  • Home Tech Adventure shows 3 different methods for how to make an ethernet cable longer. Method #1 is buying a longer ethernet cable or buying cable in bulk and making your own custom cable. Method #2 is not recommended except as an emergency method. Method #3 is an easy and useful way to make an ethernet cable longer. There is one more bonus method at the end of the video.

    After watching this do you want to know how to make your own ethernet cable by crimping your own ethernet cable ends? Watch my video on the topic here: th-cam.com/video/Fbq4zVtMU8Q/w-d-xo.html

      After watching this video I question the advice of twisting cables together - a big no-no in networking. Punched down/Crimped/Keystone only but I like the alternative keystones on offer - should of extended the face plate to a keystone patch panel however this is what removed the thumbs down on your video. No affiliate links for those keystones you showed?

    Thanks. That was exactly what I needed to know so I can move my router out of the basement by extending the cable that Verizon brought in there without messing with there equipment or wire. A combination of method two and three will work for me. Perfect.

    Great information 😅 We were actually thinking that the first method was the necessary way to get extended cable wire connection. 😮

    I am putting a cat 5E cable into a conduit so will not have any space for a cuppler. I will need to do the bare wire method but are there any problems with doing this or is it just frowned upon?

    • @jdilksjr
      @jdilksjr ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just added noise and slower speeds due to loss of twist. Also, you should not put splices inside of a conduit.

    I want to add that many small ethernet switches can be powered by POE. Most will require purchasing a POE splitter so you can power the ethernet switch. This can be very useful when using a switch in an attic or other location where there are no power outlet.

    UTP are twisted wires, if you untwist it just 10mm then it will noise the installation and low internet speed.

    • @hometechadventure4462
      @hometechadventure4462  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It will not work long term or at high speed. Also, if there is a lot of electronic interference in the room, it is less likely to work. The wires in the ethernet cable are twisted and packaged specifically to help reject interference and removing this negates the purpose. The other methods preserve the integrity of the connection.

    QUESTION: regarding the coupler, do CAT 5 & CAT 6 use the same?? THANK U

    • @hometechadventure4462
      @hometechadventure4462  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The connectors on the ends of the wires are the same, so any ethernet coupler should work with either one. The couplers are generally listed as supporting either CAT5 or CAT6. If you use a CAT5 coupler with a CAT6 system, you may not be able to achieve the maximum CAT6 speeds, but the connection will still work.

    For method 2 do you connect both of the wires or only one

    • @hometechadventure4462
      @hometechadventure4462  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think you mean to say, can you connect one ethernet cable to two cables. This will not work well! Use a switch if you need to connect one incoming line to two ethernet cables.
