Nutnfancy rants are so fun to watch. I was smiling the entire time watching the video. I think I see why Nutnfancy may like the tanto better than the clip point. It looks like the clip point was clipped off too much and there is not enough belly on the blade. I have considered this knife before and I will definitely give it a second look and add it to my collection. It's a great gift knife especially at the $21 price point. Andrew Demko designed Cold Steels are some of my favorites!

Taiwanese here, don't know why people hate Taiwanese made so much, I really don't think we made terrible knives : (
Sure, probably not some $400 Bark River quality of knives but definitely not bad either, I mean...have you tried the Spyderco Slysz Bowie or the Cold Steel SRK in CPM-3V? Pretty decent quality control and heat treatment if you ask me : \

I don't have a problem with a good Taiwanese knife. I can get it for a good price and a lower price. I have looked at US production blades but the price always turns me off cause of the high price and limited budget. It's not where the knife is made but how. Simple as that

I sold cutlery for years, dozens of brands from many different countries. Taiwanese knives - on average - were right up there in quality. When a customer would ask for a good value I'd steer 'em toward CRKT or similar. If they worried about the country of origin I'd simply show them one and the worries usually evaporated immediately.

When people make statements like this guy did in his review or any negative statements about knives in general such as being overpriced, or junk, or "not worth the money" my follow up question is almost always what knives do you buy and use? Its not supposing most of the time they dont respond because you can rip apart any knife at any price since every knife has both pros and cons...Cheap or expensive there is always a reason why someone would not buy it and some else would...Personal needs and wants in knives are one thing but those statements should end with "thats just my opinion" to remind readers its not going to be the same for everyone...

Exactly for the exemple the benchmade griptilian it's a excellent knife., blade steel etc but I'll probably never buy one because here it's a 110€ knife and for me a 110 € knife with the handle material they use is a no go But I will never say it's a junk

The guy paid $7 bucks to return it! What a huge dunce, how completely pointless. For just 20 or 30 bucks, it's not even worth shipping it back, especially if you have to pay for it. He could have just given it away to someone he knew needed a knife but didn't expect or appreciate a premium blade. Sad that people like this are so vocal in their ignorance, it really gives people a bad perception of what they need to expect in a knife or piece of gear. Some people won't even buy if it's not confirmed US produced.

Exactly what I said. Some people are just born to complain. I bought a CS pro lite tanto on Ebay for 22$ and I think it's great at that price, but if I didn't I still wouldn't complain because for $22 I didn't expect it to be the quality of a knife like the Recon 1 Tanto lol

Actually people with lower price range items troll others more than people with higher price range items. I think it's because people with higher price range items tend to be happy with what they have more often than people with lower price range items that get envious.
Not a dam thing wrong with this $20 knive. I'm in the upper 5%-8% Socio-economically my budget can buy me whatever gun, knife, or piece of gear I want regardless of cost but if it couldn't and all I could afford was this $20 knife I would rock it with pride.

There’s a problem and I think the problem is with China Knock offs being sold by third party vendors.
Many Amazing Customers has had this problem (Self included) with Triad Locks and they asked for a solution.
The answer was “Buyer Beware!” If the price is lower than Cold Steel’s Retail Price its probably a knock off! That is a comment from Amazon.
If you go to Ali Babba & 40 thieves you can find Cold Steel AD15’s for $10. So nutfancy you need to listen more. Instead pooh-poohing a critic. Ask them to send a video? Get some real knowledge of what is going on!
If you want I will send you videos!
I bought 4 high-end Cold Steel Folders: Code 4, Lawman, Spartan, Pro-Hunter. Great Sharp blades and Construction. But all had a Triad lock release and the Code 4 didn’t engage properly either! You needed two hand to depress. I heard that keeping the knives open for a few days, might loosen the spring and fix this nightmare.
I been buying Cold Steel since 1980. I Loved my Tanto knives. They look as great today as the did 40 years ago. But these new online stuff is crap. I even had problems with their plastic sheaths. Removing fixed blades jams. So if you get yours from CS? That makes no difference I bought fixed blades from CS. Go figure? I asked CS did they know Al Babba was selling Knock offs? No reply!

