I just came from a test drive with the Megane. My own will come in December. All the travel assists are great. The drive with the Cupra Born last December was also great but at the meantime the travel assist can't order anymore, also the 360° Camera is a great Feature. But can't anymore be ordered for the Cupra. So I make my decision to go with the Megane.
I love everything about how the Megane drives, it is just awesome. I don't agree that it is boring to drive in any way, in fact I think many will prefer the stability of the front wheel drive. What was a letdown for me was the seating position and space (or lack thereof) for legs and feet both in the drivers seat and in the back seat. So try before you buy. If you fit well, go for it.
There is always a taste factor and everyone has a different opinion, but front wheel drive is not more stable than red. It is the opposite. But glad you like your Megane.
@@BatteryLife I didn't order one yet, and probably won't because of the space problem. If you are looking for a sporty car, rwd may be more rewarding to drive hard, especially if the car lets you drift it. The average person though wouldn't like that happening in the wet and snow during normal driving. That's what I mean by stability, and what I think the average driver would call stability. A rwd car gets more traction off the line, and with an electric car with traction control even slippery conditions may not be an issue. Just most people prefer a car that is naturally and consistently understeering, that's what I'm saying.
@@itekani traction control in id3 and my mothers cupra born is very good. I have never had problems last winter with snowy roads uphill. I even took an icy road uphill for some time. The cars feel very stable.
@@BatteryLife it has been my experience that FWD EVs have fared better in difficult snowy and icy situations here in Iceland even though EVs have ca 50-50 weight distribution. Reason is directional stability. When you drive a wheelbarrow and face tough conditions you turn it around and drag it.
Good and concice comparison. Here in the Nordic countries, as someone already mentioned, I think the front wheel drive will be appreciated, since it generally gives you a calmer behaviour in winter conditions, e.g. when overtaking. Most people are accustomed to front wheel drive now, but off course rear wheel drive is more "fun".
The comparison is a bit to your personal taste, that is, it seems that you want to leave Id3 in a better place because it is your car. But in terms of the driving position, the Megane far exceeds the Id3 in terms of qualities. And we don't even talk about infotainment anymore... Inside the Id3 it looks like a toy car. And by the way, the Megane does have rear air vents in all versions except the basic one.
They are close concurrents but Megane is a bit better on many points. Renault has several years advantage in experience with EV. Megane feels more mature while ID3 feels more younger.
I have a Dacia Spring for daily use and a Renault Captur for longer Journeys. I am looking for replacing the Captur in 2023 or 2024 with an EV. I like more id3 for rear wheel drive, larger windows with better visibility, a litlle more spacious inside, and more regular car like to drive than SUV-ish Megane e tech I like though more the interior of Megane e tech and their infotainment
I already ordered the Megane and the reason was the towing capability. I like to get the Google system and that it is lower in height. I cannot understand VW for lacking the towing hook and additionally the bike rack is uncomfortable high. Not to compare with the practicality of a Golf. VW has to change that. In July, Renault sold more Megane etech than VW ID.3s.
For a test I'd just compared the Cupra Born with the Megane -.... I've ordered the Megane mainly because of the deep trunk, (the wheelchair of my mother can stand inside) an I ordered with the detachable trailer coupling... will come in december 22 (for the Cupra Born it would be june/july 23) Thanks for the great video
Thank you for the great and very useful review. Having tested both cars I'd say the more recent project of the Megane gives some advantages, software in particular. The main disadvantage of the Megane is the rear space: leg space is too limited and seating position not as comfortable like in the ID3. I found it also quite claustrofobic with black interior and such small rear windows. At least the Megane has ventilation for rear seats, this is quite important if you have children for example. Additional advantages for the Megane are: battery preheating selecting a charger in the navigation system, in winter in particular; charge port position allow to easily charge at Tesla supercharger without interfering with Tesla users.
Charge port position isn't a problem for Tesla chargers? Correct me if I'm wrong but it's similar to the etron position and they're often parked awkwardly to access the Super chargers. What's the difference that makes Megane better on this front?
Regards to the Charging port position. The charge port switches sides to the left side front on UK so is on the opposite side to that of the driver. This is ideal I guess for kerbside charging in each country, but is the most awkward side for UK cars in Tesla Charging Stalls
Great review. The way you compare them with your phone between the cars and you put all the numbers on the screen. Do more reviews with electric cars like that.
