  • How to remove and replace a gearbox on a Seventh generation Suzuki Alto or Nissan Pixo.
    This particular car is a 2014 car with 27,000 miles. It is the seventh generation HA25 and practically identical to the badge engineered Nissan Pixo. Fitted with the 998cc KA10B 3 cylinder petrol engine and the 5 speed manual gearbox.
    In some markets this car might also be called the Mazda Carol or Suzuki Celerio. The gearbox might be called the YC5 or AMF310.
    The bearing kit for this box on ebay:

    If you can find a reputable gearbox specialist near where you live and have the bearings changed or have the gearbox overhauled but it will cost more. The bearings that went into this gearbox were KOYO bearings. Debate could rage as to whether i should have changed the other bearings and synchros within this box but they all looked and sounded fine.
    My attempt at showing the gearbox input shafts being changed, ie a slower version of what appears in this video:

    Great video, very detailed.
    The gearbox looks to be the same Aisin 5 speed box that is also in the Splash, possibly the Swift and also the Vauxhall Agila B. The same caged bearing went on our Splash and I removed the box, split it and found the bearing cage had disintegrated. Cost £25 for an identical bearing and the main cause is low gearbox oil levels (from a leak) as this bearing is in the casing recess and prone to lesser oil coverage, or failure to renew the GL4 transmission oil every 3 years which is a must for these Aisin gearboxes.

    Hi, I’ve found a workaround for not having to remove the manifold, if you go underneath the manifold and look between the gearbox and the pendulum mount (driveshaft must be removed to see this far up) you’ll see a lower bolt for the pendulum and another bolt above it, the higher bolt is the starter bolt. Remove the pendulum bolt and push a shallow 14 onto the starter bolt. To the right if you follow the level of the bolt to the right there should be a bracket with a bit of loom attached and an earth. Remove the bracket and the earth (10’s if I remember rightly) and push the bracket up. Attached a 3” 3/8 extension onto the shallow socket on the starter bolt and then a 3/8 to 1/2” adapter. The adapter gives just the extra little bit of length to get a ratchet on and not end up to close to the alternator. You won’t get much of a swing as the ratchet will hit off the subframe and the engine but it’s enough to break the bolt loose and then remove the ratchet and use the extension to undo the bolt :)! Hope this helps anyone that’s under a time restraint with the car or isn’t confident in removing the manifold!

      I had heard it was a problem with suzukis, although last month i had a splash 1.0 which had no issues at all. Rather inconveniently the splash gearbox is a different code to the alto and there was not much support from the owners clubs in finding out if a splash box would have worked.
      Definaltey got reminded of the fact suzuki gearboxes can be a bit weak with this one. Although if its just a case of fitting better quality bearings it might not be too bad.

    Holy moly been driving my 09 Pixo like I stole it for 11 years. It is starting to make a noise like rusty rubbing brakes (not that) when rolling with clutch lifted. Hoping its just wheel bearings and not this! Gear oil needs changing every 10 years your video was useful for that. Thanks.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fingers crossed, let me know if you get the brakes checked.
      The gearbox noise on this car happened if it was in gear or even neutral with the clutch pedal lifted (foot off it). It sounded like bits of metal in a washing machine quite distinct from bad brakes.

      Gear oil changes I have found on these boxes should be done every 3 years or 45,000 km if covering an average 15,000 kilometers (around 10,000 miles) per year - hence the 45,000 kilometer (30,000 mile) change interval in the Suzuki owners manual. The oil by then is already brown and at its end of service life. 10 years is way too long unless the car is only used occasionally.

    • @sang3Eta
      @sang3Eta 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was just rusty brakes I think still rolling same oil since 5k LOL. Got a new problem now though airbag light wont go off. I hear its a common problem on these needs a new wiring loom in the steering column.

