Aside from that little v6 being kinda gutless I grew to love the truck. My intention was to use it to haul bikes around the desert on weekends. Thank you for this awesome video. I have been chasing a few problems for a while now on my 2001 Dakota 5 speed. The two that you provided in this video were the valley pan and the crankshaft end play. Your video described all the steps I have already taken to fix the problems and they were still there. I have not replaced the valley pan yet, and I had not thought to check crankshaft end play for the grinding / hard to put into gear. I have watched many video's and yours is BY FAR...the best out there!!! Thank you so much!!
Thank you so much for this information! I've been trying to figure out why my 2000 Dakota has been running so rough. After changing coil packs. It was still running rough. Then I heard about the intake gasket. Now you just confirmed it to me. I can't thank you enough. I'm not sure how much it will cost but at least I know what the problem is. God bless you!

Wow! Thanks! I have an '01 Quad Cab v6. Almost 300,000 miles. I was told (18 yrs ago) about that valley intake gasket. I just started using 93 octane. No more spark knock. Your video is great. My truck has other problems but they're too much to discuss.
I saw this and was really reminded of how good my 03 Dakota SLT 3.9L has been to me. It's given me zero major issues so far, and only a few minor issues that I either have fixed or plan on fixing. Had a misfire on cylinder 6 last year, original wiring from the distributer ate through the coating and fused to the number 4 wire. Had a full tune up and problem solved. Had an exhaust leak on the exhaust manifold as well, took it a step further and installed a set of quality short-tube headers, a magnaflow premium cat and a magnaflow rumbler dual chamber muffler. I also installed a cold-air intake and a ported throttle body (because why the hell not?). Only issues rn are a bit of play in the steering (needs new tie rod bushings) and a slow-shifting trans (needs new shift solenoids). Truck has 211k miles on the original engine and trans and still runs like a champ. When the engine or trans finally goes out, I'm probably going to swap a 6.4L V8 with the Dodge 8-speed auto into it. And despite several road trips to the northern states by the previous owners, it has ZERO rust, save the original exhaust, which is expected regardless of the environment. I love this truck to death, and out of the Toyota Echo and Saturn Vue I have previously own, and the Ford Ranger I currently own, it is easily the best vehicle I have ever invested in. ❤

I have a '03 Dakota 3.9L too with a little over 180,000 miles. I have a bit of play in the steering wheel and a slow shifting trans as well, seems to take forever to shift into third gear. I checked the EVAP hoses since it was throwing the EVAP code and it does have some cracking on the inside of the hoses. Gonna have to replace those and get her a full tune up. Had to replace the blower motor fan relay behind the glove box since the fan speeds wouldn't work on any speed except low. I also have a '07 Saturn Vue, lol. And the sun roof is a bitch on that! It keeps leaking because the drain tubes keep coming off the nipples. Had to have it fixed and the electrical wiring replaced where it leaked under warranty. And the damn thing started leaking again out of warranty this time.
@@J.G.3 check your throttle value cable, it's the one on the back side of the throttle body, towards the firewall. After being set for so long, it could be stretched. If the line is too loose or tight, it will dramatically affect shifting points and behavior. There should only be about 1/8"-1/16" of play in the cable. But the solenoids are a weak link, overdrive solenoid is my problem child rn. It still works, but it gets stuck between third and fourth for about a second before finally engaging 4th.

