  • In this Episode of Cecil's Shade Tree Garage I show you how to remove a set of breaker points and condenser from a 1970s Rotax ski doo . In this video I remove the flywheel and then remove the starting cup, next the fan belt, then I remove the fan tower and remove the breaker points, then I un- solder the condensers.

I just got a couple 440 Skidoos and they've been sitting for a long time. I pulled one carburetor off and it was clean and the fuel smelled good. I was wondering what I'd find when I checked for spark. Now I know, when I find there's no spark, (Which I expect) what my next step will be.
Thanks for a very informative and well-made tutorial!
One of the440s is going to end up on a go kart.

Hello Daryl, thanks...those 440 engines produce a lot of hp when tuned up. I'm glad you liked the video. You have a great day. Cheers!

Great Video. I just purchased an old 79' Everest 444 Liquid Cooled. It has been sitting for a few years. I cleaned the tank and carb today. Going to replace fuel lines tomorrow. Hopefully she will spring to life.

Looks like people are enjoying your new channel Cecil. I'm not a motor head, but Im pretty good at taking things apart. It's the putting em back together that's the problem. My wife says it's just because I have 2 to many thumbs.

And when there is no camera, things go seamlessly/lol, I expected something to go in the tea cup just to add to the frustration but it went well. When I was still able to wrench and I loved that so much as it made me want to do more things. It just doesn't get any easier than the old rigs to diagnose the problem then go right to it. I think you might chuckle at this. I had a great customer who for all purposes couldn't wind a watch and he really was in a tough spot just limping his old rusty Subaru into my shop to find me busy and his face fell as far as the jaw can go. I said whats the problem Roger? He said I'm supposed to be somewhere an hour ago and I just have to deliver this and your busy so I'm screwed.... Ah buddy lets look see what it is, probably simple fix and he sputters its shaking and I barely got here with it. I told him grab us both a coffee out of the pot and we will take it in stride. Don't shoot the horse yet. So I look and the typical rear wheel bearing is out and just grinding on the axle. I tell him I told you so, simple fix, we'll give ere a splint and she can walk on three legs just joking with him and he says; YOU can do that? Wow. Like you people are sensitive, so I go out to my subaru junk pile where I have saved parts for a day like this. I grab one out that will replace it and a few tools as its a easy repair if you just take a big chunk out. I ask him to grab my floor jack and I grab like four or five simple tools and its kinda dark outside so he brings me a light cord (droplight) with the hook on the end of it to hang it on something. Hes helping on the simple things he knows so he jacks that corner up where I tell him to. I needed both hands to drive the roll pin out of the cv axle, first big piece, and so here is where you will laugh... like I said, needed both hands and to hold the light too so I take the drop light with the metal hook and just punch it through the side of this rusty old car and it will now hold itself and I roll under and knock the pin out buzz three bolts off the trailing arm and one small bolt that keeps it in lead. A very simple deal really.I spin the brake line loose and its out ready for the other one and I turn to him to tell him use my air gun and buzz the wheel off when I saw his face in shock! You poked a hole in my car and I tell him it matches the other holes just above it Rodger.. its a tiny hole compared to those wind whistles. This car reminds me of a flute it has so many holes in it,.. then he started to laugh and we were good again and by the time he had the wheel lugs ... four of them off I have the other under it ready for the wheel. Those little impact wrenches have saved a lot of scraped knuckles and bloody hands. I had him going in about ten minutes on my part but he is holding up the parade so I wheel the tire over and spin it on bing bing and let the jack down and said good to go Roger. He had been there less than a half hour and his car is a driver again so every time he came in the shop he would tell some customer about the time I poked a hole in his fender/LOL, I cried almost, it was just too funny!!!
You asked how I'm doing and just wishing I could work but the nerves in my feet are burning coals of hell. I will lose them I am afraid but cross that bridge when it gets here. I'm fine as long as I get to look at my computer and talk to people again. Everything is fubar but good too

Do you know if these motors can be run out of the body or does it require the wiring harness to start and run. I have an old sled with a good motor and I'm wondering if the motor is worth saving or Is it unless

Hello Denny, I am not sure as this model engine has a mechanical spark advance on the flywheel. Cheers.
