Don't Buy A PlayStation Portal Until You See This

- Before you buy a PlayStation Portal, you need to know the truth about what this console really is. The PS Portal is actually a PS5 remote play device that connects to your PlayStation 5 only when it has power or in Rest Mode. You cannot play games on the Portal without a PS5. The PlayStation Portal is also NOT as "portable" as you think, as no carrying case comes with this handheld console. The likelihood of "controller drift" or "stick drift" on the PS Portal is also completely unknown. If you own many PS5 or PS4 game discs with few digital games, using the Portal might be a hassle for you. Finally, you cannot use the Pulse 3D headset with the PlayStation Portal, & must purchase the Pulse Elite Headset or Pulse Explore wireless earbuds to hear game sound on the Portal. Otherwise, you need to use the Portal's built-in speakers or connect a headset or earbuds using the headphone jack.
There are some things I really like about the PlayStation Portal. For example, you can game on the Portal while someone else is using the TV that your PS5 is connected to. The size and feel of the PS Portal is great in the hands & comfortable. The screen is beautiful, & responsiveness when using Wi-Fi is great. You can use the PlayStation Portal comfortably anywhere in your home!

The Portal would have made more sense if it has the option to use 4G/5G connection
They do…
@@JudahIAmKng nop, it doesn’t support a cellular network connection

When I use my portal at home my wireless headset is connected to the ps5

Exactly, did was wrong on several points in this video
Is backbone better ?
@@taffygore6285 Backbone is way too expensive for what it is and to have used multiple ways of playing in Remote Play, PS Portal is the best way to do that. Backbone is the most convenient for portability though.
Pls don’t call it a console

I legit just got a PS Portal last Friday 😂 haven’t had any issues with it yet, and so far no latency issues at all, and every game I played on it looks stellar.
how much mbps ur internet connection?
@@zain7270 I believe I have the fastest Xfinity offers for residential. Just did a speed test on Ookla, and got 148 download and 50 upload. That speed also fluctuates on my phone depending on where I’m at in my house.
@@_Nomad_0 depends on the game. Immortals of Aveum was rough, and I feel like a lot of FPS games would be hard to play on it, but that’s just me. Returnal is amazing on it, Sackboy is perfect for it, and racing game or platformer feels and looks great, every indie game I’ve tested look great. For me this is the perfect “sick day” device. I’ll play it in bed or in the living room when I don’t wanna hide in the game room all day lol. RPG’s are also perfect on the smaller screen. Persona 4 Golden looks awesome on it as well as Dragon Quest 11.
@@zain7270 That's the thing. People who complain about connectivity issues aren't actually able to use that as a con towards the portal. It's out of the portals hands. Good connection, good experience. This goes for any device.
Are you able to play online multiplayer games?
Thank you for the wonderful information 😊
Its is useful for grinding in some games, a bit expensive however.
How’s it expensive? The ps controller itself cost close to 90 bucks. On top of that you’re getting a high end LCD display which is roughly around 100 something and built in speakers. For 200 bucks that’s not a bad price at all.
@@JudahIAmKng Is useful but for being just a controller with a screen it is expensive, still bought it a month ago.
200 bucks is quite expensive for what it is.
@@JudahIAmKng because it has a built in $90 controller that's gonna give out just as fast as the regular ones
Yeah woulda been perfect and competitive at 100$
I played ghost of Tsushima on my dad's portal and it played great. I wouldn't play online games on it, but single player games I think would be great on it.
It is
Yup. Offline games is all I play.
If you got AT&T with ok download speeds and lots of people in the house using it, do you think I would lag out a lot with single player games? I tried playing with my tablet and ran into this problem but I was thinking maybe it had to do with the hardware of the tablet not being able to handle PS5 games.
Could i play wwe2k24 but like not really online
I purchased a $20 router from wallmart linked it to hotel wifi using my phone then the portal will by pass internet authentication without browser.
Sony, just give us a real handheld.
It’s not possible
@Shiloh315 in this era, everything is possible.
@@PSG51 it’s not possible you thinking too deep… if the technology was here. The ps5 or even pc wouldn’t be a thing…