Good video. Excellent narration, easy to follow because it didn’t go too slow. Good camera work and lighting as well. I have an 03 Dakota with a few of these problems/symptoms. Thank you!
Great video nice to have things to look for. Never heard of a throw out plate. The heat issues are something else you could mention like the blend door and heater hose reroute on the V6 to get the hottest possible water in the heater core. These videos are very helpful to lots of people!. Update.. Heater core was blocked. Very small heater core. Single row. Full day with help. Heat works good now!
I have an 04 Dakota that I bought new. 205k miles as of Aug 2021. Replaced transmission at 110k. Have also replaced water pump, AC compressor and on third set of engine coils. Various other items as normal wear and tear goes. I admit I don't like my truck as much as I used to... but it still looks and runs decent.
Tell me the truth. Are those seats not the most uncomfortable you have ever sat in? Not even trying to be a smart ass. I just want to know I’m not the only one.
This video is short, sweet & very well presented. U can see the problem in the intake belly pan gasket, open the throttle blade, look down & U will see all the oil & where it traces from. I have done 100's of these belly pan, gasket & bolts oh & the bolts were the issue. People overlook the PCV Breather Filter on these & it really makes the throttle body blades dirty if not addressed. Also the 3.9L is a poor design regarding balance ..Let me quote 1 of my Favorite Chrysler Engineers "It will shake your dentures loose."
Thanks a lot for these. I've had my '99 3.9l 5speed for over 23 years and luckily haven't had any of these issue other than the crank sensor in the first 3 or 4 years of ownership. It's been a great truck I should probably treat it better. I hope to keep it another 20 years. 🤞
Thanks for the tips. I have one. Loose axle shafts on the 4wd's. The spline design is the worst. Too much rattle. Heater cores are buried . Dodge built the dash and truck around it.
Sent this to my buddy who won’t listen to anything I tell him ( I work at my own shop ) He really listened to you! Even said the same things!! Anyways thanks again!! 😂
Thank you for this video! My 98 was stalling intermittent with no codes. Sure enough that vacuum cap you show had fallen off! Reinstalled it with zip ty to keep it planted and swapped the IAC valve just to be sure and she's running sweet again. Thanks very much! Btw you have a great smile 😊
I’m gonna be honest with you any truck is bad with rust depending on where you purchase it. I have a 99 Dakota and the dash is in mint condition and there’s not a spec of rust on the body , and or the chassis
I’ve got a 2002 with the 4.7, around 180k and she’s running great, aside from what I think is my starter shitting out for the second time or some kinda electrical prob, it smells like a electrical fire once I turn the truck over and the volt meter will hit the floor after a minute
Great videos! 😮I have a ‘94 garaged cream puff I bought at an estate sake seven years with 90K on it. Original owner was a retired Mobile 1 guy. Now at 148K, only repairs was rebuilt front end including hubs when I got it. Added the factory trans cooler, replaced the exhaust manifold gaskets one at a time due to broken bolts on rear cylinders (hemi’s do the same thing). Recommend servicing transmission every 30K regardless of what quality fluid you use. Service engine every 5K mikes with Mobile 1 extended protection. Expect to see 200K without major repairs on it. Great size truck for personnel use. Is a shame we were never offered the diesel version South America got. The 4.7L V8 was a clean sheet design AMC had done for the Grand Cherokee, but didn’t get to put into production. Dodge ran with it when Chrysler bought out AMC.
I have the rough idle and sluggish off the line issue. I think you nailed it on the head with the intake valley pan, been pullin my hair out trying to solve this issue but I feel that may just be it. Very informative video and I thank you.
#1 for random stalling with P0300, crank codes and other random errors should be pcm failure. Do a bump test on the pcm. Find it, tap/slap/bump the cover....if it dies, its bad.
I bought mine, an extended cab, in April of '98. I also bought the extended warranty, probably the only one to ever pay for itself. Heater hose blew off on the drive home from the dealer. The front crank seal went bad after 6 months. The first of three cat convertors was replaced for severe rattling inside. Front suspension, upper and lower A arms and bushings replaced @ 41k. The Goodyear tires, part of the tire and handling package, were shot by 28k. Great grip in summer. Worthless in snow, couldn't move in 1" snowfall. Fuel line rubbed a hole in it under the cab. Common problem I was told. Front shocks shot at 45k. Ticking sound from top end of engine from about 25k on, shop said it was nothing, probably the Mobil One oil I always used. The guy who bought my truck with some warranty left on it at 95k had the dealer replace the cam and lifters. The admitted that was the problem all along. The truck started to die along the interstate, and would sometimes take 10 minutes or so before it would start, acted like no fuel. Dealer couldn't find the problem, replaced the fuel pump. The next time it happened, the found that it was a bad sensor shutting off the fuel. There were probably more that I don't recall, as I said the extended warranty helped, but I had to pay the deductible each time. But as bad as this truck was, it still is the best looking truck I ever owned. The sporty wheels, and for a bit, the big Goodyears. The factory extended wheel flairs, the aftermarket hood with dual air scoops, the matching cap over the back. When I think back to those three years I owned it, that's what I remember, not all the bad stuff that plagued me during that time. Fortunately I didn't have any of these top five problems.