I don't own pets but still it would be common sense on a car that costs half as much as my house that there would be a button to keep the AC running for 5 minutes while I'm in the store getting chips and beer. At this point the car companies have to be r-word to not create this kind of common sense functions. Another example that comes to mind is a button to toggle crawling, these are EVs and it would be a simple software piece, I don't need a random guy in a suit sitting at a desk to decide if my expensive EV should or should not have an immutable crawl mode.

If megane e tech had rwd i would prefer it but in the winter time in switzerland i need an e- car with 4wd or at least rwd. And driving in the winter does my id3 very good on the snowy streets way up.

i don't see that. in the ID.3 you get RWD and a 77kWh battery because it is not based on an ICE car. in two years you might get 58-60kWh LFP in an ID.3 - theoretically, while this is not possible in the megane because of limited space for the battery.
@@stefanweilhartner4415 both cars have the same exterior dimensions, so both can get similar batteries. I own an ID.3. The only thing that is definitely missing from the ID.3 is the towing bar. Huge mistake.
@@alexandru-florea the battery modules in the MEB are 14cm in height, the modules in the e-tech are 11cm in height. that is exactly the missing space to go from 60kWh to 77kWh. so, with the same energy density it is not possible to put a 77kWh battery in the e-tech. very big mistake in my eyes. with a higher energy density it is possible but that would be more expensive. VW owns a majority of Gotion high-tech, a big battery producer with modern LFP tech. with more space for the battery, it is also possible to use cheaper LFP tech for medium range.
@@BatteryLife you misunderstood what I meant. All other videos seem to be showing only one car but talk vaguely about others, while your video shows both. Your style is much better.
What's your source for the weight of the Renault? According to Renault homepage the weight is 1636 kg for the larger pack. Ca 150 kg lighter than the ID.3. I could certainly feel it when I through into corners, much more agile than the heavy ID.3.
@@BatteryLife ev-database says 1711 kg but you say 1783? And also I would rather use official data from the manufacturer. Renault says 1636 kg. Every reviewer (apart from you) that I've seen comparing the cars have mentioned the Megane being more agile, which aligns with my experience. So I'm surprised about your opinion. :)
How come acceleration in Megane is supposedly so much worse, when in the official specs it's 7.4 sec for Megane vs 7.3 sec for ID4? 0.1 second difference is indistinguishable (and it's still faster than most of the ICE cars)
The 7.4 is to 60 mph. I think the Megane software constrains acceleration from 0 and it then ramps up later. So Megane accelerates slower at lower speeds.
Just test drove a Mégane back to back with the Cupra Born and it was better in pretty much every way other than having a preference for rear wheel drive. Not tried the VW ID3 yet but assuming the driving experience would be almost identical to the Born.
Excellent comparison. And seemed like you tried to be very fair. Thank you. I hope the sw ver 3.0 does some wonder. I sat in a new VW caddy and the system was way quicker than in.my golf 8... had a matt screen too.
You also need better hardware for good software. Existing ID3 and ID4 might not get the whole stack of software because of the weak(er) computer behind.
Don't understand his comment regarding the Megane feeling much slower in the acceleration as compared with the id3. The 0-60 times are virtually identical.
I’ve had an ID.3 for a year and now I have a Megane. Build quality deffo better on the VW, Design (especially interior) deffo better on the Renault. Of the ID.3 I hated the clumsy infotainment system, the dark buttons you couldn’t see at night and the weird toy-like speedometer. Of the Megane I’m hating all the annoying noises inside the cabin. This is my 4th Renault (a Clio mk4, a Zoe ZE40, the new Zoe GT line and now this Megane) and they ALL share the annoying noisy rattling plastics.
VW went too early and hastily to catch up with Tesla that the final product is underwhelming. Think other EV automakers saw this coming and got the message to improve a bit more.
My e-Golf has regen levels too and i quite like that. In the city I drive in B-Mode, on countryroads regen level 2 and on a highway D-Mode. Hopefully VW could update the software and give the ID. Models more regen levels and even one pedal driving. Please VW implement more driving options with 3.0 or 3.1... I do not understand why VW removed this feature...
