- Joker (Ren Amamiya) is the main protagonist of Persona 5 and the leader of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. He is the first character of the DLC Fighter Pass in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
In this video, we're going to explore the origins of all moves, animations and costumes of Joker in Smash Ultimate.

I really like how they made joker’s physical attack in the person his tilts, jabs, and aerials. And while he does have moves that other characters have, he manage to blend them together to make them feel unique and makes them fit for joker. Joker’s is a stylish thief, his attack moves fit perfectly for him
I love how detailed they make on references from P5 for Joker in this game as well for others too! It shows how they really care about the franchises.

Correction on the final alt for Joker, it is actually based on the uniform Goro Akechi wears in Persona 5.

I don't really know about that fact. Some sources say it's his (Ren's) summer uniform & others say it's Akechi's uniform (either way, Akechi's uniform is light in color, both winter & summer)

Corrections
Grappling hook could come from Person 5 The Royal, an unreleased Persona game. In that game, Joker can use a grappling hook.
Rebel’s Guard is based off of the guard action in battle.
Wings of Rebellion’s name is a phrase used many times in Persona 5.
Example: when you begin a social link.
Run animation is taken from Persona 5
When you taunt with arsene awakened, arsene‘s pose is based off of arsene’s artwork
During joker’s victory animation when Morgana picks him up via bus, Joker is doing his solo victory animation from Persona 5

I really love how they mostly stay true to Persona 5. Those movesets are very appealing to the eyes and takes you back to it's gameplay and cutscenes
I said mostly because some movesets are not in his home game but still appealing to the eyes
I see that people mostly (yes including me) missed the fact that the grappling hook appears in the menu screen (I guess we're too focused on the gameplay huh?). It becomes more important in Royal since it's a new game mechanic
I personally think the snap Joker does while using Eiha is in reference to whenever he uses an item. Also the grappling hook I think may have been inspired by the Persona 5 Royal trailer? IDK if Sakurai was able to see it early or what.
The grappling hook is from the menu screen (tho we all mostly forget about it) and recently, Royal (as a new mechanic). His movesets are from the original game so menu screen is mostly the answer
Marian Jenickah If you look closely at the menu, it’s actually not a grappling hook but just a rope he’s swinging across, so the grappling hook really originated from Royal

He never used one. Actually the design of the hook itself in the Smash version matches perfectly with the Royal version so it is very likely that Sakurai knew about P5R before Joker was implemented into Smash.
Double reference possibly for the snap but it's no doubt eiha.... and the moveset of characters is usually a combined effort between the corporations since smash is just licensing the game, so its VERY likely that atlus had provided prior knowledge to masahiro before fully implementing his moveset

I love Smash characters that just have their own aesthetic. They change up the battle. Bonus points if two aesthetics clash in the same battle. (Joker and Bayonetta are both aesthetic. They’re different, but also similar. I want to see several videos of those two battling.)

Official name is Ren Amamiya according to the Dancing game and the anime. Akira is his name only on the manga which is probably not even cannon.

The grappling hook is actually from Royal. It has the same design as the one in Royal, and grappling hooks were a big theme in the game when the first trailers came out. I mean Joker even released very close to the reveal of Persona 5 Royal; it makes total sense. It’s not too crazy to think Sakurai got a bit of insider info when he was showing Joker to Atlus to see if he and his team were doing the character right. This happened with Link and Byleth too. The menu thing is just an effect.

No, the grappling hook was actually in P5 but Joker never used it out of the menus. Smash wiki confirms, "Joker does not use a grappling hook in Persona 5 outside of the game's menus, but he does use one when dungeon crawling in the game's updated rerelease Persona 5 Royal (a fact which was confirmed a few days after Joker was released, heavily suggesting that the idea for having the grappling hook in his moveset came from Royal)."

@@Kagetora- No, the grappling hook's design and function is exactly how it is in Persona 5 The Royal. In the menu screen he's not swinging on a grappling hook. And Persona 5 The Royal was revealed very close to Joker's release. It's very possible Sakurai had some inside information on the game beforehand. You can't always trust the wiki.

I think it's pretty clear that the grappling hook is from Royal, again, because its design matches its design in Royal perfectly. I actually think that the red Joker alt is meant to resemble of Arsene. It does break the theme the other alts had, but Joker's classic costume already resembles Persona 5 colors, and there is no Persona 2 costume alt either.

That's what I thought too, but Sakurai himself said in an interview that it's based off Persona 5's main red theme. I don't know why he skipped Persona 2, but it's his game to do what he wants with it.

No. The Grappling hook is a common weapon for Phantom Thieves in any media. Atlus simply didn't make it part of the infiltration gameplay until Royal.

6:18 Jokers outfit is based off Maya from Persona 2's outfit. She's the main character from Eternal Punishment and then the red joker outfit is based off of Innocent Sin's thematic color scheme.

I always figured the 8th alt costume was a reference to Akechi’s detective outfit since they shared the same colors. Could be the blazer though

One correction, the alt costume where joker wears a red coat is actually the color theme for persona 2
Both Persona 2 & Persona 5 has the same theme color, so it doesn't actually make a difference since both of them are red

It is not supposed that the rebel's guard is based on the guard command because in the original game it covers you from the weaknesses of the character
Guard command is for the shield (not the counter). The differences is from the blue flames (tho the stance is almost the same)
