Hi. The "Link/Act" text on the fifth port means Link/Activity, and not Link/Account, and it refers to the indicator led on all the ports. It's only placed on top of port5 because of lack of space above the other ports
Sorry for bumping this comment but does that mean the 5th port is totally equal to other ones unlike what's being said in the video?

It functions like all the others. By convention, it is the one you use for uplink. I'm not sure if this has more capacity (it is a separate module after all), and therefore better suited for uplink. The module seperation is likely just because the port modules comes in 4-port and 1-port configurations. You'll see this in any switch and router
Link = Solid Activity = Flashing They just so happen to put it over the last port's led. And the last port isn't joined with the rest since they're not grouped in 5's. All the ports are equal. It just appears to stand out because of these reasons.

"Link Account port" LOL. that is just the label of all the LEDs (link/activity). On a domestic unmanaged switch all ports are the same, you just create the habit to use the first or last port to use as uplink to a router, sort of mimicking what you do on an enterprise switch that usually uses the last port as uplink, some models even have a separate uplink port.

So I just purchased a tp link s4 mesh wifi with optional Ethernet backhaul. Could I use this next to the main deco acting as the router and run my other deco units to this device? Thinking about how to set it up when I build my house
If I am understanding your question correctly...yes. With the caveat that this is only bases on the theoretical functionality of this switch. I don't have a setup that I can test myself to say for sure.
I don’t have a wifi router. I have a modem directly connected to my pc through an ethernet. The problem is that I only have 1 port on my modem. This results in my only being able to use my internet access on one device. Will this device allow me to use multiple ethernets with working internet access?
@@Wanderer001_Reviews I'm sorry I'm just a bit confused. So this should help my situation is what you are saying??? I don't want to order something that won't be of use to me.
Yes it should. As long as the modem has a router built in as well. This needs to be plugged into a router in order to spilt the signal. If you plug it into just a modem it will not work.
Ya just marketing. Rule of thumb, they'll always try to make themselves look more special than they really are when selling to the general public. You'll see it ALOT on Amazon, eBay etc...
I have a TP-Link wifi extender for my gaming room since the Wifi doesn't reach, can I connect this port to the wifi extender or does it need to be connected to the router specifically?
I do not have a Wi-Fi extender myself so I'm not able to test to tell you for sure. However I have tested this with a Wi-Fi mesh network node and it did work on one of the nodes that was not directly connected to the modem. Hope that helps.
Idk if you’re here but my house already has a router but my room is too far to connect an ethernet cord to my laptop, would I be able to buy this to be able to increase my ping? How would it work?
Well this would still connect to your computer via either net. It plugs into your router to give you more ports, then you would attache something to this box via either net. Sound like you might do better with a wifi mesh network. If you did that you could have one of the mesh nodes in your room and run either net right off of that.
Will this work if I only have a modem and no router. So it would be 1 WAN (Modem) to Multiple LAN Ports so I can connect multiple devices to the network at once?
@@Wanderer001_Reviews Yeah I assumed that. Thanks for the reply :) All I have atm was a modem and I was seeing if I could just get a switch for multiple devices but then it wouldent act as a WAN to LAN. So yea.
I had this working plug and play, but then noticed my speed had dropped some months later - i went direct to router and it was as it should be. Then plugged back to the switch to compare and i can't get an internet connection now. I changed nothing, literally just unplugged ethernet on back of pc tried another then back to original. Have reset everything in every order, checked all connections, reinstalled network card, tried manually setting IPs, still nothing.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews yes it was all ports; I woke up today and it miraculously worked - so I am extremely confused about the outage haha. I'm now thinking the speed drop when using the switch could be down to me incorrectly crimping the RJ45 onto a cat6 cable which is limiting speed - the cables from switch to devices were all pre made so think i can rule them out
So I've got a cable that goes out from the phone one is coming from the wall and the 3rd one is connected to the router. I used splitter, it had 3 connectors and everything was working Today I bought this switch and can't get it to work. Help?
What type of cables are you working with? COAX, CAT, ect? Switches run by running CAT cable from your router to the switch with then lets you add more CAT cable connections to the switch.
What if i’m purely doing this for console debugging? I don’t really need to worry about my internet but I do want my consoles connected to my computer.

hey the ethernet port going into my pc and router keeps double blinking green and im having some internet issues along with that with brief disconnects or lag in download speed and games. do you know hot to fix?
Can you daisy chain 2 of these without issue? I want to use one next to the router and then have a long run of cable to another room. In the other room I want a second switch
Does it throttle other ports while in use? For instance, if I have 1gb internet and a source is using 1gb and I turn another on, will it split it 500/500 or will it give both 1gb? Thanks
Hey thx for the video. Could you please let me know if I can connect this to the end of an Ethernet output coming from my modem in the basement, and then use the ports for additional connections? The cable from modem/router would be a regular lan output. Cheers!