So this won’t be able to connect to hotel wifi then? Because you need a web browser to connect hotel wifi
It's really confusing because Sony said the Portal is just an accessory. But they also count it as a console sold? In my opinion if it cannot run any games locally it's not a console. All it does is act as a secondary screen when you cannot play on your TV and you have to stream it over your Internet connection.
Wait they count it as console sold? That's cheating the numbers.
Accessory is more accurate.
@@iljun3089 Only if it's being lumped in with PS5 console sales and not simply Portal console sales. OP never clarifies either way, so assumptions are not merited.
A console would be if its like the psvita or the psp now those were better
It's not a console. It's paper weight without a ps5.
I bought one and now it collects dust… still cool to look at and wonder what could have been
Would you sell it?👀 lol
Thanks for all the information 👍 😊😊😊
So does that mean in theoretical terms of course that someone could log onto their account and leave yours signed in on the ps5 and still be signed on the portal as well ?
Thanks John for the Portal video!
I have a question. In my home network, my PS Remote play with tablets or phone in that matter, does not have a good performance. From what I understand, PSPortal also connects directly to PS5 without a Wifi?
Have you ever done and video on receiving input lag when using a good monitor like and odyssey g7 curved at the correct settings. Yet games can say input lag like Cod or Rb6 ?
It's a cool concept but there can be a considerable input lag even with high speed internet connectivity, especially for demanding or intensive games. I suppose that's more or less expected
So does it use bandwidth or just piggyback on the same wifi channel? I only have a 25mbps connection at best and others use it to streaming netflix etc
from local wifi network it shouldn't use internet, but a good wifi access point can help with the stability
If you have a iPad or phone and want to play on the go connect your controller first to it then go to remote play and also you must put your ps5 on remote play enabled and after you link it you are ready to go
I don't know if you've tried it, but how well does it work if your PS5 is connected to your home network via WiFi?
If you are at home and you have your headphones wirelessly connected via the USB dongle to your PS5, you can technically use those headphones while playing remotely on your Portal for the audio.
There's many people I see that don't seem to be catching onto this fact 👍
@G.HAINSY79 I think many are failing to catch on to lots of things. It's easier for people to make petty complaints because they can't afford something than to acknowledge it.
@ivankawnartist too true mate
There are so many little things with like no web browser, no Bluetooth , possible stick drift in a year if they fix all those things maybe it’s worth 200
I love how every review I’ve seen says you CAN’T use your pulse 3D headset……..I’m using mine because as I say every review doesn’t say that the pulse 3D has a jack port and comes with a jack cable. So you CAN use the 3D headset wired but not wireless
Even use it wireless while you're at home (and in range) thanks to the wifi dongle
Thank you for this review.
I'll break it in half accidentally...COD
un less you have great wifi the latency would be bad for fast game s like that
Lol
YOU WON'T PLAY PVP WITH IT.
I tried cod on it and I don't recommend it at all
If you connect it with a Type-C cable to the PS5, will it prevent the delay? @@raymondc7567
You forgot to mention that it has all the same features as a proper dual sense controller. You still get trigger effects and dynamic vibration with the PlayStation portal, something you wouldn't get over any other remote Play device even if you were controlling it with a dualsense
I finished the whole ghostwire tokyo with platinum with the portal alone. Apart from the connectivity issues, it's amazing. Even with the same wifi and having the device nearby, it doesn't connect most of the time..
It's amazing, but doesn't connect most of the time?
@@eugenevictortooms4174 Yes, even if the connection and network speed are good, it'll take 5-6 tries to connect
But it does work even out of the country. I tried and can confirm. My console is in different country and i brought my portal to different country and tried logging in and it worked
I really like it its cool to stream the games when some one using the tv where your ps5 is connected.
Thanks for the video 🎉
Wii u kinda did the same thing back in 2012. If someone was using the tv you could switch it to the gamepad. Only difference is you had to be kinda close to the console.
I'm getting mine tomorrow, after hunting it down for so long. I'll see what the hype is. I'm hoping it's better than running chiaki on the deck.
How is it? Might get one this weekend
Can't wait for a "Don't buy the Pulse Explore wireless earbuds until you see this" video.
So like if you buy this and let’s say you are at someone’s house and you bring your portal with you. Can you still use this by connecting to someone else’s wifi or no?
Will my play station portal work if my ps5 is in California and I’m in Arizona
For some reason, I can’t enable remote play. The setting is just grayed out. Does anyone know why?
This device is for dads who want to game on the coach or in bed while the kids are on the tv or when dads are at the kid's soccer game and want to game.
This comment screams lack of testosterone.
If you’re a dad and not watching your kid play at a soccer game then that’s honestly just pathetic. I looked over at my parents every single time when I played soccer up all the way through high school. If they were staring at a screen that would’ve devastated me. I can understand the TV one but not being present of mind for their game is disgusting.
Are mums allowed to game?
@rickrickboom5423 bro there's no rules to who can and can't game, get some common sense bro
@@irishlad1367 bro my point went way over your head... Bro
So question you need the actual ps5 to be able to use the playstation portal meaning you cant use the portal unless u have the console?
Great ,question!! If that's the case.. It's pointless
