Good review Tom, it sounds like Renault have done a good job. You posted the charging power rates but I think you missed a trick in not taking 30 seconds to drive home now well judged 22kW AC and 130kW DC is. The 22kW AC capability takes full advantage of a lot of car park chargers, while most other manufacturers seem to think 11kW is good enough.
I had a Zoe ZE40, couldn't fault it's utility but it was very dull. This is the best looking mid sized EV I've seen and not too large. Please Renault make a convertible.
Actually, I wonder why BMW hasn't yet offered the MINI Electric as a convertible...? Unless it's to do with the usual extra bracing a convertible needs over the roof version taking up what would be the battery space, maybe...? It's just another ICE-to-EV conversion, surely... 🤔
Great review and like the thought of this myself, although just tried to spec one up on the Renault site and it seems even the Launch Edition doesn't have the 12" infotainment screen 🤔 just the 9", not the end of the world though.
I love my Kona 64kw ultimate model, been waiting and watching for this Megane reviewer to give his opinion. It looks to be a great car overalls, my only concern is no pull down rear seat rest , so no rear cup holders? The boot is big but too deep? They could have fitted a riser as in other similar cars to make it easier to get stuff in and out? Love the efficiency of the electric motor, very Kona-like. As in: I can confidently drive from Southend on sea, all the way to Buckfastleigh in Devon on one home charge’ the reviewer didn’t say if the car comes with a granny charger? Which is great to have if your needing to stop overnight where you can get almost a full charge up with a granny plugged-in for the return trip? But what a great looking car, love that it has Google say nab and is a lot lighter than others in the same segment. Great review, many thanks..👍
Have now seen 3 reviews of this, the big issue is not the efficiency, range or technical capabilities: it’s the back seating! All of the 3 reviewers have described the bad squab , flat seat, very minimal legroom. Why didn’t Renault reduce the load bay by a few litres to enhance the rear seat space, and Give more supportive seating ? It’s a deal breaker if you have relatives all above 6 foot!
We have two small children. I would prefer even less legroom a few more litres in the load bay. For strollers and stuff. It’s all about preference. (We ordered one btw)
The infotainment is incredible for the class, definitely blows the ID.3 out of the water, which is even worse for that since the ID.3 relies on the infotainment for literally everything while this has shortcut buttons.
@@shroomyesc Yes it's the same system but with a smaller screen. They have removed/reduced quite a bit on the UK spec (on all Renault's) to make up for the extra costs Brexit has caused. It's just a shame they don't give us the option to pay more for the spec we want.
Great ! physical buttons for climate control, a dedicated display for the driver. But the big wheels make it heavier, less efficient, not to mention the cost of purchase of big tyres.
do you only have 1 phase power at home in england ? because in denmark 22kw AC charge can charge the car in 3 hour instead of the 9+ hours you say in the video ?
Most home charging in DK is limited to 16 Amp on 3 phases = 11 kw. Public chargers are often 22 kw, which matches the std 22 kw on board charger in the vehicle.
Two things to mention: Air conditioning is in front (not in passenger area) and connected to the battery/motor temperature control - so no place for frunc (get charging points with cable fitted...😉) In case of fire there is an easy access to the battery interior under the back seat (to fill it with water🚒) - only Renault got this...
IF this starts from £35k it'll be too expensive. That'll get you the smaller battery, the less powerful motor, the smaller infotainment screen and the smaller wheels. I suspect the model shown here will be mid 40's at least, which is just too expensive
So, I was excited about this car. Then today we found out that the UK will be getting a 9'' screen not a 12'' screen. No leather seats. No Harmon Kardon sound system unless you get one of only 300 launch edition cars. No heat pump. No digital rear view mirror. Forget this review and every other one you have drooled over everyone. This is not the car we will be seeing in the UK. We get a pale downgraded imitation.
