The Chenab Rail Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir, India was designed as a single-track bridge after considering aesthetics, economy, and the availability of local materials and expertise. The bridge is 1,315 meters long, with a 467 meter arch span and a height of 359 meters above the riverbed, making it the world's highest railway bridge

Geological conditions is also one of the major reasons even though this line might be used for military traffic as well. However double line would mean more drilling thru the fragile mountains and more space reqd. Also the rail bridge at that location and at that height will need to be enhanced even more in order to support 2 way trains which would put more pressure on it. Also this area is earthquake prone of almost zone 5 . Thr r several reasons. Yeh koi delhi kolkata plains main rail lines nahi hai jo double line, 4 line bana lo. People should go and visit these locations first to understand basic geological and topographical features themselves
All major bridges like Chenab bridge or Anjikhand bridge has been designed and buoilt to accommodate 2-tracks if required in future. Of course, for 2 track operation rest of the route also need to have 2-tracks which though unlikely in short-term cannot be ruled out in future depending on how much military traffic is generated. Railways usually go for single line for complex routes to keep costs down and then wait for traffic to grow before doubling it. There is a risk doubling may never happen as is current situation with Konkan railway but given costs of building such major bridges having 2-track width is more of a forward planning as building another bridge of this nature to accommodate additional track will be overkill.

I'm not saying double lane was required or not but Kashmir valley has only this train route to connect to anywhere (i.e. more than 5 million people who may benefit with double lane for passenger and goods traffic) idk if less population was the best counter argument. Not to mention military traffic. I'm no expert but i have seen military tanks been transported by roads their with no more than 20 km/hr speed. Also in 2023 total of 2,11,80,011 tourist travelled their. So i don't know if their still ain't demand for double lane.

The simple and straight answer is the arch bridge safety. It is made to handle earthquate of size 7 on Rischter scale, wind speeds of upto 256 kmph and granade proof. All of this gets cancelled when the bridge dual tracks with trains running on either side. When train runs on one side the overall width, the weight of rails increases reducing the capacity. Also when a train runs on any one side, the total weight goes on eother side of the track when the bridge can handle it at center only. The gravity is big deal at this height and the total mass put on the end of arches at a time. Also don't forget Himalaya is most fragile moutain ranges.
What about bringing one line above built single line.small bridge above main bridge? To go other side.
@@jigneshsavani31 weight and pressure would still be exterted also double lines would mean double drilling in fragile environs. I think most people commenting here dont really quite understand the geological sensitivity of this location.
@@jaguarunleashed4935 weight of the other bridge is added no need to drill extra. I am just sharing my idea without knowing conditions it is thought if people work on it have full data and may thought about it. Yes I agree i don't have expertise in this at this moment.
@@jigneshsavani31 im talking about drilling on the main route as well from whr the train passes thru tunnels before and after the bridge. These are high earthquake sensitive zone 5 mountain area. Even building single line is a big challenge. Plz check the data of the usbrl project , u will know how tough it has been to construct this.
That's right. The soil underneath has only little density to be able to withstand the required mass above. Already maximum possible drilling, filling has been done with the help of high end simulation softwares with raw geological data. Adding another track causes gravitation imbalance while adding another track underneath or over cannot be used because trains don't have overpasses and then added weight on same pillars.
With available Indian technologies this is what it is possible. We don't want cost to triple or quadraple with swiss technologies and also leave the maitenance at that countriy's mercy.

3:58 one point I would like to add here in your knowledge: India's biggest lithium reserve is discovered near Chenab bridge. Which is very close to this alignment and could be joined in near future.
It takes almost 20 years to complete this entire single track. It goes through younger himalayan mountains, that is not a joke. It has more than 100kms only tunnels. Now one can imagine the cost and time of constructing double track.

Nice video. Yes contructing through such terrain requires a lot of work. My question is have the Engineers put sensors on the bridge to study it deflections and vibrations. I mean a constant monitoring for safety.

You have to bear in mind that the population of J&K is only 1.25cr and the total fertility rate is less than 2 it means that in the current scenario saturation of the current line and sharp increase in demand is very unlikely.

Building single line railways bridge in this area is mission impossible itself.
We aren't the first country to build something like this. Countries like China and US and even Japan has built multi track bridges at such heights

@@amiteshsingh5033 The space on this bridge and Anjikhand bridge is enough for 2-track operation. Because the alignment has only one track, they placed single tracks to reduce maintenance costs and also establish how much the topography is stable outside of simulation tests.
