      @kinguin7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yeah, I suppose it's worth noting that blade replacement requires a tool, but....
Really, that's a minor downside at most, and probably worth it for the non-rattley blade.

Ok so I’ve used the gerber for years and after two years I found out if you push down on the pocket clip right on the hump where is has the GE in gerber and then push up as you push down with your thumb the clip will come out and you can use that as the screw driver for the blade and then it just pops back into place once you are done. I’ve been doing this every time I change blades for around 3 years now and the clip still goes back into place and doesn’t come out on accident.

The large fastback is amazing, I’m a plumber and use it probably 10-15 times a day, I liked it so much I actually bought 6 more just Incase they discontinue them. For tradesmen, the fastback is invaluable.

I almost never flip the blade with my Gerber. Idk why but I feel like part of the already used half will now be sticking out into the usueable area. But I'm picky and weird and razor blades are cheap. Also, in a pinch, although your ideas if using the new blade as a screw driver, a dime fits PERFECTLY.

I was in a supply house a couple months ago and I was playing around with a Klein assisted opening utility knife, and needless to say it came with me. I carry it everyday at work, and it is absolutely my favorite tool. I love it so much, I ordered another one on Amazon to put in my personal tool bag at home.

I found that smaller Milwaukee fast back at my local home depot for $15cad 2 years ago and picked it up immediately. I'd had the normal fastback knife twice before and loved it. I use it every night at work and it never let's me down. Works barehanded or with any size of glove. Small enough to not be intrusive but bit enough to be able to handle and use firmly. Love it.
Also, if you EDC a swiss army knife, even if it's just a little classic sd on your keys, you have a screwdriver to change blades on that gerber. Just a thought.
Keep up the vids man. They're awesome

As soon as the Prybrid became available, I jumped on two of them. This is one utility knife that can fill multiple rolls and never feel bad about doing it. Solid frame indeed. Pick one up. I carry my Prybrid now more than anything. My only gripe, they could have put a pocket clip on the back. I use to lanyard hole as its supposed to be. Para chord with a clip attached. Attach it to belt loop, set in pocket or, just let it hangout.

You think the “plastic” is going to wear out?
When’s the last time you wore out anything made of Zytel?
The button spring, the black slider, the main spring, the blade, both drivers, all the screws holding the thing together, and the pocket clip are going to wear out before that “plastic” does

The Outdoor Edge Razorlite is at the bottom end of a whole genre of knives - folding scalpels with various lengths and types of interchangeable blades. Havalon do the best and biggest range -- even a folding scalpel-holder incorporated into their own Leatherman-style multitool.

Great Video! Utility knives have put a big dent in my Spyderco EDC. If the day calls for breaking down boxes or cutting carpet the high end knives stay at home. Every time I knock the tip off a utility blade I cringe to think "glad that was not my ___________" fill in the blank $100+ blade. The other benefit is less time spent sharpening and my pocket knives are generally razor sharp when needed. Thanks for the video. (most carried utility knives Fastback in the larger version and Gerber EAB lite) : )

When I switched job, instead of the Milwaukee Switchback Gen 2 that I used to carry, I chose the Gerber Superknife. It's smaller, have better ergonomic, a deep pocket carry clip and use thicker utility blades. However, for normal days, I carry a Screewpop. Around the house, I will grab my Switchback or one of my Stanley Quickslide. Nothing fancy as it doesn't need to.
For blades, I use mostly Lenox Gold Titanium-Edge Utility Knife Blades but I recently tend to use more the Stanley Extra Heavy Duty Utility Blades. The later are 1mm thick as opposed to 0.6mm for normal blades.
    Keep up your excellent work!

Made my screwpop perfect... Put it in the oven until the oven reached 300 degrees and pulled it out. This reduced the magnet strength to the perfect amount where it wouldn't lift my flashlight (Fenix e15) like it did before but still holds the blade in place.

Just bought the Gerber EAB with the plan to replace the blade retention screw to one that is a hair longer to make it easier to replace the blade on the fly, and also double as a thumb stud. See how that works out. thanks for the great work and greetings from Sweden.

    • @rodgermcadoo5631
      @rodgermcadoo5631 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I was gonna do that, but I figured that would be "too close" and I wouldn't be able to bend my old thumb in that far. I opted to drill and tap a hole for a 6-32 cap screw and loc-tited it in. Works well. In the process, though I discovered the blade retention screw is a 3mm, 0.5 pitch FYI. Hardware store here didn't have that in a cap screw.

My Milwaukee Fastback 48-22-1502 in a nutshell is absolutely perfect for me, especially for the $10 price tag. I have the entire Fastback line and this is my favorite! Blade extraction is butter smooth, tape measure guide, 2 different wire/rope cutting locations so the blade doesn't dull in the same location, bottle opener, magnetic xtra 5 blade storage compartment, lanyard hole, metal outer shell. This Fastback utility knife is extremely rugged, ergonomic and its safety features never interfere with it's operations. It's now part of my EDC.
    Job well done Milwaukee!