It's this just based off the current uk car build website? I assumed these options would be updated when the prices are finalised. The French site allows you to spec it much closer to what I'd want. Agree, if we don't get what's on offer to Europe then I'm not interested
Your exactly right got my iconic yesterday no electric massage seats or self parking or wooden door strips very disappointed I’m going to try to reject the car on Monday
I went out this weekend determined to buy an EV. No particular make in mind, 35k to spend. After 2 days and many dealerships, I gave up. They are either unobtainable until 2023, boring to look at (nearly all E SUVs look the same), too expensive or have some design flaw. This looks nice, but it will be too expensive and not available for ages. Stick with my diesel pickup another year.
If you're looking for a non-SUV, but still practical EV - which, as far as I know can be had this year - then have you looked at the MG5 Estate? Great value for the range on offer, plus a 7 year warranty. Admittedly, looks a bit like a 1990s Passat Estate - not, in itself, an un-attractive car - but there's a more svelte facelifted one due out later in the year.
A VW dealer told me that they have a 12 month wait on the id3 so the Megan could clean up. The MG4 and the GWM ora could be budget alternatives when they finally arrive. 2023 should bring a battery astra into the mix looking forward to non SUV's. Owning an SUV cured me of that affliction. An efficient hatchback is the sweet spot for me.
Very interested in this car. But I fear it will be too expensive. £35,000 - that's bound to be the 40Kwh version. Let's be real, no-one spending that kind of money is remotely interested in that version. The range is just too small (186miles, but real world probably sub 130). ID3 and Cupra Born have bigger ranges for the money (although still falls short in my book). As does Kia E-Niro/Niro EV, as does Hyundia Kona, as does MG ZS EV. The new Smart #1 looks to be a nice car too, similar price point too apparently and yes a bigger range. It's not got a huge boot, but its bigger than some in this price range. I really hope it's cheaper than I suspect, but I really think to get the 60Kwh with most of the toys you'll be £40,000+ and then you're in EV6 and Ionic 5 territory.
@@jaz4280 yeah that would be a mistake I think. You're firmly in the EV6 and Ionic 5 and even Tesla camp..... that is strong competition. Anyway that would be way out of my range.
Best thing of its type/size on the market just now it seems. And I swore blind back in 2003 I would never, ever buy another Renault..based on my experience with the UK dealer's response to a problem on my new Megane of the day, along with the advice of my local AA man who I came to know quite well - 5 times in 6 months. Given the years that have passed, along with Renault's vast improvement and the fact that Renault dealers seem to be very different in Ireland where I now live...I'd buy this (I never thought I'd say that) over any of the alternatives who have suddenly been left quite a bit behind. Amazing to think too that the informed opinion is that VW should look to Renault for how to build a quality interior on their ev's; they don't have to be 'flimsy and poor' - not my words but those of friends who have id3's. Things move on very quickly. EV's still too expensive though, no matter how good.
3 other points of interest not mentioned. Door handles recessed, pop out and pull. Not a fan personally. Tiny boot release button. Very large step when back seats down.
Belt line is too high so it doesn't have interior feeling of spaciousness which isn't helped by the dark interior. I almost wish most cars presented were of a lighter color to see the interior details better.
Feeling very frustrated that it seems like it will be many more months before we can see and drive a Megane E-Tech in the UK. Really looks to be very competitive if you can live with the space limitations. The new Nissan/Renault EV platform bodes well for future models which I guess will include the next generation Leaf.
I think you are the best beside Alex on Autos and Autogefuehl, but my wish is that you like Alex should be a little more focused on the total lifecost and driving comfort of a car, and not only range and charging time that most people dont need. Most batteries are the same and much fast charging will have a price after some years.
Every Renault I’ve ever had (3) has had electrical issues, I won’t get fooled again, especially when electrical issues would pretty much stop you dead.
Not sure why they couldn't have made the car a little bit taller, have better ground clearance and much better rear space. The rear seating experience in EV's is pretty shocking and for the money you're paying it's not acceptable.
Curious what those proper measured kWh/100 figures are, when it would be so efficient. For price point the cheap price is without CCS and only 40kWh. And it looks really cramped. ID is really more spacious.