Does anybody remember the 10 ft ps5 charging cable? It had the playstation logo on it and all black beside the 2 end pieces. I need to buy another one
The only "bad" thing about the portal is all the people who didn't research ANY OF THIS before they bought one. People that keep calling it a console is a close 2nd lol. If you want a console, go buy a steamdeck but no other device used for remote play that I've used, Backbone and Steamdeck included, do remote play as well or feel as good in my hands🤷🏽♀️
still amazed how you pack so much information in a 4mims video! awesome job
2:07 Literally get the same experience with a phone using the streaming app but with the controller separated from the screen so you can set it down and just kick back and relax.
You are right PSPlay app craps all over the portals lagging horrible experience
It's not the same because the portal screen is huge, no blue tooth to deal with, no controller/phone battery drain. Also with phone, anytime u change screens you gotta reconnecr
I don't have a 1000 dollar phone and hate touch controls, so picking up a portal is the cheapest option still
@@stijnvonck1431 dont need a 1000 dollar phone with the PSPlay app, I use an old 8gb phone from 2019 and it runs fine
@@stijnvonck1431 also phones are not made for gaming. it heats so fast and battery dies fast. gaming on phone also kills battery life.
I find that this isn’t worth it. I get constant disconnections at home even and I do check that both the ps5 and the portal are using the same connection as well. Always disconnecting and sometimes poor connection which makes the game looks fuzzy like your watch a hi res TH-cam video with Bad connection . ATM it’s been sitting unused for the past month. Prolly not using it again.
The switch remains undefeated is all i hear
nahh, steam deck destroys the switch
Not connecting to public networks is so bad! If you're expected to connect to your phones hotspot all the time then why not give it 5G?
Great video, John
So does that mean you can use it down the road providing you are hot spotting WiFi off a phone?
Yes
1 question ! ... can u use this device ... if u have example 2 person using this ps5... can the other use ps5 on tv and other one using other profile to use portable device ?
what is the answer ?
Will a game like Rust be playable on this device ?
😎 Very Clearly explained & concise and to the point and I love the fact that you pointed out stick drift issue what if I love those what ifs to spend that kind of money and you just get stuck with a broken device I don't know if it's worth it but PlayStation needs to address this and I think we will hear something in the near future because of people like you put in it on the forefront to consider for the users like us Thank you You appreciated keep up the good work
No it’s not worth the premium price tag. Once I learned that it requires an internet connection, and not just being able to DL my games so I can actually use it on the go, it chose to forego it because it’s not what I’m actually looking for in my mobile gaming.
$199 is a premium price point?
@@_AmericanDad_ the psp and vita were premium items, costing between 100 and 200 in their respective times, and could work independently of the systems they were associated with, the portal cannot do that, so yes, it’s not worth the premium price, yes that’s a premium price as it comes to accessories. For that price it should be able to function independent of the PS5, much like its predecessor’s, and even the controllers and headsets.
So you want a steam deck for $199? nah@@skullfracture3870
You knew the specs since day 1 of announcement. Nothing is new about it not able to download games to it lol
I really want to get one for my son cuz he takes up mines, but can anybody answer this question.. My PS5 has my account and one I made for him using the family thingy.. Now if I get one could I play on my console under my account and he play under his on the portal? Or would it not work becuz of the portal being connected to the PS5?
i regret buying this. warning! test how playstation remote looks on your phone and if you like it then buy the portal. i wish i did that. anyways very good video, i wish i watched this before buying the portal.
So you can still use it when your not connected to your home WiFi as long as your connected to some sort of WiFi and your PlayStation is on or in rest mode your able to play ?
Yes I actually do this on my phone. I'm currently playing persona 5 on my tablet and I'm not home. I just had to sign in and had my ps5 on rest mode
I lent my PS portal to my brother and he plays on my PS5. He lives about 7 Miles away! He says no complains at all! I know he just plays FC24 but when I had the PS portal I used to play Horizon, Sackboy, GOW, hollow Night, and it was great!
could I use the playstation portal to play on my account in the living room and my girlfriend play on her account in her room at the same time with the same ps5?
Couldnt you just remote play on your cellphone and buy a $10 controller mobile gaming clip? Doesn't it pretty much function similar?
Also a good reminder if you use hotspots you will be on nat type 3.
Please explain
I'm not to tech savvy but is that good or bad ?
@@PitBot808 it's bad. If you're going to play multiplayer you need a nat type 2 or open nat type. Nat type 3 is closed which means you can only connect to people who are also on nat type 3.
Will you though because the game is essentially running from your ps5 on your home Wi-Fi and this is essentially just a second screen?
@Carswell_95 You can also take it anywhere else and play away from home. This is when hotspots will give you nat type issues. But it's also dependent on your phone provider.
I passed until the next portable console
Waste of resources..
Will the portal have left stick drag?
My dualsense controller stick has the drift, but the sticks on this are different. Idk about internally but externally they are smaller in size which makes me believe they won't get drift and sony quietly changed the sticks
@@CC-xy8nn Sony has def done atleast three redesigns of the Dualsense now. 1,A and now we’re on B and they’ve been working on the stick drift issue, they’re aware of it.

