    Well, this info, even though it was posted 2 years ago, is certainly still pertinent for those of us creating listings, so that we don't make glaring mistakes from ignorance and is just as important to the buyer, so they don't get misled; whether it is purposefully done or done out of ignorance on the part of the seller. Lovely stuff and well presented. Thank you for sharing the results of your research so generously. A big thumbs up.

    Wonderful information!! Just the best, most in-depth, astute overview of eras, history of design and things to look out for. I have learned more from watching your last 3 videos than I have in 3 years of researching this myself.
    Couple things:
    Gilt, or gilded just means it's something (incl. glass) covered with gold of ~some~ purity and any thickness.
    Vermeil (pron. vair-MAY) is a French word that in America, indicates at least 10k gold over .925 silver. At at least 2? microns thick, (don't quote me on the microns) setting it above any other plated or filled work.
    My background is in Art History. I've been slogging through the internet for a while now trying to sort out the nonsense from reality of costume jewelry. Contradictory blogs, and copy/pasted bad "facts" are abundant - while true research is almost impossible - in the consumerweb era we're in now.
    You, my friend, are a breath of fresh, informative and well-delivered air.
    I, for one, am loving your content.
    Keep it up, please.

    • @OlivesVintageMarket
      @OlivesVintageMarket  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so very much! I am forever mispronouncing vermeil. I even know the correct way to pronounce it now and still say in a southern drawl "Ver-Meal", lol. Its so bad. ~~ So I am not even sure what I said about gilt in this video, but now I have a question. I know that there are lots gilt items, but does it mean gold colored or would it have some gold content in it?

    • @Crossword131
      @Crossword131 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OlivesVintageMarket Okay, so all vermeil is gilt (or gilded) but not all gilt is vermeil. Both are gold covered, one much thicker than the other.
      Gilded or gilt items (by strict definition) must be all or partly covered with real gold. Normally leaf. I'm fairly (could be wrong) sure there's no thickness numeric attached to the term "gilded." I think just a whisper thin amount is enough to qualify. Some example I think of are the police chief's or D.A.'s door, or the side of a firetruck. That gold lettering on glass (or vehicle paint) is gilded work. Just a little bit of gum adhesive, carefully applied within the letter shapes, let to dry for a bit, then gently covered with a tissue-thin piece of gold leaf, then that gets the flakes brushed off, sits for a bit, and is then burnished (rubbed) to the right shine level.
      But if you're asking regarding descriptions you see online, I would hesitate to believe, out of hand, someone's assertion that the item is truly gilded. On the other hand, I would take it at face value if the item were Meissen, Sèvres, or Havilland porcelain, Lalique or Tiffany crystal or Gorham silver.
      Did that cover what you were asking? I'm more than happy to elaborate if I know something.
      You've given me so many answers.

    • @OlivesVintageMarket
      @OlivesVintageMarket  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Crossword131 that was so thorough!! Thank you. My question though is I know vermeil has actual karat gold in it, such as 24k over sterling, but does gilt have to be a karat gold such as 14k or 12k, or can it just qualify if it is a gold tone without any actual gold in it.
      When my father and I use to sell antiques many years ago we sold many many gilt frames gorgeous things that were actually covered with 24k gold leaf. I know it was just a whiff of gold but it was actual gold, but now many people call the new frames gold gilt but it is just a gold paint with metallic flecks and not gold. So I just do not know if gilt has to contain gold or just a gold color.
      Oh man I sure can make things confusing, lol.

    • @Crossword131
      @Crossword131 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OlivesVintageMarket Okay, I would say that chances are the old frames you're talking about were originally leafed in 18 or 24k gold, and that gilding, by definition, required real gold, but the karat could be as low as 6k.
      Nowadays, though, there's every likelihood that the frames may have been touched up by non-gold modern counterparts. Rub n buff, imitation gold leaf and gold paint are all frequently used to refresh old leaf (gilding.) But that the original frames would be fully or partially covered in gold leaf, likely higher than 14k , 18 & 24 k being most common.
      As to modern created frames - almost no chance of real gold being used or harmed in the process of manufacture.
      Is that the answer you needed? Please feel free to ask me for specifics I might have missed.

    I just started collecting brooches and one arrived today with one of the stones out. What kind of glue should I use to glue it back? I appreciate all help and knowledge. Thank you

    • @OlivesVintageMarket
      @OlivesVintageMarket  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always suggest the Super Gel Gorilla Glue. Just a small dot of it will hold your stone in and not make it yellow. Make sure the foil backing is still on it, because if it is not the glue will show through the back of the stone and will look bad no matter the glue you use.

    Just getting into jewelry and really appreciate all your tips. Sometimes, especially on EBay people just copy whatever someone else says in a listing without doing any of this own research. Have found many errors and I’m by no means well educated in jewelry or anything else actually ;) will definitely be putting all these videos in a save file for future reference.

    Hi Kacie, this is so helpful thank you! Do you know anything about the brooch you show at 4:42, I have the exact one and I'm trying to identify it!

    • @OlivesVintageMarket
      @OlivesVintageMarket  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am so sorry I missed this. I haven't seen anyone's comments for a while now. But, yes, this was 1960s unbranded jewelry. I have many similar styles with these whispy-like (for lack of a better term) tentacles. They were mass-produced, but the company was not mentioned. Think 1960s paparazzi, lol. In 60 years a lot of that will probably be trying to be identified because it is a mass-produced line with no signatures. I hope that makes sense.
