So glad to help TRG! You are one of several TNPrs working in the stores that used the Sheffield 1282 and love it. I am amazed at how well that little plastic knife holds up too! Thanks dude.
@@nutnfancy I have the all steel Sheffield , used it for quite a while (styled like the 12614). If these plastic ones hold up, it might be time to change to a lighter one. love the Ferrum Forge, the TUKK, and the Mecarmy but too expensive for a utility blade holder !

Hello there sir! Congrats on your military retirement. My husband has been watching your channel for several years. You are a staple in our household. I always hear your videos about knives, guns and flashlights on his laptop. He always watches your vids prior to making his purchase on Amazon. However, TODAY your video caught my attention when I heard you say that you are a retired Lt Col! That is so awesome. We are both active duty serving in the USAF. Hooah! Well sir, you just earned COOL points in my book and we will continue to watch your videos and support what you do. V/r, Shayna Krause
The Gerber Eab lite is not made obsolete by the plastic Scheffield you brought out at the end. In fact, it's still superior if you consider SAWC. (TL;DR: going from EAB to the Scheffield you save a mere 40 seconds a week on blade changes, but lose the all important, pocket clip, while gaining 30% to 50% width and length when folded, and over DOUBLE the thickness. Bad SAWC trade-off) Sure, exchanging blades needs a screw driver on the EAB. But you have a multi on you always, so that doesn't pose a problem. The weight difference is negligible. But the Scheffield is much bulkier than the Gerber Eab, and the EAB DOES have a pocket clip. So by switching to the Scheffield, you are essentially trading away a pocket clip and a much, much smaller form factor, for a quick release mechanism that you'll only occasionally use. How often do you need to change out the blade? Once a week? How long does on the eab? 30 to 45 seconds. Quick release on Scheffield is probably 3 to 5 seconds. So in exchange for saving a mere 40 seconds a week, you lose the pocket clip -- which is a huge benefit to organization, accessibility, and speed of deployment despite how you minimized that deficiency in the video. You basically said "you don't need a clip on this" because it's so small. But there are dozens of examples of smaller knives you've brought to the table, as well as flashlights and pens that are all smaller than this knife, which do have pocket clips -- clips you have assessed and complemented them on, nutn. You also take the knife from about the size and thinness of a large zippo to something maybe 30-50 percent wider and longer, and at least double the thickness. Not a good SAWC trade off.
I actually started with the Sheffield plastic utility knife that I used at work for a while. I was then given a Dewalt utility knife that is a hybrid between a folding and thumb slide utility knife. I admit that the Dewalt is more complicated than it should be when you have to first unfold the knife then slide the blade out. I have since switched to the Milwaukee Fastback utility knife. Deployment of the Fastback is amazingly smooth and quick. It isn't an assisted open, but push the button and the handle and give it a flick. The Fastback also has the pushbutton quick blade release for changing the blade when needed. Model numbers for the Milwaukee Fastback is 48-22-1906 for the compact, and 48-22-1903 for the version with blade storage. And I was just looking at the Home Depot website for the Model numbers and see that they currently have a deal with both of the knives just mentioned plus a back of 50 general purpose blades for $14.88
I remember your Sheffield vid before Patreon days, and thought wow, $9 for a box cutter? Took a leap and bought the TNP approved Sheffield. Bought it just over 1 year ago today, 9/18/17. HOLY SMOKES I LOVE IT! I use it exclusively for box work, saving my other knives for less mundane duty. It got 5 stars from me then and it still does today.

Just purchased a pair of the little black Sheffields so I can retire the clunker folders to the utility knife drawer in the shop. It will be nice to reduce the weight as those are quite heavy. Sweet! And cheap too at $6.06 each w/free shipping. I have to buy a pair because I have sons like yours (daughters too) and If I didn't buy a second mine would somehow find its way into their collections and I'd be left without. Funny how that works, your knives, rifles, and tools just "migrate". As you well know, its just part of being a good Dad. Let us both count our many blessings and be thankful! Thanks for the KRV.
