      So my dodge Durango accelerating fast when I put it in park, and it's idling the same way like yours. Could I just need a throttle position sensor to fix my problems.

    Changed mine two years ago on my 2006 Durango. Worked great. I took it to the local Dodge dealer and they had no idea why the RPM's fluctuated like that. Fixed it myself after seeing another TH-cam video. The bad sensor actually caused my Durango to shut off while I was towing our small boat home from vacation.

      This is EXACTLY what's happening to me right now! I was on the freeway going 70mph and it just stalled! I had like 6 seconds to pull over before the wheel locked up.

    Thanks for the video, this completely fixed my vehicle's hesitation and inconsistent idle. I also had it stall a few times at stoplights. I would recommend for the first step try a fuel additive with PEA, such as chevron techron. This will clear any deposits in the fuel system. In my case, the throttle position sensor was the problem. After changing the sensor not only does it idle better but I also immediately noticed much more responsive acceleration. If feels like I added thirty horsepower. I would also recommend disconnecting the negative battery terminal before the installation. After replacing the TPS and reconnecting the terminal it will reboot the computer system. If others replace the TPS and the problem still persists the next step is checking either the mass airflow sensor (MAF) or manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP) depending on the vehicle.Thanks again, I hope this video help others as much as it did me :)

    THANK YOU! My truck isn't the gutless turd I thought it was and no more of that idle up and down. I bought the truck like this when my good truck was totaled and I was in a pinch. Now I'm not thinking of it as a temp truck. Thanks again. Subscribed.

    before you replace anything on a durango that wont stay running after a dead battery replace or recharged, you need to do the following to reset your computer chip: 1) disconnect neg cable 2) turn key to start position and hold for 30 seconds while pushing your gas to the floor. 3) reconnect your neg terminal. 4) restart your engine and it will run fine.

      Battery went completely dead when my truck was at a body shop and it would not idle after charging the battery. Came here and saw this post. My logic part of the brain said if a batt. cable is unhooked no current or information will flow anywhere, therefor this will not work. Then I thought if I take 45 seconds and try this and it does work great and if not I lost 45 seconds. No clue why or how this worked but just got back from a little road test and my truck is idling perfect. Can anyone tell me how this worked? Thank you for the info.

I've gone through my wife's Dakota repairing issues and hoping each time that would be it. Then I'd get another code or codes that kept the check engine light on. I swear the truck is possessed. I just bought a 2002 Dodge Durango SLT a couple of days ago and I took it to get emission tested and the guy said that it idled high and that's when I found this video. I went ahead and purchased the throttle position sensor to get rid of the high idle; unfortunately that did not work. Now gonna replace the idle control valve right underneath that TPS and I'm really hoping that works.

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your experience Patrick. Having an idle that is high is a common symptom of the Idle Control Valve beginning to fault. Im glad to hear you changed your Throttle Position Sensor as well because those fail every 5-8 years from articles I've read in the past...so now you should be good to go for awhile on that note haha...Definitely keep me posted on your repair. Please Subscribe to the channel and turn on your TH-cam notifications that would be sweet thanks again Patrick!

      DIY With Michael Borders thanks for the swift reply Michael. Yeah I mean even though replacing the TPS didn't get rid of the high idle it doesn't hurt to have a new sensor though you know what I mean? So like I said I'm gonna replace the idle control valve today and see if that gets rid of the engine code and high idle but if that does not work I'm going to check for vac leaks and go from there. I'll keep you in the loop.

    So I own a dodge Dakota sport 02 and we just replaced our cat( the main one apparently there's 3 for our model n make) now our trucks doing this surging thing while in park. ( just like yours was) We are do for smog this month Oct, and well wouldn't u no these Lil things decide to malfunction right as we are ready to take it down to our mechanic for smog. It cost us 650$ for the cat which isn't bad considering the original one was gna cost us 1,200! But in the state of California they do not make original cats for our year of truck. Anyhow the universal one was the only way to replace it. Our mechanic had to modify it. In which case he did a fabulous job. Im assuming I'm gna have to replace this throttle position sensor before I smog it right? THANK U FOR THIS VIDEO. IT LOOKS VERY EASY, I love the fact ur assistant is female, cuz well I'm a female to. Rob P Thanks for checking out the video! Have you had any recent work done to your engine? I have a friend that ran into a similar issue years ago and it dealt with carbon build up in his throttle body. I'm not so sure this is your issue though but I'm not going to rule it out. Have you replaced the spark plugs and wires within the last 2 years?

      DIY With Michael Borders Thanks for the reply . Yes I changed my plugs 2 months ago and I actually don't have wires I have individual coils but I think you're right about the carbon build up I actually have done a lot of work on the car lately because it sat for almost 2 yrs in my driveway but I've had the Idle issue for longer than that and always thought it might be a vacuum leak until recently Because if it was it would always have surging idle but it goes away which leads me to wonder if it might be a failing TPS or MAP or IAC Valve I just ordered a TPS I have a good feeling about this

      DIY With Michael Borders So I have replaced everything I mentioned and took my Throttle Body and Intake Manifold apart replace the Gasket and cleaned everything out No change also Had to replace my Harmonic Balancer last week and decided to also do the Timing belt Water pump and Tensioner. Idle still Revving until I take it out of park that resets it for some reason as long as I put it in D or R the idle will be steady.

