This is gold! This represents exactly all my questions I was having while starting in engineering. Hours and hours later after grinding materials, I don't even mind any more questioning. It is just plain dumb and an artificial barrier for hardcore players. And the Pharmaceutical mats are the worst, the spawn rate in Outbreak systems is so damn low I don't bother anymore. First address is the material trader for me in that case. Thx Mile for this entertaining content!
For mechanical components, just bring in your old toasters, lego toys, old car parts, treadmills... Anything works

There are some physics involved in the game. Originally, elite was geared towards space simulation. Then, thanks to pvp's constant nagging, it became more arcade like, over and over and over. A LOT of people just quit when engineering came out, for numerous reasons. #1 being the arcady way it works, #2, it immediately penalized larger ships by creating "meta", #3 for people with lives outside elite, it was another grind just to stay relevant, when in the early game, just getting a large ship was still hard to do, due to low payouts for practically everything.
If you don't like engineering now, you should have played when each grade, was a random roll, period. You still had to unlock G5, but, you could in theory god roll a G1 just as good as a G5, or, roll a G5 grade that was worse than a G1. Each roll still costs mats too.
So, now it is a mix of arcady mess, with simulation. I.E. math, with RPG grindy nonsense. Anyone that wants the game for RPG arcadey game play, is put off with every bit of sim they encounter, I.E. engineers showing you affects on modules, instead of doing the math for you to predict outcomes, and not expecting you to know anything about the module. Sim players are put off by the RPG grindyness, I.E. gathering mats to play the still gamble like game of upgrading to G5 instead of paying in hard earned credits. Dealing with tech brokers to "unlock" the ability to purchase things, instead of again, paying with hard earned credits.
The fact there is no lore in the game about salvage companies, even though there IS a universal insurance company, is just wild. You should be able to go to a ship breaking yard, where you can buy all these mats, instead of going to THREE SEPERATE traders, to trade materials, that can NOT co-exist on the same station for some reason, after "board hopping" for hours and hours and hours to gather them in the first place.
Should it be easy to get the best of everything in the game, no, but should it be so grindy that new players feel like they will never be able to achieve the results, no.
As far as displaying end speed results, its not great, because modules get shared among ships since they are not proprietary. So, your modified thrusters on your ASP, will not produce the same results as they do on a Dolphin. People, including me, will some time shelve a ship in favor of another, for another task, and instead of doing the engineer tour, will just borrow modules from the engineered ship we parked. So the engineering screen saying your ship will go X because Y, is not just a result limited to the upgrade of the module, and would ultimately cause a fuss to players who aren't thinking about that when they change their ship at some point, then go slower, or swap the module to a heaver ship, go slower, then ticket FDEV for a bug.
However, again, this was the SIM side of the game. If it was any other arcady game, you would buy a thruster upgrade, and your ship would go X speed, with Y performance handling upgrade, regardless of how much you changed the weight of it along the way.
The problem is that development people in FDev mentally are still in the 90s. This is just a complete misunderstanding. It's no surprise that this company has been on the verge of bankruptcy for a few years now, and is slowly selling off its intellectual property in order to stay afloat just a little bit longer (they recently sold off the WHOLE RollerCoaster Tycoon series to Atari as a settlement).
The Pharmaceutical Isolators always seemed less strange than the random lumps of unrefined elemental materials you need to upgrade stuff.

Mechanical Components? You'll know em when you see em! Just drive around aimlessly in space at 100x the speed of light until you see what might end up being one.
Just wait till you start any kind of ground stuff and in order to upgrade your suit and weapon, you have to acquire common goods like glue and motors to level up. But you can't go to a shop to buy them, you have to do missions to get some things, then go to the bartender to trade for those common goods, or just go to a base and basically steal everything.
I love how you broke the 3rd wall there. Just like the dead pool. Excellent. I love it!
At some point, the only viable answer to the "why" is "because developers".

@@Mile13Gaming to be honest its all ive ever needed in Elite, for deep range jumping would use my python, but when in the bubble, ASP everytime, even took it out to the Devil's Dancefloor lol, was quite a trip. I recommend seeing that, EESHORKS BA-A G2179.

Grind Dangerous, we make credit making easier but obsolete. Instead, you now have to waste your time in tedious activities gathering materials if RNG is kind to you.

Optimal multiplier, is the percent your speed will increase. The other thing, yea that does not really make a sense.
