I used this formula for a recent two week trip. One week travelling around Italy and one week on a Mediterranean cruise. I packed five tops, four bottoms (including shorts, skort, and a skirt), three scarves, two dresses and one bathing suit. It all fit in a commuter style backpack. With the accessibility was good for everything from a city tour to formal night on the cruise. I was worried it wouldn’t be enough but it was perfect. I rinsed out three of the tops and I did pack underwear for every single day. I watched others struggle with large wheeled bags and was so thankful I went this route.
I love hearing success stories like yours!! I always struggle with packing like a minimalist, but I'm getting better! Carrying your wardrobe in a backpack like you did must have felt so freeing! Especially when others are struggling to lug their big suitcases around.
I personally notice less wrinkles when I use the bundle method, but I know a lot of people swear by rolling their garments. I guess whatever works for us and makes us happy is totally fine. Have a great day!
Carry-on only here for over 2 decades. Under the seat. Always learning and honing. Off to Poland in 4 days and packing 3 shirts, 3 vests, 2 pants, 3 undies, 1 bra, tech and toiletries in 2 small pouches. Also a grocery bag that folds into a small item. Small day bag that fits inside. Thx for all your tips. Makes me motivated to pack minimally. 👏🇦🇺
It sounds like you have a lot you can teach me! I am super impressed that you're not only carry-on only, but pack under the seat. Thank you for the tips and inspiration as well. Have a great trip!✈️
Good advice! I’m also a bundle packer. I’ve done 30 days in Europe in a carry on. Hand washing underwear and socks etc along the way. Did one load of laundry also. No checking in luggage and no worries about it getting lost either.
Bundle packing is the best! You are a total travel rockstar, doing 30 days in a carry-on. I need to challenge myself to build up to a month with just one carry-on. Thanks for the inspiration!
Hi! I'm so happy to have just found your channel. Whenever I am getting ready to go on a trip I am obsessed with packing videos. I have heard about the 54321 method and love how you explained the versatility of it. I just subscribed, keep up the good work!
Emily, thank you so much for the very kind words and I appreciate. you subscribing!!! I love watching packing videos too! It's part of the fun getting ready for a trip. If you're traveling soon, have a blast! 😀
bundle packing! i think i read about it in Cosmo 25 years ago (of all places) and it has really served me well. I have been able to pack business suits for job interviews without any wrinkles. love it
I love bundle packing too! I used to love Cosmo magazine back in the day, ha ha. I think I first saw bundle packing on an old episode of the Oprah show. Thanks so much for watching and happy travels!
Excellent video. I am a great fan of carryon only especially for cruises. I searched the net and found several dresses that are silky fabric and reversible so 2 dresses give me 4 nights on the dressier cruises. And they don't wrinkle. I do use packing cubes after a couple of TSA searches (even with TSA and every other clearance program). That way if they do random screen my luggage, nothing spills out on to the table where everyone else's stuff has been.
Oooh the reversible dresses for a cruise is a great idea! I generally pack in cubes also, but I never thought about TSA rummaging through my stuff on a gross table, ha ha. Thank you so much for watching!
We are using a version of this for a trip to see family and the airline only includes a personal item. But for a beach vacation, 3 swimsuits are essential for our family. We swim in the morning and usually again at night. Then a dry 3rd bathing suit to start the next day. I’m not a fan of rewearing bottoms, especially in warm weather, but sometimes it’s necessary. I’m team packing cubes for carryon luggage!
Hi just found your channel. It peaked my interest when I saw a packing video, always on the look out for any packing suggestions. But I took a look at your shorts and found you have arthritis. I too am an arthritis sufferer from the UK. I have both hips right knee and right shoulder. And I’m trying to find exercises that will help me get my muscles stronger to help ease the pain. I would love to see some more of has helped you. Thank you for the inspiration 🌿
I'm so sorry you're dealing with arthritis too. It's such an awful disease. Strengthening your muscles will definitely help you, not only to ease the pain, but also to increase your flexibility and mobility. I've made great progress in just a few months. Most of what I have learned is from Alyssa Kuhn who has the TH-cam channel @ArthritisAdventures. She has tons of videos for all kinds of arthritis, including knees and hips. I've learned more from her than from my doctors and physical therapists. Good luck and I'm wishing you healing and lots of muscle strengthening!