Hello, I would like to kindly ask. I've purchased Switch TP-Link TL-SG105 5 port, Gigabit, and used it as an extension/multiplication of wired ethernet connection. The issue is that IPTV is not working while connected via the switch. To elaborate, when the set-top box is connected directly from the router, works without any problem. When I connect this switch to the router and then connect the set-top box from the switch, IPTV is not working. It has happened a few times that IPTV worked while connected via this switch, but went I turned off the tv in the evening and turned it back on in the following morning, it was not working again. Any thoughts? Thank you in advance.
This might sound odd but what type of CAT cable do you have going to your IPTV box? I did find that the switch could be a little finicky with types of cables.
I'm current using 2 wifi routers, one is used as a switch only. The master one configures the IPs and the second one is just a dump switch. My question is, if i assign an IP to a MAC address on my master wifi router and then connect the router to the switch and my PC to this switch, will this solution work for me ? I'm using my PC as a NAS and KODI is connecting via fixed IP address.
What you're looking for might be a little Beyond what this switch can handle. This is really meant to just be a plug-and-play option. However tp-link does offer other switches that offer configurability unlike this one.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews I mean the Wifi router controls the IP to Mac binding, so this switch should technically work. I'm not a expert but ye. In principle it sounds like it should work but not being able to test a similar set up I did not want to say yes and have you spend money without knowing for sure.

I’ve got a long Ethernet wire which is connected to the router and runs down to the basement if I connect the Ethernet cable to this box and then use another Ethernet cable coming out of this box to connect to the PS4 will it work and have good stable connection?
It depends on how far from the router your cable has to extend, and what type of cable you're using. Cat 6 for instance can go 300 feet and still maintain it's 1 gigabit throughput without loss. So if this is the case then yes your describe setup should work.
does it work if i have a lan cable comin through the router trough this and then plug another 3 lan cables coz i have 15meters lan cable comin through the router and then i split it to lets say my pc and consoles
So is there any benefit or impact on how its setup? meaning using the link/act for the router cable vs using any of the other. Didn't see you tested that in the vid.
Generally for home use cat 8 cable is overkill . Most of the time you can get away with Cat6 cable . But if you have it and it's a short distance Between your Comcast Gateway and the switch then your cat 8 cable should be fine .

Just got one for myself, looking forward to a more robust network. Great video dude.
This will let you plug in multiple devices to to it off of the original one connection point.
Ok thanks. I was confused on why they call it 5 when it’s really 4. Only video or resource I’ve found that clearly says it
Ya just marketing.
I'm using an old netgear n300 router as a wired switch. If I ever need something gigabit, I'll definitely get one of these
Will this work if I only have a modem and no router. So it would be 1 WAN (Modem) to Multiple LAN Ports so I can connect multiple devices to the network at once?
If it is a modem router combo yes. If it is just a modem not so much.
Is it all ports on the tp link?
@@Wanderer001_Reviews yes it was all ports; I woke up today and it miraculously worked - so I am extremely confused about the outage haha. I'm now thinking the speed drop when using the switch could be down to me incorrectly crimping the RJ45 onto a cat6 cable which is limiting speed - the cables from switch to devices were all pre made so think i can rule them out
Can you connect it directly to the Ethernet, then connect a WiFi router out of it?
Ik u posted this a month ago but yes you can don’t know why u would but yes
@@reptic1823 maybe to extend wifi
The link/act label on your switch stands for link/activity not link /account also it's telling you what those little lights on each port is for.
So I've got a cable that goes out from the phone
one is coming from the wall and the 3rd one is connected to the router.
I used splitter, it had 3 connectors and everything was working
Today I bought this switch and can't get it to work.
Help?
What type of cables are you working with? COAX, CAT, ect? Switches run by running CAT cable from your router to the switch with then lets you add more CAT cable connections to the switch.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews nah I'm dumb.
I thought Ethernet switch could connect with dsl cable but not ethernet cable. My bad lol...
i need 1, do i have any internet speed losses with this? i have a Rj45 now and it reduces my internet speed on my devices
If you have multiple devices connected to this you may see things slow down a little.
What if i’m purely doing this for console debugging? I don’t really need to worry about my internet but I do want my consoles connected to my computer.
Should be ok.
Just bought one of these to extend an ethernet cable cat5-e supplying poe cctv cameras. Doesn't seem to work. Is this particular switch poe compliant or ethernet only? I've spent hours googling and on youtube. Any answer would be appreciated.
Pretty sure this model does not support Poe. They have other higher-level versions that do.
hey the ethernet port going into my pc and router keeps double blinking green and im having some internet issues along with that with brief disconnects or lag in download speed and games. do you know hot to fix?
Can you daisy chain 2 of these without issue? I want to use one next to the router and then have a long run of cable to another room. In the other room I want a second switch
You can, but there maybe a loss of speed depending on how far that cable has to travel to the other room.
Can you connect the cable directly from the antenna or do you have to connect it to the router?
This needs a router to work.
think this would work with a Dot using a meshforce m3 wifi system?
As long as one of the nodes you are trying to use this with has an open LAN port on the back you can use this with it.
Does it throttle other ports while in use? For instance, if I have 1gb internet and a source is using 1gb and I turn another on, will it split it 500/500 or will it give both 1gb?
Thanks
If using more then one device at a time then it would split your speed to 500/500.
Hey thx for the video. Could you please let me know if I can connect this to the end of an Ethernet output coming from my modem in the basement, and then use the ports for additional connections? The cable from modem/router would be a regular lan output. Cheers!
Are you saying like ethernet output that is in the wall or just a cable coming right from the modem?
@@Wanderer001_Reviews the latter - one of the Ethernet cables coming out of the ‘router’ portion of my modem
If that is the case it should work.
Thank you for this video. A question for you - is it ok to connect this switch to a wifi extender, that works through power line adapter? Does it support?
It should, but I do not have that setup to actaul test it out. All I can say is Amzon as a very simple return policy.