So several years ago I went to Cold Steel's parking lot sale and picked up a couple Voyager folding knives ( a medium and large clip points), they were phenominal. I gave the medium to the step-son and I kept the large. Still have it, and it's still awesome. About two years ago, I ordered another medium Voyager (not realizing that Cold Steel changed what was already great, fixed what wasn't broken). I wasn't too impressed with the new style, but I DID find the triade lock was much stiffer than the original. I disassembled the knife and took it to the grinder (NOT RECOMMENDED AS THIS WILL VOID THE WARRANTEE!!!) and then polished up my work to a mirror finish. Now that new Voyager opens like the old was does. I thought maybe this was an abberation, so I bought a Code 4. Now THAT is a truly amazing knife!!! But, it had the same issue as the new Voyager, incredibly stiff to release the triade lock. So much so that it DID hurt to do so. So, back to the grinder. After that, I stone washed the blade, internal parts and belt clip, polished up the grinder work, and now have another amazing Cold Steel knife that closes like my original Voyager. Not sure if Cold Steel is doing this as a safety thing, but that is the one, singular thing I would corroborate in the first review. Just my 2 cents...
P.S. I also seem to remember Nut'n breaking a Cold Steel fixed blade trying to use it as a sledge hammer on a rock, I also seem to remember that he had some degree of criticism for Cold Steel that the knife broke . . . while being used as a sledge hammer . . . on a rock. Seemed an unreasonable review to me, but it's not my channel.... ; )

I'm 41 years old and I just purchased this knife about a month ago to have a knife around the house to open all the packages that my wife orders. As well as open my young kids new toys. Knife came SHAVING sharp. The knife is an absolute joy to use. I love the tanto version. and the ergos of the knife. I have the money to buy a better knife... but why piss the money away if this knife will 100% do the job. Very happy. Fyi... i can snap the knife open with ease without using any centrifugal force. Just the thumb stud.

Nah disagree, the Tri-ad lock can be a super quick draw and super slow. And, can be easy or super hard to depress. It is the luck of the draw because they are cheap blades. With that said, this is Demko’s best. Great point, beautiful belly sweep on the belly of the blade. As if you have XL hands the handle is perfect.

A tip, keep the blade half open for a few days, the pressure on the lock will ease off & make it easier for you to open.

Just got the ProLite clip point in Blue, been using it for a few days, good worker knife. The edge wasn't really sharp out of the box but a few passes on the Lansky rods and it was good to go. For the rough or sharp plastic edges, I took an old nail file board and softened all the edges. After a few days of opening and closing and using it, the action is good, yes its a little tough to close and not a free dropper but its a Triad lock knife for $21 for that prices this is a great knife. I plan on getting a few more to give away to some family knife nuts.

After a few weeks with this knife, i agree that its a little more inconvenient to open to close as it wont snap open or close without a little more attention. But for $25, it is a sturdy knife, but with a different “POU” for me. I use my spyderco delica or my favorite for now, benchmade bugout for around the house daily tasks. I carry a spyderco manix lightweight for my daily edc for now.. The bug out flicks open quick and its easy to close with the axis lock when i can only use one hand due to the tasks im doing. The bugout is sooooo lightweight too and you wont notice it in your pocket.

I bought this knife for 14.00. I really didn't like it and put it aside for quite awhile. I was doing work around my house and grabbed it to use as a beater and fell in love with it. The construction is solid and light great blade and lock back provides solid lock and peace of mine. Great back packing back up blade.