Nutn after hearing for a year how good a utility blade is i finally gave the Outdoor Edge utility knife a try and I'm in love. Totally changed the way I use my EDC blades
Been rocking the Outdoor Edge SlideWinder for a couple months now. I wear it on my belt, weak side, behind my Leatherman. I use that little beauty probably a dozen times a day for one thing or another.
I don’t use a knife too often as a student but I do carry a knife every day, this in mind, I do not do repetitive cutting, in which a utility knife would be wise, but otherwise do normal everyday tasks, I don’t pamper my knives nor abuse them but rather use them whenever necessary, and when they get dull, I sharpen them and enjoy doing it.
I've been carrying a utility knife for years. It saved me again yesterday when l loaned it to someone at work and it came back with a shattered blade. I'm glad that kind of abuse wasn't inflicted on one of my good knives. (It's also nice to separate clean vs dirty cutting jobs.)
Have been carrying the Milwaukee fastback 3 everyday for a few months now. Super easy to clip on my belt, holds extra blades, and I don't even know its there. I work in a fabrication shop and use it everyday for cutting cardboard, plastic, packages, etc... I don't even notice it hanging on my belt throughout the day Very surprised to not see you mention it.
The smaller Milwaukee is by far the best. Most Home Depot’s carry them. Less then $10. Very rugged and can handle everyday hard use. Yet very small lightweight but still able to get a good grip.
Hey Nutn, great informative video. I agree that my favorite carry boxcutter is the plastic (and durable) Sheffield. I open a lot of packages plus use it in place of an Exacto for finer work. I found mine at Ace Hardware for about $8 big ones, out the door. Another favorite is the Outdoor Edge Slidewinder. It's a tiny (one inch) cutter that's barely bigger that it's standard blade. It's not a folder, but it slides out and locks, and retracts with a push of a spring loaded button. I find it too small for doing fine work, but excellent for opening packages and such. It's advertised as a multi tool; with regular and Phillips screwdrivers and a handy bottle opener. It's metal and plastic with a removable steel clip. It also has good gimping on top and a finger notch on the bottom. It was hard to find a year ago, but it's now in stock on Amazon Prime for $9.95. It comes in black, blue, and orange. Outdoor Edge Slidewinder Utility Knife, Box Cutter, Screwdriver, Bottle Opener, Multi Tool (Orange) www.amazon.com/dp/B078ZLDG89/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_i2ueCb16D3V49 Both of these cutters fit nicely in my jeans' watch pocket. I've added a 550 lanyard for the times when I'm wearing britches without a watch pocket, and have to carry them in my front left pocket, along with my gun of the day in its Blackhawk pocket holster. Speaking of my carry guns.... I've mostly put away my "for work" Glock 40's in favor of something smaller. That would be a Taurus PT111g2 with 1-12 round magazine and 1-18 round mag as a spare. More recently I sometimes carry the slightly smaller SigP365, with 2-12 round mags. I'm pocket carrying the Sig until Blackhawk releases a Serpa for it. I also carry both occasionally in a reinforced Uncle Mikes ankle holster.
I am a heavy equipment mechanic and I use the plastic 1282 everyday because I've lost/broke a bunch of other utility knives. Yes I've broke the 1282s but since there's no pocket clip they go in my watch pocket with a short lanyard, and I haven't lost one yet and they're cost effective!
Milwaukee Fastback better be on this list... deep carry clip, all metal body, blade storage, seatbelt cutter, jimping, great ergonomics, matte red looks sweet... available at most Home Depots $9-13... Dude..
Right on with the Sheffield 1282. Found them in Wal-Mart and bought several to go in tool-kits, the utility drawer in the house and carry. Just like you said, cheap, they weigh nothing and they get the job done.
I never realised that utility knives 🔪 could be so cool, I am liking the pink Sheffield. I purchased the Acetek utility knife in hot red from Amazon UK.
