    Unbelievable. He looks like he's sprint finishing on every lap. It's like that one guy who sprints off at the start at a ridiculous pace just to get a moment of glory, yet he maintained that ridiculous pace for the entire race!!

      Jesus, it is. I mean, 57/58 lap times with almost *no* deviance for the entire race. It's like what the fuck. Most people are justified in feeling proud of running 1 or 2 laps at that speed - but 7.5 is just godlike.

      This is like how coe broke his own 1000 m record in 1981 , running with speed and endurance,and why only one person has broken his records in the last 39 years.and the person who broke it had a pacemaker up to the last 100 m of the race. as coe did 1and half laps by himself..

    Komen had such a short racing career lasting barely three years, but he is still the only athlete to run under 8minutes for 2 miles, and he did it on two occasions.
    No other athlete, however great they may have been, have been able to string two 3-59 miles together.
    This 3000m record will be very hard to beat, as well.
    Just imagine, asking your pace setters , to set the pace to come through the mile, in around 3min54sec, that's only 11sec slower than the World Record.
    That's one magic moment in athletics.

      @@waterproof4403 Yes injuries destroyed especially Bekeles marathon career, inspite of his 2.01 he never became a dominant marathon runner, his stride wasn't optimal for such long distances. I think Komen was nr 1 of all times in wasted potential. He ran first and foremost for the money to get him and his family out of poverty, and he competed way to much. When he had earned enough money at 22 his motivation faded. His speed at 1500m (3:29) and mile (3.46) also was very impressive. @@sympaticoo1 It's always fun to speculate. El G was 25 when he ran 7.23 in his first attempt, Komen was only 20 when he ran 7.20 after several attempts, and that was 2 days after a 5000m so he must have been running on tired legs here like the commentator says. El G had 5 more years of hard training and experience of competing then Komen did, when they set their personal bests at 3000m. If Komen had stayed motivated for another 5 years he could probably run around 7.15, but he never did. Komen never avoided El G at 1500m, mile or 3000m, El G avoided Komen at 5000m were Komen had his superior best chance of winning. Just because El G wanted olympic gold at 1500m didn't mean that he couldn't run some occational 5000m, like Morceli did in -94 before his olympic gold in -96. But El G never did until -03 when Komen was long gone.The hard truth is that regardless of circumstances, number of attempts, how close, pacing, age, experience, tired legs, what distance you fucused on, that Komen never defeated El G or that El G had more championships wins, in a pure time trial Komen ran 7.20 and 12.39 and El G ran 7.23 and 12.50. The clock doesen't lie and you are never any better then the times you perform.

    The 3000m event is quite underrated. This guy went several seconds faster than any other legend ever, like Gebrselassie, Bekele, Farah, El Guerrouj, Cheptegei. None of those legends could even touch that record. Though, I think Ingebrigtsen WILL be the one to break this record, especially considering his super dominant 2 miler WR. His 3000m split in that run was 7:23

    he may be wrong for the number of people now, with Amos and Rudisha (and others?), but the 800m requires so much training in both the sprint and distance worlds. 3ks, 5ks and 10ks are all much much harder, but the 800m simply is a race that's very very difficult to go lower than even 1:43 in. Look at how many people have broken 3:33(?), a comparable time in the 15 to the 8.

    I guess the problem I have with that whole era from around 91-05 was the depth all across the board. No names running 3:30 and guys like El G that were able to run 3:27-28 week in week out looking fresh as a daisy seconds after finishing a race.

    • @runcaz7802

    Now we have the situation where they can keep samples for years (only intro in 2008) and they have more sensitive tests which can detect subtle changes in oxygen absorption. This came in around 2006, round about the time when the performances (times) in the 1500 and above distances, became slower, returning to pre 1994 levels. For many years now, UK athletes have had to declare their whereabouts every day of the year in order to be tested.

    Some big names in the late 90's appeared from nowhere and had a rapid meteoric rise, followed by an equally rapid decline at an early age. The advances in the world record for distances from 1500m upwards improved at a markedly increased exponential rate to the underlying historical progression projections. That is far more suspicious career path. In the last 4 seasons 3:30 has been broken only 3 times (with no sub 3:29s), 7:30 ten times (4 by Bekele & 2 by his bro), 12:50 once & 26:50 seven.

  • @YiftertheShifter1
    @YiftertheShifter1 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @7agneskickingbird7 Yes, it does raise many questions, but you also have to consider that those who set the standards in the '90s pretty much all retired/ moved on at around 2005 (i.e. Guerrouj retires; Geb moves to the roads, but sets more WRs there; Lagat's 1500m abilities decline; Kipketer retires). There are a lot of factors that determine performance in distance running, and EPO/ other drug use could be one of them, though we'll never know for sure.

  • @deano27671
    @deano27671 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    A small dose of EPO in season can rejuvinate the athlete further. As far as I'm aware, the IAAF carry out random (don't know how often) testing on athletes from all nations. However, the majority of testing is done by each nation's federation. Not all nations carry out "out of competition" testing, let alone "out of season" testing. The Jamaicans, for example didn't up to last year (not sure if that's changed since!?).

    Some poorer Athletic federations, like in Africa and Jamaica, do not have out of season procedures even now! There is seldom smoke without fire; in 1997 Komen tested positive for excessive levels of caffeine (then on the banned list), & was suspended. He later was reinstated after it was claimed he had a genetic defect!! Not long after his form dropped considerably. By 2001 & the EPO test he was running 7:43 for 3k & outside 13 mins for 5000m. He was only 25. Coe ran 1:43 at 33 in 89.

    The lesser the meet the less testing would be carried out. As I said, traces of EPO can be out of your system within about 3 days, but that doesn't mean the benefit from it's use has worn off. The main benefit of EPO would be in the off season, during intense periods of training. By using it then, it allows athletes to train harder, for longer and with less recovery time. It's a bit like doing a moth's altitude training, the benefits of which can last several weeks.

    Coe himself was the first athlete to address the IOC congress in 81 calling for a lifetime ban for anyone caught taking PEDs. Moreover, he commissioned a paper, in conjunction with Lord Moynihan, during his time as President of the Sports Council to ban blood doping in 1986, when he was still competing.