You're absolutely right about the slidewinder, if they made it a $20-$30 tool it could be so much better. My main issue is it takes no pressure at all on the button to retract the blade. I've since taken it apart, bent the leaf spring a tiny bit more and deepened the channel that the button falls into to keep the blade open, and that did make it much better.

Enjoining your channel. I was carrying the Gerber EAB for years. And yes, used it as a money clip. I needed to change it up. I bought the Yeeyou. It felt sold. But also heavy. The discomfort in the hand with the glassbreaker was deal breaker for me. They should have made a flathead screw driver instead. I also have the Slidewinder. It’s my EDC. I like that it’s light weight and the tools. It does function as a money clip as well. I agree about changing to all metal. But would make it heavier.

I think the fastbacks defeat the purpose of of a utility edc knife. The point is to have a small discret non intimitading knife used for box cutting and very light duty tasks. If you know you'll be cutting carpet then bring a real utility knife. On the fastback you carry a very small blade in an unnecessary large handle (even worse than the PM2 in b:h ratio).

    • @ifell3

Gerber for me, only due to its cheap so your more likely to carry it and it's heavy enough to feel that it's still in your pocket, but then it's also cheap enough not to ruin your day if it's falls out.

    Yes, do flashlights.
    Do wallets (the EDC/slim/odd types)
Do a day/trip/life overview of how your use your EDC.
I mean there are people who carry EDC just as a hobby and there are some who carry for actually using/what they need everyday. I want to see how you use whatever you like to carry everyday not like how you would use it if it happens. Just like you most of the time I am working in front a PC except when I am out for meetings, client visits and my bike rides. My EDC for normal day vs EDC for weekends is a bit different especially if its a outdoor weekend which happens once in 4 - 6 weeks.

I have this exact OLFA knife, bought it for leathercrafting. Must say that the thicker blade doesn't slice leather all that well. Would recommend something with a thinner blade for better cutting.

I EDC as well the Gerber EAB. The liner lock can go a Little flimsy over time but in my case I have used the knife as well as an throwing knife. That gives some slack on the liner lock. Otherwise the Gerber EAB is definatelly the way to go. It's the compactest as well with about the most exposed blade edge of all of those. But the main Thing is the screw contributes to the most sturdy blade Fixation since even when using the blade as a flat head screwdriver (and belive me, there is a Point were you will use that as an flat head screwdriver) the blade will not come loose and is sturdy enough not to break eighter. As well the Gerber EAB is the safest. Nothing will come looser in your pocket and the liner lock makes sure the blade does not snap Close on your Hand while using.

I know one shouldn't carry anything else in a pocket with a weapon, but, i like my clipped knife's point facing down. That prevents me from stabbing myself with a weak springed old knife. It also puts the thumb flicker right on my thumb when i pinch the top of knife out. Ready to open.

I'd add the black and white plastic Scheffield folder. I got mine for $7 with a multitool. Granted, that multitool is the absolute worst you can possibly get your hands on but it's worked well for me in a pinch. The utility blade is great.

When was the RUK introduced to the market? I’ve seen SNECX MONO which looks similar in design with a lock bar to hold the blade while you slide it around.
I’m not sure who came up with that design.

Slight correction. The gerber EAB is tool less. The trick is to use the new blade as the screwdriver. The screw extends above the surface enough to allow the back of the new blade to engage the screw. i have not use a coin/screwdriver in years.

I have the original TPT slide, got it on kickstarter when they first came out, however because they are so short and thin I don't use it that much, I use the workpro as I got better grip on it, but the blade do sometime pop out when I use it more repressively, which brings me to designing my own one, hence I'm looking these utility knife reviews for an inspiration. Once I develop it and be happy with it, I will send you one for honest thought on it. 😃

I've been carrying the outdoor edge sidewinder for several years. It fits great in a pocket slip. My only problem is that with my huge hulk hands my thumb always finds the retract button when cutting. I do wish the pocket clip was on the other end though. I also carry the gerber prybrid it takes #8 or 10 xacto blades. It is a pretty good little prybar with a blade.

The sidewinder is a cool little knife but I have yet to find a replacement blade other than the “outdoor edge” blade that came with it, that allows it to function the way that it is supposed to.

I got the YeeYou, I really like it. It replaced a multi tool, and I wanted to add a utility knife. I'm not really bothered that you can't get a gorilla grip on the thing, because I kind of accepted that it's a multi tool, and with most multi tools, you can't really get a good grip/leverage/etc. on any of the attachments, whether it be because your hand is hitting the next tool over, or the tool tucks into another part so it's not super big, things like that. I've just grown really used to having a screwdriver, or a bottle opener, or whatever in a pinch. I wanted it on my keychain, takes up less space than my key fab and the multi tool it replaced. It works fine for box cutting, which is all I really wanted it for. I have a Husky utility knife that's very similar to that smaller Milwaukee that I don't EDC for everything else, and I do EDC a folder in case I'm out and need more beef. Oh, it's surprisingly very solid feeling, especially considering the price. So, add to that I really can't really justify more than say 20 bucks for a utility knife, it was perfect for me. Purely situational though, I totally get why you wouldn't like it.