I'm cool with this sometimes when I'm playing rpgs and want to grind but gotta be out the house or my work area. I'd rather be outside getting fresh air but still get through my grind.
£200 is crazy for literally a screen and a controller stuck together
The controller itself is worth 70£.... £200 isnt that much when the dualsense edge is £210

John: I'll see what I can do...
I don’t think they need help. It’s selling regardless of what tech heads think.

This thing is sold out everywhere, I don't think they need any help...
say if I have suck internet can I still play it with no lag if I play it in the same room with my ps5?
No way!!!!!!!
Nice review. Thanks for sharing…!
Heading to the store in an hour to pick up my reservation
My use case: in the summer I don’t want to be in my game room. Living room is very bright and tv struggles with glare in dark scenes. So my intention is play this on those hot / sunny days or when I just don’t feel like sitting at my desk to game. I can also sit with the wife whilst she’s watching tv. I have no intention of taking it out the house and kinda wish people would actually take the opportunity to be a way from tech like this when out and about and take in the surroundings.
Would like to hear from others than have similar use case.
I’ve been contemplating buying it and honestly for very similar reasons as you. As a PlayStation fan I love collecting their products as long as they’re worth it, and my girlfriend and I work a lot of hours and after work it is sometimes a chore knowing you have to be at your desk or game room , etc. in order to game. Or if you’re like me and have access to a balcony or patio in your home it’d be perfect for getting some sunlight while gaming. My only concerns would be frames dropping tbh but besides that I think I want to invest. How has it been treating you so far after a few days ?
“You can take it anywhere” *has to be connected to the ps5 in some way*
Through the internet
But you can still take it any fuckin' where including a mountain and underwater. Not guarenteed to work tho.
Wait so I need a PS5 for this device to work!
Dude the old pulse headset comes with a wire. So you can use the original pulse headset. Just use it wired.
It also works wirelessly because of the dongle it comes with (plugged into ps5)
If you had to pick one, would you buy this or would you buy a backbone that's cheaper and you can do the same thing?
id buy a portal because I would still want to use my phone while gaming, also this has the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
You can't use the backbone an phone anywhere that has wifi can't do tht with a portal
I have a backbone and I'm getting my portal in the mail tomorrow. Would certainly choose the portal simpy due to the bigger screen, vibration feedback, etc.
Does it have a delay like my phone does?
People did this 2 month ago didn’t you have money during that time to get one were you saving
Sorry but I see absolutely no situation in which I'd need to have this.
I’d rather buy the clip that attaches your phone to your controller for $10 lmao
I really want one and the price is good I feel. I’ll still wait for a price drop I think.
It’s selling well so hopefully Black Friday if ever, for a price drop.

That would be a problem if you were going out and not a WiFi signal in sight. I would rather wait.
I was very iffy on the PSP initially but just had a bad connection that went away after an hour or so. I was able to take it upstairs and play persona 3 and Fortnite with relatively little issue, a tiny bout of stutter at some points but didn’t make the game unplayable. I picked up a pair of 3.5mm apple earbuds (didn’t know they still made these) to use with the console and some thumb grips to make the sticks feel better. Overall I’m pretty happy with the purchase but it does just make me wish they would’ve gone with a true handheld console instead.
You not truly happy.

I just love how every single review ive seen of the Portal, not a single review mentions the shitty micro-stutter that happens literally every ten seconds when you're playing a game due to the mismatched refresh rate. You can have the best internet connection available, it's still going to have dropped frames. Until Sony releases a patch to fix this issue, the Portal isn't worth it.
When it works it’s amazing. One of the best handhelds ever but if the signal is not good, it is useless. Down right unusable. It all depends on the signal.
