What time I watch her she’s different, stronger and more powerful than in childhood ever seen in my life and aware of everything she is a magic. She’s a child prodigy no doubt about it. She’s put her on earth to sibs I think the minute she was born, she come out singing
1. An important thing to remember about AJ is that she owns the rights to everything she sings and with aquired permissions for covers of other singers. 2. She refused to sign for a record deal through AGT and they relented and invited her to sing anyway. 3. She began singing at 18 months and due to her grandmothers influence, she was drawn to and fell in love with jazz and blues music. 4. She has been arranging most, if not all of her music performances since she was 8 years old. 5. Currently in 2022 she still performs barefoot, sews her own clothes, (the cloth is designed by her grandmother) and she stands 6 feet tall at 15 yeats old! 6. We all hope to enjoy her performances for many years to come. 7. BTW I'm 80 and have been involved privately in music since age 7.
"Painting a portrait in oil" is an extended metaphor used as the heart of the song. He uses "all the colors of blue" on his stand. Blue= sad, the blues, pain, sorrow, burdens, etc. At the end of the song he turns the image around with, "I am the man." So, it is a self-portrait. Meditate on that for deeper meaning. That's what I love about the best songs, especially the old ones: They contain poetry. Angelina herself writes....as does her artist grandmother, the one who played all the old jazz/blues vinyls for her from infancy on. I just listened several times to the SJH original of this song. That double ending is done that way in the original. I have always felt the pain of others, and it is so marvelous to witness this capacity in Angelina, and how she conveys that heart/spirit in the songs.... yes, an old soul.
Angelina continues to evolve artistically, using these crazy skills she developed almost as a toddler. Musical genius is exactly right, I believe. I enjoy your reactions to Angelina, as a jazz musician who can explain to us how jazz works and can appreciate how sophisticated AJ is as a jazz musician. Thanks, Valerie, for your generosity and creativity!
I keep on repeating this reaction video of Angelina I’m really amazed of whats she’s doing . She’s so great in her chosen craft. At this young age I can’t imagine she can do all of this perfection in singing. I love you my barefoot angel..
Awesome review. I've heard literally 300 reviews and this one was the best. I liked hearing about the notes and tones more that the obvious shock of how great she is. I know that. I want to dissect the voice and gift. What is happening here. Its so amazing. I can't carry a note to save my life but I appreciate the healing she sends to my brain. What is THAT about?
It is such a delight to watch this. Often when I see (very) young singers I ask myself if they are pressed by the parents to do something or not. This video is clear: for Angelina singing real music with real musicians is her 'playground' and she is enjoying every second of it. And it is so good to see that the older musicians are taking her so seriously and having a very good time as well: nothing can be a better motivation for her. If I am correct: I think these are the same musician as in the almost iconic cover 'I put a spell on you' in black and white she did when she was 9. I guess she is about the same age here.
WOW!!!she's totally brilliant.....portrait of a man.... she change to portrait of a child.... and singing jazz and blues at her young age.....yes she is a musical genius....great reaction ma'am. thanks.✌
She is so completely confident of her place in this group. They've clearly accepted her uncritically for a long time. She's done the dues, put in the time. Almost equally amazing is the hours and days her mother Sara must have sat on that chair in the corner (figuratively) giving Angelina the opportunities.
To start your day, i would like you to hear a fellow Angelina fan say in admiration "all babies are born coming into this world crying but Angelina was the exception, she came in singing Jazz" I hope this puts a smile on your face as it did mine. 😄😘
I've noticed, in the rehearsals I've seen, that Angelina doesn't appear to try to perform how she will for the live performance. Rather she tries different things and sometimes jokes around, but when you see the lived performance she always rises to the occasion.
i say it over and over again,,,,she redefine music and us ( i am 60) how and why we listen to music,,,,,,,she is not just telling a story she is teaching most of us or remind us of so many things ,,,,,,,,,,thanx for reacting
Another reactor didn't know this song "a portrait of a child". After hearing some lines he said she's a genius, this is "A portrait of a man" by Screaming Jay Hawkins. Angelina just adapted it to her own age.
You are the only reactor who has mentioned the phenomenon of the prodigy being overtaken by the talented only to become good. I agree with you, Angelina will continue to progress and get better and better to stay ahead of the herd. Thank you for the intelligent analysis.
Angelina thoroughly understood jazz at a super young age. Jazz seems to be her native musical language. We have her grandmother to thank for that. I hope that she brings more people, especially young people to an appreciation of that great genre. It's great to see the band playing off each other, responding musically to each other, and appreciating the experience.