Bought one of these used on eBay for $14 & change. It need sharpening and a cleaning but was near brand new. Its one of the best knife values I got this year. Truth be told, due to arthritis & carpal tunnel I do find the triad lock a bit more difficult to close but thats just me. Another great knife value IMO is the Ka-Bar Dozier Hunter. I work at a gun shop and the manager had me pick out some knives to order and we got 1 at work and the lock is hard to disengage I think it is hard to open, I can't remember, but it's good for the guy that just wants a cheap knife. One of the guys that I used to work with used to buy nice knives like Benchmade, Spyderco, ect.... and he said that he'd lose them all the time so he stopped buying nice knives and he would buy the really cheap knives and leave them all over. He'd leave one in his range bag, in his vehicle, in his tool box, in a drawer, in or on his night stand. So these are perfect for someone like that. The only problem was that he'd always ask me for my knife and I hate lending anything out because everyone that I used to let borrow things would either break or lose it or lend my stuff out to other people and they would break it or lose it. But this guy always made sure that I would get my knife or multi tool back. I think that I actually tried to give him a Kershaw and he wouldn't take it because he didn't want to lose it.

I have had a cold steel prolite (standard blade version, not the tanto) and have used it every day for almost 3 years and never has it failed on me. I've used it to pry, to whittle, to open packages, to cut through plastic and cardboard, tape, steak, fish, chicken, paper and I've only sharpened it a few times and it's been all good. Whatever will snap the plastic handles you should not have used that knife for to begin with. I sharpen it myself with a pull through sharpening system (cannot afford stones, sorry) and I've only had to sharpen it a few times. Absolutely the greatest value I have ever seen. I have had many pocket knives before this one and they all broke on me and I have not had a single problem with this knife. Would recommend to others and I would even buy five more if I could. Unfortunately I spent about 60$ Canadian but it was at a local store I supported so it was way worth it.

  • @strider_sphinx
    @strider_sphinx 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nutn, good video. Three counterpoints:
    1. You’d struggle to name a knife brand I haven’t owned/used/handled, by the prolite drop point I had would NOT flick without EXTREME wrist flick. I actually ground an Emerson opener into it because it was otherwise too slow. That didn’t work well either and I sold it. Bought it for a work knife due to value, but sold it. I’d rather destroy a PM2 twice over (if that’s even possible) than EDC that prolite to save a buck.
    2. The triad lock was a pain to close compared to any other lock back and it will give you purple thumb if you fiddle with it a bunch like I do with all my new knives. My Recon (CTS-XHP) was better as far as triad, and that’s the only two triads I’ve used. One-handed use is exhausting on the prolite.
    3. Made is Taiwan is very different than made in China, if you care about form of government and treatment of citizens. Formosa, formed into Taiwan by the defeated nationalist party led by Chiang Kai-Shek, is not and I pray will never be the same as China.
Good value knife, but hard to open and close.

Tho the lock has since become much easier to open the lock. On the deploy side of things I have never had a problem opening the knife but when i open it i just thumb it open. On the other side of that i have never had the blade start to open in my pocket either which i am much more grateful for.

Hey, Nutn, I have a request for a knife review. I was wondering if you could review the MTech 8133, it's a knife that I might liken to a fixed-blade Cold Steel Colossus, in regards to the funky width that you described. Funky as it is, though, I love the design, and I've seen knives go for almost ten times the price of this one, or at least five times the price, that simply could not get as sharp of an edge. That said, I'm a little reserved about testing the limits of this knife, mainly because I managed to break one knife and almost break another on my last camping trip, which has my superstitious side a little nervous about taking the same risk with a knife I've come to love so much.
There are some things that I'm sure you'll dislike about it, like the useless serrations on the back, but at least they aren't as obtrusive as they are on other tacticool blades, so they can for the most part be ignored. I think even gimmicky companies like Mtech can churn out a gem once in a while, and I think this knife is one of them. If you're up for the challenge of putting my belief to the test, I'd love to see the result, whether it proves me right or proves me wrong.

