Hi. The "Link/Act" text on the fifth port means Link/Activity, and not Link/Account, and it refers to the indicator led on all the ports. It's only placed on top of port5 because of lack of space above the other ports
Sorry for bumping this comment but does that mean the 5th port is totally equal to other ones unlike what's being said in the video?

It functions like all the others. By convention, it is the one you use for uplink. I'm not sure if this has more capacity (it is a separate module after all), and therefore better suited for uplink. The module seperation is likely just because the port modules comes in 4-port and 1-port configurations. You'll see this in any switch and router

I missed that there was a question in there. This device should be called a splitter rather then a switch as it is designed to work in conjunction with internet. I'm not sure if it'll work with the particular setup you were describing.

Hello, I would like to kindly ask. I've purchased Switch TP-Link TL-SG105 5 port, Gigabit, and used it as an extension/multiplication of wired ethernet connection. The issue is that IPTV is not working while connected via the switch. To elaborate, when the set-top box is connected directly from the router, works without any problem. When I connect this switch to the router and then connect the set-top box from the switch, IPTV is not working. It has happened a few times that IPTV worked while connected via this switch, but went I turned off the tv in the evening and turned it back on in the following morning, it was not working again. Any thoughts? Thank you in advance.
This might sound odd but what type of CAT cable do you have going to your IPTV box? I did find that the switch could be a little finicky with types of cables.
Noobie question here. My cable modem from my ISP has 2 ethernet ports (A and B) at the back. Is it perfectly fine for my desktop pc to directly connect to ethernet port A and have my wifi router to occupy ethernet port B? what are the implications, pros and cons of this setup? thanks in advance for your response.
So in a set up like mine where my modem only as 2 port out that is connected to my wifi router I would have a desk top plugged into my wifi router. The more things that you run wired to your wifi router the faster you run out of plugs. This switch lets you add more wired connections should you run out of them.

I am returning this crap. I also did not come with an ethernet cable appropriate for this device to plug into either a modem or data cabling port.
Idk if you’re here but my house already has a router but my room is too far to connect an ethernet cord to my laptop, would I be able to buy this to be able to increase my ping? How would it work?
Well this would still connect to your computer via either net. It plugs into your router to give you more ports, then you would attache something to this box via either net. Sound like you might do better with a wifi mesh network. If you did that you could have one of the mesh nodes in your room and run either net right off of that.
So all my devices on this device are getting my 1 gig speed, EXCEPT for my PC. I'll then switch the cable from one device to another and still, only the PC is slow but the Mac and PS5 are getting all the juice, so that rules out the cables being the issue. Anyone know why my PC is having such slow internet when this thing is plugged in? (30 mbs v the gig my other devices get)