It all depends what speed you were doing and for how long as well as if the car was driven from cold and air con heating / cooling was on. An EV is efficient after the car has warmed up or cooled the interior as you notice the % of battery drop by 2 to 3% very quickly. No one in the UK has done a back to back test against the Cupra Born and Telsa model 3. A roads at 50 or 60, motorways at 70 and city driving at 30 for 100 miles on all three roads. Doing this in winter would be useful. This would give cost compared to value for money and REAL world range and efficiency with NO pre-heating the interior.
Surely we'll get to a point with efficiency where governments mandate a range average with non-compliance penalties like we see with CO2 emissions now.

You posted the charging power rates but I think you missed a trick in not taking 30 seconds to drive home now well judged 22kW AC and 130kW DC is. The 22kW AC capability takes full advantage of a lot of car park chargers, while most other manufacturers seem to think 11kW is good enough.
Dear Tom, another great review, another month where I have no idea when I might be able to buy one! Do you know?
When is this car coming out and how much!
I am keeping an eye on it but I am still holding on for the ORA Cat similar size but cheaper. Any word on the Cat?
Looks like Renault have learnt a lot from the Zoe. Averaging over 4 mi/kWh for non eco driving is a great achievement for.
How many miles and what terrain was that 4mi/kWh achieved over?
Great review and like the thought of this myself, although just tried to spec one up on the Renault site and it seems even the Launch Edition doesn't have the 12" infotainment screen 🤔 just the 9", not the end of the world though.
Thanks , such a good review.
9:08 - Nice how you incorporated that squished Animal (:
Several people mention difficulty in reversing due to narrow rear view. Doesn't anyone use wing mirrors for reversing?
Megane E tech has a reversing camera
Did the droplinks survive the test drive?
Have now seen 3 reviews of this, the big issue is not the efficiency, range or technical capabilities: it’s the back seating! All of the 3 reviewers have described the bad squab , flat seat, very minimal legroom. Why didn’t Renault reduce the load bay by a few litres to enhance the rear seat space, and Give more supportive seating ? It’s a deal breaker if you have relatives all above 6 foot!
We have two small children. I would prefer even less legroom a few more litres in the load bay. For strollers and stuff. It’s all about preference. (We ordered one btw)
My son has one on order...... I may have to upgrade from our Zoe now..... 😀🚙
The infotainment is incredible for the class, definitely blows the ID.3 out of the water, which is even worse for that since the ID.3 relies on the infotainment for literally everything while this has shortcut buttons.
Just a shame the UK won't be getting it. Only the 9" screen for us.. A lot has been removed from the UK spec.
@@seven-xg9wk At least it still has the android system right?
@@shroomyesc Yes it's the same system but with a smaller screen. They have removed/reduced quite a bit on the UK spec (on all Renault's) to make up for the extra costs Brexit has caused. It's just a shame they don't give us the option to pay more for the spec we want.
Great ! physical buttons for climate control, a dedicated display for the driver. But the big wheels make it heavier, less efficient, not to mention the cost of purchase of big tyres.
excellent intro!
Love the high frame rate
will this car be available in the US?
The Megan-E will be my next car,, 🥰
do you only have 1 phase power at home in england ? because in denmark 22kw AC charge can charge the car in 3 hour instead of the 9+ hours you say in the video ?
Most home charging in DK is limited to 16 Amp on 3 phases = 11 kw.
Public chargers are often 22 kw, which matches the std 22 kw on board charger in the vehicle.
Remember how we used to laugh at the Allegro's steering wheel?
A wonderful rEView of what looks like a superb EV
UK spec..we only get a 9 inch screen! And no full leather seats as per all the promo videos and early reviews either.
Two things to mention:
Air conditioning is in front (not in passenger area) and connected to the battery/motor temperature control - so no place for frunc (get charging points with cable fitted...😉)
In case of fire there is an easy access to the battery interior under the back seat (to fill it with water🚒) - only Renault got this...
Will it be the favourite that the Zoe was or will it be the Ariya that nobody can buy?