I see Renault offers roof bars on the Megane e-tech but VW doesn't offer this option on the ID.3. A few roof-bar companies offer roof bars for the ID.3 but there is some discussion on the forums, some say VW say it's no problem to fit bars and apparently there are marks on the car to show where they should be fitted. Other opinions say VW does not approve of bars being fitted. Please can you tells us the facts of this, Chris?
Weird, your comment about travel assist. In the enyaq you just need to grip the wheel and it recognises you're there. I assumed the ID cars would be the same
very similar, but the ID.3 offers a bigger battery with 77kWh and this is where Renault has it's limits and that of course will show in the number of sold cars. most of the ID.3 users buy the 77kWh long range version. my personal preference is rear wheel drive, and front wheel drive does not make sense in an electric car. that shows that renault did not start with a clean sheet to make an EV. it is still based on an ICE platform. i am sure that the megan e-tech sells well and it looks nice, but VW saw the potential for their pure electric car lineup years ago and had trust/confidence in this development where renault is obviously still struggling with their decision and have to compromise at the end. it will be interesting how renault is doing as a whole company in 2025, when ICE sales are down to 50% and the ICE market gets extremely tight and no one in europe will make profits from ICE cars anymore. only the companies who make good profits with EVs can survive. Alfa Romeo will be one of the car brands that might die. No EV so far. Toyota will also collapse in Europe. Maybe Mazda too. The Toyota BZ4X is extremely disappointing regarding charging speed, despite their problems that wheels are falling off. The Mazda electric CX-30 has an absolutely inferior range. no one is buying it.
The megane e tech platform was made for AWD. The reason why megane is FWD is space in the trunk. The new Scenic will feature AWD as well as 87kwh battery just like the nissan Arya.
Megane looks bigger while being tiny smaller. Still I like the id3 more.. Its more an ev model where the megane still looks like a petrol car. Its too bulky as well
Infotainment screen is smaller in id3 and you think that’s a good thing the phone holder makes it feel more cramped 😂 all the things that are better about the Megane you call a negative 😂 it’s obvious you own an id3 and the arm rests are a lot harder on the id3 I’ve tried both, next time don’t compare what you already have as you are incapable of not being biased
Yes, I own an Id.3, but I am not biased at all. I know the strengths and the weaknesses of it. I only had the Megane for a few hours though. But I said what I personally find better and worse. It doesn't have to be your opinion. I even sat in both right after each other when it comes to the armrest softness 😉
The question is how good will be Renault after 10. years, I had Megane III it is not bad car but many things I have to changed (clutch, sensors, gaskets etc :-) ) with 150000km it was too much :)
My concern on Renault is the lack of quality but in NZ both are horrendously over-priced. The Renault marque has a poor reputation its built for 70years, no thanks. Towing is a huge plus otherwise.
The Nissan Ariya is built on the same platform and shares a lot of tech with Megane e-tech. Autogefühl was really taken by the quality feeling of the interior of the Nissan Ariya at the presentation in Sweden.
I tried the megane and the quality is excellent when compared to VW i know. The styling of the ID3 interior is cool but quality wise it is not on par with the german car's reputation.
This guy is totaly missing the point. There is no comparison between those two cars because ID3 is such an ugly duck with its plastic interior finish from a Lada. Nobody with a bit of sense would buy an ID3 instead of a Megane.
Renault looks better, better interior, good infotainment. ID3 looks insade and outside budget for the high price. Sorry VW, ID3 is not the future! Its bad looking, bad infotainment, bad materials, high price... Its the bigest mistake since Dieselgate!
The first letters before the "-" is the area (city) in this case Passau and Regensburg Then there are one or two letters which means in the city or outside and then 1 to 3 numbers. The E at the end means electric.
Do we have to take this review serious….😮 The ID3 (and also the ID4) is just a poor attempt of Volkswagen to join the EV market. The quality of the used materials is really horrible, and still, after two years of struggling all the software issues are mostly unresolved.
Yes, you do. That is just your opinion. I am fine with the materials, the software issues have been minor for me. And it drives just great. That is my opinion.
I would never buy another French car. They always look cool but are never reliable. I had a E208 before the ID3 thinking they had pulled their socks up but it has so many electrical faults and rates to rattle after the first year. VW is a much better built car.
Just on looks and infotainment alone, the Mégane easily takes the win.
