I totally agree, Keith. You know how you think you are hearing a lyric part, only to find out later (maybe years) that wasn't the actual lyric. That happened to me several times listening to Angelina sing this. And like you, I think this is one of her very best performances.

Funny story - years ago, when I hung out in a bar with go-go dancers and a pool table, the same music would be played from the juke box over and over again. Some of the music was great. I loved the beat. Great to dance around to. And the dancers made the music sound even greater. Fast forward about 10 years. I'm driving in my car, listening to the radio and all of a sudden a song came on which I remember always hearing in the bar (maybe 100-200 times!!!!). As I listened to the beat and the lyrics I realized for the FIRST TIME the song was sung in Spanish!!!!!!!!!!! lol Angelina's style of telling a song's story is fantastic and will always remain something we cherish very much. I wish AJ can do all of MJ's songs :) We know she can do it all, including belting with power etc, but it is this part of Angelina I like this most, the slow, breathy, textured, jazzy singing.
IMO, the simplicity and slower pace of the musical arrangement is a brilliant decision. The musical accompaniment, being just a piano, allows the listener to focus on Angelina’s incredible vocals. I think the pace of the color changes in the video composition perfectly complimented the musical performance. There was a conscious artful balance between them. As always, Angelina never fails to surprise and impress us with her renditions of the covers she sings. This cover demonstrates how Angelina’s creative brilliance is unmatched and unequaled. She has created her own genre and there is no one else in her lane.

Angelina can pretty much sing any genre, any style, and any song. But I think this version of "Billie Jean" that she has created is right in her wheelhouse. Her jazzy vocal fry/rasp on the lower register is PERFECTION!!! In my Top 3 of all her performances. Interestingly, two of my Top 3 Angelina performances are recent, which supports that at least for me, she continues to get better and better. I always look forward to your Angelina reactions, Valerie.

I heard Bruce Sweiden (Engineer on much of MJs music, including Thriller) tell the story about the girl who stalked Michael Jackson and confronted him claiming he was the father of one of of her twins. So, yeah, more than a little creepy, LOL. I'm really glad that Angelina sang it 'straight' and didn't try to change the lyrics to 'fit' her. It just works out much better that way.
Girls voice reaching full voice maturity mid to late twenties? Thats up to 15 years from now - just wow. If you compare AGTC at 13 to Million Miles at 14 her progress its even obvious for someone without much ear for music. This one in my opinion marks another milestone in vocal prowess. Not sure who had the idea to use that set (yes you can rent it as it is in that colors), could be her uncle who is credited on the video. But doesnt matter, the result speaks for itself.

Valerie, I was waiting for your reaction and as soon as I saw it posted, I smiled. People who know your background I'm sure felt the same way. Would you classify this as a sort of pop/jazz? Like she's purposely combining the two to attract a broader audience. I truly believe we will have to wait a while before we hear her go jazz all the way. Perhaps an album will be exclusively jazz for pure jazz lovers. Valerie, you pointed out in the past about how her voice will change and certainly we have heard that as she continues to mature. To me, what's so amazing is that she is so comfortable with the change and adapts to it at every turn. She doesn't get lost in the past and is aware of what is going on and, as far as I'm concerned, her voice remains so unique and beautiful and the one constant which never changes is the soulfulness that shines through. I don't believe that will ever change. That is Angelina's gift and she shares it with us.

I would NEVER dream of diminish Angelinas genius, or her hard work, while studying different music genres. But as Valerie also pointed out, this explains the dark voice from early kid-years on. She must have a vocal range, that most Adults can only dream of. She knows EXACTLY how to use it. By the way AJ has a beautiful neck and has become a beautiful woman with a beautiful soul. While going through your Angelina reactions for the umpteenth time { because you are so good } i remember that you mentioned that Angelina sounded like a Betty Smith, whome i had never heard of, but as i was watching/listening to your reaction of Angelina's I put a spell on you, i had Sky Atlantic on my adjacent TV and a movie came on called "Bessie" and yes, it was a about Bessie Smith played by Queen Latifah, and she really was a fabulous singer. I would never have watched it if you had not mentioned her name so thank you.
She and her uncle, Michael Astar, basically produced this video.

Valerie, I was waiting for your reaction and as soon as I saw it posted, I smiled. People who know your background I'm sure felt the same way. Would you classify this as a sort of pop/jazz? Like she's purposely combining the two to attract a broader audience. I truly believe we will have to wait a while before we hear her go jazz all the way. Perhaps an album will be exclusively jazz for pure jazz lovers.
Valerie, you pointed out in the past about how her voice will change and certainly we have heard that as she continues to mature. To me, what's so amazing is that she is so comfortable with the change and adapts to it at every turn. She doesn't get lost in the past and is aware of what is going on and, as far as I'm concerned, her voice remains so unique and beautiful and the one constant which never changes is the soulfulness that shines through. I don't believe that will ever change. That is Angelina's gift and she shares it with us.

Valerie, Question to the expert, a british vocal coach pointed out, in a video-still of AJ, that AJ may have a longer larynx than most women. In Bohemian Rhapsodie, when stretching her neck you can see a bit of it. At least it would explain why AJ can sing so deep even when young. Stay save and healthy. Gg
I agree with her assessment. Lower voices have a thicker and fuller larynx than higher voices. In any case, it's a truly special voice.

@@poolhallshark Sir, sorry to be misunderstood. The vocal coach and opera singer pointed out the length of her lanrynx, to be seen in one video-still. I would NEVER dream of diminish Angelinas genius, or her hard work, while studying different music genres. But as Valerie also pointed out, this explains the dark voice from early kid-years on. She must have a vocal range, that most Adults can only dream of. She knows EXACTLY how to use it. By the way AJ has a beautiful neck and has become a beautiful woman with a beautiful soul. Most sincerely and respectful greetings from an old German guy, who enjoyes good music.

It's as if, for you, Amy Winehouse created this style of singing. But she herself was inspired by singers from the 40s, 50s and 60s. She didn't invent anything. I think that Angelina Jordan is inspired by Amy but even more by the great singers of the past like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Etta James etc.