Brilliant ideas. What would you suggest fir a month away, all casual gear with plenty of walking, with temperatures expected between 3 degrees Celsius to 20 degrees Celsius please?
For a month long trip definitely pick neutral pieces that will all coordinate with each other. If packing in a carry-on with the 54321 method, I'd plan on doing laundry once a week. Here's what I'd do: 5 tops (all breathable like athletic fabric or Merino wool, 2 long sleeve, 2 short sleeve for warmer days or layering, and 1 light sweater or hoodie). 4 bottoms (maybe 1 pair of jeans, a pair of leggings, and 2 pair of joggers or athletic-type pants like hiking pants). 3 outerwear pieces (a medium weight coat, a warm coat, and a waterproof jacket). 2 shoes - comfy sneakers and then a sturdy pair of shoes or boots, maybe waterproof or hiking style boots. For the singles, definitely include a hat and gloves, and then things like pajamas, underwear, maybe a small backpack in place of a purse, etc. I hope this helps! It sounds like you have a fun adventure planned. 😀
Thanks - this has also helped me! I will be doing a coastal walk for 1 month in UK. I have tweaked what I had planned to bring (reduced it!) based on your suggestions. The only additional items I will bring are thermal layering pieces (2 vests and 2 thin long sleeved thermal base layers) - these I count as underwear!! Thank you - videos like this really do make a difference👏🤗
If you're taking thermals then I think she's recommending too much outerwear. Even people who hike in severe cold say you only need your base layer (thermals), mid layer (usually fleece) and outer layer. This is where the 54321 system falls down imo. Especially considering how heavy outer layers are. For a hiking trip I'd suggest 2 bottoms (don't forget, you'll be wearing your thermals much of the time so no need to wash bottoms much, and good thermals usually dry overnight). 2 short sleeve t-shirts (preferably in something moisture wicking like merino or bamboo) - don't forget, you can still wear thermals under t-shirts. 1-2 long sleeve tops, 1 fleece jacket/jumper (altho if you want to go ultra minimal you could make 1 of your long sleeve tops a thin merino jumper - if the temp stays above 0° this should be fine, since you'll be active) and a fully waterproof jacket (preferably lined and longer than mid-thigh; this will be your heaviest item so plan to wear on the plane). This might sound too minimal but plan to take accessories. I'd suggest 2 Buffs (1 thin, 1 thick), 1 Pashmina scarf, a cap and maybe a beanie. You may also consider glove liners (thinner than gloves but can be surprisingly warm - great for days where it starts out very chilly but warms up rapidly). As this is a totally casual holiday it sounds like you really only need to take hiking boots, but you could consider a pair of comfortable sandals in case the weather gets warm. You could also consider those hiking pants where the lower part of the pant is removable so they become shorts - not stylish but very popular with hikers (extremely practical)
@@susie9893 Unlike other vlogs / suggestions where they dictate what works for them, you sound highly experienced. (I'm guessing you've perfected the system through trial and error.) And it all makes perfect sense. I'm enlightened and excited because the only item you've mentioned that I don't have are the glove liners - a supremely brilliant idea. Thanks to you, I feel much more at ease.
