    When DICKEY BETTS plays guitars and sings HE swings - - - - HE can swing a rock tune - - - - country up a blues - - - - make HIS slide sound like a tenor saxophone - - create a moving jazzy groove that goes on and on as it rides along - - - - DICKEY BETTS will always be with us - - - - DICKEY BETTS is with us Dead or Alive - !

    Hey yall- still mourning DB sadly on my 70th bday today 4/21/24..... so going back to 1978 i was at the very first ever Legend Valley/Buckeye Lake show, which was an event called Dixie Jam I, outdoors on 7/30/1978 - Dickey & Great Southern were the headliner- on the bill also the (absolutely outstanding) Outlaws, the CDB, and the Earl Scruggs Review....
    ps when i was 17yo on 7/31/1971 also outdoors (North Baltimore, Ohio) in a venue for some reason named "The Park" which was carved out of a cornfield in the middle of nowhere by some awesome "Free John Sinclair" radical Michigan hippies who brought the Allmans to this unknown venue just a couple weeks after the release of Fillmore East....
    and im not done! -
    later in Fall of 1971 on the campus of Univ. of Cincinnati i was at a show which the Allmans headlined and Mahavishnu opened but right after Mahavishnu finished (btw LOUDEST show ever!) it was announced that Allmans couldnt make it but Spirit had arrived to take their place and this was when they were touring to promote the 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus so what an amazing turn of events....
    and i say all that to say this - that seven years later in 1978 and in Germany here is Dickey Betts from the Allmans and Randy California from Spirit together JAMMING the blues at the end of this Rockpalast show .... you cant make this shit up!

    A true musical genious. Even drunk; he played with much more than technique. A master of all genres. And the songs he wrote? The instrumentals alone ensured his place in musical history. Best show I ever witnessed (out of at least 50) was in NYC right after Duane died. He was magnificent. Played over 2 hours a night 4 nights in a row and made it look easy. His playing lives forever.❤🎸

    And though the tears flow from our eyes...
    The veils are thin two beers in...
    The music never dies...

    After too many years, I picked up an electric guitar in 2022 and Dickey was my inspiration. Doesn't matter if it is Allman Brothers or Great Southern, I love his touch and tone. Love to hear Dangerous Dan Toler, too!

    I saw Dickie in Philly in 77. He was one of the openers for Skynyrd and Frampton. He played a beautiful version of Blue Sky at about 12 noon and shortly thereafter got peeved at the sound and walked off! Dickie. He was hit and miss, but when you caught him at his best he was magnificent

    3 months since Dickey passed, I know he wasn’t active on the music scene for a bit before he died, but for me there is a huge hole that will never be filled because he’s gone. I was always a fan of the man in the hat playing the screaming guitar. A few weeks before Dickey passed, I got a chance to see Duane and his band open for BlackBerry Smoke in New Jersey. Duane’s band was a very pleasant surprise! RIP Dickey, your music will live on.

I graduated OSU 12/76 and was out of the country during 1977 but back to Columbus in 1978... saw the GD at Vets Memorial 4/19/78 when they played the first ever cover of Werewolves as the encore.... i am from Columbus grew up in Bexley/Eastmoor on the east side...

    Been watching him for 50 years up down the good and the bad ,I loved Highway Call it really showed his Western swing just brilliant and his great song writing, then he comes up with this Miles and bebop long soloing and beautiful melodies but catch him on an off night and he falls apart,Gregg mentioned in his book one thing like the sound being off would make him madd as hell and destroyed his playing, Gregg said he's not a bad guy just a mixed up guy ! But he did step up and take the band in a positive direction after Duane and Berry died when Gregg and Butch were too far gone,Ramblin Man and Jessica put them in super stardom and made them all very rich but in the mid 70`s they crashed and burned and they rose again they were at it a long time simply the best !

      Tell ya a story. I entered college in Atlanta in 76.about a month in saw a notice for Dickie and Great Southern. Their first gig. Roses Cantina. Little place with a big bar stacks of PBR and pool tables.
      He was drinking at the bar while a jazz fusion group called Dixie Dregs were the warmup. He came on and played til 400 in the morning. Toy Caldwell showed up. All for 2.50 to get in. And walkin home lol

    • @sercastamere9853
      @sercastamere9853 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agreed, Dickey was always overshadowed in the public's eye by the death of Duane and his legacy I think the same is true for Hendrix still largely being considered the "greatest" guitarist mostly because he died early; Santana outclassed him at his own game even at the same time.

    • @jblancomuro37
      @jblancomuro37 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Santana took advantage of this circumstance, in fact Jimi taught him many tricks, which was said before since there was practically no theory since it was the weapon of guitarists who, if they have knowledge of music theory, were envious of their genius, just like Prince. Van Halen etc....and I've had this problem myself thanks for watching@@sercastamere9853

    Best musical night in my life when Dicky said “We’ll back in a few with some special guests” that was the reunion concert in Central Park, NYC. At the end of the show no one would leave and the promoter had to come on stage and basically beg everyone to leave.