Isn’t it though but people think I’m a weird ass because I know more about cars than most women do and body stuff too. I also own 3 Dakotas a2003 sly standard cab 2004 Dakota sxt standard cab 3.7 2004 Dakota 4x4 crew cab 8cylinder
I own a 02 dakota! It's only a sport but I'm seeing lots of potential in it, I'd like to do a v8 swap in it for my sons 16th birthday. He's 5 now so I may not have enough time. 🤔😁🤣👍
Have an 02 with the 4.7 V8 2WD that was been one of most reliable vehicles I’ve ever owned which is amazing since the interwebs will tell you these are junk. My wheel wells in the bed rusted and I live in the FL with no salt on the roads. Any place else it would have rotted to the ground by now. A few sensors have failed but all were easy and cheap fixes. Stupid brake calipers had torxs bolts that made them impossible to remove, had to take it to a shop for what should have a driveway brake job. Mine has the ABS sensors on the hubs. Just put new tie rods on and honesty it could use various new bushing up front as it squeaks and creaks. I am the original owner and that infamous cheap plastic interior has held up great for an 18 year old truck. These things are “right sized” - not too big, not too small.
I have an ‘03 with the 4.7 and stick… agree it’s been the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Bought from second owner with 60K about 12 years ago, now approaching 200K and running strong. Regular maintenance, the only major repairs have been clutch and water pump. Hope to hand it down to my son when he starts driving.
Years ago I had a lube shop install a brand new caliper and when they installed it, they cross threaded the caliper pins and ruined both of the threads on my steering knuckle, after that, the brakes never worked right on the drive side and it caused damages to the brake caliper, the rotor, and the brake pads, when they drove my truck back to the shop, the brakes got so hot and looked like my truck was on fire from all the smoke because the caliper was unable release and was sticking very horribly. After that I never took my vehicle to a quick lube shop again, finally 5 years later I decided to work on my truck myself and then I discovered how they messed up, they probably cross threaded the slide pins because they didn’t start slide pins by hand and instead probably torqued them with an air gun. I ended up getting a new steering knuckle at the junkyard when I learned that the threads were stripped on the old knuckle, the steering knuckle from the junkyard was in very good condition and barely had any rust on it.
Rust is from salted roads. I've had vehicles from the north and have seen plenty of the same vehicle explicitly drove in the south. Northern ones rusted from floor up, Southern ones might have a spot in the weirdest corner.
Ive had none of these issues thankfully but I was told the u joints on the main drive shaft go bad a lot as well. Had to replace those but nothing major since I bought it used in 2004 and now has 257000 miles on her.
Very good review. I have one of these Dakotas and It has a ton of miles but is still a good truck. This video has hit on most every problem I have with the truck. Thank you for the simple and informative video.
Wow first part of the video helped a lot. Explained the exact symptoms I’ve been having and what I’ve done. Never did I think to check I knew it might be a vacuum leak but no clue where to check. Thanks!
1A Auto is In tune with potential clients by using these platforms whether it be TH-cam or other platforms, smart. I know other companies do it too they don't seem to be as thorough and have a broad base video library like 1A. But I'll wager this, they're getting smarter seeing what their competition does. Kudos to the young lady who hosted this video, she's to-the-point no bulshit.
Awesome veejayo. I have this truck. It's got 300k on it. Best truck I ever owned. 3.9. 20+ mpg. No oil leaks. Minor problems. Still going. She's not a new englandah.
One specific issue I encountered was the highlight switch going bad which required it to be replaced. The cost of replacement was close to$1000.00, thank goodness for the extended warranty which covered the cost of replacement.
I just replaced the alternator on my friend Bobbies Dodge Dakota 2002 . She's been working hard to have her own truck ..... and has came a long way (it needed a lot of work ; which I had no hand 'til today) Anyways other issues came up after her test drive ....... so I came home and found your video . WOW ! I ... love .... you ..... You are the best ! . But seriously if I had to guess , I would say you're already married . But truthfully .... how many proposals have you gotten since starting this channel ??? I ask because I can't possibly be the only person smitten after viewing their first video of you . Haha , anyways cheers and thank you ! plus I'm happily married .... I'm just say'n ..... wow .
2004 6cyl. Rust underneath, radiator blew up, auto trans issues, cooling system issues......best thing about the truck it lasted 12 years with no major issues......and still had original exhaust system....
Great tips matter of fact I'm getting the PO400 I think it was basically misfires up and down the block but I've been pointing to the direction of the computer. I'm also getting a low crank or Cam shaft sensor reading Bank one so if fixing the computer don't work looks like I'm heading to that valley.
We have a 1997 Dakota Sport, 88k miles, runs like it's brand new, never had any engine codes yet. Only thing that really sucks is the vents smell really bad, they have for many many years, and also the paint fell off everywhere back in like 2002 which seems to be pretty normal for these trucks.
had my 98 since new, 4 water pumps, zero issues otherwise, rear diff is starting to howl slightly, i think its got a slightly collapsed lifter. 230k miles needs a bushing replacement everywhere
p-0456/p-0457 are small EVAP leaks which she is referring about the p-0455 is the large one where you have to replace the whole canister yourself but other then that its all good.... the small evap leak could range from those small hoses to the gas cap and yeah if the gas cap seal still looks good and you replaced everything still looks good, just replace the gas cap.