I love Angelina to the moon and back, there is no one like her I have ever heard in my life time . We can not say enough about how amazing she is!! Love your insightful reactions for her, it is a treat to watch you react to this wonder of the musical world. There is another amazing young talent on the scene a 12 year old, I love to see your critique of, with a very different expertise and is self taught and in a matter of two years has become an absolute master of her unique craft and stands toe to toe with two of the present time greats . like Jeff Dunham and Terry Fator and has performed along side them both. Her name is Darci Lynne her last surprise performance on a major talent show was a rendition of the Italian opera "Mio Babbino Caro", singing through her adorable bunny puppet "Petunia" ,all the while never moving her lips and smiling all the way through this opera and operating her puppet to perfection and sung the opera high notes and all with no mouth movement what so ever. link to it here ( th-cam.com/video/nYH0ymEZVDE/w-d-xo.html ) . Also there is one of her yodeling through her puppet link here, ( th-cam.com/video/_f5bXJfIQJI/w-d-xo.html ) , Thanks for you for your great reactions!!
I understand these are the same musicians she used on her “I Put A Spell On You” video. This rehearsal was when she was nine because either they released the video of I Put A Spell On You before or after this recording. I think this rehearsal came first. I think they were thinking of doing this song and put it out; But someone (my guess would be Angelina) decided to make the I Put A Spell On You video instead, and the rest is as they say, is history. OK, everything here is speculation on my part. LOL, what can I say, I have a wild imagination.
Hello Valerie, i always like your reactions on Angelina, thanks for all of them👍 This time you asked if i love Angelina as much as you do. I don't think so. I'm pretty sure i like her more than you do. I can't Imagine that there is anybody who loves her more than i do😜😜
I love to watch these jam sessions. You see her LOOK at the different musicians and she seems to speak to them with her eyes, you see her do it all the time as she does a cover . Musicly her brain came from another world for any age. And the musicians seem to know and respect her. If you are a fan of her low register. Listen to her sing HOW GREAT THOU ART ..really enjoyed your reaction again
What a great explanation of prodigy burn out. As others catch up, the adulation one received as a child diminishes. Adulation is addictive, and when it is gone or recedes, that can be a big let down. But as you said, Angelina has continued to grow and improve. She is committed to being the best possible version of herself at any time in her life. And she remains focused, determined, and dedicated to her goals and dreams. I also think the pandemic, which of course is a horrible thing, has been a very good thing for her growth as an artist and a person. It slowed things down and gave her an opportunity to write and to have personal reflective time. And Republic seems to be allowing her to progress at her pace. The things she has created with Rob Christie ("7th Heaven" and "All I Ask"), the studio manger at Republic's L. A. Studio and a Grammy winning producer, I believe are the best in her career. So while she was a phenom as a young child, she has always continued to improve. I see no signs of that changing. Great analysis Valerie! 💕💕
Portrait of a legendary child. This was really a nice tribute to the original "Portrait of a man". You mentioned an interesting topic at the end, namely that many child "stars" (actors and singers) pay a heavy price after a short-lived career. They had that one sensational performance on TV, get pushed to the limits and then eventually crash hard and will be forgotten. In Angelina's case, however, I think she's on a good way to turn the corner. Her popularity is not decreasing as she gets older, on the contrary it's constantly increasing regardless of her change of voice and looks. Which is a good sign. Let's just pray to God that her popularity will continue to grow in a healthy way.
Wow 🤩 love your reaction, made me understand jazz more deeply…. Thank you 🙏, Love 💕 AJ been on this journey for nearly 2 years … I’m addicted ….. & your absolutely right QJ more or less said the same thing, MJ prodigy….
Thank you very much for a great reaction. I agree with everything you said. I think most definitely that Angelina is on a steady path to where very few have ever been. I'm SO looking forward to the things to come. :-) Greetings from Norway.
I've seen so many reactions to AJ now, that I have started to get picky on which reactors I watch. Just wanted to say that I never skip one of yours, they are always so insightful and great. Thanks a lot, Valerie!
Valerie thank you so much for a wonderful reaction and analysis to our barefoot princess, Angelina Jordan. The more I learn, the more I believe I don't know yet about this once in forever musical artist.
You are always giving us the best analysis whether good or bad is just to get positive vibes. You are great music teacher who is learning from you Will be great too. see you soon.