  • @NXT_LVL

    Mine did that years ago. Hasn't done it sense. What I figured out was, even after getting a new tank of fuel, the ethanol would draw water after sitting for a couple of days and faster if you left it outside in a humid climate (Florida) and not in a garage and then try to run the truck on it. Threw some octane booster in it, and drove around. I then swapped to the ethanol free fuel (if it's available at your station) I thought it was a sensor but the truck never bucked or accelerated oddly from a stop light. It never ran rough driving around town, cruising the highway and WOT was normal After coming home from getting fuel once I let it idle and as soon as i put it in park it started surging. rev it and the rpms would fall below 500 on recovery and the truck would struggle to avoid a stall. Since swapping to the Ethanol free fuel (even in 2022 with the prices i do half tanks of 87 and 87/89 ethanol free ) but add in small bit of injector cleaner and octane booster every 2-3 months.

    I have a problem when I speed up from idle. Above 2500 or 3000 rpm it begins to miss and cut out. I had that problem on my PT Cruiser and when I checked the crankshaft sensor, I found the wiring had been worn through while touching some hoses. It actually wore through the ground wire. Not that my Dakota problem is the same, but it's the same symptoms.

    Ive replaced my Throttle Position Sensor a few months ago, took it to a shop and at the time I did have a vacuum leak. And it was a Intake Manifold that had a crack in it. I got that done. Also installed a new Camshaft, Crank Sensor, Idle Air Control Sensor, Purge Valve Solenoid. Since I got the Intake done, it doesnt run so rough as it used to. However, the needle still goes up and down feeling like it wants to stall. I also know that there is a small slice in the rubber hose that connects from the Purge Valve to the engine wrapped with electrical tape. (Small hose that connects to hard plastic) on the Driver side wrapped with electrical tape. The current codes that are popping up are 0456, 0440 & 0522. I dont know if that has anything to do with it...any suggestions?

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for checking out the video. That's a lot of work fixing all those parts and still running into this annoying idle issue. How often is the truck used? The reason I ask is because I have a friend that has a 02 Dakota and uses it railey to pull his trailer....which he only pulls once a month. The engine sits long terms without starting. We talked about it and he began driving his truck for a few days straight and never saw the idle issue again. The second option may be...as silly as it sounds...an old/clogged air filter. With having a shop complete all that work, you would think the issue would be solved. Keep me posted! 😀👍

    • @AnnoyingLAMP
      @AnnoyingLAMP 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its my daily driver. The Air filter is a little dirty but at the same time I replaced it 2+ years ago roughly around that but it still isnt that bad. Just one day it started doing it and I really thought the Intake Manifold would solve it. I still wonder if its the slice in the hose causing it..I forgot what its called...(my has a green plastic cap kinda in front of the brake booster sortof) On your Dakota, itll be the same setup if you saw it. But its driving me crazy...alos a few months ago. I took off the top cover off the engine and cleaned the Mass Air Flow Sensor...I only did that because that part is around $80.00. It idles up and down when it wants to.

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely understand the annoyance. The engine relies on the BIG THREE components for correct and efficient performance.
      1. Air
      2. Fuel
      3. Spark
      That number one item may be experiencing a lack of performance due to the leak in the vacuum line.

    • @AnnoyingLAMP
      @AnnoyingLAMP 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Within the next few days, I will be popping the hood and inspecting the small things such as Air Filter again, the one hose with a small slice. I doubt the Gas cap. When I had the work done to it, they did take a smoke machine to it. But I have a locking gas cap, Im starting to think if its even a Vapor Canister causing all this. It only acts up when it wants to. If im sitting at a light, it will barely do anything. At a different time, the needle will go crazy and sometimes will drop below 500 RPM when sitting at a light. I just dont understand it.....

      Thanks for watching & we hope the video helped. This is very common. Our engine on our Camry does the same thing. A cold engine requires a slightly higher rpm after start to keep the engine running. As the engine warms up, the onboard computer will communicate with all sensors & begin to allow engine rpm to decrease slowly until 800-1000 rpm’s. Hope this helps.

      Thanks for watching & sharing your experience. A few things come to mind!
      1. Any loose connections. Do a thorough inspection of all electrical wiring throughout system to verify that there are no loose connections.
      2. Any signs of stress on the electrical wiring? We recommend doing an inspection and verifying that you see no signs of stress such as melted wires or frayed wires... these conditions will ultimately cause electrical shorting/arching and interrupt the electrical current.
      3. An old battery will definitely cause a lack in starting power...especially in cold weather/temps. Purchasing a brand new battery will definitely help the efficiency of engine starts moving forward.

      The battery reset didn't fix it, replaced a hose which stopped me from idling high but my RPM is still behaving erratically. PO123 remains, it has to be a wiring issue.

