@BSTARR600 Ya i have had the same thing happen, I keep a rebuilt carb here ready for the start of the year, then I rebuild the other one and put it on when it doesn;t work - I keep doing that until it stops working for real. Try tapping on the carb with a hammer next time it won't start - it almost always works.
@elanboys You can probably get away with not having the washer, you should put a NEW fuel pump kit in the order I had shown - then you won't have problems, or at least put your old kit in the way I showed you and see what happens. But, if you don't remove the welch plugs and complete the full service then chances are things won't work perfectly. Thanks for watching!
that's a tough one, you can use a mikuni but very hard to tune up. I have always made the tilly work just fine, did you change the ball valve? It can be the problem most of the time as well. Are you near ottawa - bring it over and I'll rebuild it for you.
Hi do you know where i can get a hold of these small things for a Tillotson HD 25? 1. PLUG SCREW - BODY CHANNEL 2. SPRING - INLET SCREEN RETAINER 3 . SCREEN - INLET
@kaaite1 one that is good??? LOL< no where. The recent carb kits are all chinese crap and are useless. You need to find an old service shop and buy a kit from them.
@BSTARR600 Could be all kinds of things, change the plug, if it's an NGK they can just die from being wet with gas from flooding. I suspect your engine is very flooded now so make sure there is no fuel in the crank case - pull off your carb pulse line and pull it over - make sure no gas is coming out the pulse port when you pull it over. If you flood it you can hold the throttle wide open and pull until it clears and starts up. with the carb off will it start with a spray bottle of gas?
@belairlover93 Yes you do have to worry about TOO MUCH fuel in the crankcase - this gives you a rich mixture that will not burn ie. flooded. If it is flooded you need to clear the excess fuel out and make it so the mixture is able to burn - that is what a carb does when running properly.
@lshobie if you didnet know a 2 stroke you dont have to worry about the gass going in the crank case its a 2 stroke thats where it goes its not like a 4 stroke that it mixes with the oil because the oil in a 2 stroke is in the gas
Don't forget the butterfly valves only go back in one way. If you look closely, there is an angled edge on them so they can seat in the carburetor bore properly. Thanks for the great video!
I have a Tillotson hd73a carb that i just installed a new kit using your video and everything looks good but on the side of the carb is what looks like a 90 degree fuel line barb that has a pin hole opening. when when fuel line is hooked up to the bottom of the carb gas shoots out of the pin hole of the 90 degree fitting. could you please tell me what this is and how to hook up
Great Video! Just got Tillotson HD54B in the shop. Owner claims he didn't take it apart. On disassembly there was no gasket between diaphragm and carb body. Any reason the gasket would have not be put in? Never had any 2 cycle without one.
PowerModz yep its an elan 250 twin.. when u hit high rpms seems to go away ill try idle jet u mean the low speed jet? I also looked the carb up it seems to be off a 440 plus oylimpic hr 171a
Howdy Shobie hows it going dude ?I was wondering whats the Carb number in the vid? is that a HR133A? From a old elan? year 1971? thanks bud also how many fuel lines does it have? three? thanks Sledrat
would this apply to a KeiHin carb as well? My son has a vintage '72 rupp yankee with a KeiHin carb in it. When I do the research I see it looks like it belongs on a PWC. Is this even the right kind of carb to put onto the sled?
hey are all tillitsons similar? I got a hd134a here I notice some things are different what about fuel pump gaskets?I notice you have one between the carb and diaphragm and first medal piece if this is needed on my hd, guess I just found why my sled doesn't run good thanks great video
my friend got a tillotson from his elan 250, that runs good but not on full throttle. it bogs down like i not gets fuel as is should, is got a new nedle and seat, checked that ball walve dont get whats wrong?
@lshobie well i took the carb off and it started right up off the bottle, so i took the carb apart and everything looked fine put it back together and put it on and now it works great, these darn tillotsons can be real finiky sometimes lol
i just rebuilt mine, adjusted the carb to what the manual says and cant get it to start, just sputter and a fair bit of gas comes out the carb, any thoughts on what could be the problem?
First of great video. In the rebuilding of my HD 73A I unfortunately damaged the jet and seal as it was totally unmovable but got removed by carefully drilling it out - I have same issue with a HD 83A so it will stay in place vs damaging. Got any idea where to get a replacement believe it is a specifically a grosse jet tilloston 07-411. Also what socket size are did you side to remove the needle seat its something I can seem to locate in my tool box or Canadian Tire. Thanks
they are a good carb...i've had a few that i couldn't get the jets set even after a rebuild . 9 out of 10 times after a rebuild if ya still can't get it set its the brass throttle butterfly is loose in the bore ..had the same problem with chainsaws
Thanks for posting ...the ONLY video I could find here on TH-cam on how to disassemble & reassemble one of the Tillotson carburetors . This video made it look easy .