I am also interested in what type of security it has (if any, though PnP tells me probably not)? That would be important to me regardless of the brand of switch. Thanks in advance!
This is a plug and play device. At this level you are not going to have the options for manually adjusting QoS.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews That is what I figured, though some of them do talk about having QoS support, but it has to be turned on at the router, and not on the switch. Thanks for your response!
So is there any benefit or impact on how its setup? meaning using the link/act for the router cable vs using any of the other. Didn't see you tested that in the vid.
I didn't add it cuz I really didn't see any added benefit.
Thank you! About to install mine - was there any particular reason the "link/act" port is used for a NAS? Just wondering if it'll make a difference where it gets plugged into. Thanks again.
It does not. Mainly my own way of keeping track of things.
sorry im a bit confused. in my room i have 1 ethernet port. the router is on the other side of the house so i cant use there ports. could i use this spittler on my port in my room to connect multiple devices
In theory yes, however, I don't have a setup like that so I can not test to make sure.
Hey, I'm also having the same issue as you. Were you able to use this switch to add more devices?
So you go down from 219Mb/s to 160Mb/s when using this. Confused me more than helped unfortunately
The issue at the time of testing for me my ISP was supper unstable.
🇬🇧 cant wait to get going now, thanks really good, I paid £13.00 it was a steal. ... great job mate.
neil tighe £5 in Tescos for me ;D
Thank you for this video. A question for you - is it ok to connect this switch to a wifi extender, that works through power line adapter? Does it support?
It should, but I do not have that setup to actaul test it out. All I can say is Amzon as a very simple return policy.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews thank you for your reply. I will get one and test.
Thanks, I bought two of those, can I use it with link aggregation with Synology ds1520+?
That I am not sure about, and I can not test to say for myself.
Thanks for this review bro!
oh look who's here :o
Nice, comprehensive but simple review. Thanks G :)
I have a DLink one and it looks strikingly similar. I have a wire connected to the home network, but only 1 of my wired devices gets internet connection 🤷♂️
That does sound very odd. Do you have it going to the switch that you're describing?
@@Wanderer001_Reviews yeah, I suppose it's because I don't have a router in between.
@@GameRumble That would be it. You need to have the switch connected to a router not the modem.
My issue is that I use mesh and I need one additional cable for my vEdge work network. I tested this and it works. Moden ---> Switch --->1vEdge --->2 Mesh network. Is that ok? I wonder if I need to add a router.
I just bought this exact tp link... I was wanting to ultimately use OBS's "NDI Plug-in" to game on 1 pc while recording its screen using another seperate pc (both only connected via cat6 into switch with NO internet connection, router is to far to run a cable and my wifi is to unstable to use instead)... Just wondering if this switch requires actual internet connection (I have wifi6 on both pc's) to ultimately 'share large files' at 50mb+ speeds or is it really plug both pcs into switch only and all good?
Thanks heaps as this has been the only video that actually gives you the info you want and need!!! So thanks again 👌😎
Happy I was able to help.
Uhhhhhh, thanks for answering the question 🤔 and replying with an automated response 🤣👌
@@TheSharpy1012 It might seem like an automated response, but I actually do type that out each and every time.
I'll let u know if my idea works and if it worth while doing a tutorial video on my main channel for it
I missed that there was a question in there. This device should be called a splitter rather then a switch as it is designed to work in conjunction with internet. I'm not sure if it'll work with the particular setup you were describing.
Hey!
Thanks for the review!
However I saw on some reviews on Amazon, that power adapter produce some annoying sound.
Even though video is year old, do you remember if you had noticed something?
I still have it around and I can not day that I have noticed anything that I would discribe as an annoying sound coming from it.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews got it.
Thank you!
Can i connect the 105 switch directly to the cable modem, connect three other devices to the switch but without any router? Thanks for your vid you're are very good at this.
This does need to be used with a Wi-Fi router it cannot be plugged directly into the modem.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews I have been using wi-fi routers for way too many years and want to get rid of any wi-fi. Since even the unmanaged/dumb switches actually perform the operation of routing... do you know why the routher is necessary? I can't seem to think this through. thanks for your help.
@@ispadacenta4106 It is not managed so it does not have the brains to do what it does with out getting some information from the wifi router. Most wifi routers do let you at least turn off the wifi if that is what is bothering you.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews I just want to get rid of any wi-fi equipment and keep it simple. The 105 switch is supposed to utilize the mac address, and switches in general are routing ... that is pretty much their function as opposed to hubs. I of course could be wrong... i have been in the past. It just bugs me that i continue to manage my router and they do slow everything down and age. But i do thank your for your insight. good job wanderer001.
@@ispadacenta4106 If your ISP allows you multiple DHCP, for instance mine allows two IP addresses... ..when I connected this unmanaged switch directly to modem, i was able to get two unique dhcp ipv4 addresses for two desktops. Third device would not work unless one of the other two connected goes offline.
Just got my 10mbps University accommodation’s shitty wifi upgraded to a 85mbps with a tp link WiFi extender supplied by Ethernet through that switch 🔥
Thank you now I don't have to run 2 more 100+ ft cables under the floor while lying on the dirt
Thanks for the helpful video. We just purchased this because our Wi-Fi connection is very slow (45mbps) through our Comcast router, which is surprisingly supposed to be 1.3gbps. When connecting directly from the router to this computer (about 75 feet on cat7) I will get around 480-500mbps, but when the router is connected through this Hub the speed is only around 200mbps and I just do not understand why? All cables are brand new cat7 and are fully capable of handling up to 10 Gbps.
If the unit is controlled by your ISP they may not want you to be able to use your own stuff so they could be slowing things down.
great video but it did not age well. i just fired up my Wifi 6 and i am getting 1000gbps.
ah i miss the old days, when you were the first kid on the block with the most shiny upgrade ever. when i got 56k modem i was unbeatable in games. they were still on 28k modems :D
Thank you for breaking this down ✅💯
Happy to help.
How come mine hasn’t been plug and play? The only lights lighting are on the 5th port where I have directly hooked my router to. The other ports won’t light up or work, my router doesn’t even recognize this device at all; it’s as if it’s not there to begin with. Networks these days are such a pain the …..
I watched several videos where they said to use a router because a switch means you can get hacked very easily any thoughts on this thanks in advance...
Could you link a video about that? This switch is meant to be used with a router. That means the same protections you have from a router will be passed to this switch as well.
If this switch is connected to the router on the mesh network, will it see or exceed the speeds you were getting? I get about 380 Mbps down from my ISP. I was only going to connect my desktop to it.
Modem/router combo (in bridge mode) > TP-Link Deco X20 mesh router > switch > PC.
I'm assuming I'll get the full speed. Thoughts?
If it is part of a mesh you should get very close to full ISP speeds.
Thank you so much. Video and explanations are of great help .
hey the ethernet port going into my pc and router keeps double blinking green and im having some internet issues along with that with brief disconnects or lag in download speed and games. do you know hot to fix?
Thank you for the video. I was really puzzled though about your findings on the performance tests you ran. I mean, I would expect there to be some impact on adding a switch to the mix, but the drop from 219Mbps to 166Mbps seems way too much. That's a loss of roughly 25%! Are you sure one of the cables used in your test was in perfect working condition? Thank you.
It was a older cable, it also could vary based on network congestion.
Great review. I am wondering why when I plug into Link/Acct from my Archer router it does not work. Any thoughts?
Only that one?
Great video man. Had a quick question is this switch compatible with Cat8?
Well it should be compatible cat ate would be over till as a switch can only handle A maximum of 1 gigabit per second .
@@Wanderer001_Reviews thank you for the quick response. I’m trying to get the best connection from my router that gives off about 700MBs and connect it directly to my ps5,smart tv and my pc. That just happened to all be on the same wall. If you have any advice please send it my way. I haven’t gotten the cat8 cable but I was thinking for future proof that would be the way to go.
@@thatkidhector You should be fine with a Cat 6 cable. Cat8 is expansive for the speed you get from it. Based on the speed you are getting from your router Cat6 is more then enough.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews thanks man. You got just my sub, keep making those great videos.