I loved mine, hell I ramped it off a hill at 100mph and got airborne. Still didn't give me any trouble. I'm trying to find a low mileage one now to buy again
Bought mine new in 99. After test drive had only six miles on it. Club cab sport, 3.9 automatic. Cat rattle at 20k. At 58k, cat rattle again, both times replaced under warranty. Front brakes lasted til 60k. (Rear brakes lasted til 300k). 170k transmission rebuild. Pcm replaced about 200k. Maybe 4 or 5 water pumps, and heater core. Now at 308k, not a daily driver anymore, still purrs like a kitten. Nothing ever repaired as far as engine. Still has original plug wires, cap and distributor. Bumper to bumper, not a single spot of rust, nowhere. Best vehicle I've ever owned. I'm 63 and owned a lot of them, different makes and models. Kept inside of course, for the most part. Was daily driver for 20 years.
Gotta love a woman who knows her sh-t when it comes to automotive! Remarkable video, obviously by someone with shop experience. Impressive and well done!
You missed one! The wet rear end means the pinion seal went out. The rear ends on these trucks will go bad if they are not kept in A1 shape. If you live in a wet climate, or a salt area, the front fenders will ALL rust from the inside out right where the engine emblem is stuck on behind the headlights. One day it looks fine, suddenly you see some rust. It is too late, the whole front of that fender will soon have a hole in it the size of a cantelope. Dodge had the briliant idea of putting a rubber seal to stop wind noise on the bottom edge of the doors, and between the cab and bed. Perfect if you want to trap salty winter road mess against the rocker, or even just rain or car wash water against the body for extended periods to rot it out. These trucks are very dependable, cheap and easy to repair, and frankly given the era they were built run forever. Comfortable and capable. They are rapidly vanishing as they get totally worn out, rotten beyond repair from rust, or expense of repair exceeds perceived value. I expect them to gain a cult following in the next ten years as semi-collectible as they are coming up on that magic 20 year anniversary for end of production. These were the blue collar muscle trucks of the 90's.
cant speak for the first two, but from my experience, the idle air control issues are usually fixed by cleaning it, unless it actually has physical damage or corrosion. My dakota with 211k miles is still using the original sensor, but I did have to clean it recently because I was losing power erratically when I let off the gas. And that could even be the cause of #7 in some cases.
Y’all: Ac drain leaks into cabin.. look under passenger side carpet.. humidity will drop headliner over time and rust out cabin. Bad manufacturing Balljoints.. but still going at 240.000km! Love the v8 2nd gen Dakota 2002
Little tip on my 04 I had too replace the crank sensor and it was not on the bell housing actually under the exhaust manifold on the passenger side must be in the newer years of the generation
The best way I've found to find intake leaks is to spray WD40 in the suspected area when the car is idling. If there's a leak the idle will speed up. I guess starting fluid would work too.
FYI She talks about problems with "the v6 and v8" but there are TWO generations of v8s in this truck and they won't exhibit the same issues. The older models are the "Magnum" 5.2 and 5.9 (or, 318 and 360), but at some point the 5.2 was replaced with the "New Magnum" 4.7 overhead cam v8. Don't expect the new 4.7 to have the same issues discussed here as the other motors; it was a clean sheet design. Can be confusing because they tried to call it "new" magnum to maintain the magnum brand, but it's totally unrelated. Especially confusing because the 3.9 v6 continued as the base and the 5.9 v8 continued for the R/T, which are both the old designs and subject to the issues discussed here.
Pull the air cleaner off open the throttle all the way and with a bright light you can look down inside the intake manifold and see the bottom. If you see oil then you need to replace the gasket. Dodge used bolts that are a bit too long and won't tighten up good. Get shorter or grind the stock ones shorter. Also if the gasket is leaking, your tail pipe most likely is very sooty.
I've had none of those issues on my 2004 dakota, what I have replaced is at 100K both exhaust manifolds needed replaced due to old age/warp and failing gasket. This issue creates a ticking upon startup that will go away as they get hot and expand.
I had no real choice but to buy one of these from a co-worker for my commute. Never been a fan of the DAKOTA, but it has a rebuilt engine. Nothing in this video about the automatic transmission, but mine seems like garbage. I suspect it has at least 3 different problems all at once. I just baby it and keep an eye on it. 120,000 miles on it and just feels whipped. 😞most uncomfortable seats I have ever sat in
Mine was an 03 3.9l V6 with 5 speed manual, only problems I ever had was gas cap and random choke on top of constant overheating. Never figured it out so off it went for a new Silverado K1500
Thank you, great advice. I have a 1997 3.9 automatic on the second gear especially if the truck is cold I have to run it to 4 rpm then let go and it usually goes into 3rd no problem. Also when stopping it does a loud kick back? Any ideas?
My grandfather has 2 of these, his main hauling truck for the yearly trip to Maryland from North Carolina is a 2001 SLT with the v8. The 2nd gen dakota is the only dodge I respect
Power window regulators. All of them. They break at the plastic clips holding the cable ends in. Happened first to a Dakota belonging to a coworker, now to three of mine so far (mine is a four-door.)
Very good video of my three Dakota's two of them definitely had number five when they sat and it was raining and then it would go away so I never really looked into it

