- Think twice before using PS5 Rest Mode! If your Playstation 5 has this bug, it will crash while using Rest Mode... Follow these steps to fix the PS5 rest mode brick problem. Your PS5 may crash in rest mode if your Playstation has "HDMI Device Link" enabled. First, I recommend disabling this feature if you experience the PS5 rest mode issue. If this doesn't work, I recommend changing your Playstation 5 "Power to USB in Rest Mode" Setting to Always. You can also switch it to "Off".. Lastly, you can invest in a battery backup for your PS5. same. mines actually the complete opposite. I don't even use the controller to wake the ps5 back up, I use the HDMI features to wake up the ps5 from the TV's input instead. Maybe that's why I never have an issue.
Great info! Thank you very much. I’ll just add that the link provided suggest a 225W battery back up but maximum consumption of PS5 is rated 350W. So I consider we should get a bigger one considering that most of will add other devices like the tv, speakers, etc.
Very informative! Had the exact problem, my issue wasn't with HDMI Device Link but rather the supply power to USB ports, previously had it set to 3 hours because after a long gaming session you jus want to plug yr controller n make sure it's good next time you pick it up, but it kept crashing every single time, so bought an external charging dock, disabled the feature and I haven't had a problem since!
And FYI always have yr console connected to a UPS, super important!

This also applies to PS4 to great extent, which in addition to saying console wasn't properly shut down, it also beeps 3 times before it goes to rest mode, and sometimes even when it's shutting down. As soon as I hear these 3 beeps, I know what screen will greet me next time when I boot my console :) I just did these tweaks, and I'm also using UPS, so let's see what happens after..

This has been happening to me since the day I got my PS5 about a year ago. I just turned my HDMI link off earlier today and then I see this video, so I'm really hoping this is the fix I've been after these past twelve months. Thanks for the great, helpful content, as always, John!
Edit: My PS5 is now regularly crashing when in rest mode again. If anyone has any tips or anything please let me know. I can’t deal with this shit all over again.

I've had mine since launch. Have always had rest mode issues. I've tried everything including these things. A couple of months ago I changed the auto sign in to off, and fully shut it down. Then unplugged power source, unplugged HDMI, and also the LAN cable. Plugged everything in 10 minutes later and I haven't had a rest mode issue since. Not saying it's a fix, but it's worked for me so far, knock on wood.

You haven't had issues with the UPS battery? I haven't got one yet but ppl are saying that since the power bank is 255w, it's pretty much useless to the ps5 since it consumes 350w. Do you happen to use a better one?

Thanks for providing helpful solutions for all of us just one thing regarding the ups section. That APC 450 ups only supports 255w, the PS5 takes at the max 350w
that's a no go if your power goes out. I did asked a relative who is an electrician and he said that you will need a ups that can support 600w or more.
For HDMI device link (CEC), I had to start turning my PS5 off via the display instead of the PS5. If you signal the PS5 to go into rest mode through the UI, and then turn off the display, it'll crash. Just doing it through CEC works great.
This has been a problem since launch. I use rest mode often and thankfully this happens on very rare occasions.
May be better to just turn off the ps5. We don't have to leave downloads on overnight for a game (I improved my legacy router though for some reason my Xbox one is faster, but still it's 3 times faster like Char Aznable when I play gundam lol).
I am glad people online are identifying flaws with the ps5, especially as we shouldn't toss out our ps3 when it can't run some ps1 games properly let alone cost more while lacking manuals. I'm Good with old-fashioned rumble without needing a silly default mic off to activate it and lock on triggers which get old.

Great video! For me, my TV screen turned completely green more than a couple of times when I tried putting my PS5 to Sleep/rest mode. Last time it did that the console did not turn on for an hour and when it did, it was in safe mode and all my data was lost. I have been turning it off manually ever since.

You should never use rest mode any device. When you PC and PS5 is on the has fan but in rest mode the ni fan and just keep get hot with nothing to cold it.

You can leave it overnight and the game will keep downloading
Fully turning the system off makes the download stop

Is the device link even needed at all? I mean what's the point?
device link sucks on the PS5, between other things, it should be supposedly useful to turn the tv alongside the console and vise versa, but it doesn't do any of that and instead turns on only when I use the device link on my series X. it's a real mess.
In my case, having it on did turn on the TV and system but it also frequently crashed when going into rest mode. Now it's back to the old days of turning each device on and scrolling through the input channels lol
Just last week we had a huge power outage while my PS5 was in safe mode. It ended up corrupting the software. Had to wipe and reinstall the OS. Thankfully between cloud storage and second internal HD, no data was lost.

Hi John, your videos are amazingly helpful! Thank for for these, also please look into the issue where after the latest system software update, the DualSense controller isn't working properly. In my case, the haptic feedback has stopped working, particularly for FIFA 21. Not sure why this is happening but I request you to please make a video about this issue. I guarantee you the controller has no issues, not just me but several other users who have been replacing their controllers for free are still going through this trouble. Please help.

Thanks for the heads-up just got my PS5 yesterday. Didn't think they'd still be running into issues with this console being out as long as it has been. Always great advice man keep it up. Sad tho because I did leave it in rest mode currently at work will check on it asap.

I only had this problem happen one time and it was the first week of release.. I really don’t think this is much of an issue anymore. I use rest mode everyyy day allll the time. I do have that hdmi device link turned off and that seemed to be the issue
I’m sure this problem isn’t as common as it looks. It’s never happened to me… but I have also always made my settings in the same way he said to put them, so maybe that helps too.
Hey. I ran into a problem today (the second day since I got my PS5). I had left a game to download and it probably went into rest mode and when I came back, the screen was blank and nothing I did (even long pressing the power button) was turning on the PS5/display.
I had to turn off the power source for a few minutes and then switched it on to make it work.
Have you experienced this?