Angelina was born to sing, she is the music. This is obviously in her Jay Hawkins period, she used this studio several times, so having tried "Portrait of a man" she did "I put a spell on you". I think that she made the right choice with that one, same musicians, clearly they established a very good working relationship! Her understanding of music and voice is so deep at this young age, as you say, as she gets older it becomes more challenging to establish a presence amongst the more mature artists, as she continually works on developing her own styles I trust that more and more people will become aware of her and appreciate her talent. Of course her real strength is with live performances, when she is able to put on her summer concerts she will really take off!
Great video. It really show the uniqueness of Angelina and that she has a total understanding of what she is doing as a part in the interaction between the musicians .... and that at such a young age. Nothing else to say than Angelina is the music.
AJ hears and incorporates every musical line from every instrument. She's really two people: one singing and one totally aware of everything around her, including the camera. It's called brilliance. Her expectations of herself, and everyone performing with her, is at the very highest level. That is why she is NOT like other prodigies and just gets better and better. NOTE: Just listened to the end of your comments. I've said before, and agree with you completely, that Michael Jackson is one of the very few prodigies who maintained his level of performance from childhood through his teenage years through adulthood. I think AJ has absolutely done that as well.
Thank you Valerie! You should react to I'll be there, she sung sick for a benefic concert in Sweden...the passion and compromise is out of this world!!
Love this one! She’s so amazing in the way she understands and gets jazz. That is a tough number but not for her and she is like 8-9 years old! Great reaction with your explanations and thoughts. Thank you
I was overwhelmed by this performance - (and I tend to say that with each of Angelina's songs) the vibe of this jam session, the amazing piano sound, and the out of this world tone of Angelina's voice, her rhythm, everything, makes this one of the coolest things to listen to. It only makes me sad that I cannot just chose to go to a concert and see this live. A huge jazz festival, e.g. in Montreux, with Angelina would be a life-changing experience for most !
👩🏻🎤🎵🌎⭐️🇳🇴❤️ I love these behind-the-scenes videos of Angelina that allow us to see her creative process and her interaction with other musicians. Thanks for reacting to this Valerie!
She’s never been intimidated by big bands, orchestras or crowds. She said one time that she never gets nervous while performing. Apparently she never gets nervous when working with adult musicians either! You saw her mom sitting there, and her grandmother is usually the one videoing the sessions. She’s about 9 here-doesn’t she look tiny? I wish they would have produced the audio of this song. She changed it from Portrait of a Man to Portrait of a Child. She’ll tackle anything! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us.
There is a video of her singing Fly Me to the Moon on a talk show when she was 7 .. about the time she got into NGT .. and she looked a bit nervous then .. just a bit :)
An interesting thing is that the original song is Portrait of a man and to make it her own she changed it to the portrait of a child. I think you would enjoy hearing an interview with Ivan Mendez (a guitarist who appears in many covers) to hear how those videos are recorded.
Yes after 2 years of turning down Simon's invitations to be on AGT-Champions because of the standard controlling AGT contract, she & her team only accepted the invitation after Simon offered her a special contract that relinquished any control over her.
There should be a description other than prodigy to a apply to her. She is beyond what most people think of as a musical prodigy. She is more complex than a computer with regard to processing being done in her brain.
Indeed this is insane skilled! Just the fact that she can start a line (sentence) somewhere in the middle of a measure and times the 'weight' perfect around the new 'one' of the next measure. Either laid back or a little ahead, so tasteful! And with the natural understanding of the negative space, as you mentioned earlier!~And there is so much more (dynamics etc) Thanks for your reaction!!!
That's why every band she works with they call her 'The Boss'. You're correct in saying she is very equitable in her finding the heart of the band and the song, but when she makes a decision about how the song is going to go that's it. I don't know if you went to Sunday school but this setting reminds me of the time when Jesus when he was around 12-13 was lost and his parents couldn't find him. Finally they found him standing in the middle of the religious leaders answering questions about the scripture. That's what this scene reminds me of. The verse, "and a child shall lead them", also comes to mind. Whatever this video conjures up for you is great. I just saw this small child who knew what she was talking about, directing how things were to proceed. The Boss indeed. Oh, that trumpet player isn't much older than Angelina is he? I also noticed she is figuring out when to come into the music and when not to. That can be problematic for adults let alone an 8 or 9 year old. Thanks for your reaction.
I agree with everything you said. Watching her perform almost all of her covers and her originals, it's obvious that she is not looking for the adulation as a "goal". She appreciates it but it's a step towards the next level of the very complicated path to open-ended achievement. She will just keep evolving into a wonder that we will marvel at. I hope the album is released soon.
In the beginning here, Angelina says to the band "This is too law isnt it" and they listened to her and started all over again. It is right what you say, she has full control over the band. We Norwegians love her soo much.