So I just purchased a tp link s4 mesh wifi with optional Ethernet backhaul. Could I use this next to the main deco acting as the router and run my other deco units to this device? Thinking about how to set it up when I build my house
If I am understanding your question correctly...yes. With the caveat that this is only bases on the theoretical functionality of this switch. I don't have a setup that I can test myself to say for sure.
If I get this, should I:
modem --> this --> router
or
modem--> router --> this?
thanks!
modem--> router --> this.
So i bought one as I just moved into my house. Do I need a wifi router to install it? Or can I plug it in directly to my modem?
Would need a wifi router.
Hey thx for the video. Could you please let me know if I can connect this to the end of an Ethernet output coming from my modem in the basement, and then use the ports for additional connections? The cable from modem/router would be a regular lan output. Cheers!
Are you saying like ethernet output that is in the wall or just a cable coming right from the modem?
@@Wanderer001_Reviews the latter - one of the Ethernet cables coming out of the ‘router’ portion of my modem
If that is the case it should work.
Will this work if I only have a modem and no router. So it would be 1 WAN (Modem) to Multiple LAN Ports so I can connect multiple devices to the network at once?
If it is a modem router combo yes. If it is just a modem not so much.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews Yeah I assumed that. Thanks for the reply :) All I have atm was a modem and I was seeing if I could just get a switch for multiple devices but then it wouldent act as a WAN to LAN. So yea.
Can you connect the cable directly from the antenna or do you have to connect it to the router?
This needs a router to work.
1million likes if I can, for the point about the criticism, as it's just 4 ports to be used instead of the 5, as always one is an input.
Dear, sir please kindly clarify I have 5 port switch my switch model is TL-SG105.
Now which port I used input & output
Port-1
Port-2
Port-3
Port-4
Port-5
I used Deco M9 Plus(Pack-3) now My question is main Deco to which no of switch port used & slave Deco which no of switch port used?
Any port on the tp-link here can be used as an input or an output.
Nice video man. Could I use two things at once?
You can that is the point of something like this. I have a NAS, sound bar, and two streaming boxes running off this all that the same time.
Can you daisy chain 2 of these without issue? I want to use one next to the router and then have a long run of cable to another room. In the other room I want a second switch
You can, but there maybe a loss of speed depending on how far that cable has to travel to the other room.
Does it throttle other ports while in use? For instance, if I have 1gb internet and a source is using 1gb and I turn another on, will it split it 500/500 or will it give both 1gb?
Thanks
If using more then one device at a time then it would split your speed to 500/500.
Thanks so much this helped me set up mine
Happy to help.
Is using this better if i want to connect another router? Or should i just connect my new router directly to the original wifi router. (note: another wifi router is connected to our original router and i also want my own one for my room) pls help😣 thank you🙂
From the sounds of it you don't need a switch.
I’ve connected my wire in the wall to the Link port on this switch. The four remaining ports I have a Ethernet running from the switch to my laptop, all working fine. In another port on the switch, I have a mesh device connected. Problem here is the mesh device isn’t working. I’m trying to figure this out and all the technical guides are confusing to understand.
Is this the main mesh hub that you have plugged into this? Do you have a mesh device that is a modem/router in one? If not you would need to come off the modem first then into this which could be linked to your mesh device.
Thanks for your response, I appreciate it. I am not sure if its the main mesh hub. I live in a shared house with 4 floors. On each floor there are these mesh devices plugged in from the network wires in the wall. The routers are locked away in storage, so I have no idea of telling. If it helps, I am using a TP-Link SG105S switch and the mesh devices are UniFi 6 Lite devices.

