  • Can you teach an old Yu-Gi-Oh deck new tricks? In this video, we take on the challenge of reviving classic Yu-Gi-Oh starter decks from over a decade ago by upgrading them with modern, powerful staple cards. Our goal is to transform these old school decks into competitive powerhouses! Once our decks are upgraded, we'll put them to the test in an epic showdown to see which upgraded deck reigns supreme.

*So maybe new Yu-Gi-Oh cards and old Yu-Gi-Oh cards don't exactly play as nicely together as you'd think. But we still had a lot of fun with this duel! Which do you prefer to play: modern or classic Yu-Gi-Oh?* 🤔🤔

I like the idea a lot! But I think you should limit what you add in to just hand traps, draw power, and the newer generic trap/spells. The newer monsters feel like they will just dominate the field too much for the older ones to do anything.

If you could, I'd like to see more mid age cards. Like Meklord or blackwing decks. It's not for anime reasons, but I'm curious to see decks where they started to add archetye specific negates. Niche battle traps, conditional searchers. Basically the power creep wasn't too far along but just enough that you weren't relying on the heart of the cards every turn. Maybe just at the end.

The yugi reloaded was my first structure deck when i started playing in late 2016. It's been changed up with pretty bad cards since I don't really spend money on the tcg, but this nonetheless reminded me of swapping my structure decks cards out for other things. I think i put crystrons in it, which is fun. It's by no means competitive even for 2013 standards, but I'm not entering tournaments or playing seriously

Maybe try a battle box approach with this idea.
If you made a small number ( 12 maybe ) of deck cores of goat format ( to start ) decks with 20-25 cards then draft the more modern cards after with more variety ( no more than 2 of any card ) this has potential for some good videos.
Kind of like a more customized version of those speed dual boxes you guys have done in the past. You could even do it more traditional draft style or even shuffle all the cards together and make separate piles. Each time you pick, it would be from one face down pile. Then the next player would do the same from whichever pile they choose. 4-6 of you ( if you can manage it ) with double elimination, sounds like a video to me.
Just some food for thought. Obviously I have no idea what you have in the pipeline.

I personally would have it be a challenge of adding a minimum of 5 cards, released after a certain deck, to the previously mentioned deck

    • @LiMe251
      @LiMe251 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Figured I'd add an example, so say someone's challenge involves the OG starter deck Yugi, it would be required to switch mystical elf, feral imp, "winged dragon, guardian of the fortress #1", ultimate offering, and castle walls for Fallen of albaz, Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End, Ash Blossom, "A" Cell breeding device, "A" cell incubator, but the challenge would be to add and change cards in order to make it functional.

At 15:00, pretty sure Alec is thinking of Fiendish Chain, which prevents the monster from attacking AND negates their effects. Also, love the video idea! I used to do this when I first got back into YuGiOh about 4 years ago. I slowly modernized my Rise of the Sea Emperor structure deck from 2013 until it looked completely different after a while. Also did this with the Blue-Eyes and Cyber Dragon structure decks. It was nice to naturally progress to modern standards while I learned about the new summoning mechanics

Maybe you can try this thought experiment with old meta decks given new tools to play with. And when I mean old, I mean like Edison Format Old or GOAT Format old not T.O.S.S. Format Old. Just pick an era of Yugioh, choose 2 Meta decks of that time and add modern staples to those decks.

I do this with a friend. We have a custom meta : we play with a mix of old and new rules (1 field for two players (old) but first player don't draw (new)), use a maximum of 1 of, 46 cards minimum, no XYZ and Links, no archetypes after GX (or maybe shitty ones), ban too unfair/strong cards, and cards have to follow the theme in term of artworks (a maximum as you can). For me it's the best of the two worlds : you have variety, more combos and impressive plays than oldschool YuGi and no 10 minutes solo combos that use half of the deck and unbreakable board like newschool ! :D

This was a fun experiment which asks to be repeated but modern deckbuilding doesn't seem to apply to old decks.
Five Normal summons are just not enough for a forty-card deck of that time, you'd need at least twice that to make consistent plays since the rest of your deck is not as accessible as it is in modern decks.
So, new tricks the old decks didn't learn

