Glad to be of service! You should be able to completely fill up your G4 raws in just a few hours using this method. The longest amount of time is the jumping to systems and orbital cruise to coordinates.
I used this method to fill up all my G4 raw mats. There are somethings that might be helpful; 1. The terrain quality graphics setting was at Ultra for me and that made it pretty hard to back away far enough for the trees/shards to disappear but the limpets still being in range (2x 3A controllers). So I turned down the graphics->quality setting "terrain quality" to the lowest value, then they would disappear at 600-800 meters and the limpets would continue to work. 2. There is not a strong need to go those exact coordinates on the planets. The blue coloring from the surface scanner shows areas where the shards/trees can be found and there are enough to just pick off whatever you find why flying over the surface. It's like exobiology if you have tried that. I don't go after single trees/shards, only multiples. I liked this method more as I don't like flying to specific coordinates in ED and this variation made it feel less grindy.
if you lower terrain quality that effects draw distance. turn it down, and you can use limpets with smaller range. that's what I had to do with my ASP.
Thanks man. Came back to ask this exact question. Tried the method last night but couldn’t get the crystal spires to “despawn” even at 1.1km. My graphics settings are maxed out
Very nice! I used this approach with flachettes a few weeks ago very effectively but i wasn't aware of the "back-off till you cant see the organics" element. I'll definitely note that for next time.
Great vid, though the edmaterials site appears down. I just used the info displayed in your vid. One additional suggestion: do this on the night side with night vision turned on. It's way easier spotting the trees, especially the large groups of them.
Thanks for this video Cmdr. - relatively new and trying to collect materials so I can engineer the FSD (baby steps :) ). I wish you could buy the materials, but.... Perhaps the best part of this is I'll get a Phantom out of this, albeit un-engineered - for now! Thanks again o7
I've heard that you don't have to log out, just fly high enough the nodes actually despawn instead of just disappearing from the screen, then fly back down and repeat.
Thank you for the video! Doing this right now, i see a small difference which i would like to note: Tree spawn out (despawn) is for me at 1km or 1,05 km, i think that might depend on hardware specs? Still works for me since 3A limpet controller have 1,25km range :D o7
Yes, the drop out distance is related to your graphics settings. If you are on ultra settings then you might have to fly out farther (or turn down your settings temporarily).
That's awesome, Thanks! Since you can only synthesize four limpets at a time, I'm wondering if I might try this in a cutter or something with more storage.
I dont get any materials if i shoot the brain trees, go out of render distance and start my collecter drones, they will simply come back and i get a massage that the collecting process failed.
This built could be improved upon. Why not use a multi limpet controller to get an extra slot for another cargo rack, a 6E cargo rack, a 5A fuel scoop and a 4G SRV module in a size 5 slot in addition to a Detailed Surface Scanner?
On the build, why Point Defense and Frame Shift Wake Scanner? I've never used either so I might be out of the loop as to their function, especially in regards to a material collector build.
I tried missiles first and found the blast radius didn't break off that many materials versus Flak. Flak seems to have a bigger area of effect in this case.
@@letstalkaboutdune Second to that limpet trick, using the flak was a brilliant idea, I always assumed it didn't effect stuff like that honestly. I am glad I was wrong.
Second try :) I fire the flaks, get on my SRV and all the Tellurium spikes are on the floor, why can't I pick them up with the collector from above? Any ideas?
Well, it didn't work for me. Got to the coordinates after at least half an hour, saw the site, fired the flaks, opened the cargo bay, doors, limpets out.....and nothing happened. Ended up doing it the old way with my RSV
The majority is Manganese in my experience. You can tell your limpets to ignore them, or better yet, trade them down or cross trade them before you go, because you know you'll be loading up on it.
I tried it once with my Asp Explorer and it didn't work very well. Limpets couldn't get the materials, which were on the ground when I landed and left the ship with the SRV. I'm wondering if the class of the AspX Sensors 5 versus 6 from Phantom or the blueprint I use, Light Weight, versus Long Range might be the reason.
any idea what settings make those material objects despawn? since I always end up in out of range to make the objects despawn about 1.1-1.3km, and in ur vids it's just 600m somehow
Wait.. Mine launchers? Why not Missile launchers? Or is that what you meant and my ears just didn't pick up on it.. But that IS what appeared on-screen (mine launcher). OK, I'm confused.
Missile launchers do work, but they don't have the area of effect needed to break off materials as well as the flak launchers do. Mines are confirmed to work by other CMDRs, but I haven't personally used them.
I'm not having any luck with that one either. I haven't used flak launchers before so thought maybe I'm doing it wrong but I let go when it goes red so 🤷♂
@@hjwtest7050 Yup, I bought some regular ones and it works great. I did one reset to desktop to get the trees to regen materials and filled up on Selenium before I had collected everything.

