Long live the King of distance, Long live Kenenisa Bekele. Long live the tiger of our era. It might take decades for your world records in 10000 and 5000 m to be broken, if they ever will. I don't suppose they will in our generation though. Godbless Ethiopia, Godbless Bekele
Additional to being in a small region where most prolific lost distance runners are from, he is also muscular, with muscular legs. Add to this that he has the most smooth energy efficient stride, you have a lethal combo. He uses his forward stroke momentum to flex his knees forward and plant his foot way ahead without having to flex any muscle.
On October 7, 2020 Joshua Cheptegei (UGA) broke the world's 10.000 meters record in 26:11 which he deserves credit and respect in the achievement of such a feat. But in my heart and my mind, Kenenisa Bekele is the one with the real record at this distance. He "broke it" twice, (26:20.31 in Ostrava in 2004 and 26:14.53 in 2005 in Brussels) He ran both of these races in a "real race " type of situation, not staged events, there were different type of shoes (not like they are now) different mondo track (not like the updated ones now) no pacers or rabbits, and no PACING ELECTRONIC LIGHTS AROUND THE TRACK. He did all by himself.
For the longest time, I thought it was literally just him running by himself, everyone else from the start of the race having give up, possibly to give him a boost at the beginning. That was absolutely incredible. This so should be in HD, and the amount of views it DOESN'T have is criminal. Bekele is one of the greatest athletes of all time. This is sadly not recognised by most (the average person would go "who?" Pfft...)
@@huangomez110 I'm 18 and ran 35:24 for a road 10k last June and I'm not even that fast for my age. It was a small local race and the guy ahead of me who did 35:12 was 15. Sub 40 is really good for a veteran male club runner and for any female I would say.
Scarily fast, unbelievable. That he was so far ahead makes it all the more impressive. He didn't have the benefit of that adrenaline rush you get when fighting for the lead: this was pure will, pure speed, pure godly athleticism. And SDMendoza619, I totally agree. I was just on an online forum where they were arguing over (American) football vs. soccer. I argued that they were both great... and that there are also some 10K races that are more exciting than some football/soccer games!
El Guerrouj was a miler. Kenenisa made a tactical error in the Athens 5K. Not saying the results would have been different, but you need to remember they specialize in two different events. There is a reason Kenenisa has the WR in the 5/10K while El G owns the mile.

Going sub 12:30 and 26:00 is possible, but unlikely to be accomplished... I think breaking 7:58.61 is within Bekele's abilities while his fast finish is intact (something Komen never had). But even though he does chase records, as seen in this fantastic display, Bekele is more a championship-type athlete than a time-trialer prone on setting fast times.
No disrespect to the other legends of the10000 metres eg cheptegei and many more....Bekele broke world records without an aid of fluorescent lights and also, there was always something special and majestic about this man.....well thats just my opinion anyway....
Thank you!!! Kenenisa is the real world record holder Cheptegei record attempts should be illegal.. massive cheating. The computer wavelight pacing system should be banned. What's way more impressive is the REAL world record by Kenenisa Bekele in 2004 for the 5000m 12:37 and this 26:17 He ran it by heart

im going to make an encouraging comment everyone. you are all special peeps and Jesus loves you all so much. its wonderful to thank him every day and to enjoy every day because it is a gift. great video you posted guy and the runners did fantastic jobs running. God bless you all.
Yes. I think the straight from the bend (where it becomes totally straight) is 85m. I run and that looks about right to me. The 100m to go would be up the bend a bit. The fact that he is already moving fast and that he is after a record make it easier for him to do here. I remember him more for his whole final lap efforts. Truly a freak.
Not quite sure what you mean. Some speed sessions were just your basic sprint sessions like 10 x 60m or 10 x 100m done after a track session. 20 x 400m uphill was another session that is apparently done during the winter.
Youre really lucky to have seen that. I have the video of the 5K from Paris 2003. It would be nice to see one of Komen's sub 8 2mile runs... guess well have to settle for the 3K WR that someone posted.
Renato Canova posted on Letsrun that Bekele did the following workouts in preparation for this World Record 4 x 2000m in 5:13 with a 3:30 rest + 1 x 1000m in 2:27 and 12 x 1000m in 2:35-2:36 with a 2:30 rest
Amazing !! Did all the runners get out of his way in the first lane. Especially when you are going for a world record? There should have been no one in front of him, so Bekele doesn't have to "go around" them off the turns. It's common courtesy. Very selfish of slow runners who stay in the first lane, and force a world record runner to go around you.
@Crosscountry616 His last 100m was NOT 10.18!! There is no 100m mark on the inside lane of this track. He reaches 110m to go in 26:02.8 and the 90m mark in 26:05.6. That's 2.8secs for 20m, which is 14.0 flat 100m pace. His time with 100m to go would have been around 26:04.2, meaning his last 100m was about 13.3.
i had a meeting last week in vienna and i run 2000meters in 5:59min its mei best time because bekele is very much better but i am only 15 years old and i am one oft the fastest runners of austria
The great thing about athletics is that when we think there will never be an athlete like "A", an athlete "B" comes that is better than "A". Gebreselassie and Bekele come to mind (5K and 10K distances).
@blaze222666 we are talking about an 11 second for his last 100m of a 6.2 mile race. Not to mention it is 6.2 miles run on a track. That's being a machine.
Well if you are comparing the time like that than the same could be said about a sprinter trying to run a 10k. That is like trying to compare times of a distance swimmer and a distance swimmer. You can't and therefore it is a mute point. But mainly I thought you were bashing Bekele; so I was just making credit was given where credit is due.
Beast! He just ran my fastest 400m for 25 laps. I can't believe that. Sucks that these distance runners hardly get any respect. These athletes be pushing their bodies to the limit.
Closest I could pause it at was 26:06.7 for the 100m mark, and that was a little behind the line, so he ran it in under 10.9. That's almost olympic level for the 100.
@juninhopernambucano3 His last lap was 57.1 seconds, and he averaged around a 63 second lap (so about 2:37-2:38 per kilometer). Hardly anybody can hold 2:30 for 2 miles, let alone for six and a quarter.
He has been unlucky, down with injuries. Hasn't been able to make a comeback since returning from the injury. Maybe that's the reason why he didn't participate in the London Olympics this year. Despite all that he's the best in the long distance event and i believe it is going to take a while before someone even comes close to beating his record.
@skento2000 The drums. They help the runners maintain their rhythm, so I wouldn't call them gay exactly. Maybe annoying for the viewer but... well, if 26:17.54 is the result, I'm not complaining.
That guy at the end sped up as if he was fighting to finish with Bekele....but he would have had at least another lap to go since it was Bekele that one. I'm thinking he is a very good runner and did not want the reputation of being 'lapped' on his record. He achieved that, but i wonder what was his last lap like after that pump he put down in order for Bekele to not lap him.
his last 100m was about 10 seconds .. but you have to keep in mind that the athletes competing in the 100m are starting from 0 speed so they have to accelerate to full speed. whereas bekele is already running at the last 100m mark probably around 9.5-10m/s
Being born at altitude definately has its advantages. But if you had two guys, both born at altitude, one on epo and the other clean. Both run 120 miles in one week, the clean guy will be hurting, the guy on epo can get his dosage of epo, recover really quickly and hammer another tough 120 mile week while the clean guy will have to take a few recovery days.
I clocked his last 100m as 10.52 plus or minus a few tenths of a second. Although he didn't start from a stand still that is still amazing considering he had just run 9900m
Watching him run is a pure thing of beauty.