Nutn, I am a huge fan of your videos. A go to when I am looking in to any firearm. I to am a huge fan of utility knives. I was a carpenter most of my life and have carried a folding utility since they hit the market. The one I've been carrying for the past few year and absolutely love is the Kobalt 56653 Speed Release Utility Knife. It is amazing for one handed operation. I swear by it. You really should try it.
My father told me his story when he saw these Warhogs in action. When he was in DesertStorm. Very badass fighting plane with that Gatling gun on the front of it. It just looks sinister. Also i put an model of it when i was 10 years old. Very Cool model Sir. I have the same Utility knife too. Those Kobalts are awesome. Very easy to replace the blade too. Awesome video Nutnfancy
Kobalt and Milwaukee (and probably other brands) make button lock utility knives that are super fast to open and close. Easiest one-handed operation of any utility knife I’ve ever come across.
If you buy a lot of Amazon, these are worth their weight in gold. My goto utility knife is the Craftsman #38000. It's not great for one hand deployment, but it is very light. Glad I am not alone carrying so many blades. I carry the ute, a 3-1/2", spring assist lock back, and a multi-tool, at least.
I wish coldsteel would make a folding box cutter. G10 handle and a triad lock. Base it off a CS Ak47. I'd buy a bunch. Kobalt makes some of my favorite, but the problem with them is while cutting caulking or carpet you tend to hit those releases and it lets the blade out. Craftsman wood handeled ones are nice, but as they age they let blades loose. Husky ones are plainly dangerous to use. Honestly those blades bind in a dangerous way when you're trying to do some serious cutting. Milwuakee base model's are nice, they have some ones with frills but I don't like the thickness of the ones with "features".
I have the sheffield plastic utility knife, and love it. I have lots of knives that cost between 20 to 40 bucks, but carry the sheffiwld way more often than any other knife. It weighs almost nothing, has great retention, and when it goes dull, you can flip the blade to use the other end, or just change it out...
I'm glad Sheffield change the way their blades are held in the knife I have a couple of the older ones where you flip up that top piece and slide it open to change there older models but Sheffield makes a good knife they're 15 + years old and I haven't had any problems with them
I can’t believe you missed this one: Check out the Milwaukee Fastback. Clean lines and plunger-style button lock flips open and closed like an Axis lock. It’s built pretty tough with steel liners and a steel stop pin. Mini torx pivot adjustment. Good fold over pocket clip that rides nice and low. I have no real complaint, except the obligatory thickness of a folding utility knife.
I'm currently using that last Sheffield you showed at work. I was using the Stanley 10-036 as a trim carpenter. I've used my hammer to baton through wood and sheetrock and the knife took it like a champ. For a while at least. Lol. Ended up losing a couple of screws but i abused the hell out of it. Still wor works tho. Maybe a little thick for your liking but I'll probably be buying another one. Thumb stud, pocket clip, liner lock. Wish i could show you this knife. It's beat to hell but still working. Take Care and Be Aware
Can’t believe you missed the Milwaukee Fastback utility knife. It easily deploys one handed with a flick of the wrist (no spring) and and it locks open and closed. The pocket knife model (also called “Fastback” is my EDC blade. They’re both sold at the Home Depot.
I still carry the Gerber EAB have been on and off for the last 4 years. Never had an issue can’t beat the form factor it disappears in the pocket and all you need is a coin to change the blade not to big a deal for me. Good video nutn always love your content.
I always preferred Revell models back in my day, I built an F4 Phantom a bit bigger than the hog on your table back around the mid 1970s. Mine was more Navy flavor for the paint, kind of a blue grey mix, very cool. Gotta bring that our of retirement for my office. Now on the knives, do you ever use the strop? I started after Jeff at CL put a vid out years back. It's a great way to keep the EDC on the sharp side without the full Apex treatment. Thanks for the vids, we're still out here.
