In SSBU Super Smash Bros Ultimate, most people jump incorrectly, particularly out of shield, and especially with nair out of shield.
Imagine this on characters like Min Min, Cloud, Yoshi, Link... If you have a busted landing nair, or crazy nair hitbox, this becomes game changing easily.

Just btw, if it looks like I'm delaying her Nair a lot, I am not, I am doing it basically instantly, Pyra's Nair just comes out slow lol.
Just as an aside you can also get full momentum by pressing the direction within a certain time (I think 1 frame) after your jump to get full momentum as well. Important for getting the nair out earlier and getting full drift. Lots of applications where this matters for autocancels, rising aerials, sour/sweet spots and out of shield options.
@@menslingerie5502 thank you boss! I didnt know the specifics
@@DKbill it's especially relevant as it enables you to use buffered Nairs with full momentum but it's also good to know in case you want to undershoot so that you know to wait a couple frames to go less distance. Very relevant for moves like sephiroth bair.
If you hold 2 shield button at the same time, you can jump forward OSS easily wothout release your shield, if only use 1 shield button it accidentally roll forward
You are. It comes out slower when you showed yourself jumping right.
What good advice.
Can't wait to forget it immediately the moment I start playing another Smash Bros match
lmao nooo
Ditto
It'll come naturally. I learned that even when I try to form a move I slowly start to catch on to the inputs however, you must also train your hands to react on time. When you find yourself digging into combo you'll do it more and more just takes practice and a little muscle memory. Goodluck

Are you looking into my window rn😳
Can't be. Smash players don't own bathtubs
I'm not even fast enough to do a short hop
If you hold 2 shield button at the same time, you can jump forward easily without release shield first
that's really smart actually! thanks for sharing
@@DKbill I don't get what he means. Can you elaborate for me?
@@greendayblinkfan182 u wont accidentally roll out of shield if u hold 2 shield buttons :)
@@DKbillholding b also disables roll out of shield
It can be inconsistent tho. I find inputing side to move forward a bit then doing a directional input jump helps. Since you'll basically always have the momentum
nah, just practice, it's not frame perfect but what i do is drop shield then immediately hit forward and jump. I wont move forward since im in shield drop lag at first, but you can jump out of the shield drop lag in ultimate, so Im only like a frame or 2 longer than jumping OOS imemdiately; so worth it for the added distance when u need it
Okay so many people input jump and nair at the same time and then move because the buffering system always counts it as a short hop, aka, it's the easy way. Also, if it's done this way and instead you hold forward or backwards, you'll still get a short hop aerial but a fair or bair instead.
The inputs have to be pressed super quickly to do what's said here which many players find it very difficult including myself. You have to short hop in the direction first, almost immediately let go of analog stick direction, input the nair, and press in the direction of drifting again for maximum drift before landing. It takes a lot of practice to get this right consistently.
This is why I miss cstick nairs from smash 4; it made it way easier to do this
@@RandomDude647 c stick nairs still exist in ultimate. I do them by accident all the time when practicing
Gamer discovers that holding stick to left makes character move left faster than not
If this is all you took away from the video, then you missed the point
The point isn’t that holding a direction makes you move faster in the air, it’s that you instantly accelerate to your max air speed when you’re already holding in a direction before you jump
Like in every game 😂
I main ganondorf and you basically have to dash into jump then aerial input very fast or he’s slow as hell. Regardless I always flick the stick before a jump. I don’t know ANYONE who jumps without holding a direction 😂
tell me youve never played ultimate without telling me
The problem with this is if you’re the jiggler you can do this and Nasir them from cross stage
problem is this approach takes more frames than a fast out of shield
Yes this wouldn’t be for a speed thing
You can also use two jump inputs at once to short hop while holding a direction for people who can't let go of the input fast enough reliably.
Isnt that the auto short hop thing he's talking about?
@@acemontana3559noup, the auto short hop is when you press jump and attack at the same time.
@@cowardenemy9495 thank you for the explanation. Using Sephiroth I don't see a difference in the auto short hop's attack and a regular short hop attack fr. I'll look again now that I know what im looking for but it didnt seem like I couldnt reach a distance.
Really it’s situational, the sh nair out of shield is pretty much a get off me tool, or to catch them jumping. Really informative video tho! 🔥
Finally someone explained it!! All I hear from pros is that auto-short hop is bad but they never explain why
Crazy how this short video explained more than them lmao, thank you!!
Auto short hop has it's uses. There are some combos where it chains pretty well like Hero's dthrow -> sh fair. It's also a really easy button to hit for bringing out a defensive nair or other aerial option as fast as possible.
The main problems with it are that you can't hold a direction until you trigger the move, as demonstrated in this vid, and you relinquish control the timing of your aerial attack. Many more advanced combos require you to short hop manually so you can bring out the attack a little later to hit the proper spacing, something that is very important for all crazy Luigi combos.
It's also worth noting that being able to mix up the timing on your sh aerials, and better spacing for sh nair is very valuable in neutral as well so that makes relying on auto short hop considered a bad habit.
yes full momentum Arials are really good, but really inconsistent to input (bc there needs to be a gab between the jump and attack input and the arial comes out on frame 4 )
nooo, the key to consistency is inputting the direction during shield drop lag (which u want to cancel ASAP) or during ending of other moves which u want to aerial after (for example landing aerial to full momentum aerial which I do a lot as yoshi)
Thank you, Pyra main.
I think this is the one most fundamental technique that I was missing while short hopping. So for that, have my heartfelt thanks sir ✋♥️
This is CRUCIAL for characters with no fast out of shield option. Great video!

