For non-Bluetooth devices, you can hook up a power bank to the phone through the pass-through port and get no real battery drain while gaming. It was for DS games, so I’m still looking for a perfect vertical orientation controller. ‘Til then, a 3D-printed mount for my Switch JoyCon that also holds the phone between them has been really fantastic.
iPhone only at the moment, recommended to charge only through a PC and NOT a charging brick, all suspect. I like the price. Just bought the Razer Kishi Ultra and it is a beast. Backbone is on the way but features are hidden behind a pay wall, not ideal. Kishi Ultra is still the best imo, at $150 though.
iphone intense gamer here, lately I mostly play zzz and emulators from time to time and I own both the backbone and the g8, I would never switch to a bluetooth controller, even if the imput lag is resolved in ios18 I just love the plug and play form factor.
You can see how little people have an iPhone in the comments. Bluetooth support is horrible on iOS. I would never buy any controller without usb-c connection. It’s not just lag, it’s plain non-response, regular disconnections. And this is with official controllers from all brands. I honestly can’t believe he didn’t notice the lag.
The Netflix gaming service has surprisingly good games if you want to try it on iOS. The GTA remaster trilogy, Bloons, Spiritfarer, Kentucky Route Zero, Oxenfree and even Hades. I would like to see them dive deeper into the AA space to expand their library.
I didn't play all of them so I could be wrong but most if not all of those games (definitely gta sa, gta vc, world of goo) are just aquired licences by netflix with probably minor fixes for newest android / ios.
Controler looks nice but I still prefer the Gamesir G8. About the AAA paid games on the AppStore, the selection is quite limited and the most modern games (Death Stranding, RE, AC Mirage) look good but barely play at 30fps, I would really like to see older games like the BioShock trilogy, Borderlands, Darksiders, etc. Games that I really recommend on iOS are GRID Autosport, Journey, the SpongeBob games and Gunfire Reborn
Was fairly uninterested in this review since I am an Android user but I enjoyed hearing about the different mobile game services. I beat all the PS2 Grand Theft Auto games with Netflix games and my Galileo G8. Great experience!
Having an extra device to charge is a dealbreaker on its own for me - I often go through phases of needing a controller, and being able to pick it up and know it will work is a must. I get little time to play games, and i don't want to have that limited time spoiled by a dead controller.
My Nomad is supposed to come in the mail today! I’m super excited because although I played a lot of video games in past years, I’ve found that recently I don’t have the time or the will to sit down and commit to the time it takes to enjoy games on a console. I think getting back into mobile gaming is what I need to satisfy that craving for a console-like experience on the go. What will really sell it for me is if Fortnite ever comes back to iOS here in the US… yeah yeah I know everyone thinks Fortnite is for 12-year-olds, but I think it’s fun! In the meantime, I look forward to fine tuning my COD Mobile skills, emulating DS titles with Delta, and trying out a couple of other games that should be enhanced with the Scuf Nomad!
I was looking forward to your review since this was announced. Still trying to decide between this on my iPhone 15 Pro or something like an Anbernic RG35XX H or Retroid Pocket 4 mostly for playing up to PS1 games, potentially PS2
@@cabrinius7596 I saw that, but that design is not very good. I gave him some really good suggestions to improve the concept.... he just deleted my comments. So yah. I'll tell you, the best implementation at the moment is mine. I use the highest Pixel phone (root, custom rom) and have a 3D Printed case which docks the Razer JungleCat controllers. The controllers detach, and together they snap together very snugly into one pocket. The phone goes into another pocket. Setup takes seconds, comfort is better than all other options, since it makes 3D gaming in third person and first person much easier. So basically you can emulate upto x4 Resolution Wii, and anything lower even better. That's basically the cutoff point. There is a PS Vita emulator in works, and NSwitch is an option for low-end titles. But I would focus those and other systems like Windows XP, 360, PS3, WiiU, PS4, and Windows 7 games for a higher system. And for current games (Windows 10) I would prefer that on a desktop Gaming PC instead.
My problem with the backbone and the keshi v2 is the clicky buttons. Like this is meant as something for on the go gaming, so do you really want to be the awkward guy clicking away in the back seat or corner? i want to game without drawing attention to the fact i am. I have the same issue with a lot of hand held systems now.
I'd prefer the GameSir because of its wider compatibility and passthrough charging. If the Nomad was a USB-C controller I'd definitely choose that one, it feels a lot more premium and really well designed for shooters in particular.