I have a TP-Link wifi extender for my gaming room since the Wifi doesn't reach, can I connect this port to the wifi extender or does it need to be connected to the router specifically?
I do not have a Wi-Fi extender myself so I'm not able to test to tell you for sure. However I have tested this with a Wi-Fi mesh network node and it did work on one of the nodes that was not directly connected to the modem. Hope that helps.
Does this have to be plugged directly into a router? Or can I plug it into the Ethernet port in my wall and plug my devices into the switch itself
I have not tested it out myself however I do remember and commenter in a dorm room saying they were able to plug this in to the wall and use it. So in that instance it did not need to be plugged directly into the router.
Question?? Do I buy a shorty Ethernet cable to plug into the front of network switch box from Wi-Fi router, seeing the ethernet cable I pull out goes in back.
Yes that is correct.
I have this box in my garage with one of the ports on the box used connected to my Main Wi-Fi router in living room , 2 other ports are connected to some devices in garage but I then used one of the remaining ports as Wi-Fi extender booster so I could use Wi-Fi in garage for my iPhone but it seemed to affect my main Wi-Fi routers performance when I did that, any ideas? Thanks
What kind of extender was it, and how did it affect your main wifi router?
@@Wanderer001_Reviews thank you for responding. but is it also fine for me to bypass my wifi router and connect my desktop straight to the modem? (since there are 2 ethernet ports at the back of my modem)
So i am supposed to be able to use all ports at the same time? As in actively using 2 ports at the same time?
Yup.
can you do QoS on that thing? is there a menu somewhere to do it >?
This is a purely plug-and-play device. So there's no customization menus.
Good day, can you power this via USB power bank assuming you have a fitting adapter plug?
I do not see a reason why you could not. Just might need a very large power bank to keep it running.
That looks like a really old deck of Bikes. I guess they don't fan and flourish particularly well anymore.
It has seen better days.
I have data cabling throughout the house coming from my router connected to the fiber optic Australian Nation Broadband Network box. I plugged it into one of my ethernet ports and nothing.
Thanks for the comprehensive review.
Doesn't it affect speeds? My modem is in the living room and I'm running a 100ft Ethernet cord to WFH, but I'd like to hook up my Xbox, ect
Only a little. But I have run my PS4 using this switch.
(30 mbs v the gig my other devices get)
Older network plug on the laptop?
Just bought one of these to extend an ethernet cable cat5-e supplying poe cctv cameras. Doesn't seem to work. Is this particular switch poe compliant or ethernet only? I've spent hours googling and on youtube. Any answer would be appreciated.
Pretty sure this model does not support Poe. They have other higher-level versions that do.