I have a 1997 Dodge Dakota runs like a hero I appreciate all the information I'm going to check my truck out tomorrow
2001, 4.7, sport. Sitting at 240,000. Drive it back and forth from Texas to California. Through the mountains. I love her.
You rock ,clear explanation & specified where what to look for! Thanks!

Thank you for this video! My 98 was stalling intermittent with no codes. Sure enough that vacuum cap you show had fallen off! Reinstalled it with zip ty to keep it planted and swapped the IAC valve just to be sure and she's running sweet again. Thanks very much!

I’ve got a 2002 with the 4.7, around 180k and she’s running great, aside from what I think is my starter shitting out for the second time or some kinda electrical prob, it smells like a electrical fire once I turn the truck over and the volt meter will hit the floor after a minute
Well done my lady. Looking to buy a used 2004 DD and get the scoop on whats what with it. Now I know. You rock!

Man I love Dakotas. I have two 99 R/T's . Boy am I glad they are southern trucks. The sxt in this vid is obviously a snowbelt truck. wow at the rust.
+John Moore Thanks for the feedback!

Great job on this presentation. Very helpful and clear to understand. Thanks.

Rust. Rust. Rust. That’s their problems. Brake calipers made of cheese. Strip out all the time.
Had one for 17 years. No rust. Not 1 powertrain issue either. Junk primer tho. White paint flaked off big time

Rust is from salted roads. I've had vehicles from the north and have seen plenty of the same vehicle explicitly drove in the south. Northern ones rusted from floor up, Southern ones might have a spot in the weirdest corner.

Great tips matter of fact I'm getting the PO400 I think it was basically misfires up and down the block but I've been pointing to the direction of the computer. I'm also getting a low crank or Cam shaft sensor reading Bank one so if fixing the computer don't work looks like I'm heading to that valley.

I replaced my computer about 8 years ago from my 97 V8. Still runs great. I am not sure the thing is recording engine fault codes anymore though.
I've been considering a older but low mileage dakota. But now... anyway thanks for this review!
We have a 1997 Dakota Sport, 88k miles, runs like it's brand new, never had any engine codes yet. Only thing that really sucks is the vents smell really bad, they have for many many years, and also the paint fell off everywhere back in like 2002 which seems to be pretty normal for these trucks.
same me too
had my 98 since new, 4 water pumps, zero issues otherwise, rear diff is starting to howl slightly, i think its got a slightly collapsed lifter.
Great explanation about the issues... good video and lots of info... thanks
I loved mine, hell I ramped it off a hill at 100mph and got airborne. Still didn't give me any trouble. I'm trying to find a low mileage one now to buy again
Nice execution of Dakota problems.
Finally got an idea why shifting is hard sometimes. I had the clutch assembly replaced because it went completely out. Thank you
Glad the video was helpful!
Brilliant!!! Your explanation was great! Awesome video =D
Thank you!
Made a lot of money replacing ball joints on those. And you forgot the always leaking A/C evaporator.

#6 ECM - No Bus code
#7 Throttle Position Sensor - Surging during driving
#8 Idle Air Control Valve - Rough idle /stalling
+Kevin Usta Thanks for the feedback!
cant speak for the first two, but from my experience, the idle air control issues are usually fixed by cleaning it, unless it actually has physical damage or corrosion. My dakota with 211k miles is still using the original sensor, but I did have to clean it recently because I was losing power erratically when I let off the gas. And that could even be the cause of #7 in some cases.
Muchas gracias por este video, me ha servido mucho, saludos desde Chile
Y’all: Ac drain leaks into cabin.. look under passenger side carpet.. humidity will drop headliner over time and rust out cabin. Bad manufacturing Balljoints.. but still going at 240.000km! Love the v8 2nd gen Dakota 2002
Yeah what is that about, and is it fixable?
Im at 400,000 miles on my 03, v8 standaed shift. I guess ive been very lucky. No major issues. Good info tho.