Hi, I have the gs105 v5 model, can it be rotated so that the cable connections are at the back and not the front?
Not sure as I do not have the v5.
The second wifi router that i'm using as a switch has everything in it disabled, it doesn't control IPs or anything, just passes packets around. I'm not using the WAN port. Looking for a cheap solution to get gigabit upstairs where i don't need wifi.
In principle it sounds like it should work but not being able to test a similar set up I did not want to say yes and have you spend money without knowing for sure.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews Just to let you know, i got the TL-SG105E for its "smart" features if i need to configure anything. I just plugged it in and it worked. The downstairs router DHCP with IP bniding worked.
Wil this work with the Cox Gigablast? It only has 2 ports on the back :(
Yes it should.
Wanderer001 Thank you!
does it work if i have a lan cable comin through the router trough this and then plug another 3 lan cables coz i have 15meters lan cable comin through the router and then i split it to lets say my pc and consoles
Yes, that is what this thing was made for.

So is there any benefit or impact on how its setup? meaning using the link/act for the router cable vs using any of the other. Didn't see you tested that in the vid.
I didn't add it cuz I really didn't see any added benefit.
Hi, I need some help here. I have 3 cat8 cables I acquired so I figure why not use them. What cable do I use from my Comcast gateway to the switch?
Generally for home use cat 8 cable is overkill . Most of the time you can get away with Cat6 cable . But if you have it and it's a short distance Between your Comcast Gateway and the switch then your cat 8 cable should be fine .

I was also wondering if it’s okay to have 2 next gen consoles off the 2 Ethernet/rear gateway? I was told it’s a bridged connection and even though it’s 2 ports, it’s like 1 port. I didn’t know if me and my son would contradict each other over traffic at times.

Will this splitter also works when I put before modem. I want connection going to router into multiple Ethernet ports
This spliter has to be used after the modem.
Out of interest. Do the LEDs indicate what speed its set at? Eg: Green for megabit, orange for gigabit?
They do but it's the other way around green is your fastest and oranges you're slower setting.

Hi, I had a question. Is this good for a mining rig? My modem has only 2 slots for ethernet, both are being used already. Also, how does it work if it isn't connecting to the modem? Sorry if thats a silly question.
Can not say for sure never tested it for that. Handles gaming fine so I would imagine mining would not be an issue.
Noobie question here. My cable modem from my ISP has 2 ethernet ports (A and B) at the back. Is it perfectly fine for my desktop pc to directly connect to ethernet port A and have my wifi router to occupy ethernet port B? what are the implications, pros and cons of this setup? thanks in advance for your response.
So in a set up like mine where my modem only as 2 port out that is connected to my wifi router I would have a desk top plugged into my wifi router. The more things that you run wired to your wifi router the faster you run out of plugs. This switch lets you add more wired connections should you run out of them.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews thank you for responding. but is it also fine for me to bypass my wifi router and connect my desktop straight to the modem? (since there are 2 ethernet ports at the back of my modem)
I purchased this from Amazon z ($15.00) . I have a 1gb connection at home and my direct wired test shows 992 mbps down and 913 mbps up. When I connect my PC to one of the 4 free ports, I can only get 50-60 mbps u/d. This speed transfer to any of the 4 ports and (CAT8 through Netgear Nighthawk WF-5)...Just tossing it out here.
Anything else running off of it at the same time?
Does this have to be plugged directly into a router? Or can I plug it into the Ethernet port in my wall and plug my devices into the switch itself
I have not tested it out myself however I do remember and commenter in a dorm room saying they were able to plug this in to the wall and use it. So in that instance it did not need to be plugged directly into the router.
Does it split the bandwidth? I have 1gbit cat6 cable, and 480mbps service, but i want to plug it in to the switch and then to my 2 consoles and smart tv
It's not quite as cut-and-dry as just splitting bandwidth. It will send more to the device that is requesting more.

You would need to have the wan going from a modem to a router first before plugging into this.

It should. I know there was a college student that was going to use it in their dorm that way.
im not really sure how to use it because my router is directly far from my system so i thought i just directly plug the lan cable into the port and the system but am i wrong?