I've carried a compact Husky folding utility knife for years and years. it uses the same full sized blade but is about 3/4 the size. lighter and thinner than all the full sized ones but still does the job. i have ten or twelve of them around my house and shop.the carbide 50 pack of blades are great. i have three or four around the shop and one in the trunk of my car. i buy em of the rack at Home Depot and they are pretty cheap
Nice reminder, Nutn. I like the deep pocket clip on the Gerber Superknife Edge on the Amazon page. Since I don't need a lot of purchase for most of what I use a utility blade for, I'm more a fan of the very light non-folding blade holders like the screwpop, Ti-pocket tool, etc..
I have used husky kobalt and all the others pretty much and I can say that they do not compare to the Milwaukee fast back utility knife. The knife is so ergonomic and nice in the hand as well as the design of the blade retainer. You can choke up on it or back. It's a button lock and it swings open and closed so you can quickly cut things. I work in a farm store at the back where we are constantly opening pallets and cutting cardboard and all that stuff. This knife holds up really well. Give it a look guys. You wont be disappointed its 8 to 12 bucks and so worth it
I've been carrying the little Gerber utility knife for some time now I think it's called the ERB or EBT or something like that. I love it. Saves me wear and tear on my more expensive blades. It's only $10 at Walmart. Edit: It's called the EAB.
For anyone wanting the plastic sheffied you can find them at walmart now for like $3.80. Carried the gerber eab for years then got the sheffield, both are great the handle is more comfortable on the sheff. Also i work in a warehouse been using the same plastic knife for 2 years now and never has broke or failed me, dropped it from 20ft and its fine.
I like the last Sheffield but I have to have a pocket clip. Kobalt has a Speed release 56653 with a button to quick deploy and that is what I use all day long, it is lighter than the first two you mentioned yet still strong enough for construction work.
I've owned a couple of the Kobalt utility knives because I like the idea of the extra blade compartment. However, those just do not hold up. That compartment cover always breaks so I went back to carrying a basic, cheap all metal utility knife from Rural King.
YOU HAVE TO CHECK OUT THE MILWAUKEE FASTBACK UTILITY KNIFE. it has a button release that allows you to flip it open super fast. it also has different stop angles for better ergonomics when slicing. its my go to utility knife
Funny that this vid drops the same day I bought my bro-in-law (and myself) one of the massdrop x ferrum forge utility knives. Hope they arrive soon. I've never edc'd a utility knife.
More of a naval fan than for aviation. Still, I've recently been fascinated by WW2 aircraft, the last hurrah for propeller-driven fighters and bomber (C-130 is still going strong) and the pinnacle of their development. Just during the war there were huge advances, mostly on the Allied side. The Spits, Mustangs, and Lightnings were all impressive, but few Americans seem to realize that the USSR developed some top drawer fighters that surpassed the 109s. As far as EDC, I carry one knife, usually a Victorinox Tinkerer. I don't mind sharpening it or others occasionally. To me, it's less wasteful, since there are no blades to throw out. If I carry two of anything (besides pens) it's a flashlight. Knives are simple, but there's a lot that can go wrong with a flashlight.
Waiting on my makers knife to get here from kick starter. Time will tell if it holds up but as far as a skinny utility knife I am pretty excited for it to get here and fully intend to edc it in addition to my normal edc knife
If you like the kobalt knives from Lowe's, try model 56887. It's a button lock with an aluminum handle that's slicker than the rubber one. I use that one daily.
I'm surprised he didn't talk about the Gerber EAB more, considering he did a very positive review on it a long time ago that got me to add it to my EDC. The EAB is $7 so you can't go wrong. I've been carrying one for years now. It's tiny, light, ergonomic, can be opened with one hand. There's two models of the EAB. The original EAB, and the "EAB Lite". I think the original is actually smaller and makes a better EDC blade, but the "EAB Lite" is more ergonomic, so if you are actually going to be using the blade a lot, you might want to get the "EAB Lite". But the EAB does 99% of my cutting needs, I rarely use my regular folder, nor my Leatherman's blade anymore. A pack of "Lenox Gold" utility blades will go a LONG way.
Walmart sells those sheffield’s for super cheap. I keep one in my hockey bag to cut fabric tape (abrasive) and one at home. I need one for my car. I love those things.