Once I saw that UPS, I already knew he was a man of trust. Ive deployed over 400 of that exact model in the office I work at. Perfect for a light load system like a console or office PC.
Not had this happen as yet, and i do have a 2TB external drive on it aswel.
But always watch John videos for anything connected to playstation, best channel going for this type of stuff 👍
Something to add. I personally don’t think it has to due to the HDMI, cause what I’ve noticed is that warning only comes up if you unplug your AC power cord or it’s not properly in all the way. That’s usually why that warning comes up, and I use rest mode a lot and that never came up for me. As long as your PS5 turns off without you unplugging the AC power cord. Hope this made sense
Mine has power going to it constantly the plug is always in the wall . I use rest mode alot and it crashes all the time. The hdmi control is the only thing that could be causing my issue now that I watched the video. It makes sense that when the TV energy save powers off it turns the system off as well.

No. Who unplugs their system after putting it into rest mode or turning it off? This is not a power cord issue
Power outages, dependign on where you are the power can turn off briefly (or not so briefly) in the night or whenever. Expect it more and more as they keep coming after our energy grid, like in CA. And if they declare a you know what emergency like they are drooling to, get used to this.
I have used a power supply with my consoles and pc for over a decade. It’s always nice to have the power go out and keep playing for the hand full of seconds it takes to normally come back on. Plus, if the power doesn’t come back, it gives you the time to save/log off or do what you need to shutdown.

I have the digital edition of ps5 I use rest mode when I go to bed and have my rest mode power to USB for 3 hours so to charge my pulse 3d headphones I also have hdmi device link ON so when I press the controller to make make the ps5 power on it will also turn my monitor on I have not come across any of these problems but it is still nice to know for future reference incase I come across this problem 👍 thanks John for always keeping us informed of the now and maybe the future 😀 great content as always 👌 you are the go to guy for ps5

I had one of those battery backups for my pc about 18 year ago and it worked great. It died out after 10 years but I said I was gonna invest in getting a new one for my PS4 & 5 and my laptop. They are great to have.
I was getting it without using rest mode.had to repair the console and external harddrive.complete pain but using those tips I've not had any problems since.cheers

Not even 2 days later, after I put it in rest mode a green screen appears, and the console completely shuts down. As far as I have seen, Sony has not made rest mode safe for use on the current and past generation.
This is a known issue for launch PS5 consoles, specifically the small amount of units manufactured outside of japan and in china that had shitty motherboards. It’s a motherboard hardware issue and no software update or factory reset can fix this. Stopping the HDMI Link is only a temporary solution, and crashing can still happen if you put the console into rest mode while a game is on. I had to send my PS5 in for repairs, they swapped the old motherboard for a new motherboard (had to back up and factory reset it beforehand). FYI, Sony has silently extended their warranty for this issue. If your unit is a launch console (purchased at launch or serial number determines it’s a launch unit) you should be able to send your console in for repairs and it’s considered still under warranty even though the year warranty has passed. Contact Sony to confirm.

the reason that this usually happens for me is in the event of a power outage when in rest mode (which happens frequently in my area), and I do not think that anything will fix that. We just have to deal with it :(
You could use a UPS
I don't use rest mode, it's unstable still, I used to, but it also stopped charging my astro a50 gen 4 on base station, apparently not supplying enough power while in rest mode.
That's quite the uniformed claim there. I've been using it non stop since I got my PS5 in August 21. Please stop saying stuff based on anecdotal evidence, if it was unstable the majority of users would have issues with it. This internet of just saying shit because you got keyboard and fingers needs to stop, you don't have evidence to prove those claims, you don't even have the data on figures of who uses it and who doesn't, data of the number of PS5 digital or standard. Nothing, just baseless claim because early on after release it had issues. You'd get fired if you worked for a company and said unsubstantiated stuff like you're saying.
It's easier to say, you don't trust it because "I don't think it's stable" you can't take your opinion and use it as fact, that's not how things work on life.
Also are Astros you're using officially liscensed products, pretty sure if they are then they'd work more often than not when charging on rest mode, if they aren't then you know why, they aren't official and probably reverse engineered it and guessed the power draw from rest mode. There's always tiers, I've never seen any Astro A50 officially license for use with PS5 by Sony, so can you enlighten us all? Using unlicensed peripherals on the console is user risk, Sony has zero accountability when you do that.

Is there any risk to it having to reboot in this mode? I’ve had some crazy power fluctuations lately and had to do this a couple times. Besides the annoyance of having to wait about 90 seconds, everything always seems to be just fine once the process is finished.

I learned my lesson with the PS4, that if you want to use Rest Mode, a UPS is practically a requirement. So I just continued on with that tradition on my PS5 and I've never once had the issue described in the video
I just got my PS5 and this happened last night when on Netflix page and turned off my TV before turning off my PS5. So when the PS5 loses HDMI connection it automatically goes into rest mode and I had a hard time getting it to turn back on while it was in rest mode I thought I was going to have a problem. Original PS5 on a LG C2, all software up to date, in 2024.
Additional, I noticed my LG magic remote was switching on the PS5, so I already suspected it was a TV conflict problem.
I'm always amazed with how many external gadgets you can connect to our consols

Thanks for the info. Would be helpful in these videos if you explained exactly what we are turning on/off. Fine if it fixes rest mode, but if turning it off disables one touch play, then no, not worth it for the 1/1000 times it shuts down improperly.

One of my favorite features is the hdmi link power on. Pushing the power button on my controller and having my ps5 and TV turn on is great. I disabled the reverse option tho were when I turn off my TV it turns off the ps5. My ps5 is in rest mode quite a bit and fortunately I've never seen this issue.