The Megane is leagues ahead in terms of interior/exterior design, infotainement compared to the ID3.

i don't see that. in the ID.3 you get RWD and a 77kWh battery because it is not based on an ICE car. in two years you might get 58-60kWh LFP in an ID.3 - theoretically, while this is not possible in the megane because of limited space for the battery.
Great direct comparison video. Not just seeing one car being reviewed with positive and negative points.
I don't see that. VW drives great, Renault great software. Rest very similar.
EV database. I did not feel that it is any better through corners. Opposite with the fwd
@@thorsev6960 On German Renault page it says exactly 1783kg for 60kWh/160kW version.
@@JPetr94 French Renault site brochure has it at 1636 kg.
@@thorsev6960 lol, in Polish website it's 1708 kg (60kWh/160kW version). What's up with Renault throwing masses all over the place?!
How come acceleration in Megane is supposedly so much worse, when in the official specs it's 7.4 sec for Megane vs 7.3 sec for ID4?
0.1 second difference is indistinguishable (and it's still faster than most of the ICE cars)
Try it out. In my test it is slower than my Id.3 and it doesn't feel good.
@@BatteryLife What's the time difference you have seen in 0-100?
The ID.3 motor has a slightly higher torque…and the gearing could make a difference, too.
The 7.4 is to 60 mph. I think the Megane software constrains acceleration from 0 and it then ramps up later. So Megane accelerates slower at lower speeds.
Travel assist on my ID.3 doesn’t require jerking the wheel. Just grip it firmly and the warning goes away.
Sorry, that is what I wanted to say. Firmly, in the Megane, slight touch is enough.
But the Megane starts very slowly. Try it.
@@BatteryLife explain the same times for 0-60mph, 7.4 secs versus 7.3 secs. Are Renault not being truthful?
Nice comparison. Shame the Megane is small feeling inside.
Great comparison but you didn’t say whether you would switch cars?
Great review!
I'm seeing lots of Megan's around here, they are beautiful. I was curious if they are just as good on the inside + the "car" parts.
Yes, the are
Did you have the same power delivery feeling in sport mode?
Yes
@@BatteryLife 🙏
Renault💪🔝🔝🔝❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Renault Megane 😍
Why did you pick the ID3 instead of the Cupra Born with much better quality interior a better looking shape not to mention the whole built quality?
I’ve had an ID.3 for a year and now I have a Megane.
Build quality deffo better on the VW,
Design (especially interior) deffo better on the Renault.
Because of rear wheel drive
@@BatteryLife Very interesting
I see Renault offers roof bars on the Megane e-tech but VW doesn't offer this option on the ID.3.
A few roof-bar companies offer roof bars for the ID.3 but there is some discussion on the forums, some say VW say it's no problem to fit bars and apparently there are marks on the car to show where they should be fitted. Other opinions say VW does not approve of bars being fitted.
Please can you tells us the facts of this, Chris?
No roof bars allowed because of the weight. The structure won't hold it.
Great video!
Did test drive them both, Megane is superior to the id3. Cabin noise and especially the controls are just better, vw should drop the touch buttons....
Cabin noise was not different in my drives.
Would the Megane be better in snow because its front wheel drive?
Yes, for sure.
Tha main question: is the 22kW onboard charger similar to Zoe, or is it a separate AC/DC unit like in most EVs?
onboard! (same technology as the zoe)
No heat pump on rhd version for Megane uk and Ireland . Price is just a killer when now compared to tesla model 3 and mg ev4
While talking about the range it should be stated that ID.3 may have a bigger battery - 77 kWh.
Can have. But also than more expensive
Weird, your comment about travel assist. In the enyaq you just need to grip the wheel and it recognises you're there. I assumed the ID cars would be the same
They are. I was wrong. What I meant to say was you need to press tight, in the Megane even a light touch does it.
Renault is the best
A little correction. I have an ID3 with travel assist. You don’t have to move the steering wheel to confirm your attention. A simple touch is enough.
Yes, I was wrong, but firm touch. Megane needs only soft touch
Besides the occasional time I could use tow hook. I still like my Born better as choice than the Mégane. Was better priced too.
Much better car than the Zoe. VW need to step up the game for WLTP range of the mid range battery.
