      However friendly and accessible, it was an awful explanation.
      1) The RJ45 combiner/splitter is used in conjunction with 8-wire Cat5+ cables;
      2) It works by effectively degrading the Cat5+ line to a pair of 4-wire cables;
      3) where you could have achieved 1000 Mbps for a single connection over the Cat5+ line, with a combiner/splitter properly connected on each side of the Cat5+ line, you would be able to have 2 separate 100 Mbps connections.
      2 connections, but 10 times slower. Ya gotta really want to avoid running the additional Cat5+ line or using a network switch.

    Didn't know how signal cables could be so tricky (SO different from splitting electrical current). Lucky for no reason I purchased TWO combiner/splitters online but was very upset it didn't work the way I wanted until watching this video. Thanks, much appreciated. Brilliant, clear and simple demo saved my day.

      This is a digital signal, not an analog one. That means that the information is travelling in 0 and 1 bits form, and that cannot be split into 2 unlike an analog signal like electric current for example, which splits the electrons to flow in 2 directions.

    this worked well. my setup> cablemodem & switch -> splitter -> long line -> combiner -> router & line 1. line 2-4 are for my main systems, line 1 is rerouted back to the cablemodem and swich which is by the tv so i can connect other things on that end.

    This is a pretty sweet solution if the cable in the wall is Cat5 with 8 threads (supports gigabyte Ethernet). when you use the splitter 4 threads are used for each device which means a maximum speed of 100 mb/s which is usually good enough for most uses

    Great, now I understand, and it makes much more sense to me. However, I am wondering why resellers aren't selling it in pairs, I got my splitter single via Amazon and no mentioning what so ever that 2 will be required.But yeah if something was split up, it must be combined again... Thanks for your short video + explenation

      +Anes Lihovac Thanks for the feedback! I'm not sure why other resellers sell it singly, unless it is to draw customers in with a lower price. We've had enough complications with these items that we now sell it as a kit so people are aware of the need to use it in pairs.

    To shed some light on what he said: 4 out of the 8 wires in the cable carry the actual data. 1 pair for Transmit (Tx +/-) and 1 pair for Receive (Rx +/-) . The final two pairs in a 4 pair ethernet cable are usually split into 1 pair for Ground (GND +/-*) and 1 pair for Accessory (POE, power of ethernet, usually).
    What these splitters do is take one cable (the one between the wall plates in the video) and put two whole sets of transmit and receive circuits into it, by cutting out what would normally be a ground circuit and the accessory circuit and putting them to work as an additional Transmit pair and Receive pair. That's why you need one splitter on each end. The network device (switch in this case) is only really built to 'see' one set of transmit and receive pairs on each of its ports.
    * Ground does not have a polarity, the reason you work in pairs is to create a loop between the two connected devices so electricity can flow. Don't think of the +/- as polarity, just that for any given function that a pair can provide, you need two wires connected to complete the circuit.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz ปีที่แล้ว

      This explains it. I was aware that 10/100 only uses 2 wire pairs out of 4, and suspected these would be wired that way.
      However it strikes me not as a solution for gigabit, as that uses all 4 pairs each in bidi mode.

    @klwc Unless you know for a fact that the first splitter is a splitter/combiner, then you may not be able to combine the two signals. Only using a pair of splitter/combiner will allow you to combine the two signals over the single cable, and then split them back for the two computers.

  • @CableOrganizer1
    @CableOrganizer1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ethee Wheelio, we can't respond directly as yours is a linked comment, but with the information you've given us we can only speculate on the issue. Remember, this splitter/combiner is mainly for conserving the amount of cables you need to use over a substantial distance, so rather than splitting one signal over two cables, its purpose is two combine the signal from two cables into one, then split the signal again across two cables (using a second splitter combiner at the other end of the run). You need two splitter/combiners for this to work.

    I am glad I came across this video because I initially assumed that I could plug the splitter into my BT hub and then plug to computers into it, I now know this isn't how it works. So my problem is as follows, I have four connections on the back of my BT hub, so I can plug four computers into it. Up until a couple of weeks ago I didn't have any problems. However I now plug my sky television box into the hub to get more functions. So I've had to unplug one computer. I was thinking about getting some kind of wireless network adapter, however it would be much easier if I could somehow use some kind of adapter that allowed me to plug to computers into one socket on the back of the hub, is this possible in any way?