    Great video
    I have two Suzuki Alto's, one from 2009 (180000km) and one from 2010 (115000km).
    Luckily no problems with the gearboxes. I did change the oil on both of them but didn't find any metal in the oil. Just a little bit on the magnetic drainplugs.
    The Suzuki manual recommends changing it every 45000km. The preffered oil viscosity according to Suzuki is 75W90.
    I did not know that there where any problems with these gearboxes.
    Again great video.
    Greetings from Holland

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hopefully they continue to go for many more years with no issues.
      The wee bit of filings on the magnetic drain plug is entirely normal in a manual gearbox.
      This particular car, it showed a record of the oil in the gearbox having been changed at 18,000 miles but something must have been wrong to it go bad so soon. Unfortunaltley it seems to be common judging by just how hard it is to get replacement boxes, a lot of the breakers said it was the first thing they sold.

    Hi! I have a Nissan Pixo which okie to drive. But the gear shift is not soft at all. When i try to put it in reverse gear, it won't lock most of the time. So i have to put first gear and then reverse to lock it. Sometimes moving the car helps to lock the reverse gear. Is this the problem with the gear box or it's the design of the best box itself? I don't know when the gear oil was changed but will changing it fix my problems?

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi i am not sure what you mean by the gear shift not being soft? Do you mean there is excessive resistance to getting it into a gear?
      I am no gearbox expert, this was just me attempting to get this particular box working again as cheaply as possible. It was very obvious that some internal bearing had failed by the sound it made and then opening it up i clearly saw what bearings had failed and had them changed. For a selector issue you could be looking at the linkages or selector forks inside the gearbox.
      Firstly look at the gearbox cables that go from the gearstick to the gearbox see if there is any obvious corrosion or resistance in them, or on the selector mechanism on the exterior of the box. It might be a case of something simple there. Failing that the gearbox will need to come out and go to someone who works on gearboxes.

    Snap! I bought a 2012 Pixo (80,000 miles) at the car market for my granddaughter. It was in decent - not brilliant - condition and was very cheap. I also had that sinking feeling when I drove it home. Grinding, mainly in low gears - also very clutch is not brilliant. There were other, easily repairable, issues which I expected. I do not have hydraulic ramps but do have a pit and an engine support bar - not as good but should be achievable. Also little experience of gearboxes - changed them but have not stripped them. It would be brilliant if you could upload your gearbox overhaul at normal speed. There are some Asian videos on TH-cam but I do not speak the language and most are for earlier models. P.S. Loved the test run in NI countryside - reminds me of my youth (many years ago) around the Limavady area. I notice that the ebay kit had jumped to £99.74 - still o.k. though

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clutch could be gone at 80k, these are popular with 1st time drivers and for use in urban environments which will get a lot more wear than a car that mainly does motorway miles.
      I think this job should be doable on the ground with axle stands, definitely read my fair share of forum threads with people doing clutches on their driveway including on a 406 V6. At the very least you have the inspection pit which helps somewhat.
      I will try to tidy up the gearbox disassembly segment its very much a lot of waffle talk.
      Ah Limavady a nice part of the country im based down in County Armagh.
      The ebay kit is not what i fitted to this car, i went to a gearbox rebuilder who had his own trade only supplier and fitted KOYO japanese bearings which should be good items.

      Unfortunately i have since sold this car, and i don't plan on buying another alto, it was a slow car when it came to selling on by that i mean not much interest from potential customers which would put me off buying another. It was only bought as a bit of a project to do something when off work last year due to covid.
      However, the information should all be out there to do a bit of independent research. It is quite a simple engine in these cars, sensors would not take too long to figure out. unfortunately Suzuki did not make the manual too easy to find for this alto but get the likes of a haynes manual for a Toyota Aygo and see the location of the sensors and their names.
      This is a different engine but if you get a grasp of the sensors on one engine the theory will carry over to another. Owners clubs may also be a good thing to join, model specific issues will be frequently discussed, any preventative maintenance to avoid a common problem, or quick fixes for that car should be detailed. The owners club here in the UK/Ireland i will admit was not very busy. However, i recall you mentioned you are from india, i belive these were built there? Are they more common in india, perhaps it is easier to find technical information and there might be a larger owners club? I am interested to know.