In my 130 range test, id.3 had more range
@@BatteryLife but still not enough
@@BatteryLife on smaller tires though?
almost the same range per kWh. if you need more range, buy the bigger battery. you can't get that from renault. most people prefer the bigger battery.
@@stefanweilhartner4415 the problem is that the 77kWh battery comes with restrictions, like no 18" or glass roof.
Renault MegE much better looking inside and out. Drive? I'll have to test that out...
I watched the whole video but I think I missed the answer for the question in the title. Where is it?
very similar, but the ID.3 offers a bigger battery with 77kWh and this is where Renault has it's limits and that of course will show in the number of sold cars. most of the ID.3 users buy the 77kWh long range version.
my personal preference is rear wheel drive, and front wheel drive does not make sense in an electric car. that shows that renault did not start with a clean sheet to make an EV. it is still based on an ICE platform.
i am sure that the megan e-tech sells well and it looks nice, but VW saw the potential for their pure electric car lineup years ago and had trust/confidence in this development where renault is obviously still struggling with their decision and have to compromise at the end.
it will be interesting how renault is doing as a whole company in 2025, when ICE sales are down to 50% and the ICE market gets extremely tight and no one in europe will make profits from ICE cars anymore.
only the companies who make good profits with EVs can survive.
Megane e-tech and Nissan Ariya share the same platform and other tech ☺️
The megane e tech platform was made for AWD. The reason why megane is FWD is space in the trunk. The new Scenic will feature AWD as well as 87kwh battery just like the nissan Arya.
Megane looks bigger while being tiny smaller. Still I like the id3 more.. Its more an ev model where the megane still looks like a petrol car. Its too bulky as well
Was told Megane not available for cash in n Ireland so they want the interest to correct for lower price
French engineering beating German engineering? Who would have thought…
Just software 😉
Megane has the looks, it is sexier, VW looks like it was cut with an axe
No info and comparison on ground clearance:(
Sorry, no idea on both cars.
@@BatteryLife ID3 is 150mm. I made a screenshot from your video about owner's manual. 😁 Thank me later. 😉
Megane.
"It takes all the fun out of an electric car" (12:48) ... How many times in the lifetime of a car do you test the 0 - 100 km/h? 🤔🤣
Not 0-100, but 0-50 almost every day.
@@BatteryLife Oh, that childish behavior after a red light... OK, you win... 😝
Renault Mégane E-Tech the best ! Belgium. 😉
Nobody with a bit of sense would buy an ID3 instead of a Megane.
reality shows otherwise. there are people with other priorities, like RWD or 77kWh battery,...
Renault looks better, better interior, good infotainment. ID3 looks insade and outside budget for the high price. Sorry VW, ID3 is not the future! Its bad looking, bad infotainment, bad materials, high price... Its the bigest mistake since Dieselgate!
How do people memorise those number plates
They don't 😉
The first letters before the "-" is the area (city) in this case Passau and Regensburg
Then there are one or two letters which means in the city or outside
and then 1 to 3 numbers.
The E at the end means electric.
But But But you didn't answer the question - Will you switch? I enjoyed the comparison. On paper, I prefer the ID3.
I think I did with the Acceleration problem of the Megane and how much better the Id.3 handles.
Megane kills the vw .as you are tall passengers normally ok
can you make a review of new MG4 great 👍 👌 Ev for the money 💰
we are all waiting for your honest review thanks
I am waiting to get one in my hands
@@BatteryLife good news I think for price it will shake up the market and other manufacturers the working man's Ev 😀
Never compare German machine with others cars
Of course you can. The Megane is great. No need to be built in Germany.
I would never buy another French car. They always look cool but are never reliable. I had a E208 before the ID3 thinking they had pulled their socks up but it has so many electrical faults and rates to rattle after the first year. VW is a much better built car.
ID3 is much much better!
Mercedes !
You'd have to be absolutely mad to think a French vehicle is better than a German one for sure.
I think so, in any case this one is better than an ID3, as the new 308 is better than a Golf since vw has reoriented itself towards design type hearse
Megane is way new-er tech. We shall compare again Megane e tech with 2023 id3 facelift
It is called opinion 😉 why should Renault not build a great EV?
You're ignorant. French have also talented engineers.
Renault are French ….Great reason to avoid/ignore!
