I love learning. I've been playing EB since high school and DB after college. I retired early from software engineering career and went to music school got my double bass performance degree. Now I'm an orchestra musician, and freelance theater player. I loved being in music school. I need to join SBL and check out the pathways.
It took me awhile to make up my mind about SBL were serious or just out to get our money, but I realized they really do care, hope to join soon, I have questions.
It’s so good hearing from such a great player and overall dude who’s also doing musicals! I did a run of Next To Normal and definitely threw in my own flair, so I was happy to hear that even at the highest levels that bass players in theatre don’t change all that much 😂
Sandberg Basses also do the yamaha type thing, they hook it to a machine that repeats bass parts over and over again, and vibrates to simulate them being played for many years. Its a great idea.
38 : 30 or so. 😂 hit 40 years playing bass this year. Dozen or so different basses later back to the mighty P. Have a dozen P basses now but that’s another podcast.
we call them "Cabaret Musicians" they sometimes sit in at ronnie scotts & other venues a most famous place not sure if its still there,, the Bag O Nails ( no the joint on Berwick St ) fav haunt of those performing in shows Don Blackmons bass player is undisputed as the most dangerous in what he does , for a "cabaret" musician to say so,, is a lot ;D
Cabaret Musicians ?? yeah,, they can play "anything" ,, hard bop , fusion , pop ,, whatever,, anything, Then,, before closing time ,,, they play what they like best ;D ""Cabaret"" all the classics, from classic shows ,, trap door visible ,, for those who don't know the deal about Cabaret musicians They can play anything ,,, just to warm up,
My apologies.. Probably a combination of being a bit nervous and trying to think of the next thing to say.. end up filling every gap with 'y'know'.. Doh!
Ian is a totally awesome and authentic guy. Love his contributions to SBL 👍🏻

24:03 this is a great insight. Keep the bass alive!
Brilliant interview, thanks for the mentions guys! 🙂
Jan '78 here. The bass I've had the longest is a Feb '78 Rickenbacker 4001. Me and my bass were born mere days apart.

22:50 same for me…I have no trouble getting enough lows. The challenge is getting highs and upper mids to come thru 👍🏼
Love Ian’s courses on SBL! The R&B course is sooooo deep.❤
SO good!
Brilliant. I'm diving into the Funk and Soul pathways defo
Ian ... that 1968 Jazz is stunning .... ( McCartney's first Fender Bass was a 1968 Jazz and played on the White Album for the first time. )
Ian Allison

Awesome sauce. Ian Awesome sauce
🙂 great pod
Scott’s Jazz has a 3 bolt neck. I don’t think it’s a 74 as mine is 4 bolt. I believe the 3 bolt neck started later in 75.
Sandberg guitars are known for putting their masterpiece builds through a vibration process to improve sound
Great vid. Sorry I got here so late!
Allison with the Demon Slayer hoodie! 🤌
Album that grows over time - slowburner or a grower
ya'll should try and have Rick Beato on. He went to school for bass.
I can't totally relate to cold bass syndrome. That's what I call it. lol
