NEW Renault Megane E-Tech Electric 2022 review: the VW ID.3's worst nightmare [4K]

  • The all-new Renault Megane E-Tech will only be available as an electric car and, with prices expected to start around £35,000, it might just be an absolute bargain.
Renault has made it clear that the Megane E-Tech takes aim at the Volkswagen ID.3, a car built from the ground up to be an EV. And the French manufacturer has gone the same route with its new Megane E-Tech, which is not only features architecture that's bespoke for EVs but also comes with a battery that's 11cm in thickness - the thinnest on the market. Battery life is pretty decent, too, with entry-level 40kWh cars offering 186 miles of range while top-spec 60kWh cars up that to 292 miles. It's quick to charge, too, taking just 30 minutes to top up 186 miles on a 130kW charger (if you've got the bigger battery installed). Couple that with a Google-powered infotainment system and semi-autonomous driving modes, and you've got a very well-rounded EV.

Great review, as always! I bought my first Renault last year... mainly because it was a great offer. I was really unsure if I had made the right decision until it arrived. It's the new Captur and I am so impressed with the build quality and running costs. I was one of those people who always said you wouldn't buy a French car, but this Megane E-Tech is probably going to be my next purchase in a couple of years.

I really don't get why leather seats are considered 'premium', they're less comfortable that a quality fabric, freezing cold in the winter & burning hot in the summer. Having had both I'd always opt for a quality fabric given the choice.

    • @DeeSock
      @DeeSock 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Premium don't seem collect odor/filth as easily and are also easy to wipe clean. In extreme temperatures, heated and cooling seating options, and pre-entry ambient temperature option for EVs, improve seat temperature control. It's easier to shift position if back feeling restless or something, because leather grips less. Long ago in early days of cars, cloth was the luxury option so you have a point. Having moved to premium seats (vegan leather) I prefer it overall, but can see why some may prefer cloth

    • @ssssssss6889

This looks to be a seriously impressive car. Like Steve Copley of Autocar I would have rated it above the bigger and much more expensive Kia EV6 which won the European Car of the Year award. Not only is it (like all recent Renaults) a very pretty car but nicely finished car with great tech. I was thinking that a Tesla Model 3 would be my next car (I currently have a BMW i3s which is shortly to end production) but I am now seriously thinking about the Megane E-Tech which being more compact and having a hatch suits my requirements better. The real attraction of the M3 is the Tesla Supercharger network so I will be interested to see how the Megane infotainment system incorporates the plotting of charge points.

6:51 The Mégane is a family car so the back sits will be fine, and a flat "banquette" is better with 3 children. I have a Tesla model 3 and 3 children and I would have preferred a banquette rather than 2 "bucket like" sits and a strange place in the middle. Of course, bucket sits are better on a race track, but -- again -- family car ! And if you want to drive in sport mode from time to time, you will probably not do it with children at the back. And if you want 3 bucket sits at the back with the same safety level, you will need a larger car and you will pay the price in cities.

A brilliant touch going to the experts for the tech, Google, constantly updated.......well done Renault!
I've just ordered an Iconic model. It was a straight choice between the Megage and the Tesla Model 3 for the similar price......no contest!
By the way, Renault say the 0-60 time takes 7.5sec. But independent reviews have clocked it at 6.9 second (which is Mini Cooper S territory but with that lovely instance torque!)......typically French, underplaying

May all reviewers change to so many miles in X minutes or 100 miles in Y minutes.

200 hp in FWD has not really been an issue for a long time. RWD or AWD is always going to have advantages but for packaging reasons FWD is better - ie boot space. This is not really a performance car so it's fit for purpose - not sure how they will make a hot version if they decide to as would really need AWD or don't think it would fit very easily. Great effort, probably the best smaller EV I have seen and can see it selling a lot.

Thanks for this review. As a Golf owner, I was looking forward to the ID3 but got disheartened by all of its problems! Maybe they'll be ironed out in update 3.0, but from what I can see, maybe the software problems will persist?
I don't really need loafs of room in the back, but I do need boot/trunk space, so this is much better. I also like the Google based infotainment, why VW went proprietary, when they couldn't get it right in the first place?
I don't know if you've filmed a deeper review of the infotainment system on the Megane, but it could probably do with one, to make more of a comparison to the ID3!
If only the price could undercut the ID3, as Renault isn't as premium a brand as VW! MG isn't either, but then they're cheaper cars, so you can look past the brand difference! I also hope Renault have included curtain airbags, unlike the new Zoe, with its zero stars' NCAP rating!?

"I also hope Renault have included curtain airbags, unlike the new Zoe, with its zero stars' NCAP rating!?"
Zero star was not due to the airbag definition, but the age of conception of the car (Euro NCAP decided to perform a new test, after the one from 2013 (5-starts) having expired, as a crash validity is only 7 years).
However this Megane E-tech will surely get 5-stars, like every Renault car at its launch.

The one of them had a strange noise, and my friend used to have music in order to distract him from the noise. Such is the great German engineering in VW. The car, i still have it after 220.000 kms, still does not burn oil and runs like new. This says much about engineering of Renault and VW. Do not let me start with the failed turbos of the TSIs. @@wayneheyes904 Buying a *brand new* car is always expensive, however just in France, about 1 million *new* cars are sold each year, with an average price of 27 k€, and then you have to pay for fuel and maintenance, and still in France, EVs under 45 k€ get a -6000 € "bonus" while ICE cars get a "malus" that can reach... +40 k€ !! And an *average* price of 27 k€ (bonus/malus not included) implies many far more expansive cars sold. And of course, the more EVs are sold, the more used EVs will be available at quite lower prices, after a few years. The main point is to have EVs for every needs at every prices : still in France a Dacia EV costs 12 k€, new, battery included, and even 7500 k€ for people with low incomes. So ok, this Mégane is "expensive", but not so much compared to an equivalent ICE car including all costs (fuel and maintenance) and including incentives. So many will be able to buy this Mégane, and it implies more EVs on the road, so less pollution, less noise, less green effect emissions, less dependence to foreign petrol, etc. In fact, the price argument is not new, the Renault Zoé was supposed to be a failure because it is "expensive" compared to a Renault Clio, but Zoé is the most sold EV in Europe.

Just like the Clio, no height adjustable boot floor & what under floor storage there is, full up charging cables. From £35,000 not exactly affordable for many families. Charging times. I would bet the 40kw battery will take 8-9 hours on a 7.4 kw charger. We only have one public charging point in the town where I live & it is a 7.4 kw.
292 mile driving range, that will be more like 210 in the winter. The bigger battery version will probably price out at over £40,000. Sorry I don't buy this electric car rush. 2/3 worlds electricity is still produced by fossil fuel power stations. So the well to wheel is the same as petrol.
Where is the UK infrastructure. If you live in a city fine, but rural areas it is rubbish. If you have drive 30 miles to charge the car. Errrg. Thousands of properties have on street parking. What do we do with the lithium ion batteries at the end of their life? The big one for many families is not only the cost of the car new, plus a home wall box if you can have one, is car insurance which is about double the price of a fossil fuel car.