And Gamesir just made this irrelevant with the G8+. It does everything this controller does and works on more platforms, including Switch so it can replace joycons
Pity iPhones aren't cheap even used. But I figure in the end android handhelds probably make more sense at that price point, even LG V60 with a controller. Hopefully, someone manage to exploit the Switch 2 so we can get Android and Linux running on it to make it a wonderful handheld with the newer hardware.
I have no idea how it compares to other mobile controllers, but the BSP-D8 has made me never want to go back to a non Hall Effect controller. I haven't worked on any Apple products since the Mac Classic was new, but I guess iPhone users deserve Hall Effect too.
I really wish we could get this quality with the portability of the razor kishi v1. I still have it and it's so good, the d pad is mushy but overall, it's the best in use and portability.
The fact that it doesn’t have a USB-C interface going right through the port is a big turn-off for me because latency is a critical thing in gaming, especially in smartphones where cloud gaming is maybe at high frame but sky-high latency or local native AAA gaming is at a low frame rate so the latency is also higher
Honestly, having to remove the case every time I want to use my backbone controller, makes me never want to use it. So having a case friendly controller is a definite plus for me. That design though probably lead to the decision to go Bluetooth only, that and if they went USB-C, only people with the newest iPhone would be able to use this without coming up with some clumsy adapters.
@@Zanpaa thanks for the suggestion, I did try this, but even with the smallest case I have, it still didn’t fit. I guessing you would need a really thin case in order for it to fit.
Kinda odd that it is Apple only considering it is Bluetooth. The Backbone at least makes sense since it physically connects via the usb c/lightning port. Although I am not sure how it works now with the new iphones having usb c. My big gripe with phone gaming is that there are no phones with the 16:9 ratio. Even thought they advertise large 6"+ screens they are all tall and skinny which is fine for scrolling and hand feel but really takes away from media consumption. Would like an older style phablet phone with a big 16:9 screen with new hardware.
It would be nice to have an Apple controller to establish a standard for developers and increase brand awareness about this topic as well. An Apple TV powered by an A17 (with a fan to push this chip at it's peak) paired with a convertible mobile controller (like the switch one) could be a tremendous combo.
I personally did not like the backbone on my Iphone 15 pro max .. it was far too tight and made me really worry about my usb-c port. So I may need to check this out
The RE games on the app store also have sales and have the exact same prices as Steam when they’re on sale, so you just missed that. Did you compare it to the Consoles while the steam sales were going on too? Because sales period are not always aligned.
Man... would they ever make a retro-focused version of this and put the dpad and buttons on top? One can dream. Add a MagSafe ring to the middle of this and you can rotate it for tate mode! I have a G8 and tate mode means connecting a wire with adapters, and I'm not a huge fan of its dpad.
Will never touch an apple device, but I appreciate handheld gaming and this kind of innovation is pretty neat. When I think of "mobile" gaming, typically I am thinking of just using a raw phone, which would be an abysmal experience for any game I would take the time to play. Things like this could change that opinion. Not likely to replace dedicated handhelds for a long time though.
Can you fit a MagSafe charger puck under the phone, and still fit in the controller? That would alleviate the battery drain since there's no passthrough charging
if I can't charge the phone while im using the controller it means every session is gonna be of like 2 - 3 hours of play and while it sounds ok you also have to wait like 1 hour to really charge your phone after is just not convenient. other than that this sounds like the new number 1 portable controller right now for things like steam link and remote play
LOL I see you have Hades on your phone via the Netflix free games. I’m actually using Dream as well as my profile pic for my Netflix account and I had to do a double-take to check how you got my phone for your video!!😂 Really wish this wasn’t iOS only. G8 still seems like the way to go. But this seems like a close second!
Russ you should test a game called Combat Master with all of these Android and IOS controller devices.. it's a CoD clone but the graphics on it look like high end PC and has a ton of PC style graphic options...
How are the ergonomics for playing emulated 2D games with the dpad and face buttons? I’m especially interested in games that use the dpad for movement and shoulder buttons for other commands, like SNES, GBA or DS games.
Thanks for this, I’m in the market for one of thee rights now as I’m done with the switch style sticks. I really hope you review the Nitro Deck Plus and the Razer Kishi Ultra too.
I have this controller and it’s missing the ability to play with touch games like Wuthering waves and Tarisland. They don’t even let you choose a game to add to the app. So it just sits on my desk until they change that. For now I just use my g8.
Waiting for a phone controller that’s focused on maximizing portability when not in use. It’s kinda awkward that every current phone controller has a wide gap even when there’s no phone in it. I need something that folds up small and compact enough to keep in my prison purse for maximum portability
Ross thank a for all the work. Quick Q: how noisy are the buttons? In looking for a good but silent alternative so I don’t bother my partner with my gaming

Even thought they advertise large 6"+ screens they are all tall and skinny which is fine for scrolling and hand feel but really takes away from media consumption. Would like an older style phablet phone with a big 16:9 screen with new hardware.