Thank you for this video. This helped me do my carb for an old 399 olympique. Other than the high speed screw, everything was identical. You saved the winter!
I've got a classic skidoo 440 Rotax carb that needs to be rebuilt that looks very similar to the one you rebuilt. I can't find a rebuild kit anywhere online or any fuel filters. Where did you get those parts?
I just got my first Tilly today.. It's an HR with a separate fuel pump on a 75 Moto Ski Nuvik 300.. I'm sure this video will come in handy at some point....
Hey i been a subscriber for a while now and i was wondering if there is a certain way too zinc your carburetor or can they just be at the same settings
Great video! Im currently rebuilding a HD 39A that was on a 74 panther 340 i bought. only i notice different about mine is the check valve is like a small brass tube. I'm not sure how to remove it. Was wondering if your are familiar with that. thanks.
Hey Louie! I’m really glad you made videos like these. Nobody else does ‘em. Thanks buddy. I’m restoring an elan from scratch with a 318ccm motor. No idea what it’s from. But I’m going from mikuni Carb to a Tillotson carb. Probably a common problem but I’m trying to figure out the fuel hookups. Someone said that 90deg pinhole is a fuel return. How exactly does that go back to the tank? Where does it hook to on the tank? Hope you’ll see This and help me out. Really appreciate it.
Hi Tillotson! Thanks for checking out my videos - will do and I'll mention that in my next tilly video.
@BSTARR600 Ya i have had the same thing happen, I keep a rebuilt carb here ready for the start of the year, then I rebuild the other one and put it on when it doesn;t work - I keep doing that until it stops working for real. How do the hoses go back on trying to figure that out new to this kind of carb
Hi do you know where i can get a hold of these small things for a Tillotson HD 25? 1. PLUG SCREW - BODY
CHANNEL
2. SPRING - INLET SCREEN
RETAINER
3 . SCREEN - INLET

the crank is filled with fuel - so it's flooded, hold the throttle wide open and bull like a bugger - or let it sit over night.
@BriansFarm Yes most tillys are the same, if you need some parts let me know as I have a bunch for HD's and HR's
@gumpit1 yes it goes down the hole and compresses slightly when you turn the seat in.
@dustin9000 ya i'll doo a mikinui vid this summer, make sure you subscribe!
i had to grind a socket to fit in there, i think it is an 8mm. you might try ec carburetor on line for parts.
@norsemomof2 the cleaning should be similar, but ca't say for sure as I know very little about Rupp sleds.
is it leaning or too rich? check the plug and that will tell you. check the whole carb, blow out with compressed air.
@MEATgolber look on the flange of the carb - it will have a letter and number stamped in the side of it.
@mustang66022 Thanks very much for that, and thanks for watching, and your support.
@elanboys or idling it is the low speed jet, turn it out 3/4 of a turn and that should work fine.
@indyman151 a full kit for a carb should be about 20-40 bucks.
if it is bad i do, if not carb cleaner does a good job.
@indyman151 no sorry i dont - try ec carburetors.
do a search for the elan teshio board - and check the carb data.
@1969Rotax Pas de probleme! I think that means "no problem at all!" Bonne chance!
hmm, do a search on teshio elan board - they have all the carb settings for each year.
yes - the needle is stuck open - you need to rebuild the carb.
@lshobie if you didnet know a 2 stroke you dont have to worry about the gass going in the crank case its a 2 stroke thats where it goes its not like a 4 stroke that it mixes with the oil because the oil in a 2 stroke is in the gas

Thanks for the great video!
LOL, Al Gore hadn't even discovered the interweb back then:)
hmm, that is probably off my 250 single or twin.
I have a Tillotson hd73a carb that i just installed a new kit using your video and everything looks good but on the side of the carb is what looks like a 90 degree fuel line barb that has a pin hole opening. when when fuel line is hooked up to the bottom of the carb gas shoots out of the pin hole of the 90 degree fitting. could you please tell me what this is and how to hook up
It's a return fuel line goes back to gas tank
@Forum356 lol, I was waiting for that comment!
@BSTARR600 Very cool old sled!
@shumpy Thanks!
yes for sure.
@vort88 Thanks!
yes

Check valve stuck.
most likely yes.
my tillotson is an HR 169a. it does not have the whole "pump" assembly on the bottom, nor does it have a choke butterfly. I am stumped
Hello!
Saw you switch the needle to another one with a fork,, does that works? 😮
I rebuilt my tilly with your vid it purs like a kitten great video I still have a low speed bogg with fine mist of gas puking out carb any thoughts?
is it a twin? you have to set your idle jet. gas on your coat - welcome to tilly
PowerModz yep its an elan 250 twin.. when u hit high rpms seems to go away ill try idle jet u mean the low speed jet? I also looked the carb up it seems to be off a 440 plus oylimpic hr 171a
A lot of pieces. Just the jets would help
Where would u buy this carb kit at?