Later I find out when I move and hold the gear on the first transmission it does work but I can feel the gear is not all the way in the 1st transmission (does it make sense?) and then when I want to move it to the second I have to put pressure to do it( I feel it chew). and again the same for the third as the first and the forth same as the second. so based on your knowledge and experience can you help me to figure out why that happened.
    knowing that, I took it to a mechanical boy and he thought for the first while the problem in the transmission plastic, but later he found out not. and then he told me, he might need to check the gear box and it ganna cost me alot but the problem that I feel he just wanna try not based on knowledge. can you help me with my question please??

      I would not use the term first, second, third transmission they would suggest that you changed the transmission ie gearbox that amount of times. What you mean is gear i assume. First, second third gear...
      It is possible that your clutch cable has stretched or is out of adjustment and not fully releasing the clutch causing the chew/grinding sounds perhaps.
      There could be something inside the gearbox along the lines of the selector forks that may need to be looked at but in that case its a job for a specialist, easiest thing to start off with checking the cable.

      Thanks for you response, I really didn't expect it, and sorry for the delay I didn't get notification for your response. So when I mentioned first,second ect. I meant to say when I stick the gear into first gear and second gear ect. ( My English is broken I'm trying my best to lear 😊) . I'm going to try the clutch cable first, I hope it's the source of the problem 😭.
      Respect for you and your channel

      No worries, your english is very good. I just asked because i have on occasion had to change the transmission on a car 3 times on a car before i got a good one albeit that was a honda jazz.
      Try the clutch cable first and if you find out any more let me know, i am interested to hear how this gets fixed.

      I'm telling you, you are specialist 👌🏼, I took it to 2 garages and still insisting that the problem in the gear and they said easier for you to change it all 😭. But I was convinced in what you said tell I found the right person and the looked at it and he did a quick check up and then we end up with the clutch cable is twisting or chewing 🤣.
      Thanks alot man you saved 900 $ for me 🥀

    Neat video. But... what is going on with these cars? Are they bad, or? Example:
    I bought a new Suzuki-4 in 1998. Cared it well, drove easy with it, as an Alto is designed for. (Drove it different compared to the Lancia 2.0 I, I owned.)
    Kept the Alto for 24 years as first owner.
    No extravagant maintenance done, just regulare oil changes etc..... Now an incredible 400.000 km's (TRUE!) are driven by myself, my wife and the 3 kids.
    - No gearbox problems... first original engine in place...never removed the head. Second clutch is now on its end, they last 200.000. Rust was the main problem. Homokinetic joints last 150.000 km generally.
    Do the Alto owners overstrain them, or neglect maintenance?

      @peugeotCitroen2CV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think there is just an inherent weakness in the gearbox caused by the use of cheap input shaft bearings. I sold this car but think it should last for a fair few miles running higher quality brand name bearings on the input shaft.
      400,000km is a commendable mileage.
      Rust generally gets most Japanese cars especially here with the salted roads, i know as i have an MX5 tucked away in the shed.
      The rest of the car tends to last.

      Is it making any noise?
      If its just the bearings change them, a set of decent brand bearings should leave it a good box. I think they skimped on quality

      @@peugeotCitroen2CV no, thank god, but the clutch pedal had zero free play, not good for release bearing or friction plate, but very easy for me to rectify.
      had a peugeot 106 diesel for 13 years, 24 years old, but never any trouble except the stupid plastic bit breaking on the clutch cable about every 6 years, till it failed on emissions, greatly missed.

      @@peugeotCitroen2CV oh ok no problem.
      I am from india and we have this same car in india named as A-star. And i own an Alto k10 which i guess has the same engine 1.0 ltr, 3cyl 67bhp engine 5-speed manual trans.
      Now my questions are:
      1. Is the process same for replacing clutch assembly upto the part of removing gearbox from engine ?
      2. Is that necessary to remove self/starter assembly to remove gearbox or it can be done without removing it ? As i can see there are lot of things you removed to get to that assembly.

      @@sahildhiman5400 Hi there
      Yes the process is mostly the same for removing the clutch as the gearbox still has to come off.
      The starter bolts go into the gearbox which is why the starter is removed, i do not work too often on these Suzuki's so i am not sure if there are shortcuts you can take to avoid needing to remove the inlet manifold. It did seem quite a cumbersome design compared to say the toyota aygo which is a similar type of car.
