for those 20 hour flights.
I cannot believe that you went to the expense and trouble to make this video, and I feel really lucky that it crossed my feed. I hope that it does well and that you recoup your investment. I’ve looked at all of these bags online too, had a few of them in the cart, but then became afraid that they were actually too big. I really appreciate you putting the dimensions and weight front and center, because honestly, that’s what it’s all about.
Rimowa Cabin S is the best XD
But that definitely is not in the scope of this video with 4.2kg, just about 9 pounds. It is nice though.
🧳💪😮💨
What's your recommendation for the best budget carry on luggage 🧳 I'm taking $120 max or less
I have gone through a couple of these. In general I think you will.end up paying more on these as you will need to replace them after a while... I recommend looking for a used good one in your price range - or safe up some more or be very lucky. I saw the Paradiver light cabin from Samsonite recently for about 150$ as it was an out of production model. If you really go with the cheap one there are so many brands and companies and they are not consistently available. See what you can get and make sure the handle and the wheels are sturdy, they often break and are most of the time hard to fix.
Also think about your use case and how often you will be traveling with it. If you go for work between two airports just inside cities, taxis and public transport you get much further with a cheap bag, if you happen to have to walk outside for a while (Paris or on general many European cities) they will let you down soon.
@@fripi my problem is the last trip I went on was to Thailand it was for 2 weeks I took a full size suitcase and a empty backpack but clothes and other things being so affordable there I bought so much stuff I could barely stuff it all in my suit case. I'm not looking for the best carry on that's got every feature to it I just need something that can hold all the extra stuff I buy during my vacation. I think the best bet for me might be to just buy a knock off carry on at when I'm vacation and take that back with me.
@@dragonflame9615 Makes sense, but as you said it makes sense to buy something local as it will be cheaper. I had this a couple of times and found the easiest waz for this kind of luggage is a sort of duffle or even something like an IKEA Bag with zippers. Dirtcheap and easy to carry. So instead of going for an optimum carry-on I would suggest going for something like that, it also is a very different scenario from what the featured ones in this video were made for...
IMO $150 - $170 is a sweet spot. Not saying you can't get away with less but you pay for what you get. $700 is ridiculous and unnecessary. But close to the $200 mark seems to do the trick.
Under that mark I do like the Lykke.