Wait there's a button to automatically short hop??

In smash 6 Nintendo should make jumps use Nair automatically
If you wanna main a character that heavily requires good air control (Ness) then you probably already knew this and the importance
ay lmao I already knew this
the way ultimate's short hop aerials work infuriates me so I got super good at full speed short hops about it
I've been probably doing this mistake this whole time. Thanks for pointing it out
When I was a marth main I would do something like this into down air for the sexy meteor effect and kill potential
Me, who plays K Rool: "over here, we just ball"
No wonder I have been unable to jump this whole time
I try to short hop, but I'm so inconsistent at it, without the auto short hop attack combo of X+A. I really wish that we could map short hop to the Y button and full hop to the X button.
If you press two jump buttons at the same time you'll always shorthop
Sorry for being late
This is gonna make my sora plays even better thanks
for ness its a little bit funnier. we have 2 types of short hops, normal short hop into air attack. then we have frame perfect double jump into down-direction psi magnet for extra mobility.
(yayyy)
Steves jab has a special animation for this
I can't short hop without the macro, shit's so hard
Just practice. You got this
You can auto short hop by pressing two jump buttons simultaneously
To me it helps to be running then leave the stick in neutral and then use the macro to cover space, it is better to use the actual short hop, but then again, it is kinda hard.
what psychopath hits y and a
that’s like holding left and right on a dpad simultaneously it just doesn’t work
I never really liked the shorthop aerial shortcut for this reason specifically.
Holy shit a smash video actually being helpful for the first time in history
Its not that we dont know. We know. The problem comes from being able time a nair and continuing our momentum without accidentally doing a forward or backwards arial
This tech is actually amplified with GimR’s new tech! If you double shield and hold forward, jump, and go to neutral and press A at the same time, you get a full speed nair out of shield.
This is very helpful. Thank you very much.

I've always heard people say not to use the auto short hop input, but i never knew why. This makes a lot of sense
there it is broski!
What is the auto short hop input? Im not sure if im using it or not
@@stealthchopper54 im talking about attack + jump to do short hop aerials
i feel like people should realize this when ppl say to do a "fast fall nair". you cant fast fall until ur at the top so its wild to think u nair and fast fall after and have your hit box not come down at all.
There is a tech that lets you get full momentum out of an oos nair by holding in a direction during the 3frames of jumpsquat. Yw
Yes but by doing this you lose some frames while relaising shield
This is better situationally. Depending on the frame data, you don't want to delay it unless you understand your opponent is trying to space properly but if you do this you are negative.
that's literally how it is in every fighting game
I thought this was gonna be like, fast press the jump button to short hop lol, but this was actually useful info
I dunno.. that sounds like extra frames before an attack. On laggy characters, that’s the last thing you’d want!
me a cloud main, "lmao as if i cant just hit you from halfway across the stage with my massive compensator while double jumping backwards"
Now teach me how to use forward to instant back air
I'm a joker main so, I know about the jump, hold left or right then jump, more effective since you perform his kick better
I didn’t even know you could jump directionally out of shield. I thought if you tried you’d just roll ._.
Do it during your shield drop Animation, which you can jump out of in Ult
I will 100% not manage to nair if I jump with directional input.
😂
I always jump with the direction input.
like tap jump? i dont recommend
I will stand by this till my grave. Smash bros is the hardest fighter i have ever played. People like to say that the true fighting games like tekken and street fighter are harder but they miss one thing. they have literal step by step guides on how to do combos and moves that you can read to learn and build up muscle memory.
If Smash bros had something like that then i'd be great at it but since all these strange moves and inputs are basically fan made that means its so much harder to actually learn the pro moves and combos. I get everyone has their own buttons for stuff but a simple (Special+->) goes a long way.
helps extend combos too ngl, unexplored with cloud specifically imo
Situational at best. Jumping straight out of sheild is quicker than dropping sheild, dash inputing then jumping. Out of shield options are huge in this game, and if your quick option doesn't work then consider yourself at a frame disadvantage
I was doin it right the whole time and never knew it.😊
The lessons people learn with tap jump and button jump
Stick jump supremacy
meanwhile, people who stick jump: {sweating}
It is wild to me that they make nairing so technical compared to fair and bair
This will help me greatly
That's typically the type of little detail that hold most players back and prevent them from improving. These kinds of indispensable tips should be centralized somewhere so everyone would know and where to go but nobody ever does this. Thanks for this video, it's great. But only people who will end up on it by chance will know.
Nice playing smash 4 helped me in a way I didn't think about lol. I don't think that game had instant short hops. But I'll be consciously doing this from now on
You could also just nair normally so you don’t lose momentum
No
I have always used tap jump, and this is making me decide to implement the jump buttons into my play style.
To me it seems like a commitment issue. A lot of players will just jump without knowing if they're going to move in a direction or not.
That waist some frames that can be vary valuable in some situations.
Thank you for this yo, actually helps out a lot!
I just wish I could get my Roy short hop nair muscle memory back. That 1st hit is so good for combo starters
I honestly had no idea about this. I just know I'm probably gonna fall right back into that habit when I start playing lol. It's gonna be a tough one to break
what i learned: always buffer nair oos. otherwise it comes out frame 90 after jumpsquat. as a ridley main i will be spamming the crap out of nair now
Me, a Hero main: "Hmm, I see..."
I can’t agree with this. The point of an out of shield move is to be able to punish as fast as possible out of shield.
Waiting to nair after a jump defeats that purpose and now puts you into a position where you’ve committed to a move and now can get blocked and punished.
No im not im doing this im just built diff i figure it out intuitively