A heads up. You don't walk in a Jazz jam session and play. They have secrets! So it's been said, and they don't share. Another world, and she owns it. That in it self....WOW.
NOOOOOOO NOOOOOOO GUAUUUUUU GUAUUUUUU YO NO ENTIENDO NADA PERO UNA NIÑA QUE CANTA ASÍ ES UN FENÓMENO NO CONOZCO....NOS VOLÓ LA CABEZA EL CEREBRO JAJAAAA ES EXTRAORDINARIA ANGELINA ÚNICA 😇👣💯💯💥✌✌✌👍👍👍👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤❤❤❤❤GRACIAAAAAAS A TI POR TAN IMPECABLE REACCIÓN Y POR ESTE RECUERDO INCREÍBLE CHAUUUU 👍👍👍✌✌✌👸❤❤❤🙋♀️🙋♂️🙋♀️🙋♂️🙋♀️🙋♀️DESDE ARGENTINA GRACIAS
I've said in other comments before, that Angelina is best when she is interacting with a live band instead of a recorded track. She plays off of the instruments and the ebb and flow of the music like a conversation. She simply becomes another contributing instrument in the creation of the final artistic expression. In this regard, she is more professional and seasoned and has more musical intelligence than many of the popular "pop" stars out there. Great reaction and analysis. If you've never heard it before, Screamin Jay Hawkin's original performance of "Portrait of a Man", the source for this cover, is a fantastic listen. - th-cam.com/video/hjYWQ3FZYd4/w-d-xo.html
Valery, as I understand it the song is "Portrait of a man" by Screaming Jay Hawkins, and she rewrote it, so its more proper for her age. And as we can see, the musicians and friends (they are with her since "I put a spell on you" also of Screaming Jay H.) enjoy it all the same. Stay save and healthy. German greetings.
Really enjoyed that reaction Valerie and all the information you gave us. Have not seen this one in a very long time, so thankyou for sharing with us. This child's musical IQ is through the roof and continues to amaze us all. She is a little child here...a child.
Hi Valerie. Thanks for your great reaction. So glad you stumbled upon this one. I believe she's 9 here. This is the same band from 'I Put a Spell on You' video when she was 9. Such a great band; they compliment each other so well. Wouldn't it be amazing to see a video of them performing this full song together? Angelina is a special gift to all of us.
Angelina behind a mike and in a studio with musicians. Puts me in mind of a dolphin cavorting in the ocean. Effortless and in her element. Angelina does seem to have an friendly and respectful rapport with the young bloke on piano. I've noticed he and Angie interacting a fair bit in other rehearsal clips. BTW Valerie, if you haven't already, maybe have a listen to "Stay". Just Angie and Ivan with his guitar. It is sublime and I think you will enjoy it. th-cam.com/video/_GSVPvCy3Yg/w-d-xo.html
Also note, she is singing 'portrait of a child' to a Screamin' Jay Hawkins song originally titled "Portrait of a Man". These are the same musicians she worked with on Hawkins' "... Spell on You" so age 9 would be about right.
Hi 103. We find some them on stage at early jazz festivals, too. I think interchangeable members are fairly common with jazz groups...any part-time performing band for that matter.
Great reaction Valerie.. the original song was "Portrait of a Men" by 'Screaming' Jay Hawkins .. it's her own interpretation of the song .. obviousily she's a child - at age 9 - who is able to make this well placed changes .. incredible .. and her interaction with the musicians like you said is way beyond her age .. and like other mentioned before she's "the Boss" like the band call her .. her changes are her wishes .. you can also see this in "I put a spell on you" where she wrote her 'wishes' to the Producer ..
What time I watch her she’s different, stronger and more powerful than in childhood ever seen in my life and aware of everything she is a magic. She’s a child prodigy no doubt about it. She’s put her on earth to sibs I think the minute she was born, she come out singing
A child prodigy love your reaction thanks valerie

You should have reacted to one with subtitles. She stopped towards the beginning and suggested they go up one tone. She is the boss!
I like the name on the wall. "The Practice Hotel"
I've never seen this footage before, and nice to see it with my new favorite AJ reactor.

They call Angelina the boss!
Stunning. Angelina is a musical genius. Can't get enough. Thanks for the great reaction.
Love Your reaction Valerie. Ann, Norway
that´s why the musicians call her "the boss" -lol-
Hi there Music Lover. I think Bruce Springsteen wants to have a chat with AJ's musicians 😃

So tiny in stature but big in every other way, great insights from you as always and great reaction I look forward to more.