@@rosannathomson5282 yes, *much* trial and error 😏. Plus a lot of research. But sounds like you've done well yourself! I hope you have a GREAT holiday! 😃 (Wish I was going too 😉)
My problem is not clothing but all of the "other" things I need. Where do you pack your blow dryer, flat iron, makeup, toiletries, phone chargers, etc. There is no way I can fit all of that in a carry-on piece of luggage. I will try the way you fold your clothing next time I pack. Thanks
I agree that packing the "other stuff" is much more challenging than clothing. Chargers always go in my personal item. If I travel carry-on only I really streamline what else I choose to take. Minimal makeup, no hair dryer, etc. BUT, you get to decide what is more important - having all the things that make you comfortable with you or traveling with minimal luggage. There is no right or wrong way to do it, in my opinion. Sometimes I choose to bring the big suitcase and check it! I recently went on a 9 day trip and checked a bag because I wanted all the comforts of home with me and gear for hiking and going to the beach. Don't ever feel pressured into minimalist packing if it's not for you. 😀
And I would still say that's more than enough for 1 week. I don't like this method - I'm a carryon only girl who's moving toward personal item only and this method makes no sense to me. You should be making a list of all the activities you'll be doing then thinking about what clothing items you'll need to fulfil all those activities with the least amount of clothes possible. Be logical, smart, ruthless (with yourself) and think outside the box. Sometimes you might need more tops, or more bottoms, or more shoes, whatever. Just always be thinking of ways to maximise each item of clothing (and if you can't do that then you're probably taking the wrong clothing) and you'll find you can take so much less than you thought possible
I find less wrinkles when I use the bundle method vs. rolling up items. That said, if space is very limited (like packing a personal item only) or if you will be moving around a lot and it's not practical to unpack, rolling might be a better option.
To really pack light you have to be okay with wearing bottoms 2-3 times and some tops if they are Merino wool can be worn 2-3x also because they don't hold bacteria & odors
If you choose your pieces wisely (so that the tops go with all the bottoms, etc.) then you can easily travel for a week, possibly 2. Choosing fabrics that are easy care and can be washed out in a sink if you don't have access to laundry facilities. I hope this helps!
I had pajamas on top of the bundle right before I started folding. I brought one pair of undies and socks for each day of the trip and those went in a small packing cube on the other side of the suitcase where I put my extra pair of shoes and cosmetics. This was just a one week trip and I had access to a washing machine. If I was traveling for a longer time frame I'd absolutely have to do laundry on the trip. Most of the pieces I brought are easy-care and can be washed out in a sink. I hope this helps!
I find the bundle method only works if younare going to one destination. But if you are changing lodging daily ornevery couple days, then it is cumbersome as you have to unpack everything to get to one piece. Time consuming.
Taking a lounging outfit is so much more practical than taking PJs. You'll get far more use out of it, especially if you can sleep naked for much of the trip (saves on laundry)
Ditch the hard shell luggage, expandable or not. And, depending on where you're going, ditch anything on wheels. Useless weight, protrusions, and "unstuffability"! BTW, 5'1" 65 y.o. female here. If you can't carry it, you don't need it!
You're a travel rock star! I appreciate your independent spirit, but I think packing only totes, backpacks, or luggage without wheels isn't practical for everyone, especially if someone has back issues, arthritis, or other mobility issues. 😊
@@FromSagansStardust so true! People forget that the wheels not only add dimensions but also weight. I've travelled with suitcases and with backpacks and now I'm team backpack. Weighs less, more portable, can run to catch transport if needed, keeps you from doing too much shopping and you're less likely to be forced to check your bag in my experience
I don't like this method. Allows too much leeway for overpackers imo (I know cos I've heard the excuses: "I can take this many bottoms cos I use the 54321 method", even when they don't need that many bottoms). This is far too much stuff if you're only travelling for a week. If you're only travelling for 1 week you should be able to do personal item only (yes, I've done this easily, and in winter); unless you're travelling for work - that really complicates things (or perhaps a destination wedding - and even that can be done carryon only)
Definitely the clothing could have been streamlined further. The cool thing is we are all different and get to decide what to pack and what to leave at home. I like lots of options, ha ha. I appreciate you taking the time to comment!😀