It's crazy that a Bluetooth controller doesn't support Android, total deal breaker for me
It would be nice to have an Apple controller to establish a standard for developers and increase brand awareness about this topic as well.
An Apple TV powered by an A17 (with a fan to push this chip at it's peak) paired with a convertible mobile controller (like the switch one) could be a tremendous combo.
man thanks u upgraded to 4k.
Can't buy something that is locking something like bluetooth to IOS only, thats insane. Luis Rossman would love reviewing this lmao.
Anyof these have a proper USB-C passthrough so I can connect it to Xreal glasses? I need video passthrough
I personally did not like the backbone on my Iphone 15 pro max .. it was far too tight and made me really worry about my usb-c port. So I may need to check this out
GOING RAW! LOL! Watched every RGC video since 10k followers and that’s the most off-color thing he’s ever said lol.
They need a dedicated Android one too
Nah android people don't need exclusives to feel good, we're all about sharing
Are the buttons noisy when pressed?
The RE games on the app store also have sales and have the exact same prices as Steam when they’re on sale, so you just missed that. Did you compare it to the Consoles while the steam sales were going on too? Because sales period are not always aligned.
Man... would they ever make a retro-focused version of this and put the dpad and buttons on top? One can dream. Add a MagSafe ring to the middle of this and you can rotate it for tate mode! I have a G8 and tate mode means connecting a wire with adapters, and I'm not a huge fan of its dpad.
First ten reviewer! Love the videos!
How would they think they can charge more than a normal console controller for this?
Which model iPhone do I need for decent gaming? Minimum.
I don't think I've ever seen a layout like that!? I'm so puzzled
Your Jawbreaker shirt made me smile. :)
Does it work with iPad as well as its stop ultimately the same OS?
LOL I see you have Hades on your phone via the Netflix free games. I’m actually using Dream as well as my profile pic for my Netflix account and I had to do a double-take to check how you got my phone for your video!!😂
Really wish this wasn’t iOS only.
I’m especially interested in games that use the dpad for movement and shoulder buttons for other commands, like SNES, GBA or DS games.
i designed a ipad joycon grip so i can play my games i ordered it on pcbway and am now waiting for it to come
Had this for twenty minutes and now it won’t turn back on or charge. Was cool while using it for those twenty minutes.
Hey @Retro Game Corp, will you do an updated review with the GameSir G8+ ?
How did I *not* know you could download games using your Netflix subscription?! Sonic Mania will be AWESOME for my kids - thanks!
All the AAA games have a similar model they only play on the latest iPhone s. The Inge generation, they didn't even play on the base model
Reminds me of how the stadia controller would've work with Bluetooth until they updated it
Thanks for this, I’m in the market for one of thee rights now as I’m done with the switch style sticks. I really hope you review the Nitro Deck Plus and the Razer Kishi Ultra too.
Commenting in the first hour to boost engagement metrics
I have this controller and it’s missing the ability to play with touch games like Wuthering waves and Tarisland. They don’t even let you choose a game to add to the app. So it just sits on my desk until they change that. For now I just use my g8.
Unfortunately not many controllers for tablets. I mean the majority of people choose gaming on an ipad instead of an iphone
Excellent review as always! Asus also released a phone controller like this, are young planning on reviewing it, Russ? Thank you!
I just want one of these makers to make a controller that lets me play with my phone vertical.
Waiting for a phone controller that’s focused on maximizing portability when not in use. It’s kinda awkward that every current phone controller has a wide gap even when there’s no phone in it.
I need something that folds up small and compact enough to keep in my prison purse for maximum portability
But then u sacrifice ergonomics
@@lllllll5990 I’m personally willing to sacrifice some ergo for portability
Does this support iPad Mini 6th Gen?
Is an Iphone SE 3rd generation strong enough?
10:00 is a jarring transition
does this work with the ipad mini?
Is there a controller that fits a 10.9" ipad air 5?
Ross thank a for all the work. Quick Q: how noisy are the buttons? In looking for a good but silent alternative so I don’t bother my partner with my gaming
Big fan. First time I noticed, you look a lot like Nayib Bukele, El Salvador President 😮😮😮😮
Forget the controller let’s talk about the Jawbreaker t shirt!
Isn’t the Gamesir g8 plus better for iPhone?
Can you compare this to the eternal progress “M-Con” controller prototype? I’m very excited for that product and how it’ll impact iPhone gaming!