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Axiom Unknown No prob let’s move to the next possible cause that we can check without spending $$.
      Let’s take a look at your intake hose that connects the Air Filter Box to the Throttle Body. Take a very close look & see if you can see any cracks, holes, or disconnection in any form. Then take a few minutes and remove hose & inspect inside to verify there isn’t anything inside interfering with the air flow. Then reinstall. At any point this hose becomes clogged or cracks and allows air from the outside to interrupt the airflow from the Air Filter box to the Throttle Body...your engine will suffer!

      Thanks for watching, we appreciate it! After replacing sensor, the next thing we recommend doing is disconnecting your negative terminal from your battery and letting it sit in this configuration for at least 10 minutes.
      After 10 minutes, reconnect your negative terminal to your battery & start engine. Let engine run for 10-15 minutes.
      Following these steps will give your engine & onboard computer a chance to reset & hopefully reconnect & communicate to the new sensor you installed. Once the onboard computer reconnects to the new sensor, the part should hopefully work & your issue should be resolved.

      Hi Michael. Ok did the disconnect of the negative side terminal and did a further step, inspection of throttle body upon inspection throttle body is very clean since I had taken owner ship about 3 1/2 years ago, Never cleaned it before. I did spray it with throttle body cleaner the red can since I had it all taken apart. I do keep a regular maintenance on my K & N air filter. So at this point still very puzzled at the cause of intermittently dying when driving up to a stop sign or light. Still idles at about 600 rpm. Might have to take it in to the dealer. Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your comment. Let’s get this figured out.
      Any time you run into these symptoms...it is most likely due to a transmission issue.
      First thing to check: Transmission fluid level. If your fluid level is low, your transmission is not being properly lubricated...leading to inefficient performance. If fluid level is low you want to refer to your owners manual and purchase the correct transmission fluid recommended for your vehicle.
      If your fluid is good, your transmission might be weakening. Definitely not uncommon! Keep us posted!

      Hey Jerome, I have the 4.7 which my wife has been complaining of slow shifting. Come to find out there is a sensor when you remove the transmission pan. It's a Fluid Pressure Sensor which is roughly $40 at Rockauto.com. I don't trust eBay but OReilly and Autozone over charge for parts that tend to go bad prematurely. There could be other sensor or simple fixes BEFORE guessing the transmission is going bad. Hope that helps...

      William B Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your experience William. It’s a great start. I recommend replacing this part as it is very simple and cost friendly.
      After replacing this part you are still experiencing the same symptoms, it’s very possible that your alternator is beginning it’s early stages of failure. I would verify your alternator is producing a charge for the battery. Take a few minutes and while the engine is running use a voltmeter to verify that the alternator is doing its job... if not it might be time to replace your alternator now rather than later to alleviate breaking down on the side of the road or on the way to and from very important occasions.
      The third thing you might want to consider is a new battery. As we all know batteries don’t last forever. So in the event that you replace the part mentioned in this video as well as your alternator and still no positive progress I recommend replacing a battery.
      Definitely keep us posted! Please subscribe to the channel and turn on your TH-cam notifications that would be awesome thanks again 😎👍🔧🔩

      OK So by unplugging both wire harnesses above the ABS brake module that caused the check engine light
      to come on and disabled the speedometer. The code read that the speed sensor on the transmission was defective/bad. Actually that wasn't the case because ironically I just had that replaced about 6 months ago. I got in touch with my mechanic and he said, "If you plug one of the harnesses back in, see if the check engine light goes out, but also disconnect the battery first."
      Sure enough I did exactly that after plugging the smaller harness back in which didn't make the buzzing sound on the ABS module so I left it plugged in. Engine light went out. Speedometer still doesn't work which probably is tied into that ABS module somehow or another. Going to try and find it online if possible. It's an '00 Durango 4.7L. Saga continues!

      You claimed you disconnected your battery, cleaned it, then reconnected it; why would you assume that a sensor that controls the throttle (revving) would have anything to do with unhooking and rehooking the battery? Try the obvious. Did you check the fuses FOR the ignition, engine, etc? Did you hook up the battery correctly and snuggly? Plus, give more detail of what you did and what the truck is doing when you try to start it.

      Thanks for watching Ralph! Great question. This is usually signs of wear or stress on transmission however it’s very possible that this little part will definitely help. We also recommend replacing spark plugs & wires as well as air filter. This may really improve engine performance! Keep us posted!

      You may have a slight/small and clogged up exhaust....may be catalytic converter....so @ this point the truck isn't much of a drivable / dependable ride....correct? Or does it drive fine and just idle poorly?

    • @80sauce
      @80sauce 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It drives just very slow but yes

    • @80sauce
      @80sauce 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching & it’s possible due to the importance of this part. When this part fails, your engine performance will degrade & may possibly cause other system sensors to detect that something is wrong.
      If that happens, we recommend replacing this part shown in this video & seeing if the engine light turns off afterwards...new part may allow other sensors throughout the engine to go back to normal.
      We hope the video helped. Please subscribe to the channel and turn on your TH-cam notification Bell 🛎 that would be awesome thanks again!