Ken onion knife sharpener saves a bunch of time and easy to use but I still here you loud and clear....will be adding a razor to my edc. 👍 thanks for the tip
I use that Gerber every day at work in the oilfield. Been running it for 6months and have had no issues really besides getting mud where the blade release is and it not wanting to release. I would prefer if it could carry more blades like the kobalt does
If you're a tradesman/DiY and are doing a lot of cutting, especially harder material but you want a folding utility knife DeWalt makes two of them. The cheaper of the two is like $10-13, has internal blade storage, liner lock, is rock solid and the blades couldn't be easier to change out. I use mine every day at work. It's thick so not great for normal EDC but it's not too heavy and it's great for heavy duty use, even cutting sheetrock and thick rubber.
I work in TV, theater and cinema, building sets and burn through stanley blades while trimming luan or sheets of styrofoam and rubber matting. Functionally these are all much of a muchness, but I go with that orange Gerber because I often work in low light and the visibility of the handle is a must. That Sheffield wouldn't quite hold up to my tasks, sadly.
The Gerber EAB is only 2.2oz and 2.4” closed. It’s been my edc utility blade for a few years now. It nearly disappears in the pocket and I use it dozens of times each day. At under $10 I’ve given several away as gifts as well. I think it blows all other utility knives out of the water when it comes to EDC. Just my opinion. Check it out.
The Kobalts had issues with the bolt that goes through the lock wallering out over time. Now they use a rivet, so hopefully it lasts longer, but if not its lifetime warranty. Ive had 2 or 3 waller out.
Utility knives will never be the same. I found a UT video with a titanium made utility blade box and cutter... WTF. Where are my 1 USD box cutter that did everything right? Okay, maybe a 3-4USD metal made, Stanley/Starret would last forever. But.... Ti, G10, tactical box cutters for 20-100USD? Great video Nutn (btw, @13:59 all you said is true)!
I use a mini utility knife that uses the smaller blades. I'm not cutting through carpet and other medium duty tasks. My every day jobs are cutting duct tape, packing tape, cardboard boxes, etc. I keep it on a lanyard hanging out of my pocket for quick access. All of these reviewed utility knives are too large and heavy for my meager requirements. Obviously, mileage varies.
The shefield is my favorite as well. But the Gordon at harbor freight can't be beat for $4 with common coupons. I have several of them to leave around the house but not EDC.
Well it is good to know I'm a knife nerd nearly on par with you Nutn. I've been carrying a folder utility knife for 20+ years as an addition to my usual knives. Just too much crap to deal with to use my better blades for such abuse. I also don't feel bad about heating a utility blade to hot cut certain things, something I'd never do with a real knife. BTW, on your recommendation, I bought a little "Duck" two weeks ago because I liked the locking sheath and sometimes my Buck neck knives slip the sheath. The "Duck" seems a bit too bulky compared to my other neck knives so I left the clip on and made it one of my boot knives (Yes, I wear Cowboy boots, or muck boots, when I'm not wearing ski boots). I like the little Gerber and Sheffield folders because they are just cleaner and lighter than what I'm carrying(Huskys like the larger Sheffield and Ace Hardware branded). Thanks for your efforts Sir and happy holidays to all your clan.

Doesn't carry the EAB because it requires a screwdriver, carries a multitool.
lol seriously xD talks about EDC all the time and having your tools on you.
Is it really that hard to find a coin or anything thin enough?

Outdoor Edge Slidewinder Utility Knife, Box Cutter, Screwdriver, Bottle Opener, Multi Tool (Orange) www.amazon.com/dp/B078ZLDG89/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_i2ueCb16D3V49
Both of these cutters fit nicely in my jeans' watch pocket.
"Rocket Assisted Party Favors" LMFAO!
I know, I almost spit my coffee across the room
Beat me to it. Lmao
Dude..
My SAK's are my " utility" blades! Cheap, functional, durable, dependable and easy to sharpen.
If you haven't tried the Gerber EAB Lite Pocket Knife you've never had a good utility knife! That's how much I like it! Check it out.
fudj12 agreed! Super lightweight and low profile!
fudj12 110% agree!
