    What should I replace under the timing cover? Full build here th-cam.com/play/PLmCz8Lio03_mhIcErCZW7AlOO4wEysrpQ.html

    I literally just did this. My crank bolt didn't give me a problem anything like yours did. 😮
    Get the Aisin kit. It's all Japanese bearings and is recommended by my favorite online Subie mechanis, so thumbs up there.
    I only did the timing belt on mine. I may regret it later, but everything looked good and I'm already out of my element. I did have to replace the front and back timing belt covers on one side as mine were broken. Be careful getting the exhaust cam gears off. The wrench slips easily and chews up the, uh, teeth on the front.

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yah that wrench ate one of my gears and the other one was damaged from previous owner. Some shops replace all the gears with every build! I want to trust the Aisin kit but I keep thinking OEM for peace of mind. But oem is twice as much!!!

    • @ericlanam4265
      @ericlanam4265 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrSubaru1387 did a vid on the Aisin kit. It's all the same parts as the OEM - with the exception that the belt is a Mitsuboshi instead of a rebranded Mitsuboshi.

    Ive built countless ej engines....you will regret not doing a full timing kit while you're in there! oil pump, water pump, front crank seal, the rod pin block holes, and cam seals as well. sounds pricey but will save you down the line for sure! I've learned that the hard way both personally and professionally.

      The Mira Image Media I agree! Was not going to touch the cam seals but why not, I’m there. I am considering the Aisin kit but should I trust it? Do I just bite the bullet and buy all OEM? $$$

      The Mira Image Media what do you think of oem belt vs Kevlar? I don’t think they stretch and need servicing more often? RCM seems to be the same as other Japanese kits but you pick your belt option.

    The crank bolt can be broken loose by using a 24" long (if I recall correctly) 1/2" breaker bar and laying it on the driver's side frame rail with a rag around the handle. Remove the fuel pump and EGI fuse and bump the starter. This will break it free without the special crank tool.
    The leak on the front is from the fitting that replaced the stock oil pressure sensor. It may need to be teflon taped, which requires the alternator to be removed.
    The power steering pump often leaks from the o-rings and front seal.
    Subaru does have a rebuild kit for them as well as the bearing. I would replace the supply hose at the same time you address the pump.

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That method scares me. Tried it on my old 91 toyota pick up and the breaker bar went flying!

      Put it in 5th gear, ebrake on, wedge the tires, then loosen the crank bolt. You need 1/2" ratchet for that.

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FuJiNF it was way over tightened from previous owner but I got it 💪‼️

  • @PatrickLipsinic
    @PatrickLipsinic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Always use a 1/2" breaker bar with a impact socket. If it's a manual. Put it in 5th gear with the parking brake on. That should hold the crank from turning. If the parking brake is not enough. Have someone put their foot down on the brake pedal. Since you have it in the air on jack stands, have someone push on the brake pedal.

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Patrick Lipsinic 1/2 impact would not fit unless I moved the condenser which I should have done, clearly 🤦‍♂️ I did try 5th gear but had no one to hold the brakes. I will need to try all these tricks when I reinstall?

    • @PatrickLipsinic
      @PatrickLipsinic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RoadPatina I do the 5th gear trick all the time with the parking brake. 22mm impact 1/2" drive socket on a big 1/2" breaker bar uninstalling and installing. With autos I use a prybar on the flywheel through the hole in the block bellhousing, below the throttle body and to the passager side.

      @@RoadPatina Use the hand brake to stop the car from rolling. He meant the impact socket on the breaker bar not the gun. Impact sockets will bend regular sockets will snap if enough force is used. When installing put the car in reverse 5th is to remove the bolt. If it gets locked in gear turn the crank slightly the other way to free the gear or jack the car up and turn the wheels by hand . Another trick is use a long breaker bar and brace it on the frame and bump the starter, Only do this to remove it.

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wolfy1091 10-4 I had to buy the impact socket and have a long 1/2 breaker bar. Just need to hold it in place to reinstall. I will try to put it in reverse and hold the brakes!

  • @ziewknihtewza
    @ziewknihtewza 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Man, at this point, I’d just say to take out the whole engine and give it a complete refresh. Knock it all out at once. Also, what kind of impact were you using to break the crank bolt? Maybe invest in the Milwaukee 2767 impact. I have one and it was the best decision i ever made. Broke seized axle bolts, crank bolts, AND the dreaded Subaru rear lateral link nuts and bolts

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      ziewknihtewza I wish I could pull the engine. My garage has no room for it. Unless I chain it from the ceiling! Impact is a M18 Fuel 3/8. I think it was over torqued by a mile!!

    Earlier in the year I had the intention of doing my own Subaru timing belt change, bought all the oem parts, new bolts for the covers, water pump, the whole deal then I piked out and took it to my mechanic and by magic the next morning it was all done, zero stress. I know that’s not in the spirit of things but watching this kind of vindicates my decision.

      Sneaky Foz trust me, by day 4 I was done and ready to tow it to a shop. But, I don’t daily it and want to show people that even a hack like me could do it. My goal is to be honest and real. Not the usual TH-cam hype!

    • @samfisher395
      @samfisher395 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It shouldn't be that hard to take it out, I did my timing in about 5 hours no special tools. I used two allen keys and a C-clamp to hold the driver side cams in place. That's the difficult part if you don't get the special tools. Who ever had that engine before probably over torqued.

    Those tensioners are notorious for leaking. Replace the water pump if it is leaking or not a Subaru (Aisin) pump. But go on Rockauto and buy the Aisin timing belt and water pump kit it is all the OE components under $200. The oil pump just needs to be resealed and a new crank seal installed. I don't think they applied the Fujibond and torqued it correctly.

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      OEM parts are expensive but that’s what I purchased. Did not want to risk a cheeper part failing. The oil pump was scored pretty bad as you can see from part 2.