IF this starts from £35k it'll be too expensive. That'll get you the smaller battery, the less powerful motor, the smaller infotainment screen and the smaller wheels. I suspect the model shown here will be mid 40's at least, which is just too expensive
yes but u can get the 60 KW with 130HP and smaller wheels too soon
You forgot the towing of up to 1500 kg. That is the reason I ordered that instead of the ID.3
Another BIG plus voor this Megane is that it can carry a trailer (up to 900 kgs).
That's completely true, its not enough to be electric, you must also be efficient, spot on !! :-)
It might be spot on but there’s only minor marginal gains that can be made until new battery technologies come in.
@@AlanTov as today you find already cars that take double a much energy than others, it sounds not minor to me....
Thanks. Very informative, except that miles, etc, don’t mean anything to me.
I honestly thought the new Megane was turned to a crossover, until I saw Tom next to it. It’s small!
I wish the rear space wasn’t quite so compromised.. clearly better than competitors but even small families need space
Great review, however you didn't mention the 0-60 figures!
Yes he did. 0-60 in 7.5 s
Nope, 0-62 in 7.5
Very interested in this car.
It will be more like near 50.000 with all the toyes.
You will get a decent spec 60kwh version of this for £35 or 36k. That’s what the main competitor id3 58kwh is. And after all this is a Renault.
@@AlanTov Well if that's the case it might be of interest to me. I can live without some of the toys.
@@jaz4280 yeah that would be a mistake I think. You're firmly in the EV6 and Ionic 5 and even Tesla camp..... that is strong competition. Anyway that would be way out of my range.
Its an absolutely stunning car!
What evidence that Renault have improved the ownership experience.
3 other points of interest not mentioned.
Door handles recessed, pop out and pull. Not a fan personally.
Tiny boot release button.
Very large step when back seats down.
Shame a sun roof is not mentioned, to brighten up that dark interior.
Yeah way too dark and tight in the back, not a good place to be.
There isn’t a sun roof option
Belt line is too high so it doesn't have interior feeling of spaciousness which isn't helped by the dark interior. I almost wish most cars presented were of a lighter color to see the interior details better.
Check out the new Smart #1 especially the Launch Edition, much more room in back, brighter too and has panoramic sun roof.
This looks nicccccce that head unit will be big winner . Integration with buttons what not to like
Feeling very frustrated that it seems like it will be many more months before we can see and drive a Megane E-Tech in the UK. Really looks to be very competitive if you can live with the space limitations. The new Nissan/Renault EV platform bodes well for future models which I guess will include the next generation Leaf.
One wonders if there are any rainless days in GB...
I think you are the best beside Alex on Autos and Autogefuehl, but my wish is that you like Alex should be a little more focused on the total lifecost and driving comfort of a car, and not only range and charging time that most people dont need. Most batteries are the same and much fast charging will have a price after some years.
Now UK heat pump standard on iconic
No mention of the Harmon Kardon sound system? Great info otherwise!
Every Renault I’ve ever had (3) has had electrical issues, I won’t get fooled again, especially when electrical issues would pretty much stop you dead.
I have the exact same experience. 😅
Sounds like a real competitor for the Id.3 - sound hit Australian showrooms in like 20 years once oil is totally banned.
Not sure why they couldn't have made the car a little bit taller, have better ground clearance and much better rear space. The rear seating experience in EV's is pretty shocking and for the money you're paying it's not acceptable.
I love this design more than the ariya. I wish they'd bring it to the States
u should wait foir the new leaf then :)
great interior and the exterior is pretty good
Hope when the New Renault 5e comes out it has this technology and set up copied into a smaller package.
Curious what those proper measured kWh/100 figures are, when it would be so efficient.
For price point the cheap price is without CCS and only 40kWh. And it looks really cramped. ID is really more spacious.
I wanna drive this
It looks great.
However many of us like a higher seat position, for a better driving experience.
European market only????
As long as you have kids in car seats (or no kids) the rear footwell thing is no issue.. I guess
yes, it's clearly possible to oversize the wheels, this is pure example, as those are annoyingly big
Surely we'll get to a point with efficiency where governments mandate a range average with non-compliance penalties like we see with CO2 emissions now.
Nice looking car, apart from the "Portaloo Latrine Grey" paint job.