Wish there was an AXIS lock utility knife....
There is, the Sheffield
A10's fly out of my home city! Used to watch em run drills while driving to work! Always my favorite war plane, just the idea behind them is awesome!
Man I've been carrying a Sheffield utility knife for over 10 years now and love it... I have scars on both hands to prove it... 😂😂😂😂
As an electrician I use the millwaukee utilitity folding knives every day they got some good stuff in the utility knife game
I'm glad Sheffield change the way their blades are held in the knife I have a couple of the older ones where you flip up that top piece and slide it open to change there older models but Sheffield makes a good knife they're 15 + years old and I haven't had any problems with them
I can’t believe you missed this one:
Check out the Milwaukee Fastback.
My old man used to work on the Hogs at England AFB. Awesome that they have a model for them...might get him one.
Really digging your videos and energy. Thanks for turning me onto momentum watches
Nice review! If you like thin and light plus tip up carry, try the Gerber EAB or EAB lite
You wont be disappointed its 8 to 12 bucks and so worth it
Not sure if they make spanner bits in that size (for the pivots), but a fine tipped needle nose plier usually works.
That Kobalt gen utility knife is legit I've had it years and its solid.
Nutn I’ve been buying these kind of knives for years. They just work. I throw them in drawers, tool boxes, glove box in vehicles.
Just got that same grip at the 5.11 tactical here in Oregon. Love it and bought it based on your review.
I've been carrying the little Gerber utility knife for some time now I think it's called the ERB or EBT or something like that. I love it. Saves me wear and tear on my more expensive blades. It's only $10 at Walmart.
Edit: It's called the EAB.
I have the same one, love it
I have one, awesome suggestion!
There good unless your doing drywall work then blade change is a pain
I rock a Rexford Rutt, probably pricey for most but I love it. Thanks for the new content as always Nutn!
I'VE BEEN CARRYING THE GERBER FOLDING BOX-CUTTER FOR A YEAR NOW AS EDC.
I use a Stanley 0-10-073 and absolutely love it. It's their wooden handle folding knife
Agreed and over 10yrs I ride with my husky in leather hip pouch
Waiting on my makers knife to get here from kick starter. Time will tell if it holds up but as far as a skinny utility knife I am pretty excited for it to get here and fully intend to edc it in addition to my normal edc knife
If you like the kobalt knives from Lowe's, try model 56887. It's a button lock with an aluminum handle that's slicker than the rubber one. I use that one daily.
That 1282 could easily go on a keychain!
Nutn, I appreciate the video. Thanks for putting out gear reviews for guys like myself.
I carry a utility knife and a leatherman wingman for work. It makes a great combo.
I would prefer if it could carry more blades like the kobalt does
Nutn, instead of the washers, try doubling up on the zip tie. It works. Thanks for the knife vids!!
Forgot to mention, it's a liner lock folding utility knife but it's also a retractable blade. The one I have is model DWHT10035L
I have a generic button lock utility I use for work to save my griptillian 550-1 from chips doing sketchy cuts
I have had to tighten the pivot point before and used 2 pair of snap ring pliers. I EDC a Gerber EAB in that little 5th pants pocket.
Need to check out Milwaukee
Fastback for the win!
That washer mod is unique. When I get a bunch of extra money I’m gonna join your patreon.
Nutn: "I don't like rubber covered anything." Lol
Have a look at the lenox gold folding utility knife. I've been carrying them for years.
I am glued to the screen. Tell it Nutten
I was in Lowes the other day and I saw that they had some Stanley Faxmax and Craftsman push-button auto boxcutters, that deploy just like a knife.
I watched the video on 2x speed. LOL. It sounded like you wopped up on cocaine. I recommend it for a good laugh.
Every time you do a knife review it costs me money!!!! 😂😂
i bought a bunch of these not cause I need them but to support the channel
Nutn, I think you can use a spanner bit for the sheffield pivots, and any other pivot like it!