Thanks for reacting to and enjoying this, one of my all time AJ favorites, absolutely fascinating!
thank you for this reaction, totally agree with you

I am in the same boat. Valerie stands out amongst the best knowledgeable and sincere reactors.
Same here bro
ditto
Valerie thank you so much for a wonderful reaction and analysis to our barefoot princess, Angelina Jordan. The more I learn, the more I believe I don't know yet about this once in forever musical artist.
Great reaction. Very insightful.
You are always giving us the best analysis whether good or bad is just to get positive vibes. You are great music teacher who is learning from you Will be great too. see you soon.
I bet NONE of those musicians EVER thought they'd be bossed around by a 9 year old girl in pink shoes...and like it. 😎👍
Of course her real strength is with live performances, when she is able to put on her summer concerts she will really take off!
les Piano, sax, trumpet players appeared on I Put a Spell; double bassist and drummer are different.
@@103mrg quite right.
Amazingly AMAZING!! ( PinkLemon)
Great video. It really show the uniqueness of Angelina and that she has a total understanding of what she is doing as a part in the interaction between the musicians .... and that at such a young age. Nothing else to say than Angelina is the music.
Thanks from Italy🇮🇹 🙏🏻☺
AJ hears and incorporates every musical line from every instrument. She's really two people: one singing and one totally aware of everything around her, including the camera. It's called brilliance. Her expectations of herself, and everyone performing with her, is at the very highest level. That is why she is NOT like other prodigies and just gets better and better. NOTE: Just listened to the end of your comments. I've said before, and agree with you completely, that Michael Jackson is one of the very few prodigies who maintained his level of performance from childhood through his teenage years through adulthood. I think AJ has absolutely done that as well.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It will happen and I will be there too.
👩🏻🎤🎵🌎⭐️🇳🇴❤️ I love these behind-the-scenes videos of Angelina that allow us to see her creative process and her interaction with other musicians. Thanks for reacting to this Valerie!
You are so welcome!
Hello Diane
There is a video of her singing Fly Me to the Moon on a talk show when she was 7 .. about the time she got into NGT .. and she looked a bit nervous then .. just a bit :)
Another great job Val!!
An interesting thing is that the original song is Portrait of a man and to make it her own she changed it to the portrait of a child. I think you would enjoy hearing an interview with Ivan Mendez (a guitarist who appears in many covers) to hear how those videos are recorded.
Valerie, I always look forward to your insightful reactions to Angelina & you never disappoint. Thanks!
She is unique that is for sure! Check out Love on the brain, it's amazing! God Bless!
I think her not winning AGT was by design it introduced her to the rest of the world but left her in control ...she is so great
If making her the winner means she has to sign up with a producer or a recording company, never mind...
@@gideonomero4081 I've heard she didn't sign the deal so she would not be able to win anyway.
Yes after 2 years of turning down Simon's invitations to be on AGT-Champions because of the standard controlling AGT contract, she & her team only accepted the invitation after Simon offered her a special contract that relinquished any control over her.
@@keithserafy Thank God Simon is so controlling... never ever to be in charge of Angelina's career.
There should be a description other than prodigy to a
apply to her. She is beyond what most people think of
as a musical prodigy. She is more complex than a
computer with regard to processing being done in her
brain.
Indeed this is insane skilled! Just the fact that she can start a line (sentence) somewhere in the middle of a measure and times the 'weight' perfect around the new 'one' of the next measure. Either laid back or a little ahead, so tasteful! And with the natural understanding of the negative space, as you mentioned earlier!~And there is so much more (dynamics etc)
Thanks for your reaction!!!
Amazing
- and she has worked with a lot of really good Norwegian jazz-musicians. I think she has learned a lot doing this
...and they have learned a lot from Angelina😂🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
So do l,and many others Puertorricans Jazz lovers.
I'm sure you're all very proud of her too. She's magnificent I love her
And, as is the culture of your country, your generosity allows others to bask in the "Angelina Experience!" Thank you.
Portrait of a Child... what a beautiful tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins...
So love your reactions Valerie. Thank you, so appreciate your talent too. Have a beautiful weekend 🌻🌞💛
Hi Valerie. Thanks for your great reaction. So glad you stumbled upon this one. I believe she's 9 here. This is the same band from 'I Put a Spell on You' video when she was 9. Such a great band; they compliment each other so well. Wouldn't it be amazing to see a video of them performing this full song together? Angelina is a special gift to all of us.
narffan Sax, trumpet, piano are the same; double bass and drums not.
She was 10 when she recorded IPaSoY.
Spell on You" so age 9 would be about right.
tom Sax, trumpet, piano are the same; double bass and drums not.