Where was this video 30 years ago, lol. I had quite a few of the old olympic 399cc sleds. I was always having carb problems. Great video.
You da man! Great vid bud!
Howdy Shobie hows it going dude ?I was wondering whats the Carb number in the vid? is that a HR133A?
From a old elan? year 1971? thanks bud also how many fuel lines does it have?

Hi bro, I think Im too much late.
I need rebuild kit,
FUEL filter
And some other parts, could you please help me???
ya for sure but covid19 has shut everything down -for us can you go to my website www.powermodz.com in about 3 weeks and try then!
Could you tell me about the washer on the needle seat? Does it go down in the hole and form to the bottom or does it go over the threads?
o.k. Lets assume this carb. is bad. What can I replace it with that is available and cheap? I give up on this one.
Nice video. A little Locktite on screws for the choke and throttle shutter will help ensure a strong hold in case the threads are a little worn.
they are a good carb...i've had a few that i couldn't get the jets set even after a rebuild . 9 out of 10 times after a rebuild if ya still can't get it set its the brass throttle butterfly is loose in the bore ..had the same problem with chainsaws
Hey Louie! I emailed you about these carb kits. Do you still have them? More specifically HR73A
Where could I find a carb kit for the same carb in the video whit everything you show in the video and how much would it be. Thanks
This is a great video. I still seem to have the same issue after rebuilding. When the motor cranks gas shoots out the vent fitting. Any ideas?
I remember them
Very nice video buddy!! You very help me with your clean end clear rebuilt video. Now I am able to rebuilt my tillotson HD86A on my 440 bse engine!!!
I have a question my 1976 olimpique 440 almost floods itself within 5 pulls have any ideas?
One more thing do you know what the carbs model # it would be for a 1978 elan 250 twin
I've got a classic skidoo 440 Rotax carb that needs to be rebuilt that looks very similar to the one you rebuilt. I can't find a rebuild kit anywhere online or any fuel filters. Where did you get those parts?
@lshobie I need a kit for an hp 5a tillotson. the carb is from the 50s
Thank you for this video because in 12 have a 70's elan and in the only mechanic in the family
Would a stuck check valve cause fuel to come spraying out the vent nipple?
Omg I'm never get a sled with that carb....can u do a mikuni carbon vid.thx.
Basically I NEED ANYTHING that will work on a KOHLER 295-2AX....
@farlinj if you dont have the real wrench to remover the right bolt you have to use a flat screwdriver and a hammer and tap and unscrew the bolt
Is this the Tillotson HR or the tillotson HD??? i thank i got the wrong carb kit for my elan
how much is one of thoes kits wourth for one of thoes carbs?
@ulhthunder
Hello, I need parts too, any answer ?? Thanks
thanks for the vid, i have a 72 ski-whiz that needs some carb work, now im just going to rebuild it
I like the porn groove music too!! Informative vid Thanks!!
If the lever arm isn't flush do you adjust it by tightening/loosening the screw holding the fulcrum arm or by bending the lever arm?
Awesome video. I have a vintage Chrysler Snorunner with a Tillotson carburetor, and this helps greatly with the carb rebuild.
Do u know how many turns out for the stock setting is?
I just got my first Tilly today.. It's an HR with a separate fuel pump on a 75 Moto Ski Nuvik 300.. I'm sure this video will come in handy at some point....
Where can we get a complete Tillotson carb kit?
Did you also soak the pump assembly overnight?
What exactly did you pull your carb off of?
I am talking about the carb itself.
Hey i been a subscriber for a while now and i was wondering if there is a certain way too zinc your carburetor or can they just be at the same settings
Extremely good info and very well done. Thanks a lot of good info. WELL DONE !
how do u install the gas tank to this carb im confused
Nice vid but where can you get that kit??
@powermodz
How do you remove the carb off the sled? Pull the side fan cover off?
Thanks great vids
If your unsure of how to remove it off the sled in the first place then you shouldn't be taking it apart lol
Great video, but at what point can we lose the rubber gloves?
Great video! Im currently rebuilding a HD 39A that was on a 74 panther 340 i bought. only i notice different about mine is the check valve is like a small brass tube. I'm not sure how to remove it. Was wondering if your are familiar with that. thanks.
No Idea actually
I junked mine and replaced it with a Mikuni. Very happy with the outcome.
What type of Mikuni carb did you use & was the Tillotson carb an HR series ?
Glad to help, youll have to put a return spigot in the tank - put the hose into the bottom of the tank
Thanks good vid I needed the order of the gasket layers. Clear short and simple!
i sell them if you need!
That's on the low speed needle*
do you stock them?
