    The best long jump contest ever, we will never see something like that again.
    Lewis 4 jumps over 8.80m... Powell 8.95m and a 9m foul...
    The BEST EVER LONG JUMP CONTEST.

      They did some research on the big improvement and found that the runway was way more elastic than it should have been, therefore giving a speed advantage. It wasn't prohibited back then though so it was legal. It wouldn't be today though.

    He was my long jump coach for a long time. To people who believe he is stuck up because he has a world record, no he is a great man. He cared for me. Now I will be 13 and I have never seen him do his jump. He is my inspiration, forever in my mind and his words of wisdom may rest in my head forever.

      100% agreed. One of the greatest duels in sports history. The video is truly special as well. One of the first TH-cam videos I ever saw, back in early 2007. The low resolution, the early 90s music, everything about it is perfect. It was also a special venue. Tokyo in 1991 seems magic. It was the last year of the Japanese asset price bubble (1986 -1991) It just seems like a different world. I was born in 1994, and East-Asia in the late 80s and early 90s seems so fascinating and special to me. I wish I could have been a spectator that night.

    Powell has now had this world record longer than Beamon held his. Is that incredible or what ?
    Beamon '68 to '91 , 23 years........Powell '91 to present day , 24 years and counting. Is anyone getting close ?
    I haven't been following the long jump closely for quite some time.

    • @oldfrend
      @oldfrend 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i bet an NBA player could do it if he trained hard enough. someone like vince carter in his prime, fast as hell and could jump out the gym. maybe nate robinson - fly through the air like a cannon ball. it would be close though. beamon's record exceeded the previous record by two *feet*. about 9 meters is probably the human limit. powell did it on his foul. lewis supposedly did it in the early 80s, also foul.

    Michael Powell's outstanding WR already has held for a long time, sir - 21-and a-half-years, to be precise!
    I have a great deal of respect for the British long jumper - Mr Greg Rutherford - but the fact remains that when he won the Olympic Long Jump title (in London, 2012) he did not jump anywhere near as far as Mike Powell had jumped (at the World Championships in Tokyo) many years previously.
    What a remarkable athlete Mr Powell was in his prime!

    Personally, I think that this amazing string of jumps made by Lewis was largely overshadowed by Powell's "one-in-a-lifetime" jump. At 31 years old, you gotta be a superhuman to perform several near world records in a such a short period of time and under such an extreme pressure.
    The perspective that you have to beat a world record in order to win is all means a tremendous task. Carl Lewis is the best track and field athlete of all time.
