    I drove OTR for 23 years. Here is some things to consider next time. First you figured out you had to take a 10 hour break. You knew there was overnight parking where you were picking up. This is what I would have done. I would have gone there got the load and stayed at the shipper for my 10. Might have been easier to get all info when more people are around. Just something to think about for next time. Be safe out there.

    I will never forget the time on I-68 near sliding hill MD, snowing at the time which was nearing midnight. As I start climbing one of the larger inclines on the route and see a bright orange light at the peek of the hill. As I approach it comes into view that there's a semi on the side of the road, cabin on fire with hood popped off and no one around to been seen. Dont have a clue what happened but I regret to this day for not stopping...

    Ugh. Playing detective at unfamiliar shippers and receivers is one of the worst things about trucking. I think the only thing that I find more stressful and annoying is trying to find overnight parking. Good job working it all out, Dave and Billie Jo! That's trucking!

  • @redleader
    @redleader 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I teach backing. Couple things that will help. 1. stop whipping the steering wheel left and right ..left and right. small, gentle inputs. LIke landing a 747.
    2. Turn the wheel the most when you are STOPPED. Once you let off the brake and begin moving bakwrds you loose ground. Does that make sense? You eat up way too much ground/distance before the trailer can react. So TURN THE WHEEL while you are stopped. Do it for each trun when backing.
    Otherwise looks good.

  • @Simple_Worship_Guitar
    @Simple_Worship_Guitar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    That is definitely trucking for those who are considering getting into trucking. Have to go out at 7am from your home, dispatch sends you out at 7am knowing that you are going to leave home, drive 80 miles, and have to take a 10 hour break…And then after you’ve spent all day away from home (with no pay), then you get there, and nobody is around. So leave home, and spend a day and a half away from home (for free), and then finally get going. Trucking is the big time waster. Sad but true.

    A lot of times you can't rely on dispatch for sh*t! You have to figure out things on your own, and you're absolutely right about being a detective, you gotta figure things out and resolve issues on your own without any help from dispatch. Been there,done that plenty of times.

    Oh the stories I could tell of the dispatch screwups over my 16 year long haul driving career and most of it as a solo. If I could give one piece of advice to every driver out there, it would be, take care of your back/spine and find a good chiropractor and go regularly. I am disabled because trucking messed my back up bad and when I started driving in 1997, I didn’t know any better. Now I’m homeless because nobody can live on Social Security Disability.
    I will always be a trucker in my heart. Be safe out there.

    Happy Holidays Dave and Billie Jo.
    Welcome back to the big rig Dave. Had an idea for a video for you.
    When you left trucking for camping, you were a solo driver. Then you came back to trucking and CFI with a girlfriend/co-driver.
    I think the question on most of our minds are how did you get to this point?
    As a vlogger, you basically put your trucking life out there for all of us to see. Maybe you can do a video on: (1) how you came to the decision to come back to OTR trucking; (2) how you and Billie Jo met; (3) are you driving anymore, or are you just along for the ride since you seem to be in the passenger seat all the time.
    Anyway, glad to see you back in the Big rig. Be safe out there.

      I wondered the same thing. Never see him driving, and they shut down for the night.

      I think i remmeber him saying their hours reset ( meaning both him and hers?) cause i wondered the same thing. I think it kinda does make a bit of sense to film when she drives cause its just easier but at tthe same time i have no idea.

      @@B2Ttrolling but she could always film him 🤔. I know he said she has experience, and you can see that from her driving ability, but she left the road for awhile, maybe CFI put her to do a refresher course.

      @@truckingwithj7202 I’ve thought about that too. Maybe she just doesn’t wanna film? Idk again we could think of all the different reasonings 😂😂😂 I hope he just replies at this point

    You should get a drone. Then you can look for trailers from your truck.

    this is why i stopped pulling a box trailer. i drove for over 22 years and pulled 2 boxes. first one was ok. the 2nd one i had to drop and hook in Joplin Mo at 7 am and go to Austin tx. by 10 am the next day. NO TROUBLE right. well the load wasn't there so i was told to wait and at 1 am it showed up. and they still wanted me to be in Austin by 10 am. 550 miles. after being up all day and night waiting on it i drove like hell and made it. then they told me i had to help unload. i told them nope i have been awake 28 hours they can unload it . i had to unhook and wait. but about the time i laid down they would come make me move it to another door. i would no more than get parked then they would come make me move to another door. the 3rd time i saw that it was one large open bay they was just fucking with me. when i hooked on to it i pulled out closed the doors and my next stop was at our Houston yard. and i went back to pulling tankers

    Welcome to Western NY! Typical lake effect for this area. I live 2 hours away and we had nothing. But I had to bobtail last year from Niagara Falls to Hamburg and it sucked!!