I have not tried this knife but my favorite pocket every day beater knife is the Kershaw. O So sweet. Around 20 bucks. Perfect size and deploys fast. Use it and right back clipped in the pocket one handed!

I paid $20 for a stone wash finish Kershaw and it is probably the most solid feeling knife I own next to a tanto Gerber i was issued for a deployment. Price is big, but in some cases it isn't everything.

Ok I have a voyager in large, it has that spine lock (triad). And for me it takes a decent amount of pressure to disengage the lock. But it's a spine lock! It better be sturdy for real thumping. Don't want it accidentally closing like some liner locks do.

I ordered a ProLite Sport off of Blade HQ cause i was digging the blade shape. While it isn't crazy fast at opening or deploying it works just fine for a work knife. It's not like the line or packages are running away on me lol. And for the price you can't beat it.

I'm not going to lie, I am 100% spoiled on auto deploying knives at this point. That said I was hoping to see a knife review on the Schrade SC90 Automatic Knife. I keep seeing it go on sale for over half price (putting it around the 20 to 25 dollar price range before shipping) and it seems right up my alley as far as dollar to quality is concerned. If anyone here has any personal experience I'd like to hear from you before I commit to a purchase!

I just got a Cold Steel Pro Lite in clip point for use as a working knife. It cuts cardboard as well as my S35VN Spyderco blade and I can thump on it without worry of damage to me or the Pro Lite (Tri-Ad Lock). Yes the Tri-Ad Lock is a little stiff but that's a function of its strength and I expected that. The 4116 seems fine to me, just touch it up occasionally on a ceramic rod and go on. Good value knife. Couldn't agree more with Nutn.

I love opinels, sure there are stronger knives but few that take such a great edge especially for the money. And it comes down to what you're going to use it for anyway doesn't it? Most 'edc' knives are used for opening peoples mail more than anything anyway. you want to review a really good folder that you could skin a Deer with? Check out the Eka Swede 10.

I do not understand why people hate on FRN handles so much. It's a lightweight, durable material that helps keep the price of a knife down. If you have issues with casting/molding marks or seams, a pack of sanding films will cost you 5-10 bucks and last you a long time (if you have a set dedicated just for working on knives). I prefer hobby sanding films from Testors because of the durable backing material and you can literally wash the films when they get loaded up from use.
The only real downside of FRN that comes to mind is that UV will eventually cause colors to fade, but that's not an issue exclusive to FRN.

Seems like a perfectly decent knife to me for the $30 I paid on Amazon. My issue is the knife isn't closable. It will close nicely about 1 out of 10 times. Generally speaking I have to screw with it for 10 minutes (literally) to get it to close. I'd be fine with a stiff spring, but that's not the issue. It's going back.

I don't yet have a knife with a Tri-ad lock. Am tempted to try the clip point version of this. I don't like tanto in a pocket knife. I wonder how tough the 4116 steel is. I have a D2 blade in one pocket, but I feel guilty in using it to pry, or pick at metal stuff. . I'd like to have the other pocket to have a tough, beater-ish pocket knife. I dunno if 4416 fits that purpose. I used to carry a Buck 110 for that purpose, but it wasn't one-hand opening. It had no pocket clip. And the thing was HEAVY. It never failed, tho, until I lost it.

I have this same knife. It's a great value. The Krupp 4116 is a tad soft, I've cut lots of boxes up with it and it dulls faster than my 14c28n knives at a similar price point, but for the $, it's worth it.

I've carried Cold Steel knives for about a decade now and they hold together and hold an edge just fine. I'm finally retiring my Spartan knife for the Broken Skull II. Daily carry and daily use for 8 years at least and it just needed a little sharpening and it's just fine. It's been used as a crowbar, used as a hammer, thrown around, dropped, stepped on, and it's just fine. The only reason I'm retiring the Spartan is because the Broken Skull is easier for me to sharpen. But I still like the Spartan more overall.
