a Long Hot Day around Carlisle!
    34046 Braunton
    Class 47s, Class 57,
    Class 66,
    Class 68,
    Class 70s including double heading
    Class 88
Recorded at Mossband, Carlisle station and at Low Row, site of a closed station near Aspatria.
    18 May 24
It was a really hot day. Beautiful blue skies too for the Northern Belle charter to Edinburgh and for the Saphos Trains Lakelander charter around the Cumbrian Coast.
The time difference between outbound and return workings of the Northern Belle dictated how long I was out!
I spent an hour at Mossband primarily to catch the Northern Belle charter heading towards the border and Scotland but also caught the empty fuel tanks heading from Dalston to Grangemouth. Plus some morning passenger workings.
At the Citadel I caught Braunton and train heading into the stationand being taken out to Upperby for servicing etc.
I;d intended to catch Braunton again somewhere on the coast such as Nethertown. However a combination of timings (I'd never get back to see the evening freight plus I was feeling really hot and tired) meant I managed to see it just north of Aspatria A pretty spot but not what I had planned.
Back at the Citadel I saw a number of the evening freights head north, many over an hour early. Then the Northern Belle stopped for a crew change. Finally two extra freights - from Longport to Carlisle Yard and a southbound Car Empties to Doncaster.
The times shown on clips are for guidance only and shouldn't be taken as definitive.

Great video Mr Gilpin as ever. The 47 was giving as much smoke as Braunton as she left to Upperby

Thanks! I know Braunton would be using rubbish coal like all steam these days but the oil? The 47 is showing her age

Thanks Les for a great video on a very warm day. The icing on the cake for me was seeing a rebuild Bulleid pacific. Such good looking locos, hardly run in when scrapped in the 1960s.

Glad you enjoyed it. I must admit I find them - and the rebuilt MNs among the best of the BR era

Hello, Les. AN excellent production. Nice change of scenery and the expected mix of great trains and intents. The Northern Belle is definitely worth the effort... a lovely train and set of coaches. "Hot" is a big term, as we are going to be 33-34C the next few days. Yuck.

Thanks Anthony - we might have hit 30 that day. I needed a few gallons of water or pop to keep me going!

Braunton has been a busy loco this month. My parents were being hauled by this engine at the beginning of May between Taunton and Dartmouth (they actually got on at Abergavenny but between Abergavenny and Taunton they were hauled by “Flopsie” and another diesel whose name and number I forget!). I think that was a Saphos charter too.

Yes it was! I was hoping for the coast but couldnt get to where I planned and back - plus even with air con in the car it was baking so wasn't worth it,

@@LeslieGilpinRailways I don't blame you in heat like that. Don't like being in a baking hot car myself. I went to GCR and it was very warm there too after a cool misty start to the day.

An interesting location at Mossband - a bit difficult to access without a car! You were wise not to have tried for Nethertown - that humidity meant that the scenery wasn't quite all that it might have been - ideal location for a crisp cold day, once again provided you have a car.

Next time! I'm in danger fof opverusing the three locations I;ve been using a little too much - but then can't be too much compared to the station

Another well produced and edited video with a great variety of traffic Leslie and a superb watch! The variety of locations amazes me and you must have spent quite some time and effort getting around them all! I particularly liked the clips of "Braunton" and the clip of her, powering along at Low Well ?? or something, was an outstanding display of steam power in action Liked too, the double headed 70s and their train of trucks and "Cromer Lighthouse" (or Lifeboat!). Lots of others to Feast upon and enjoy.
Best Wishes from Ken in Ayrshire . Keep up the great work Leslie!!

Many thanks! The first location is about 5 or 6 miles out so no real distance. The second at Low Row is 20-ish miles. It was worth staying back in the evening for freights I don't normally see.

On the other hand the Cumbrian Coast is a little used gem!