    The speed for each of the signals would still be a fast ethernet speed (100Mb/s) right?

  • @CableOrganizer1
    @CableOrganizer1  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @mindfull777 You would need to have a second cable plugged into the router, then use one of the splitter/combiners to "combine" the signal into one cable and then split the signal with the other splitter/combiner just before the two xboxs. Or you can try either a switch or just have a second cable go from the second xbox directly to the router.

    Hey! Thank you for this. Do you know why my router isn't identifying the LAN connections? I've plugged two cables into the splitter and these two into the router, another single cable through this splitter and the same at the other end and plugged the final two cables into my PC and PS5 (2 cables - Splitter - 1 cable - Splitter - 2 cables), but I can't make it work. When I plug just one cable (without splitters), it works just fine. Do I need to configure something through TPLink? Thank you.

  • @demot0connor2

    Excellent explanation. On the source side does the signal have to come from the same source? For example would it work if the source for cable 1 was an internet switch and the source for cable 2 was from an audio device connected using a balun extender over CAT 5, cable 1 on the output side would be connected to a wi-fi router and cable2 the output side would be connected to a speaker using a Balun extender. Thank you.

    because I have only one port that comes into my apartment, I'm not able to put a second splitter between the router and the wall.

    • @googleplusisdead
      @googleplusisdead 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you need a router. Any old one will work. A switch or hub _probably_ won't work as your ethernet/internet provider typically will only allow one device connected to the port. But folks upgrade their routers (usually including wifi) often so older ones that work fine but might not be the latest and greatest/fastest are available cheap, or even free. Low end ones will run you around $30 online, or at discount electronics stores like Frys Electronics.
      Good luck.

Do you need the extra rj45 socket or have you tried with just the cable directly to the Splitter?

    @CableOrganizers Okay, I am so confused. My understanding of these splitters is that you have 2 ethernet cables from 2 separate ports in the router going into the splitter. Then, you have one long ethernet cable going across your house to the other splitter. From this splitter, two more normal ethernet cables go out, one to each computer.
    So the setup is (Router) ==(Split)------------(Split)== (2 computers)
    This is not working for me, but that's how I interpret what you're saying in the vid...

    This is a good solution if you want to save the electricity costs of powering an extra Ethernet switch ($10/year). However, once you need Gigabit Ethernet speed or 3 (or more) computers on the end, then you need an Ethernet switch instead of the cable combiner/splitter.
    I wired my house this way (100 Mbit, 2 devices) over one cable - direct from router - no extra switch needed.

    I was wondering what this is for so now I know it's only useful if the sockets are planted on the wall; otherwise just connect the cable straight to the switches located at various places then connect the computers, printers, into the port of each switches directly.

    @teufelhunden29 - I forwarded your question to our IT dept and here is their answer:
    "No, the RJ45 Splitter/Combiner is not meant to split a signal coming out straight from a modem. It can only split a signal on one hand if it has been combined first on the other hand. If you want two separate networks, you need to connect a switch to your modem and then from your switch, connect the two wireless routers."
    Hope this helps you out and do not hesitate to contact us for anything else!

      Spend $10 more and use normal Ethernet cables and a 5port Gig E switch. www.dlink.com.au/home-solutions/DGS-1005A-5-port-gigabit-desktop-switch

    @Ridnarhtim That is the basic idea behind the splitter/combiner. Due to the amount of confused people, we are planning to re-shoot this video that will better explain the concept and hopefully clear up most of the confusion. Have you tested all cables, connections, jacks? Is either computer connecting?

    Hello thank you! Can i use the economiser like a switcher? Meaning if I set up my econ/splitter on the cpu end with two ethernet cables (one runs to a cpu and the other is for a laptop -- neither will run simultaneously(ever) most times the laptop will not be attached). In other words I only have one economiser on the cpu end and none at the router end. Will it still send a singal to either ports of the econ at the cpu end? I just don't want to unhook the cable from the cpu to attach my laptop on the rare occasion I am using it. THANKS!

    Hy,
    I'm not sure will you answer to me but I was wondering will these splitters work in my home, having one cable go from router to the room where is located PC and TV(internet TV), so probably you know that for iptv one of female RJ45 connectors on router is for TV so i want to know will this splitter mess up that special signal when combining with other in one cable and then again spliting it on the other end so that this special iptv signal goes only into iptv device.
    Sry for bad grammar but if you understand please answer, thx