braintrees start disapering at 700 meters for me. maybe i was lucky but i found two major woods next to each other and just farmed the f out of that. thanks for sharing!
this dont work for me xd "plants" despawn when im out of range with limpet controller, for me they despawn at 1,350 km when on ur vid its about 600m how? lowering settings will help? edit: Yep lowering settings helped XD
So I was trying this at HIP 36601 on the Crystals, and I couldn't seem to get any of the clusters to crack, I had to get in my SRV... which apparently brining the scorpion was a mistake. Neither the flak nor does the Surge Repeater seem to break the crystals, and I have to use the Aculeus Launcher? Am I missing something here, or is this normal for the crystals? Does the flak method only work on the trees? EDIT: ... I am a dumbass, I need to actually drive around to see the cluster and shoot it! But I still can't seem to get the flak to do it? EDIT EDIT: .... ._. okay yeah, its working I was just a dumb dumb, thankie for the guide.
@@GohanSama you wont actually see the crystals break off the only way you'll know is when the limpets dart off to go retreieve. I usually fire at around 300m a few shots and then back away to around 600m so the limpets wont break as often.
@@dressari3732 You are correct. My mistake was that I expected some sort of feedback from the shot. Also, with the first sets of shots I was very unlucky and I ended up destroying the materials, so my limpets didn't react. After reload I shot only 1 flak and then sent out limpets and it worked.
Tried this with meta alloy, aspx, xbox series x…. Failed miserably. Limpets just kept hitting the planet or i was “too far” to trigger them picking up. ANY SUGGESTIONS??

Excellent video CMDR. Well done! -Mechan
Thank you, CMDR!
IIRC a recent update improved on the limpet AI making this a possibility. Props for presenting the method in a concise guide!
Thanks!
This video needs more spotlight. I've been here since Elite existed and I had no idea about that lil trick with the limpets. Game changer.
Yeah, I have been collecting raw materials for days straight in a SRV, one by one, and just now that I discovered this video

Mind literally blown. Never thought of this one.

if you lower terrain quality that effects draw distance. turn it down, and you can use limpets with smaller range. that's what I had to do with my ASP.
plus you can sit closer so limpets wont travel as far

New ED tutorial-maker? Subbed.
Thank you, you, beautiful, wonderful human being for showing me this method
The first time I saw a video of this, dude used frag cannons. More ammo than the flak and no need to worry about timing.
Wow this video is amazing. I was brought here from Reddit. a commentor left the link when I had issues with the SRV. Amazing.
Same lmao 🤣
Dude, thank you for this.
i do recommend keeping a bay, for when the limpets go after certain materials that cause their deaths
Niice i will try this out. Also this was rly easy to info to absorb. Alot of elite guides are not :)

nicely done!
I gave this a go earlier. It's very satisfying.
GOT IT!!! The trick is to "jiggle" the altitude after you send in the collector limpets
Thank you !
Thanks. Needing to collect all that stuff bit by bit was one reason that threw me out of the game. I think i will give it a shot.

Amazing, it works beautifully. Does it also work with the crystal forests for the other g4 mats?

It's a brilliant use for something so useless like mines, did you test on empty minner's asteroid field?.

Because its necessary for engineering. Point defence for guardian stuff.

I’m guessing this doesn’t work for the console Legacy version of the game.
