How To Gain Full Permissions to the C Drive in Windows 10

- If you want to get full permissions in Windows 10 then you have to allow a user to take ownership, auditing, & effective access control of the drive. Most of the time we need full access to the C drive in Windows 10 to perform specific tasks.
Steps to change ownership in Windows 10
1. Right-click on the C drive, go to properties, and "Security" tab.
2. Go to the "Advanced" option.
3. Change the Ownership
4. Select your user account.
5. Grant permissions on the sub containers.
6. Apply and OK.
Repeat the process for the Auditing and Effective access option.
Note: It is advised to create a System Restore point or take a full backup before following any Windows tutorials. In some cases, after gaining the full permissions, a few programs might refuse to open, or Windows might not boot. This is unlikely to happen, but you should take a complete system backup just in case.

in the advanced security settings for local disk tab you open i have one more tab that says "share". and that tab only shows a user that I don't know who it is and I can't change it. I was hacked a while ago and I factory reset my computer and it's still there, what can I do? help I'm desperate :(
Given that everyone runs different systems and configs, I can understand that some users may have issues. I have an older HP Compaq Model AT492AV w/Windows 10 and had no problems following the reset. The vendor installer had full rights to my computer so I wanted to have full control. It took more than 20 minutes but if you are patient and careful, just follow the process. Thanks for the information.
It works fine by me. In any case, it's always recommended to create a full backup when attempting to change ANYTHING in the system. This is just one of the few examples where it may cause a big issue.
Hi, I have 2 log in windows 11 as Admin (for my personal use) and another log in as user ( for staff) how to secure the admin data that should not be visible or accessed by the staff id (local account ) ?
This process broke windows for me. Even after retracing steps and reverting everything back to normal my computer was still fked up. I had to run a full reset and reinstall windows.
So if i were to follow these steps and change some icon would it mess smt up?

Don't do that. It messes up with your windows files permission ( couldn't use my PIN anymore and windows was so buggy I had to format it. )

Unless you know exactly what you are doing, and what to do after to revert this, do not do this. This can break your windows install, and if you have a virus this essentially gives them the same access to your PC as an Admin.

It's making everything an inheritable object that messes up your whole computer. Don't check the box at the bottom. And don't delete your system 32 files. Now I have to reset my whole computer because that checkbox was too vague.
I followed the tutorial and it worked. I gained full acces of my drive BUT my task bar stopped working, i couldn't connect to new WiFi anymore, and a bunch of other inconvenience. I had to reset the laptop.

People set to everyone, to re Include trusted installer with user and admin. Stuff won't run on c dive even if made by Microsoft if you change to user or admin only permissions.

Guys don't do this. Don't do what this man is saying. I did this SAME thing and now I am suffering. Unfortunately, my WHOLE PC is now messed up. My desktop screen has become unfunctional (like some apps on the desktop does not open on clicking). I tried undoing all the permissions granted to C-drive, but, but, very unforrunately; after "right-clicking on C-drive" , and then clicking on "Properties", and then clicking on "edit" just above the permissions list, my PC gets hanged for more than 5mins and when I return to see what is left of it after that time, I become much agrieved to see that a dialogue box is being displayed which reads : "Unable tp open the permission granting box. Access is denied." Now, after this mishap, i tried to reset my PC by going to Settings>then Update and Security>then Recovery>then (the very first option of) 'Get Started'..........
But, very sadly after I press the 'Get Started' option of Resetting PC, the whole computer FREEZES AND LAGS (yes, again😥😭) like anything for 5mins straight after which 'Settings' closes by its own.
Guys, its NEVER EVER a good idea to mess around with your C-drive, to change its PERMISSIONS or whatever.

Don't ever do that shit, it f***ed up my motherboard that it was unable to boot and VGA led was coming up. Luckily, BIOS Flashback saved the day.

Now I can download files to C or copy files to C, but still I can't create new files in root C... on subfolders it's fine, or on other drive, then I can copy to root C... It's annoying. I was doing many stuff, basically changing permissions on whole drive, it was taking long time, and constantly some alerts were prompting... Also I messed up something and my start bar was not responding after those permissions changes, so I had to restore system at one point... PAIN...

Yeah, this does not work on Windows 10 updated to 2023. I am on my third re-install. I can confidently say this no longer works.

Next time, NEVER save to the root of your C drive. My mom did this a couple of months ago to her brand new laptop. Some other users could have access to her private information if she does share her laptop.