I feel like if you added the more recent support like Illusion of Chaos, Timaeus United Dragon, Magicians’ Souls, Magician’s Rod, Soul Servant, Eternal Soul, Dark Magic Circle, and fusions, XYZ, or Links related to the core cards of the deck like Dark Magician the Dragon Knight they might perform better. Watching these updated decks play felt less like seeing the Yugi Vs Kaiba decks go at it and more like decks built around recent staples with a splash of old magic and trap cards like Trap Hole and Spell Binding Circle. I’d love to see a video aimed at new players who want to pick up those old decks but don’t know what new cards to add of their current support to beef it up. Maybe even a rough idea of how much it would cost a new player who wanted to beef up those old decks like “you’ll probably need x3 Soul Servants which got a recent reprint so those are $10 a pop and you’ll want 3.” I’ve been showing your videos to friends who recently got into Yugioh at the card shop or are recently returning and they’ve found the videos entertaining and insightful.

    The science of Yugioh:
Biology: A wolf fucked a tank. Now ya got wolf tank.
Environmental Studies: The darkness makes my spells work better! Also, erupting volcanos make hot things stronger but have no effect on anything else.
Metaphysics: Ghosts are just a thing bro..also time travel is easy and ALWAYS works in your favor.
Energy: No need to panic..just stack two big things on each other and weve made a Dyson Sphere!
Chemistry: Melt 99 thieves into a jewelry mold and promise your soul to a demon so you can have superpowers!
Physics: My catapult turtle launches my dragon champion at your castle of illusions, destroying its levitation ring and causing it to crash on your own monsters once my light swords disapate; no longer keeping it elevated but still keeping your monsters trapped beneath until it falls.

new idea ALPHA and OMEGA duels. The duel uses the 4 latest structure decks and the first 4 structure decks. The duel is a 4 way tournament where a dice roll decides who gets the first draft from the newest structure decks and the person who drafts last gets to then draft first from the older structure decks. Then to make the duel spicy each player then gets to pick a total of 10 cards of any kind to boost up their deck. the final deck will be made of all the cards they chose making for an awesome duel.

I eventually do this with every deck.
I have every yugioh structure and starter deck but because a lot of the earlier ones I don’t have second copies I don’t use them often so just sleeved in their box. Kudos to y’all

@@TeamAPS you guys are awesome especially with going back and spending the money opening the old boxes. Keep it up because this material is so much fun especially when you do three of challenges!

yall maybe shouldve explained if you only added the new cards or if you guys swapped out some of the old weak cards for the new staples...i just thought about that when i saw alex deck after he shuffled it and it looked like a 60+ cards stack :D but as always pretty creative and entertaining video

So funny y'all did this...this is basically what I do anyway. Still wanna use my favorite cards from back in the day, but I add a few newer card combos to try and stay a lil current.😅🤦🏿‍♂️

This was an interesting thought experiment. I've seen similar results when people tried to combine formats - funny enough, the reason many good cards today are good is due to a mix of many different factors. Opening board breakers and hand traps here seems like more of a brick than anything if your opponent's best play is a yomi ship pass.
I feel like it would be cool to try this again in different ways. Maybe take these old decks and use newer cards to support them - i.e maybe you can choose half of them and put in one modern card each that supports it, like magicians' souls for DM or trap trick for sakuretsu armor

What a intense dual that was 😂

Dark ruler no more is kinda useless unless your up against a big board of negates which the old decks can't really put up. 😅

Here's an idea to take this a step further that I've been trying out myself: Can you make modern versions of each structure deck with either the same wincon or that keep to a similar spirit?
For example, I'm trying to make a semi-decent Dragon's Roar "retrain" that mills dragons via Dragonlink and then OTKs with Red-eyes darkness dragon. Also, works well with Black Dragon Sword.

Ooh this sounds difficult. 🤔 But it's a really cool idea!

New cards completely dwarf older ones in power.
Pot of Greed, Graceful Charity, IO and Painful Choise: Well that was a fucking lie.

If you do this again I'd also enjoy an upgrade rule. for instance if playing yugi, you could upgrade the gaia and curse of dragon to a more modern variant namesake.
